This past Friday, I decided to have breakfast at The Firebird Cafe as I have before. They were busy. When my pancakes arrived, I had neither butter nor syrup. To help, I decided to get my own syrup. Then I asked the cook for butter; he threw it into my hand, which triggered a reaction in a disabled veteran. I asked him if he meant to throw it, and he told me to go sit down, which I did not do. He said he would call the police, and I told him, "Call them." I asked for a refund since I had not touched the food. I was told no, and I recorded everything, including videos and pictures of the server and the man who threw the butter, who refused to refund my money. I contacted my bank about a fraudulent charge since I never touched the food. They are investigating and have access to the pictures and videos. Never again, and I recommend whoever is reading this not to spend their money, especially if you are brown. read more

This awesome spot at Five Corners Essex Junction is definitely worth the short drive from Burlington! They serve up great breakfast and lunch options, inside, outside, or to-go. They take no shortcuts here, and make their scratch sauces and condiments in-house. I had the huevos rancheros 'Christmas' style, with both green tomatillo and red chipotle sauce. YUM. They really should bottle that stuff! Hubs ordered the blackstone benedict, featuring their poblano cream sauce. Absolutely outstanding! Even the classic muffin, egg, bacon and cheese breakfast sandwich was tasty. They also serve great coffee, freshly roasted just down the block at their sister shop, Nest. We appreciated the free refills while dining in too! This is a special spot for people who enjoy good flavorful food. Don't miss it. read more

Went here for lunch on a Thursday and the place had a steady stream of customers. Even with the number of orders, our food came out pretty quickly. We ended up ordering the Orchard, pork tacos (daily special), and Demeter omelet without olives. Overall, everything was pretty tasty. The only issue was that we sat outside first and the bees also thought we had a good order, so we had to move inside. Would recommend. read more

This place nailed it!! Blueberry pancakes were superb. Hot juicy blueberries and local Vermont syrup. I, however, after 25 years in the food and beverage industry, created my own sandwich. Firebird Cafe is a reliably good cafe for brunch/ lunch or breakfast in Essex. It is one of the best brunch options in Essex. (As evidenced by the crowded parking lot and packed seating). You seat yourself, order by the cashier and the food is brought to you according to your number. I've been here a couple times with K and found the food to be better and better each time. We met a friend post holidays for brunch. This place was not that busy around 10 am but filled up around 11:30 am. I ordered a coffee and breakfast sandwich on croissant. K had a chorizo fresco (omelette with chorizo with avocado and non-spicy green chile sauce). My bacon egg and cheese croissant sandwich was perfectly executed. The croissant was toasted crispy, the bacon was perfectly crunchy and the eggs were soft and mildly runny. I loved it. The only item lacking was the chipotle sauce: it lacked spiciness or smokiness. The food is American/New Mexican and reminded me of food in Santa Fe. Specifically the Large food portions, green chile sauce, chipotle sauce and great chorizo. The green chile sauce however was not roasted or spicy at all, which was a little disappointing but maybe that's what the locals like. Also the chipotle sauce was not smoky or spicy. I would definitely return for the delicious coffee and great food. Just don't expect the sauces to be similar to that of New Mexican cuisine. read more

This place was an easy detour from our trip from Smugglers Notch back to Boston. There's a big spacious parking lot in the back of the restaurant but there is also a street parking for Firebird Cafe. The restaurant is counter service so you will go and tell the cashier at the front what you want and they will serve you your food. TIP - check in and you can get a free coffee! I ordered the chorizo fresco omelette which was flavorful but nothing out of the ordinary. The omelette came with home fries or toast, but I opted for the home fries. They also have lunch options if you don't want a brunch item. Overall, wouldn't mind coming back here but wouldn't mind also trying other food places around the area. read more

A new friend has been a regular here since it opened several years ago. She recommended we meet there for breakfast. I'm glad she did. I got there a couple minutes before it officially opened and was greeted warmly. My friend wasn't there yet (I didn't know yet she was a regular), so I explained I'd wait to order until my friend came and then took a corner table to check out the tea and coffee offerings. I love tea and was glad to see so many artisanal kind. After she arrived, we went to place our order. As they've been busy, my first two tea choices were in reorder, so I opted for a pot of Earl Grey to go with my egg, ham, and cheese sandwich. She ordered a veggie and meat egg scramble with no cheese and hash browns. We sat down to chat and the place filled up quickly for a Monday morning. They brought us our teas, then our meals, once ready. The egg sandwich was delicious. I really liked the chipotle sauce they used. Reminded me of a thick adobo. Her breakfast looked amazing! As it was only 8am, I don't eat that much at that hour, but I'd definitely return later in a day for brunch or lunch (the panini offerings look great). Feedback: Sunday brunch - I ordered a panini with ham and Brie, was super excited, was served on a paper plate, just a skinny little sandwich, no sides, and was sadly quite underwhelming. My friend got a breakfast egg dish - again, paper plates and plastic utensils. I expect paper plates at a picnic or BBQ, not at a sit down restaurant. Portions were small - We were still hungry - and ordered more food. Tables were dirty when we arrived, the staff was not available to clean them off so I did it myself so we could sit down. The restaurant industry struggle with staffing issues due to the pandemic, so I become less picky about services in general. They currently use paper plates so don't expect too much on food presentation. However, the food is consistently delicious after several dine-in experience this summer & fall. This was our first and LAST time visiting this cafe. The food was mid at best, but what sealed the deal was the HORRIFIC behavior of the woman cooking the food. She berated a young female employee for making a mistake while we patiently waited to place our order. Then she made a huge production about a lively group of customers she thought were being too loud. This included throwing her hands up in the air several times, eye rolling, and verbally huffing and puffing about how loud they were. We ordered a breakfast burrito which we asked be cut in half, but she refused treating the young male employee like dirt in the process. Cook is very creative, with innovative (and old school) breakfast/brunch options. Large outdoor seating area. 7 indoor tables (all 4-tops). Order at counter, they bring order to table. Popularity means you may wait a little for your order (my wait: 20 mins); but the quality of meal made it worth the wait. ALSO: Just around the corner from the Burlington/Essex Jct AMTRAK station! If you're leaving on the morning train, call or drop by about 45 mins before departure time and grab a to-go order to eat on board (as my friend did this AM)--far better than the junk served in the AMTRAK cafe car! So prior to COVID I tried out their new location. Floor plan is a bit erratic and for someone who had never been I had no idea how they operated. Which is you go to the counter (around the coffee station) then order and if a table opens up grab it an your food is brought to you. Now we had 2 breakfast burritos, easy to make most is PRR prep'd in my experience. So 8 cups of coffee and an 53 minutes later we got our food. No that wasn't a typo. We watched other who came in get theres and go, some bigger orders others simple like ours. It appears the cooks have no idea how to run a line properly. The food was good, not over the top or anything. Definitely not worth 53 minutes waiting for. They really should have a sign that says how they function and move the order desk to facing the door. Probably not going back, unless I have lots of time to kill. read more

I don't understand all the hype, as far as 5 stars are concerned. I mean, it's good, but not worthy of 5 stars, imho...A-OK or 3 star level. I had the carnitas omelete. The pork was so savory and succulent, but not exactly "mexican" in nature. It was more of a pulled pork inside an omelete without spices. My wife ate a chicken, bacon and avocado wrap (identified on the menu as C.B.A.), which she enjoyed. With drinks it was about $22. They have several gluten free options.
