Just had a below average meal at this place. We haven't been there since before the pandemic but used to like it. We took a family member there for his birthday and were so disappointed. I ordered Carbonara with shrimp. The shrimp were not skinned but mixed into the sauce and there was no bacon at all. When I pointed out the lack of bacon, I had to show the waitress the description on the menu. She came back with a cup of bacon and said the chef forgot to put it in. This place wasn't nearly as bad as I anticipated. Most of the poor reviews I had read prior, really reflect issues in service, which is somewhat understandable for a new business. When I visited, I had no issues with service although I'm very aware that I caught them just before the dinner rush. Hardly any other patrons were seated anywhere other than the bar. My server was quick, efficient and attentive. I ordered a Caesar Salad ($7.99) with salmon (market price) and a Diet Coke. The salad was pretty solide - large portion, crisp lettuce, not too much dressing and although the salmon was a little undercooked, it was seasoned well. What surprised me though is that my bill quickly snuck up to a little over $19. Assuming the Diet Coke was at the very most $3, that means the salmon alone cost an additional $8-9? And this is for a meal that has a comparable quality of Friday's or Bennigan's. Definitely overpriced and unexpected so watch out if you order that. I enjoyed the food! It was hearty and quite satisfying. The portions are large. I was able to take half home and eat it for lunch the next day. Based on that alone I'd say it was a great value. For a starter I had the pretzel dog bites. The pretzel bread added a nice layer of flavor to the traditional hot dog! Next, I had the silver sliders. The jalapeño buns on my sliders were a nice heat and not overpowering. The angus beef was very good and the wedges were crispy! I also partook in a Malibu Cooler . . . or two. They are on the sweeter side, which I prefer, so if you're looking for something stronger ask the wait staff - they were helpful. Things to know: 1. Parking is not directly next to the building currently, but it's a short walk. 2. Absolutely horrendous experience. I am never going back! After announcing my family was there to celebrate the 21st birthday of my little sister, the manager-on-duty immediately jumped into a rant about the legality of my sister's license, saying it would not be accepted. She is from out-of-state and was unaware (as was I) about the recent changes to the liquor law - vertical IDs are not accepted in Montgomery County. Instead of calmly explaining the new law (or acting dignified at all), the manager became extremely defensive, rude, and verbally aggressive especially when my husband inquired further about the law. He was disrespectful to the point of frustration, so me and my family left the restaurant, found another establishment to do business with, and spent approximately $200 on food and drinks. I did not have a bad experience here when I went on a Sunday night. Service was fine. The space is decent. It seems like it would be a good place to watch sporting events with a plethora of TVs surrounding the room. Nonhappy hour draft prices are good; even better at happy hour (M-F 3-7) where drafts are $3, martinis are $5 and wings are $0.50 each. The artichoke crab dip is very good and perfect for two. The pizzas however, well, just don't. Why spend $10 here, when for just a few dollars more you can get an eight piece, made to order, fire oven baked delicious pizza from Pacci's a block away. Maybe the service kinks have worked themselves out. If you just want a neighborhood place to have a beer and catch a game, then check this place out. I gave Fire Station 1 one more chance last night. I knew from experience that the service was second to one (none), so I didn't bother with a table. I wanted a decent beer, so I told the lady at the door I was just going to the bar. Some beefy looking gents, looking to be firemen, had been served, or were just sitting there (Fire Station 1 was a real fire station, turned "brewpub," the working station is across the street). There was no bartender. This had been the case before, and if the beefy firemen had not been there I probably would have walked around the bar to the tap and poured myself one. Fool me once...looks good on the outside but I guess they don't want my business. Advice for others: if they serve you your drink and then you don't see them for an hour, leave. read more

The older I get and the more I venture out to find new places to eat and to drink, I realize that appearance can often be deceiving. Take Fire Station 1. Firstly, I have never been to Silver Spring, Sure, I live just a few miles south in DC, but I guess I was just never motivated enough to come out. So while I had a couple of hours left on the zipcar rental, after dropping off a rent check to my landlord, I decided on lunch in Silver Spring. And right on the corner stood Fire Station 1. It's bright, clean looking, AND they are a brewery. Sold. Here's the thing though, I don't really even think they are a brewery for starters. The building is pretty damn cool, being a former fire station, and being redone perfectly. But seriously, don't call yourself a brewery unless you make the damn beer yourself. They have 5 beers that appear to be house made, as they are names I have never heard or seen elsewhere, but if they want to go the brewpub route, they need to step it up. If the beer is made on site, I would love to know where. There is no indication of any brewing equipment anywhere. And really, if the taste of the beer was any indication, they really do need to change something up. I am not sure where these beers come from, but I went for a flight so that I could taste them all. Now look, I can play beer snob rather well, but I can get down with a good PBR or bud light any day. Sadly, this place played neither roll. 1) The IPA had minimal, if any hops 2) The stout tasted like water Of the beers I tried, not one was memorable in a good way. I was really hoping the food would be more exciting. I went with the crab cake sandwich with their house smoke rings. Fancy names should only ever be used if you master what you are making. If you call onion rings "smoke rings" it indicates you actually tried to make them good. And in reality, you didn't. The onion rings were some of the most disgusting I have ever tried. Hugely cut, I they looked decent. But the batter was completely flavorless. And to make matters even worse, they were so soggy and drenched in grease that I struggled to get one down. And then there was the crab cake. I'm not even sure what was going on here. It was made of canned crab, which is fine, but the cake itself also had very minimal flavor and was incredibly unexciting. It was sandwiched between a huge soggy roll that I just moved aside. I would have been able to deal with this if it didn't cost $18. Like seriously? I could have had some real food for that price. Then there was the wait staff. They were incredibly rude, and generally unconcerned with us. The place was less than half full, yet every request took huge amounts of time. As we hadn't seen our waitress for a while, when another one walked by, I asked her for our bill and she rolled her eyes and responded "umm, you have to ask your server." Bad beer. Bad food. Schizophrenic menu. First of all I anticipated a terrible lunch, but was pleasantly surprised. It was o.k. I had great mexican flavored cheddar cheese stix that were coated with tortilla chips, awesome idea, but taste terrible with the marinara they come with. Why not salsa? Then I went for fancy and got the short ribs. They were tender, but covered in a cheap tasting steak sauce. The asparagus was the saving grace. Not terrible, but I will say that despite the space being new, its very confused. LEDs on the ceiling, hot long bar, but TGIFridays feel with the booths. The menu is all over the place. Came out to watch the games and to grab a bite with my son. Ordered over $70 worth of food. The server, Helena was attentive, stealthily removing my dishes as I completed the courses of my meal. My drinks had to be remade, but no big deal , new bartender. Bartenders Mike, Crystal and Artavia, are typically spot on and are more experienced. The reason for the one star. There was a question about an additional drink on my bill so the supervising manager was sent over. First she never introduced herself, however I later learned her name is Noella. Instead of hearing my concern Noella preferred to over talk me and speak very rude and loud. Mortified at the demonstration of this behavior, in front of my teenage son. I had to remind Noella during her rant that my child was seated at the table. Never resolving the issue or answering the question, I realized that the matter was moot, very much like the manager. Irrelevant. This interaction was so off and left a very negative impression on what had been a great lazy Sunday afternoon. How does one compete with ignorance. You don't. I paid the bill without resolving the matter. When you read the negative reviews about the servers, just understand that it starts with the leadership of the restaurant. read more

Pro: Plentiful outdoor seating for those rare nights when the weather is gorgeous. Cons: The food. My friend said she liked their chili, so we started with their loaded potato skins (chili, cheese, and sour cream). It's possible that my friend lacks taste buds, because the chili was sort of bland - there was nothing to give those skins a little zing, and a little more salt would have gone a long way. I followed up with the Cuban sandwich and fries. The missing salt was all on the pork on my sandwich. But actually, the flavor wasn't too bad, although the sandwich was really dry. Note to cooks: real Cubans are stopping in butter. Think on that. The fries are more like giant potato wedges, which were also decent. If I had been thinking I obviously wouldn't have gotten skins and fries, but what can you do? The super Con: the bathroom. This place lost a star because it was nasty, dirty, and run down looking. I'd wanted to try Fire Station for a while, and I stopped in for lunch and some football on a Sunday. There were a few jersey-wearing fans at the bar, 5-6 games were going, and I ordered some Old Bay wings and some Yuengling and settled down for the afternoon. My wings weren't bad, a little dry, but I liked the Old Bay flavor. I didn't really like the menu options, and I eventually settled on the Smoke Stack burger a few hours later, which wasn't bad. I figured it would be much more packed than it was on a Sunday afternoon for football, but it never got close to full. The staff was kind of spotty, and it took me a couple tries to get a glass of water when my waiter went MIA. They do have a bunch of TVs if you just want to watch sports and have a beer. NFL Sunday Ticket, and some NFL viewing specials like pitchers of beer and appetizers, though they weren't that much cheaper. Overall, nothing jumped out at me as horrible or excellent, and I think that they need to step it up a bit to be worth recommending. read more

It has been about a week since my 1st visit. I was hoping to see FSO fully ready for its business. Most items in dessert menu are still not available. I sat at a table this time instead of the bar, and I was very disappointed by the service. Server came by only 3 times. To get the order, to serve the food and to give me a check. Food came out SO LATE.. I waited for 20 min to get calamari and chicken Chesapeake and pizza. Like other yelpers said, the server disappeared after ordering the food. When the food came out, she showed up but disappeared again when I wanted to ask for water-refill and ketchup for fries. Now, it gets worse. Chicken Chesapeake was awfully disappointing. I've never seen such a small piece of chicken for $17. The plate was filled with big slices of potato fries and a few pieces of veggie. If I've known how the chicken would be like, I would not have ordered it. For pizza, it got cheese and most toppings on only 1/2 side. I had to put 2 slices (one with toppings and one without toppings) like a sandwich to eat it so that i won't have to eat a bare slice of pizza dough. Entire restaurant seems to be so out of order and hectic..I'm not sure if it was due to unexpectedly high volume or just lack of enough training/experience to become a self-sufficient restaurant. I've given it a few more weeks, and i am not happy. The original grace period of an opening is past, and FS1 needs some help and real fast. I can't believe that the original chef is still there, because things like the onion rings, the sandwiches and the sides have all become blander prepackaged Sysco.clones of their handmade originals. The crowds are still coming, at least on weekends, and they quickly overwhelm the staff. The managers seem clueless to how to ramp up the service. and the mistakes coming from the kitchen bollux the works even further. They STILL don't have their beer act together either, and for a place that had the potential to be a weekly gathering place for quaffers is getting a bad rep. You are really better off going to Quarry House (an underrated gem a few blocks north at Bonifant) if you want to try interesting beers. These guys are blowing it. All the goodwill and patience in the world won't save a place that has bad food and incompetent management. I WANT FS1 to succeed, but soon I have to stop making apologies for the place. Came for football on Sunday, like a lot of people. Got the wings, which is the most recommended thing. Got the wings and halfway thru I bit into a raw chicken wing. I asked for my order to be remade, and when they remade it, they only gave me three wings (not even the amount of wings I had left on my plate when they took it back to the kitchen). I'm not sure why this place is rated so low but a group of us choir ppl head over there after a concert for a gathering. The food was yummy - no complaints. The people there were so accomodating to us bc at first, our group was a group of 6; then word spread and it became group of 12 then even more ppl came by that they moved us to the whole floor upstairs. We even had the best waiter to serve us - nickname "Batman" who did magic tricks several times throughout the night that blew our mind!! If you go there, apparently his signature drink "the batman" is the thing to ask and so yummy that it can be dangerous. We had an amazing time there and would definite go again. =) read more

Went to fire station last week as i work in the area. Was there for lunch on a weekday was not busy at all. The inside is clean but average decor etc. the prices were a little higher than I thought they should be for the quality of the food. My chicken sandwich was a little dry, but ok. If it wasn't for the $2.50 pints on Tuesday nights (3pm-close) I'd give this restaurant 1 star. Came with a party of 7 at 7pm on a Tuesday night without a reservation. They didn't have a table available at the time, so we all headed to the bar for a drink. All pints were $2.50...score! We waited, and we waited. The restaurant is rather small (has some outside sitting but it was rather humid last night), but I noticed they had an upstairs portion. They let 2 groups of 4 head upstairs, so I thought I'd check out why we weren't being seated yet. I asked if we could be seated upstairs and the answer was no because they didn't have enough servers. Really?! You just sat 8 people up there who came in 20 minutes after us! After waiting another 25 minutes (45 minutes total), we finally sat down in a booth. I ordered the 10" Cheese Steak pizza (sautéed onions and green peppers with chopped cheese steak meat topped with mozzarella cheese) for $8.99. The pizza must have been sitting there for a little bit while the other food was being cooked because it was semi-cold when it got to me. It had lots of cheese, but where was the cheese steak?! There was barely any meat on my pizza, and had sprinkles of onions and green peppers as well. Eh, I wouldn't order this again IF I ever came back (which I highly doubt). Other people in the party ordered crab cake sandwich (100% lump crab meat seasoned with Old Bay, either baked or fried) for $11.99. The sandwich looked good, but they said it tasted okay (after adding tartar sauce, which didn't come out with the sandwich). I also tried a smoked ring (beer battered onion rings). My friend only ate one, and didn't want the rest so I thought I'd try one. After taking a bite I realized why she didn't like them. It just tasted like pure batter. I thought these were onion rings?! Our waiter was eh. I'm not sure if he was trying to be funny or not, but he was pretty annoying and tried to rush us when we ordered (yet he didn't have his pad/pen ready to take our order). The Fire Station was okay...I would give it 2.5 stars if I could...As other yelpers have mentioned, the service is friendly, the decor/history of the place is cool and the atmosphere is alright. (The music is a touch loud of the diners, fine for the bargoers). But, there is something about the whole place, before even getting to the food, that is a little off. I struggle to put my finger on it, but I think it is the uber modernity of the bar in a place that is in other ways striving to stay attached to history. The big flat screen TVs and the mood lighting shining on aluminum panels just don't strike the right note. Having said all that, the food: The food was okay but not at all great. We split the roasted roma tomatoes with parmesan topping and the queso sticks (a mexican take on mozzarella sticks). the tomatoes were tasteless, as was the parmesan/bread crumb mix. Avoid that menu item. The queso sticks were interesting; a neat concept executed fairly well. It was mexican style nacho cheese rolled in tortilla chip crumbs and then fried. For some reason, it was served with marinara sauce. Salsa would have been better, but they were fine without any dip. My girlfriend had a grilled chicken wrap with sundried tomatoes, spinach and avocado spread. She said it was quite good. I had the cuban sandwich; it was okay. The pulled pork had very little flavor and there wasn't enough mustard, or the mustard didn't have enough kick. I probably wouldn't go back here exclusively for a meal, but if drinking was going to be involved, I could certainly pay another visit. read more

This is my second time there and it's been okay! Food comes out fast and decent but I feel like they don't put much effort to make the plate look decent. They'll just throw everything into a plate and call it a day. I got the chicken quesadilla but the guacamole came really dark brown. It didn't look fresh. I asked for frozen margarita which was on the menu but the waiter said they don't have the machine to make the frozen one and it's not that good. Why keep it on the menu if there is no machine to make it? We asked for extra lemon between 5 people and he only brought 3 pieces. I just don't understand why they are so stingy on their condiments. When i went they had an ordeal with a customer walking out on a large check. I wont hold that against them because i know how exciting things like that can be. Service was still ehhh for the amount of business they had, but they were all polite. The food I had was enjoyable. 3 alarm hot wings and fried crab balls. The deserts were much to be desired for their price and they seemed like a lot of wipe cream decoration for filler. I also had the beer sampler, i was kinda hoping there would be some in house or more local beers but it was all national and that kinda seems to defeat the purpose of a sample platter. I like how the restaurant is styled and that the building was repurposed. It's also probably a bad sign that my waitress advised me against getting the marguerita pizza because the tomatoes are iffy. I got the Santa Fe pizza and it was edible, but far from good. This place gets a bad rap but I didn't think it was terrible at all. Service was good, food was fine, and they have a good beer selection. I was annoyed they didn't have any Sam Adams, but that's just my preference. The chicken tenders were interesting. Very thin and had a nice breading but it lacked flavor overall. The BBQ sauce was excellent by the way. The old bay wings were pretty good and all of this was at 11pm on a Thursday. Can't complain. It's a unique spot with lots of room and welcoming atmosphere, far better than the neighboring restaurants. The reason I write is because on Saturday I came for a private event and was very disappointed with what I witnessed from the supposed boss at the restaurant. Sparky lil Asian Lady, she was Super drunk and belligerent and barking down orders at the employees. She was cursing and being disruptive and you could tell her manager and even the Bartenders were embarrassed. This is definitely not a good look and poorly reflects on the restaurant. If you want to have an event here, do it. It was great experience for me and my group. Also when I cam back with a few friends, Server Tim was very nice and attentive. Waters with lemon are a nice touch and giving the option of a prepared split bill and full bill was very professional. And he opened the door for us as we left :) Lexi was the manager and while they were busy I could tell she was working hard and had a smile still. I had been here last year and it wasn't a great experience because of the staff, but it's nice to see they've made changes and are better for it. And the food was good. Average wait time. I came here on a Saturday night with some friends to enjoy the African party that they have upstairs. We originally had plans to meet up somewhere else but that plan failed which led us to be at Station 1 quite early. We sat down at a booth and the hostess handed us menus and then promptly served us water. We weren't really hungry so we decided that we didn't want to order & would just wait until the party started. Another lady came to take our orders and wasn't too pleased that we had decided not to order while still sitting down in "her" booth as she put it. She then told us that we would have to leave Station 1 and then pay to come back inside. I was willing to cooperate up until that point. I have to order something to sit down in your establishment? Fine. However, telling us to leave and come back was just ridiculous being as we were already inside. We just got up from "her booth" and went to the bar to have drinks. Her passive aggressive attitude definitely tainted the earlier portion of the evening. I ordered a Blue Moon for $6 (I think) at the bar -- the bartender's sweet demeanor definitely made up for the waitress' attitude. When that was done, I ordered an $11 Long Island which she made with just a splashhhh of coke.... just how I like it. I ordered another Long Island a little later after the party had started upstairs and the price went up to $14. WTH? Not to mention that this drink definitely had more brown in it then the one downstairs -___- According to the bartender upstairs, "all drink prices go up after 11." Paying more money for less alcohol?? Umm... dead! I tried to talk to the bartender about it but he simply referred me to his bar manager. This blew me more then the situation with the waitress. I didn't try to the food or anything so I can't say whether it's delicious or not, but the menu items seemed appetizing. One of the worst restaurants I have been too. The food is actually pretty good. However the staff is constantly confused because the music is way to loud they cannot hear anything. It took forever to get our drinks! They had to take our order twice because the 1st waiter was confused. They made 2 mistakes on my order and never offered to take anything off the bill. They also wanted us to write down our orders after the meal because they didn't know during the billing process! I left very angry and was really disgusted by the way my party was treated. My 1st and last time going here! Was seated and after 20 minutes had to go get someone to take my order.... strike 1! When my food arrived, it was good! All of a sudden I look down and see a rat... yes a RAT .... running across across my feet! Strike 2.... I immediately lost my appetite and was totally turned off by the entire establishment. One the day of the Redskins vs. Cowboys game too! The drinks were watered down.... yes the soda! My waitress was very nice but needless to say I will not be returning at all! I have been here twice and I have vowed to myself never to return here. My first time was a horrible experience. We ordered a drink that was really nasty and full of blue coloring and the waitress wouldn't take it back cos apparently if she did, it will come out of her paycheck. My friend convinced me to try this place out again since she loved their wings and o boy... that was the greatest mistake ever. We ordered our food (wings) and fries and margaritas. First off, the margaritas arrived and it had chunks of ice in it which seemed like it was made with a broken blender. We waited over an hour for our wings and the waitress (same one from the last time) had such a nasty attitude... saying that they had only one cook and everyone was ordering wings and we came in late (how exactly does the time I showed up have anything to do with it?) The table right next to us, came in about the same time as us and half their table got their food and the rest of the food came when the other half were done eating. How ridiculous is that? We asked to speak to the manager who was a bartender that just got promoted to manager and had not the slightest idea what he was doing. After being so rude and tossing his hair back and forth like Fabio, he offered us complimentary drinks for the wait. Here's where it all goes down south. The table next to us had a drink with a dirty cup and when they realized, they asked the waitress to take it back. She said she wasn't going to take it back and she will have to charge them for it because if she didn't, it will come off her paycheck. They asked to speak to the manager (same guy Mike aka Fabio). He walks up to them and is EXTREMELY RUDE and insists that they will be charged for the drink because they already drank out of it before making a complaint. At this point, I felt like I was in the twilight zone because I have never seen customers disrespected to that level before. PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO I MADE OF THE INTERACTION. It was so horrible that I had to ask our waitress for his boss's number so I could call after I left cos it is absolutely unacceptable to treat anyone the way that table was treated by the manager. I got his boss's number 'Amy' who pretended to try to fix the situation and invited my friend and I back to the restaurant after she pleaded to see the video which I sent her. After that, she stopped responding to my messages to meet up and discuss the situation. Overall, I am HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED at this location and my friends and I will NEVER be returning here. This place was disappointing. It was empty and there was no music. I ordered mini bagel dogs and they were burnt. The wings had feathers still attached. The bartender was very friendly though. She also made a great dirty Martini. read more
