Recently went to enjoy the last bit of summer weather while my family was visiting at the Lighthouse! I had not been here in many years but we all figured it would be nice to walk the trails and take pictures as well as show my family the beauty of long island beaches. It's also a true L.I. landmark! I haven't been here in ages but finally returned on July 4th. It is such a remarkable iconic landmark that is steeped in rich history and abound by natural beauty. The parking lot is super easy and quite affordable. The whole area is simply gorgeous. I could spend the entire day from sunrise to sunset here.. it's that remarkable. I even met the inn keeper here. He had just finished surfing and I showed him a quick photo I snapped of him in action. What a cool guy! And what a cool place this truly is. read more

This review is for the walk from field 5 to the lighthouse. On a beautiful winter day, this is a wonderful daytime activity to get out of the house and get some fresh air. Open year round, you are able to take a short walk from the parking lot of field 5 along a very nice, sturdy, clean wooden bridge path through the dunes that leads to the Fire Island Lighthouse. Once there, you are able to visit the first building, the FI Light Station and view old equipment, free of charge. You can also enter the next building, the actual lighthouse museum, and visit several rooms with maps, old photos and artifacts, as well as a gift shop. From there, you can then pay to climb the lighthouse. I did not do this today but have in the past. It's a short walk up but very narrow. The top offers spectacular panoramic views of Long Island, Fire Island, and the ocean. Its worth the walk up! read more

The boardwalk is closed off because NYS claimed it was not wide enough (one of the volunteers who work at the lighthouse told me this). But everyone still hops over the railing / underneath the railing to utilize the boardwalk. The walk is not too far. Fun outdoor experience. I did the lighthouse tour for the first time, only $10 a person. The views from the top were beautiful. But be prepared to walk up A LOT of stairs if you do the lighthouse tours. 21 flights if I remember correctly. read more

I went walking here with my 2.5 year old son. It was a beautiful day out. We park at Robert Moses Field 5 and walk the boardwalk towards the light house. The walk is really nice. It's on a boardwalk so you don't have really have to worry about ticks or the sand if don't have sandals on. The walk took us maybe 25 mins or so (we are slow walkers and my son like to stop a lot and look around). Once we got to the light house it was really nice. We went inside and looked at all the cool things the had on the wall. My son was too little to walk up the lighthouse but maybe next year. read more

A fun a little stop on our hike from Robert Moses field 5 parking lot to Kismet. Once you enter the lighthouse, you can explore the gift shop and museum area for free. If you want to go up, you need to purchase tickets at the gift shop for $10 per person. It's a very quick trip. It's pretty much a self-guided tour with boards you can read on the way up. You climb a spiral staircase all the way up and when you almost get to the top, you need to hold on to the ropes when you get there. Also, watch your head. There is a volunteer at the top who was so sweet. She was very informative and even helped us take a picture at her favorite spot and she explained and answered questions we had. Oh can walk around outside and get a 360 degree view from the top. Due to Covid and I'm sure spacing, there is a limit of 10 people. At the end you can climb up further and take a look at the lights from the stairs. read more

Going on a day-off to Fire Island, I could not miss the lighthouse! You can drive in from Jones Beach - bypassing the toll booth since you not going to the beaches - and enjoy scenic route; or, you can take Robert Moses Causeway to Ocean Pkwy. (Note that Yelp location is wrong - it is on the very end of Ocean Pkwy to the East) Park in the main area after the toll booth ($10) and just walk to Lighthouse - the whole walk is an elevated boardwalk platform, weaving around dunes and trees, with occasional view of the beaches around (clean white sand beaches - keep that in mind), and sneak peek views of lighthouse itself. Benches along the way are just asking to relax and read the book - which I did. Soooo nice to just sit in peace here! Once you get to main area, there is a site to the left with remaining foundation of the very first lighthouse build on Fire Island; an exhibition hall with history of it and original French light lens; and the standing working lighthouse to the right. The fee to climb 180+ steps to the top is $7, but views are well worth is - but so as climb itself, on the metal grate steps and ropes instead of railings, along the curved brick walls and narrow landings, up, up and up - to the very top, with two tiny ladders leading to the run-around deck. Light-keeper has some stories to tell... Listen to him... And walk around and just see for yourself. On a clear day you can catch panoramic views of the whole Island, and Manhattan on the horizon, how memorable is that? Once, it was the very last point of Fire Island, but sands made new lands there once was just water... I am amazed at this piece of story. Fire Island is well-worth your visit, and so is lighthouse. read more

Looking for a five star trek? Long Island has a gorgeous coastline, and miles of preserved open space along our shores.. thanks to Robert Moses... that's an unwritten but 10 star review. The best treks I have made include the cliffs of Montauk near the light house and the shore there.. and here.. This is one pristine and inspiring walk. The best way to see Fire Island is not on the ferry from Bayshore.. heck no ... don't get on the sea bus... If you drive over the Robert Moses bridge, and down to the furthest east field 5, and park, you can walk up to the trail and head over on foot to the Fire Island lighthouse. Bring the right friend... or you'll lost the vibe. So you will walk a good long while along the path with nice greenery on both sides and the ocean to the south.... When there.. you can enjoy the little quiet gift shop and buy a ticket to climb the Lighthouse rickety round steps to the top.. yeah just do it! lol There's more to the lighthouse trek than the lighthouse... keep going.. From there where can you go? well Fire Island stretches east for miles and can be accessed one of two ways.... a lonnnng walk along the shore....and up to the villages from there.. or my fav.... dial up the Fire Island water taxi.. they will pick up behind the lighthouse on the bayside.. and that's a small boat... so hold on.. these kids vary in their safety training as learned once with mom on board. The taxi stops along the various towns... Ocean Beach is the main town there.. more places to go restaurants... etc... and a good walk back down to the beach.... back south.. if you want to swim... as this is a broad part of Fire Island. To push it further.. you can take the water taxi to Cherry Grove.. and maybe see a transgender beauty contest and have some strong drinks.. I'm hetero but have to say I like the vibe of a community that dances to their own music.. and I did less trekking there.. more exploring.. the places! the places.. lol One good looking guy bartender there showed me how to really make a smoking green apple martini - shake shake shake until so cold it looks like dry ice... I still do that trick...for guests... hahah If doing an all day exploration....and trek.. to get back to the lighthouse.. you will need to make the water taxi drop by 7 ask them and call before or you may have to stay over or walk the shore back.. lol.. they have rules about not dropping people off there in the dark etc.. lol its gets very quiet! If you want to walk along the shore....gnats come out late.. so late is tough. Though a night swim is worth it.. in really warm weather. Not with mom. If just the Lighthouse its still a super nice trek. Bring water, bathing suit and $. This is really picturesque and takes you away from it all much more than even Montauk. read more

A spectacular lighthouse, at 167 feet it is the tallest in all of New York. It was built in 1858 and remains in excellent shape with it's distinctive black and white paint. The whole area surrounding the light is impressive, with great beaches, natures trails and an interpretive center. The light is open in the summer and although the climb to top can be a bit tough, the awesome views form the top will make the effort worth it. The light originally had a huge first order Frensel lens but it is not displayed. The only negative about the lighthouse is that it tends to get crowded in the summer. Very, very crowded. So it can take a bit of patience to fight your way through the crawling traffic. Fortunately there is plenty of parking available if you don't mind a bit of a walk. Of course in the off season you can't get into the lighthouse, but the area is far less crowded and in the winter practically deserted. read more

Beautiful walk from the parking lot of field 5 to the lighthouse. I've climbed the lighthouse twice . It definitely is tough since I'm afraid of heights but worth it. There is a small ladder to climb to get to the viewing area. The view is gorgeous. The gift shop has a few cute items as well. Expect to see some animals on the walk over which is cool. read more

Had a lot of fun visiting the lighthouse! My friends and I came here one weekend from NYC. We took public transportation and the port we were dropped off at was pretty far from the lighthouse. It's roughly about 3/4 of a mile away. It was a long walk in the heat, but it was WORTH IT! We bought a "Beach Getaway" package from MTA, so our admission was already included in the package price we paid. I believe tickets are $7 a person though and you can purchase them once you get to the lighthouse. The walk up the lighthouse isn't too bad. It's 182 steps and the steps are even (which makes a huge difference, believe me). Plus, you get a little certificate of accomplishment at the end! Once you get up there, the view is beautiful. You can see the entire island, it's breathtaking. I really recommend coming here. Great workout and nice view! read more

So I made a trip out to the lighthouse today from NYC. I wanted to get my passport stamped and see and learn about the lighthouse and take some pictures. I even called this morning to check what time they were open till and let them know I was coming. They normally close at 5p but they said on the phone they would be open till 4p. But guess what, I got there at 3:15 and they were closed. Unbelievable! They probably had 2 other visitors today, if that. Good thing we don't have to depend on these people to guide our ships anymore. And I probably would have spent $100 at the lighthouse store. read more

This place is gorgeous, even on a cloudy and rainy day. I loved the museum. I learned so much about the island and surrounding area- it was really fascinating. There were a ton of families, and I think it's pretty good for kids. Definitely wear sneakers because you'll be walking a lot and on all kind of terrain- sand, gravel, and up lots of stairs! The gift shop was really cute and I have my eye on a few items there. We made a stop at the beach and enjoyed the really clean sand- no trash here! There were a lot of different shells on the beach, which were interesting to look over, and another family even had some sand dollars. As we left, we spotted some deer. read more

Lived on LI all my life and never came here before. Boy was I missing out! Really spectacular views from the top and well worth the 108 steps up! The steps are open treads which let a lot of light in and prevent it from feeling claustrophobic. My son bounded up to the top while I took my time, stopping at each window to catch my breath and enjoy the views. The last few steps to the observation area can be a little tricky - remember to go backwards on the way down! The very knowledgeable staff was informative and super friendly to my son. They asked him three questions that he had to find the answers to which made it more interesting for him. If you go towards the end of the day make sure you drive around the whole loop and count the number of deer and foxes you see! read more

On our tour of Long Island light houses were were told to see the Fire Island light. We lucked out on a sunny day - but super windy. The parking is a good ways from the light house, but the walkway is well maintained and fun to see the deer in the area. We weren't able to go up the light house because of the winds, but the walk around the area provided us with some great pictures. Would highly recommend! read more

My friend and I visited Fire Island for the day and wouldn't have dare missed visiting the lighthouse. We trekked up the steep and curvy stairs to the top to witness the beautiful views. There was a staff person on top answering questions and supervising the area which was a little scary and breathtaking at the same time. We took a whole bunch of selfies, pics together and with the staff and just enjoyed the scenery and air before we headed back down. Once we finished we received our cute certificate of completion for climbing the lighthouse. They have a small gift shop to peruse. Overall, this is definitely a cool attraction to check out if you're in the area. read more

I spent Columbus Day weekend in Long Island visiting some dear friends of mine. (It had been too long since we last saw each other.) They live in Mount Sinai on the north fork of Long Island. After spending Saturday in wine country, we drove out to the Fire Island Lighthouse on Sunday afternoon. It's located on the Fire Island National Seashore, a beautiful national park. Visitors park in a central parking lot and then walk along the mile boardwalk to get to the lighthouse. The boardwalk is a beautiful stroll as it snakes through the dunes. After a fairly muggy weekend, the stroll along the boardwalk was brisk. The breeze blowing in off the ocean was cool and I was wishing I had brought a jacket. When we approached the lighthouse there was a wedding going on outside the keeper's home on the terrace. (Apparently it is a popular location for weddings, but you cannot have the reception there.) The keeper's house has been converted into a museum that covers the rescue service that helped save victims of shipwreck. It was actually pretty interesting. Unfortunately, the lighthouse itself was closed, so we were not able to walk up to the top. The webpage says that you can see New York City on a clear day from the top. I imagine that it would be worth the effort to make the climb. After we kicked around the keeper's house for a bit, and my friend Beth subjected me to a souvenir wine stopper from the gift shop, we wandered back along the boardwalk. As we neared the parking lot there was a doe posing for visitors. She seemed very accustomed to having people around. There are several signs asking that visitors not feed the deer. I couldn't travel all that way without putting my toes in the ocean. Despite the chill, we slipped off our shoes and walked through the sand to the water. It was brisk! The dusk was settling in and as we looked back at the lighthouse the light came on beginning its nightly circling signaling to the ships. read more

After a day of laying out on the beach, we decided to take a walk towards and visit the lighthouse. The staff is friendly and they can keep your belongings behind the gift store counter so your hands are free to use the railings while ascending. While it is a little exercise getting to the top, the view is beautiful especially on a sunny day. There are parts along the circular walk way where the wind will be blowing the hardest so be sure to remove and hold on to belongings. read more

I love lighthouses. I love them even more when you can climb them. Through the Long Island Visitors Bureau, I found and booked a sunrise lighthouse tour. The tour was great, we first got to go into the building next to the lighthouse and the keeper explained how the lens worked and about the first and now current towers. Then we moved on to the actual lighthouse and climbed. A word of warning, the steps of this tower are the original and they are flaking rust. I was happy that I was wearing a hoodie because all the other people that had bare heads also had years of dirt and rust falling on them. When we got to the top, because we were part of this special tour, we got to stay up there pretty much as long as we wanted. Unfortunately it was a cloudy day so we didn't actually see the sun rise as we would have hoped but it was really an amazing experience. The keeper was up there to answer any questions we had. Its important to note that I went there in early October 2012. This was only about 3 weeks before Superstorm Sandy. When we asked questions about storms and flooding and the whole barrier island, no one had any idea what would happen by the end of the month. I had taken so many pictures as well as panoramic pictures. I would be very interested to see how the island has changed since the storm. When the tour was over, we got to go down to the visitor center and go through the museum. A light breakfast was offered and we all received travel coffee mugs which was awesome. I would love to go back in the future. read more

We had a nice long walk to the lighthouse from Ocean Beach and then took a water taxi back. A pretty heavy storm rolled in just about the time we got there, so we were not able to go up to the top because of the lightening. They suggested we stay until the storm rolled through but we had dinner plans and could not stay. The lighthouse is beautiful and inside you'll find a gift shop and art gallery. This was a very enjoyable experience and I would recommend it to anyone. If you're not into walking, the water taxi is very nearby; just call ahead so they can schedule it. We will come back so we can see up top and the building next door. read more

Such an amazing experience yesterday when we, a group of 5 friends from Madagascar, decided to visit Robert Moses State Park. We parked at Field 5 then walked the 3/4 mile passover to the LightHouse. The giftshop is a tiny cutie boutique where you purchase ur tickets for the visit 7$/Adult. Climbed the 182 steps up then enjoyed the outstanding view and gentle breeze ! I was born and raised on Long Island in my entire life. Spent the majority of my summers at Jones Beach and Fire Island. Unfortunately summer of 2012 had to relocate to Connecticut and we don't have what I call real beaches here. So while I was down for a wedding on June 11th I came down on the 9th Thru the 14th and was dying to go to the beach. My boyfriend and I drove to field 5 and ironically I had never been to the lighthouse Norwalk to the top that specific White House sorry Park - field 5 walked all the way there I walked up the hundred steps and down. Then we walk down to the beach with the length of the beach and then back to the truck. It was a beautiful day the lighthouse was supposed to close at 4 we got into the light house around 4:15 they were still open and they let us up.... they said we'd be the last ones up however there were a few other couples they came after us so they let them up I guess they figured with the beautiful weather they might as well stay open a little bit longer. It's so well-organized inside and the views are just phenomenal. So glad I was able to do this while I was down there this past week. read more

Beautiful place to get away from the concrete mess that is Manhattan. This was the first time I went up a lighthouse and I definitely think it was worth it. I have a personal fascination with lighthouses and this one felt so homely. The view up top is breathtaking. The tour guide, Alex, is beyond nice. My boyfriend and I paid $7 each for the tour and to go up the lighthouse - I remember it was a Friday special. Check out the beach as well -- I'm definitely going back to visit this place again. Bring some snacks with you because you won't wanna leave this place once you park your car. I brought some wonderful memories back to the city that day! read more

I saw this place on someone's blog online and visited. I've been to Robert Moses quite a few times and never knew that there was a lighthouse nearby. I did not go up to the lighthouse but walked around the place and went to the small beach area. It is not crowded here so pretty nice to just chill peacefully. Next time I am going to take my books to read and just lay by the beach and read listening to the waves. It says no pets allowed but a lot of people bring their dogs here and maybe this lighthouse area is separated from Robert Moses and pets can enter this place. I will try to search up and see if I can bring my puppy next time. When the weather is nice or you are by Robert Moses to BBQ or something, please stop by this place. You wont regret it! read more

I climbed the lighthouse. I enjoyed doing that. Until I reached the top, when some rotten old man started yelling at me something I didn't understand as I attempted to ascend the last set of steps to the top. As I walked up the steps (he was at the top), he launched into screaming at me, which included him bellowing "WHY WON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME????!!!!!!!". I had no idea who he was. Freak. Then he chased me around the top of the lighthouse, continuing to yell, which is when I discovered that he works for the lighthouse! I told him I would not be screamed at, he just kept on. I had to leave. As I was walking down the first flight of steps, he continued to yell at me about the method I should use to walk down the steps, I told him again to stop screaming at me, that I would not tolerate it, and that I did not require instructions on walking. I turned and kept walking down, and he called me a stupid bitch. Unbelievable. I told the staff at the bottom of the lighthouse. They were generally indifferent. I wrote a letter to Amanda Vaskas, Volunteer Coordinator for the lighthouse. She offered no apology. Without stating it outright, she closed ranks and practically defended that FREAK SHOW. Don't bother with this insufferable pack of self-important gerbils. $8 to climb the lighthouse. WHATever. read more

Drove out here on a Saturday from Brooklyn which isn't too bad except in the summer where there is always a painful amount of traffic. If you could make it through the traffic, the views here are worth it. We parked at Robert Moses state park field 5 and walked over. It's about a 10-12 minute walk on the boardwalk. Not sure how long if you walk along the beach. It is 10$ to park at the field and it's free for senior citizens but only on weekends. Once you walk to the lighthouse area, there's a little museum looking thing and then a gift shop next to it. The gift shop has decently clean bathrooms and water and souvenirs. Tickets are 8$ to go up the lighthouse which is 182 steps but aren't too bad if you're a reasonably healthy person. The last set of stairs are a little rickety but manageable and once you get up there, you're rewarded with beautiful views of the beach and the island. Staff here is very nice as well and if you get lucky you might spot deer along the walks. read more

usually the experience at the lighthouse is enjoyable, but today students groups were visiting. this is usually not a problem either, but we were shushed by the volunteer coordinator. The students were eating lunch and there was not an educational program happening. Students were eating lunch and talking to one another. We were having conversation and our children (3 years old) were being children. If you do not want the public in when class events are happening - it should be closed to the public. This is unacceptable and the volunteer coordinator should not work in a public facility. I have the workers card and I plan to complain to the President. read more
