This was an absolute blast. Really simple concept: you fill a bowl with your choice from a very diverse mix of proteins, starches, and veggies, then choose from one of a dozen sauces. You hand them to the chef behind a huge round grill and he preps them as you watch. After surveying the ingredients I chose, he made some perceptive suggestions as to what else would complement the dish and then grilled it all up. My only suggestion to a first-new customer is to not fill the bowl on your first time through. It's all you can eat, so start with a small portion so you don't immediately fill up. That way you can explore the almost infinite variety of dishes you can create. There are "recipes" available via QR code and the chef recommended, for my second pass, a veggie heavy chicken dish with garlic, ginger and pineapple which turned out beautifully. Fun for families and very affordable. Plus a killer view of the SF Bay and Alcatraz. Highly recommended. read more

I hadn't been to a Mongolian style grill experience in close to 25 years. The 10 year old had been given the assignment of picking a restaurant for after we went whale watching. The 10 year old loves a good choose your own adventure dining experience and this fit the bill. We went for lunch on a Friday, weekday lunch prices ate $25/adults and $13/children 4-11. Per staff you can go back as many times as you would like for two hours. They have a lot veggie, pasta/grain and meat options. Proteins for non-meat either included two kinds of beans, protein pasta and tofu. They have an abundance of sauces which are well labeled in terms of Vegan, Vegetarian and GF. Because it is a buffet-type set up cross contamination does occur, so would likely not be great fit for severe allergies. Food is also cooked all on the same giant grill. However, they do clean it after each round of cooking, and likely would be open to cleaning it prior to cooking your food should you be concerned about cross contamination. Staff were friendly. Would say, it was a bit hard to find staff at times, however, not an excessive wait. Restaurant was clean as well as bathrooms. We had a blast. Something that made this place stand out from the usual dinner spots was that you could choose what you wanted to include in your meal. For mine, I picked out a combination of shrimp, noodles, vegetables, and sauces, which was really cool to watch cook on the large grill. The ingredients seemed fresh and the shrimp stayed juicy. The staff was on it when it came to keeping the plates clean and the area organized, which just added to the upbeat time. not going to lie I was super excited about coming here because of all the Instagram videos I've seen my friends wanted to come here so we came with my bbf one night we waited about 10 minutes outside. There was another group in front of us and we were seated in the booth in the corner. The set up was OK, but I was expecting a lot more when it came to the bars we spoke with the bartender and we pretty much asked him like how was your day stuff and like that it was not taken well at all. The waiter was incredibly friendly and great (Nikhil). He was apologetic that they weren't able to offer any mixed drinks at the bar since apparently the bartender left (this was at 6:45pm). They still offered beer and wine. Ambiance was fun and you couldn't ask for a better view. Stunning. Food was good. It is kind of like a buffet of uncooked stuff that you fill a bowl with and then bring it to the cook. One downside is there is only one giant skillet so if your vegetarian, your food might be cooked 5 inches away from a pile of seafood or steak and the cook uses the same utensils to handle all food (we asked if he was able to use a non-seafood covered spatula for the vegetarian with us and he said no). A few of the ingredients from my concoction did end up getting mixed into my wife's food. Overall it is a fun experience and my kids LOVED it. There is absolutely no value in the food for the price they charge--nearly $36 for dinner just for the buffet. The food was not fresh; the selection of ingredients at the "interactive" bar looked like they had been sitting out way too long, and the quality was middling at best. To make matters worse, the tip was preset at a staggering 25% on the handheld terminal, which feels like a total shakedown for tourists. Between the lukewarm, uninspired food and the aggressive "suggested" tipping, this place is the definition of a tourist trap. There are much better ways to spend $40+ per person in San Francisco. Came on the weekend, we were asked if we had reservation, which we didn't, but they sat us right away. Place was probably 40% occupied. Service was slow, we saw our server 2x: when he picked up the dirty dishes from the table and when he brought the check. The host was the one we saw the most. After getting seated and waiting a few minutes, we decided to just get up to the food bar, we've been to similar places so you can figure out what to do. Food was ok, the bowls were tiny so you had to go in at least 3x for food. The line at the grill moves slow, and even though they take a lot of people's bowls it goes by slow. Some parts of the food bar was messy or out. When we were onto our 2nd trip to the bar, host brought us the waters. Again, no waiter until then. They need to put signs up on where the line begins it's very confusing. Also the 2 guys cooking the food are NOT good they do alot of personal talking and the one guy does WAY to much banging of the spatula flipping it high smacking it down and who can do it the hardest. I noticed the other people were getting annoyed with it too. The cooks just spent way too much time banging their spatula. Hardly saw out server i had to flag another server for some more iced tea. Came here after a night tour of Alcatraz. I was worried we'd be turned away because we came within an hour of closing and reservations were closed online but the hostess was warm and welcomed us in, no problem. Upon being sat we were walked through the experience but I was too hungry to follow along because I missed the memo on sauce in a separate container and my husband missed the memo on pack the bowl. Needless to say our first round was mediocre at best, but that may have been our fault. The second round we learned from our mistakes and were both more satisfied with our second plate. Still, overall I don't think I would go out of my way to come back despite the social media appeal. Pros, staff is friendly. All you can eat is all you can eat, even after closing which was a big bonus. Cons, the build your bowl stations are a bit of a mess in terms of sloppy and bottle necks. The cooks can be hard to communicate with, my friend had her order messed up by a cook using another patron's sauce which soured our whole experience. Tips, if you're hungry, a bowl of veggies and seafood will cook quicker and may result in a shorter wait time. I can't imagine the wait during a busy time, so maybe come during off peaks. Go surf and turf only if you're a fan of well done meat. Also do not come here with allergies as this place screams cross-contamination hazard. I was really looking forward to this place because the closest Mongolian BBQ spot near me was shut down with the latest closure of your old school malls. Fire & Ice is an amazing "All U can eat" place right at Pier 39 in San Francisco. We visited this restaurant to celebrate my wife's birthday and man it was nice. Great views of Pier, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, lots of ferries and boats passing, etc. We visited on Sunday in the afternoon around 2:30PM and it wasn't that busy at all. We tried different variances of sauces and pasta/veggies combination every time we got up to get seconds. Being a strict vegetarian it was very important for us to not get our food mixed up with meats and loved how they have separate sections for pasta/noodles/rice, veggies, meats, seafood, sauces and spices to make sure it doesn't get mixed with each other. We requested our food to be cooked separately and the two gentleman at the grill were more than happy to accommodate it and cleaned a quarter section (for 5 of us) for our food to be cooked. Because of not so busy times, there were only 2-3 servers and it took some time to get our drinks served. If they are busy or if you strict Vegetarian or Vegan like us, you can also request your food to be cooked inside the kitchen as they have a separate grill or something they can cook your meals separately. One suggestion to keep in mind: I called in and made a reservation for Sunday afternoon on Friday and I was give a verbal confirmation, but when I called in on Sunday morning on our way to the restaurant, I was surprised to hear that there was no reservation for us. I talked to Jerry and he saved our day by making another reservation and immediately received a confirmation text as well as email. So please make sure you receive a written confirmation if you make a reservation. Shout Out to JERRY & Chelsey for accommodating us and going over and above to make our experience enjoyable and comfortable. Parking: There is a parking garage right across from Pier 39 and also there are many other street parking, other garages, etc options around the restaurant. Location: Great location (all the way at the end/back of Pier 39). You'll have to make your way through tourists, but per our experience, it's worth the efforts. Okay, so I had settled on a 4 star review of the restaurant, but bumped this up to a 5 star after my interaction with the wonderful staff. Going in, we were familiar with and fans of the Fire & Ice dining concept having previously visited the Anaheim & S. Lake Tahoe locations. Mongolian-grill type restaurants are 1 of my absolute favorites! Here in S.F., there were some minor unforseen hiccups, but this was more than compensated for overall. It's a bit of a task and maze getting here dodging throngs of tourists and making it to the restaurant entrance from the opposite end of Pier 39 alongside the Embarcadero. However, once here, diners are rewarded with "ooh-ahh" priceless views of San Francisco Bay during the meal. A jaw-dropping backdrop, in short. Another smaller issue fairly mentioned is the cut-off time policy between lunch & dinner pricing transparency. And a wonky, work-in-progress Rewards sign-up that we weren't able to launch during the visit. On-duty restaurant manager Ken, an East-coast native was a gem of a fellow who introduced himself and a great interaction followed. Equal praise for server Luka, a native of Serbia...and a sweetheart of a hostess whose name I didn't get. They, along with the great, fresh food really aced this 1st time visit. Speaking of the food, they've got offerings you won't find at most any other Mongolian grill. Such as sirloin steak, fresh seafood like prawns/shrimp and overall much higher quality choices than at similar places. And it's AYCE (all you can eat)! Just use a fresh bowl everytime cave people (jk). An inviting bar area where single diners can nosh is a plus too. The bathrooms were very clean and kept up nicely. All things considered: the million dollar views of the Bay, the wonderful food, staff hospitality and the notorious affordability of the S.F. area in general...and Fire & Ice delivers one heckuva' dining value here @ Pier 39 in my humble opinion. Was curious to try based off the social media coverage during its recent opening. Pier 39 isn't the ideal spot because HI TOURISTS. But what the heck, we went in for a late lunch on Friday and the place was empty (so note the timing if you'd rather not deal with crowds.) Upon entering, we stepped into a bright, clean, spacious new space, a sprawling view of Alcatraz, ample seating and tables, and the grill and DIY stations toward the back. Priced at $36/pp, all you can eat. Honestly, after 1 pass, I was almost full. The 2nd pass was almost forced and I chose veggies only. I am definitely not the type of person to do well at an AYCE. But if you crave quantity and have an empty stomach on cheat day, this is your place. You have a huge assortment of noodles, rice, proteins, veggies and sauces to choose from, which could be daunting for newbies or those who can't make decisions on the spot. Pack your ingredients into a small steel bowl, hand it over to the grill master who will cook it up--he'll ask if you'd like butter, salt and pepper--and the server picks it up and brings it to your table. Interesting concept. Our server was attentive and friendly, frequently checking in on us, offering us napkins and refills. It was a pleasant experience and satisfied my own curiosity. However, I'm not sure I'd return for the price. I think if there was a location in the peninsula, it could be a hit. But Pier 39 is an acquired taste for locals. read more

The food selection is interesting, but calling this "Mongolian BBQ" feels like a stretch. Instead of the usual flavors, they offer seafood like salmon and tuna, steak bites, ribs, bacon, chicken cubes, and even hot dogs and hamburger options (with buns). Sauces range from Alfredo to green tomatillo -- again, not exactly traditional. The biggest issue? The value and the hygiene. For the price, the quality of ingredients was incredibly underwhelming -- cheap cuts and filler items. You're paying a premium for a gimmicky concept and a nice view, not great food. And while the grill cook was friendly and clearly passionate, the showmanship quickly crossed into unsanitary and obnoxious. Throwing used bowls that guests have handled onto the grill area -- just to try to bounce them into a bin and miss most of the time -- was gross and unnecessary. Even worse was seeing him wipe sweat from his face with a towel and then keep working without washing his hands or changing gloves. That's just unacceptable in any food service environment. Overall, it's a fun concept in theory, but overpriced and poorly executed. This was our first time coming here. Came on a Saturday 3pm, there was open seating everywhere! Staff and cook were friendly, we sat at the window overlooking the water, food was good. I had 3 bowls, husband had 4 bowls, and I could have eaten more if I wasn't so full (2 bowls only pictured) Money is worth it especially if eat a lot. Service was fast but there weren't a lot of people at the time. It definitely started to get crowded towards the end of our stay.
