Exacting your pound of flesh at any reputable steakhouse these days has gotten prohibitively expensive for all the economic reasons there's no need to recount here. And of course, the ala carte nature of the menu that these types of restaurants have perfected never disappoints the green eyeshade crew in the back office. That said, Fire and Oak delivered a superlative experience that made my subsequent poverty well worth it. I've been here at least a dozen times, and it's consistently been one of my favorite places, which is why this visit was a little disappointing. I have to assume the chef was just having an off day because this experience wasn't up to their usual standards. The chicken lollipops were not very good, and the pork chop was noticeably chewy. That said, I still love the atmosphere, the service has always been solid, and my previous visits have all been excellent. We went out for a birthday and the spinach dip was amazing. I got a pasta dish Rigatoni and the pasta was overcooked. I had my husband and mother-in-law taste just to make sure it wasn't me- they said the same. The texture was gooey kind of like a gummy bear. I ended up ordering an appetizer as my entre in the meantime. We had the Key Lime Pie to share for dessert which was really delicious- definitely recommend this place for drinks and dessert. The sauce to the rigatoni was really good so I was disappointed. I will try one more time in the future to eat here- but will not be my first choice anytime soon. read more

My family and I have gone to Fire and Oak since before covid. Our last time there will be my last. There are fewer choices on the menu and they are all over priced.The waiters and food servers are not knowledgeable about the menu and lack the ability to communicate. Fire and Oak adjoins a hotel in Montvale. There's plenty of parking in their lot and crowds vary. I brought a work group here for a weekday happy hour. The happy hour (4-6) drink menu is a great deal and all cocktails were enjoyed by everyone - martinis, mixed drinks. Regular menu prices here seem steep in places, but comparable in other areas. E.g. entree salads and pizzas are reasonable, but $24 for a fried calamari app seems off The pizzas and sushi rolls were all good. We tried one of each and everyone was happy. I wasn't impressed with the chicken lollipop app as they just tasted like chicken covered with a generic BBQ sauce. They put an automatic 22% gratuity on our bill, which surprised me. Auto gratuities are typical for large groups, but I've never seen one added that's over 18-20%. I would never bring my family here. Not my kind of place, but many in the area like it for the trendiness. Quality of the food was at least good. read more

My husband and I dined here and had an overall solid meal. The waitress was very friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is clean and modern. It's next to a hotel, so it was fairly busy for a week night. The portions were large, we definitely ordered more than we needed. The spinach artichoke dip and truffle fries were both great starters to share (and we had leftover fries). We also tried the coconut shrimp and avocado roll. I wasn't a fan of this, it had way too much coconut and was overpowering. For my entree, I had the simply grilled salmon. We were a bit disappointed tonight as a part of a special menu for Valentine's Day. Beet Salad and Buratta were a good start and then it went south. The short ribs (w scallops) were mushy and lacked taste, the lobster risotto was lacking lobster (and watery). The desserts were uneventful. As a matter of fact, the crème brûlée was not "charred" on top and was a bit watery from what seemed like pineapple juice. I'd avoid the "special menu" events, but continue as a regular. Attached to the Courtyard Marriott since 2009 off of Chestnut Ridge Road in Montvale, my partner and I decided on dinner at this establishment. The reservation was easily made via OpenTable. Upon entering Fire and Oak as first-timers, we were greeted by the host offering patrons four unique experiences in separate and distinct areas of the restaurant. Just to the left of the bar is the elevated Candle Room. With its soaring high ceilings, the Main Dining Room suggests the views of the gleaming open kitchen. Their Upper Balcony Dining Room renders a magnificent view of the main dining room. The private Oak Room is ideal for business presentations or private social gatherings. We were seated immediately in the Candle Room with a dim, warm, inviting, and upscale/cosmopolitan vibe. Their menu contained an eclectic assortment of high-quality options with steak, fish, chicken, pork, and sushi to meet just about anyone's palate. As a starter, we decided on F&O Mac 'n' Cheese and Slow Braised Meatballs. As our main entree, we opted for Cabernet Braised Short Rib of Beef and BBQ Pork Ribs served with Coleslaw and substituted Sautéed Spinach instead of Fries. The flavors were fresh, unique, and simply amazing. However, we were disappointed in the Mac 'n' Cheese by using some kind of mozzarella cheese, making it bland, dry, and stringy. The dishes were beautifully prepared. The portion was healthy. The price was comparable to the area and worth every penny. The staff are well trained and service-oriented. Our server, Hawkins, was prompt, friendly, professional, and engaging. While touring the restaurant, I exchanged a few words with Patrick, the general manager, and he gave me a tip to take a wonderful picture of the amazing wine bottle room. As the restaurant filled up, it definitely got louder, and we had to talk louder to hear each other. If the above-mentioned New American menu items have left one's mouth watering, there's only one thing to do: visit Fire and Oak, which we can recommend. read more

The room block for our wedding was at the Courtyard by Marriott in Montvale, so Fire and Oak was the perfect choice for our rehearsal dinner. Conveniently connected to the hotel, Fire and Oak had a really cool night time vibe that echoed NY night life. Josh, the owner, made booking our event super easy. We booked the balcony room that offered a private space and overlooked the entire restaurant floor. They offered a four course meal: family style for 3 different appetizers, choice of a salad, an entree, and an assortment of full sized desserts. The portions were extremely generous and even with that volume, the quality of the food did not falter. They also took initiative and offered us boxes to take the food home after each course. We stated with Johnnie Walker on the rocks followed by Châteneuf du Pape. The drinks were sizeable and the wine price point as expected. Where they exceeded my expectations is the lump crab cakes, they were huge and were crab. Unlike places that usually add filler. They served it with amazing French fries and a delicious slaw. Serious FOOD SAFETY CONCERNS and contamination... My friend ordered a salmon salad, specifically requesting no blue cheese. After two or three bites, she was hit with tons of blue cheese in the greens and coating the bottom of the salmon. We mentioned it to the server, who kindly apologized and quickly took the dish away. A few minutes later, they returned with the salad. I thought the salmon looked odd at first but no one else thought anything of it because why would they? After one bite of the salmon, she found more blue cheese, and said it tasted like they'd run the salmon under water. When we flipped it over, there were still remnants of blue cheese underneath and it was clear they used the same bitten piece. We were all stunned. In my entire life, I've never seen a restaurant at any price point, high and low, make such a critical mistake, then reheat and return the same contaminated food. This raises HUGE contamination concerns for anyone with allergies as it could easily be deadly. All eight of us agreed we'd never witnessed anything like this before. My family and I were deeply upset, since we understand how dangerous food contamination and allergies are as it can truly be a life or death situation. And for a $40 salad (which is already overpriced), not replacing the contaminated food properly and instead Reheating and Re-serving it felt cheap and unsafe. The rest of the meal didn't help. The starters were decent: the calamari was okay, a bit oily, but not bad. The mac and cheese came out warm and was good. The $60 filet mignon was underwhelming as well and tasted okay at best. Out of thirteen or so dishes, none stood out in much of a positive way. We kept thinking that fast food restaurants serve higher quality dishes. The lava cake was underwhelming as well and tasted like something from a children's toy oven. The tiramisu was good but not memorable. All the food seemed like it was made just for looks with the way it tasted. All 8 of us coming in hungry and not have eaten anything for 7+ hours, none of us were excited to take another bite after the first few tastes of eleven out of thirteen dishes. Another thing that caught everyone's attention was the way the champagne was poured. It seemed like they were purposely heavy-pouring each glass, filling them almost to the top so that the very last glass would come up short and they could offer another bottle. Champagne usually isn't poured that full for a toast, so it felt like it could've been intentional, maybe taught by management. We also noticed the utensils looked like they'd just been wiped down, not fully washed. And on the table were the cheap disposable chopsticks which felt really out of place for a "fancy," higher-priced restaurant where a single sushi roll is $20. Simple things like that stand out and really add up with it being one thing after another. Places that charge half the price offer a better dining experience and reusable chopsticks that cost just cents when ordered in bulk. Overall, seems like a cheap restaurant and I would not come here again. Our server himself was fantastic. He was very friendly and was attentive, always checking in with us all and topping off our drinks so no one went thirsty. Again, our server was truly great, very kind nice service on his end. This was purely a kitchen and management mistake. This situation was unacceptable and could have been much more serious. We're lucky it wasn't. Food safety should always be a priority. And honestly, never in my life have I experienced an issue like this. read more

Decided on a late dinner last night and Fire & Oak had a table available! Been there before but not recently, welp the 1 Star is for the West coast oysters and drinks and the 2nd Star for our amazing waitress! Let's begin we had oysters as appetizer, delicious then the entrees came, the mussels Fra Diavlo was watery and not spicy. My sesame tuna salad came with no tuna, lots of lettuce, barely any avocado and a few strands of soba noodles with a small smear of peanut sauce! Dessert was worse the coconut crème brûlée was terrible, the custard was watery and bland and the pineapple compote was just sour. The Oreo cheesecake was slightly better but a bit gritty! Oh the bill was over $200! Not impressive will not be going back. read more

We decided to give Fire and Oak in Montvale a second chance to celebrate a good friend's birthday. Our previous visit had been marred by tuna tartare that simply didn't taste fresh, but we were hopeful that was a one-off experience. We arrived with a party of 15 and immediately identified the birthday celebrant to the staff to ensure a smooth evening. Drinks came out promptly and the evening started off great. We were sitting in a somewhat private room at a long table, which made it easy to speak amongst our group. Unfortunately, the meal for our celebrant came out about 20 minutes after everyone else's meal. This put a damper on the night as it created an incredibly awkward situation...especially given the fact that the restaurant staff knew that it was HIS birthday. To make matters worse, the food quality issues from our past visit resurfaced. A few members of our party ordered Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna Steak, and once again, found the quality poor and the taste "very fishy." I should point out that the staff tried to make things right, but by this time, our celebrant just had enough and wanted to move on. Upon receiving the bill, we saw the returned dish on it along with a 22% auto-grat. I'm an extremely generous tipper and always offer 20% or greater, but likely wouldn't have offered 22% in this case. I found it quite presumptuous to run the 22% given how our night went. Ultimately the returned meal was removed from the tab, but only after we raised the issue. Needless to say, Fire and Oak is off our dining list. read more

Food is now subpar and service is worse. I've been coming here for nearly 6 years now but irregularly and only on business. This is my first return in nearly a year and I had hopes based on prior experience. Let's start food wise. The ahi tuna salad is still good but pales in comparison to similar poke bowls less than a mile away but nearly twice the price. Their seafood chowder is clam chowder trying to disguise itself as bad jambalaya and failing at both. Their loaded baked potato might be the best item on the menu but that's not saying a lot since it's still COLD in the middle. But the service-that has gone in the tank. Inattentive servers who wouldn't leave a bottle of tap water at your table but rather leave you high and dry for 15+ minutes at a time. Bartenders who cannot operate the tv as well as my 12 year old and leave scoreguides blocking half the screen despite requests. Rude. Inattentive. Worthless. Their cocktails are as expensive as they are unimaginative and relatively tasteless. Their key lime pie is laughably bad by even northern Florida standards. "We do seafood, steak and sushi but none of it well" should be their motto. Oh. And despite being attached to the hotel you cannot charge to your room so enjoy that fellow business traveler-no points for you. Their best asset is their ambiance which while still louder than a sports arena is still pretty. But like a gorgeous love interest with no talent or brains it's best left with a hearty handshake and goodbye. read more

Who would have thought that such a great restaurant would be connected to a hotel chain? Fire and Oak is situated in a very nice part of Bergen County, but on the same premises as a Marriot Courtyard. We arrived for a 6pm dinner on a Friday evening and the restaurant parking lot was PACKED! The restaurant was pretty busy inside, but there were barely any parking spots in the lot already. When we stepped in, we were shrouded in darkness with the bar to the right and seating to the left. Soon after, we were whisked away to the back into a very large dining room. Loved everything about it. It had an elegant feel to it, yet it didn't feel like you were dining in some fancy restaurant with some folks casually dressed. Honestly, it had the perfect balance between intimate date and just casual dinner with friends/family. The menu is very "American Grill"-oriented meaning it sort of has a hodgepodge of items. We ended up starting with the Crispy Truffle Parmesan Fries and Crispy Long Island Calamari, followed by a few entrees - Cup & Char Pizza, Fire & Oak Slow Roasted Prime Rib and Pan Roasted Barnegat Light Day Boat Scallops, which was one of the daily specials. First, those Crispy Truffle Parmesan Fries! My goodness! I have never seen more fries on a plate/bowl than this starter here as it was served in a giant pasta bowl. It was addictively delicious, but absolutely portion overkill. However, you'll know where those $18 went. Next, the Crispy Long Island Calamari. Excellent! Super crispy and we loved every bite of it. The portion was perfect for our family of 4. Onto entrees - the Cup & Char Pizza. We're a Roni cup loving family and the roni cups were good, but the pizza was just OK. Unfortunately, our kids did not like it at all because the sweet cherry peppers had a kick to it. For me, it was not bad, but it was not great either. Not sure if it was the sweetness of the pie. As for our individual entrees, my wife got the Fire & Oak Slow Roasted Prime Rib and it was as advertised. The prime rib was gynormous and delicious. When I previewed the menu prior to coming here, it was the one item I was targeting and it absolutely delivered on all of the boxes. As for the Pan Roasted Barnegat Light Day Boat Scallops, which came with saffron lobster risotto + asparagus + chive oil, it was such a big, big letdown. The 5 scallops on the plate were way overcooked, which led them to be dry and chewy. The saffron lobster risotto was not cooked well either. Risotto tends to be a hit or miss at restaurants due to the challenging nature of cooking it and it was a major miss here. We wrapped up our dinner with a Warm Chocolate Lava Cake and, well, you can't go wrong there. Let's just say it was nice way to end the night. Honestly, I would probably come back here because most of the food was solid and the ambiance was fantastic. I would definitely give them another shot despite the few misses. My husband and I both ordered the Blackened Atlantic Swordfish steak w roasted sweet potato & poblano hash, "voodoo" sauce & pico de gallo on top. When we ordered, the waiter told us it was his favorite dish and WOW he did not lie! The combination of multiple flavors that complemented each other so well was awesome. You must try it. The Tuna Tartar on tortilla chips with avocado, samba mayo and ginger was the best I've ever had! The margaritas were excellent! Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. I don't have a single picture to post because I was hungry when we got there and the food was too delicious to stop eating and take a picture. We started with the truffle fries and Mac and cheese. The fries were very good, hard to stop eating. It's actually a pretty massive plate. I got the prime rib and sweet potato hash. Very well seasoned and done to my preferred temp. My husband got the short rib and he also had no complaints. Our drinks were spot on. Not too strong but enough to know it's not just juice. For dessert I had the chocolate lava cake (also very good) and my husband had the Oreo cheesecake. He said it was the best Oreo cheesecake he had ever had. The prices weren't bad and the food was worth it. Cons: The only con I can think of is it's pretty dark. I saw a number of people use the flashlight on their phones to see the menu.
