It was getting a wee bit late for lunch (~1:30 PM), and I was quite hungry, so when I passed by Pica Pau and saw how packed it was, I knew I had to drop by to give it a try. It's absolutely bustling inside; there are several tables inside and outside, and you can generally just seat yourself as long as there's an open slot. There are very few tourists here -- another great sign -- so the menus will all be in Portuguese, and it will be hit or miss as to whether your server can translate for you. However, the menu is pretty simple, so it's easy enough to intuit what they say (or to just use Google Translate) -- the menu is spread across three blackboards, one for daily specials, another for seafood, and the last for other meat dishes. Everything is just twelve euros for lunch, and it also comes with a drink and bread. You genuinely can't go wrong with anything on their menu. My mom and I both ordered from their seafood menu, and the fish is super fresh and grilled to perfection. It has a perfect char on the outside, and is super flaky and tender on the inside; they add a hit of salt and a side of lemon, but the fish honestly doesn't need much else. The fish also comes with a side of boiled veggies and potatoes, which are a great, neutral accompaniment to the fish. I ordered the swordfish, and my mom got the sea bass, but we ended up splitting both of the dishes between us (especially since they both conveniently came with two pieces). Both were phenomenal, but I did enjoy the swordfish a tiny bit more; it was a bit more tender, and they also descaled the swordfish but did not for the seabass, so it was a slightly easier eating experience.

We made midday (2pm) reservations a month in advance. Upon arrival, aside from the red Micheline plaque, you would never guess this was a such a heralded gem. The entry door is so narrow I had to scoot sideways (and I'm slim!). The inside is very simple - plain wood tables and chairs laid out in a narrow quaint L shape. The owner and the host both greeted us and we each promptly opted for their reasonably priced 7-course 54 Euro tasting menu. The restaurant is famous for buying a whole pig, typically on Thursdays, and then utilizing every single part in some inventive way for its weeklong tasting menu. And, has the #nosetotail moniker for bragging rights. I posted photos of each course (double servings pictured for the two of us) along with that day's menu. Our favs were the Croquetes and the Bifana Porcalhona as well as the Almôndegas de Pézinhos! She also loved the liver. Service was impeccable as the host brought each course at a perfectly casual pace (as we finished the previous) and provided careful details and answered further questions about each offering. Nearly 2 hours later we were done... and all the wiser for what could be created from any part of this animal.

I greatly appreciated the owner's passion too, going so far as to basically force me to order a non-standard cut of pork to encourage the mission and then making a special lactose-free version to accomodate my increasingly upsetting dairy sensitivity. This significantly improved my experience as the tongue was expertly cooked and they had the opportunity to show that off. (Bread and Butter: A) - This is one of those rare moments where I was actually excited about the cover since their butter is a pork- based butter without any actual butter and more likely some component of fat and marrow which added an intriguing decadence and uniqueness to the bread. The pickled carrots offered a pleasant refreshingness to open the palette as well. (Chorizo Pancake: A) - Soft and tender pancake with great elements of expertise keeping the hearty intensity of the chorizo while lightening it up with herbs, pickled onion, mayo, and a fluffy egg base. (Pig Tongue: A) - Super impressed with this dish from the soft pig tongue to the impressively tender pickled cauliflower that added a vbeautifully refreshing acidity. The diced potatoes added texture and heartiness, and I appreciated that this was thoughfully restrained. We were disappointed at the time but we found many other restaurants that had good seafood as well. We were traveling with other family members this time and thought this restaurant would be the best places to try pretty much every seafood dishes available in Lisbon and some of the unique foods that we can't get at home. We had barnacles, glass shrimp (it is supposed to have eggs outside the shell but unfortunately we were told the season was over so there were no eggs), spider crab, oysters with caviar, scallops, razor clams, and cheese with bread. My daughter's boyfriend tasted the barnacles for the first time and he loved it. We ended up ordering it twice. Everything was delicious. Everyone enjoyed the food. Excellent service.

We also wanted an authentic Portuguese place and not anything touristy. Be careful what you wish for! We took a number but were almost bypassed as they were calling higher numbers. I got the "matre d's" attention and showed him my number. He spoke no English as could be expected - not an issue! So, he bumped us up to the front of the line. We climbed a long narrow and steep staircase to reach a long narrow hallway with about 20 staff running about and squeezing by each other. Somehow, we found the dining room and our waiter greeted us offering us a choice of tables. Clientele were very well dressed and spoke in Portuguese looking very comfortable. He immediately brought us a huge basket of garlic bread! It was quite a nice atmosphere and reminiscent of an older home with high ceilings. We had trouble ordering from the phone app (as it should be because it was in Portuguese only) so our waiter guided us. No IPA and no wine except moscatel. But this was a cerveseria with no IPA! So we tried two glasses of moscatel- not our favorite as it was much too sweet. We agreed to the garlic shrimp and lazy crab. I asked what it came with and he said nothing and pointed to the garlic bread. I asked about ordering veggies and he said there were none! The crab was fridge cold but would have been better warm. The shrimp could have been tasty if not so salty. It wouldn't have been such a culture shock but it was also very pricey for what is was. I don't regret this experience as I was immersed in Portuguese culture and food. But no veggies is unthinkable! lol
