Everything is so well-organized and stocked adequately. They have a variety of goods from fresh produce to seafood to baked goods to household items to snacks. They focus more on Chinese specialty goods, but they have varieties of different cultural Asian goods, as well. If you want lamb or beef meat for hot pot, this is the best place to go. The lamb is so soft and not gamey, and it is also very reasonable priced for the amount you get. One whole box is quite dense and can last for multiple homemade hotpot/shabu sessions! I just really love how everything is so organized and clean. Their bakery also has some good stuff. My favorite is their bolo pork bun. The outside is sweet with a sweet custard crust top. It is essentially a pineapple bun filled with pork filling. I can literally eat five of them in a row. Last time we came, we cleared out all their pineapple pork buns! I also really like their produce. They have so many different produce, and it is fresh and reasonable priced. Their seafood area is also pretty well-kept and clean in a separate area. Welcome Food Center has become one of my go-to markets for hotpot meat, produce, and fresh seafood. They are very well-kept and have a lot of options!

When I started my associates degree I would come here too since Houston Community College is right across the street from it. I am happy to see that this small grocery store is still standing. Although this grocery store is small, it carries a variety of products. It has poke bowls, rice bowls, sushi, and bento boxes for you in case you do not have time to prepare a meal. Nippon Daido also carries a large variety of beverages that are very known in Japan. They also carry different kinds of beer from Japan and sake as well. Everyone is obsessed with matcha right now and I saw they had a different variety of matcha. I myself am a fan of tea. Theu even have different kinds of tea that I hope to try all of them one day. If you are not a fan of tea, I also noticed they had different kinds of coffee. This grocery store also carries a good variety of Japanese candy. We have all seen and heard about the different kinds of KitKat, well, this place carries them. I ended up buying the milk tea KitKat and it a nice delight of a flavor. I noticed that this place carries stuff to do hot pot and barbeque items in the frozen section. Japanese ice cream is carried too like taiyaki vanilla ice cream and red bean ice cream. I myself am a big fan of Kirby and noticed they had a Kirby cup. As much as I wanted to buy it, I had to pass up on it today since I own too many Kirby items. They also carried some Sanrio items but a lot of kitchenware without any design. What I like about this grocery store is the fact they had origami paper and Japanese notebook if you wanted to practice writing in hiragana or katakana. I used to buy those notebooks when I was practicing learning how to write and understand Japanese. In the same section they had very adorable toothpicks to make your own bento box. Something new I saw was that this grocery store has its own little sweet shop called Sweets Oyatsu. I tried the strawberry matcha latte and from I am seeing their famously own strawberry mochi. When I tell you the strawberry mochi is to die for! It has a very sweet flavor coming from the strawberry itself with a hint of sweet red bean. The chewiness of the mochi made the experience even better. The strawberry matcha latte was pretty good. You could really taste the sweetness of the strawberry and the slight bitterness of the matcha. I grew up in Alief my whole life. Nippon Daido is a hidden gem that Alief has in Houston. This small grocery store really brings the Japanese culture closer to home. I always like supporting small local businesses and as much as I do not visit this area anymore. The employees are helpful, and the store itself is clean. Something to be aware of, the line to checkout can be very long and hectic. Especially on weekends and during peak hours. He makes the best kare kare. But you can't beat home cooking. Too bad my FIL is in CA. The liempo was good, but how can you really mess up grilled pork belly? However, I did like Sizzle. The tortilla maker always waved at me as I watched at the tortillas flying off the conveyor belt. He quickly wrapped a pound of toasty tortillas and handed it to me. It reminded me Dynasty Supermarket before it closed. They both have resemblance from late 90's look and feel, just like the rest of this strip mall. I couldn't shop here because about 90% of packaging were in Vietnamese. It would take me days to translate with Google Translator app on things I might want. Couple of aisles were stacked with boxes. I considered myself skinny. But I couldn't even squeeze through them without knocking things off the shelves. That's a safety hazard. One corner of store has stacks of rice from Thailand, namely Jasmine rice. Lots of them in 25 lb sacks piled in the middle and smaller packages on the shelves. They seem to be fresher than Viet Hoa Supermarket. Another bad thing about doing here is the prices are marked. It could create a communication problem with cashier. I would come back if I can find someone speak same language to help me to translate.

This store took over part of the old Viet Hoa, which was in the innermost corner of the shopping center. When my family moved to Houston in the early 90's, I remember frequenting the old Viet Hoa on the weekends. With time, things evolved and Viet Hoa became one of the Asian grocery store powerhouses in its current location on Beechnut and Beltway 8. With Chinatown's busy weekend traffic, it's convenient to have a few smaller Asian stores like Tien Hung as alternatives for ingredients or supplies. Obviously don't let the run-down store or presence of peddlers turn you away, but always be cautious of your surroundings. Do as I do, quickly get in, grab what you need, and go! The storefront is not the cleanest nor most well-maintained, but they do offer a limited selection of seafood, meats, and produce. Occasionally, my mom comes here for Asian herbs and pho bones and meats to save time. Should you need ground pork from certain cuts or sliced meat, you can request those services from the butcher. Sometimes, the shrimp in the seafood section is even cheaper than Viet Hoa or Hong Kong. My favorite items to get are the homemade pork and shrimp wontons, which are made in-house daily. The wontons are located in the refrigerated section in the back of the store. For $6.50, you get a reusable 14 oz package of 32 wontons. Since I buy them in bulk and have to transport them 5-6 hours in the car, I freeze them as soon as I get home. Before eating the wontons, I let them defrost in the refrigerator for use the next day. These wontons are the perfect addition to make your own wonton soup with egg noodles, veggies, chicken broth, and whatever other ingredients you prefer. Everyone that has tasted these wontons loves them, especially during those cold winter nights. Another favorite of mine is the 25lb bag of Con Nai Bao Bo(deer) jasmine rice. I have purchased about 3 bags already because of how fragrant it is when cooking. Compared to other brands, this jasmine rice is more soft and moist, with a subtle sweetness. It's more expensive than other brands at $27.50, but definitely give this brand of jasmine rice a try if you're wanting a better flavor/texture profile. At the front checkout counter, there are a small selection of homemade Vietnamese goodies like: sesame balls, banh bong lan (sponge cake), and shredded pork & pork skin (bi). I haven't tried any of the baked sweets here since Parisian Bakery is right next door, but I have tried the tasty shredded pork & pork skin (bi), which is sold by the pound. You can use the "bi" as a spring roll ingredient, on toasted French bread, or to be eaten with rice or broken rice dishes. Don't expect friendly service and the cashier lady often tries to ask you to buy more homemade goodies. Like I said earlier, grab only what you need and be on your way. Consider Tien Hung as your local Asian convenience store. I frequently stop by when my mom needs a few ingredients for dinner to avoid the hassles of parking and traffic at Viet Hoa or Hong Kong. And you can always grab fresh French bread, pate chaud and sweet goodies next door at Parisian Bakery too. Less hassles and getting sweet treats afterwards = winning!
