I walked inside here on a whim and I never really realized how big this supermarket is. Quite a vast selection of products... I especially was impressed by their instant ramen selection and their seafood section. The size of some of their seafood was crazy. The prices here are actually pretty good. It's a shame it's located in such a busy plaza as that's the main deterrent from me shopping here.

Overall, this store was impressive. I really liked the organization and scope. Their were great snack options that I hadn't seen before and everything was easy to find. Walking around was also a lot of fun, as the store is very spacious and open. I loved seeing the different areas and options. There was a slight pricing snafu with some of the individually packaged sample items, but the employees resolved that. I ended the day with some interesting and tasty snacks!

I don't shop here often, but the store can sometimes have great prices on items you least expected. The service is pretty standard for an asian grocery store. The store is not as clean as some American ones, but it has a few great selection so can't be hardcore complaining. Be aware of certain items as it could be passed the best by date.

Underrated Asian grocery store. Very competitive prices. Lots of fresh Asian fruits and vegetables. Extensive seafood section with things like live eel, frogs and turtles. Definitely not for the uninitiated. They also have a large selection of unique Asian snacks and candies. Parking is tricky since it's in a busy shopping center shared with many other popular restaurants.

Located in Dun Huang plaza with the center of all hipster restaurants being located within one square mile. We came here to walk off dinner that we had in the plaza and it was actually a lot better than I remembered (empty and desolate ghost town inside the market previously). Not the greatest Chinese grocery store in Chinatown but you do avoid having to park again (it's a pain) at another plaza. Customer service is pretty meh and the meat and seafood options look sus. It's actually pretty clean inside but I attribute that to low foot traffic. Overall, it's alright. Nothing great but it'll have your staples without you having to re-park your car at another plaza and deal with Bellaire drivers with low IQ.

I'm willing to bet that a majority of the people who shop at Great Wall (#1) are here because they're also at Dun Huang Plaza (#2). They have a decent amount of inventory, but between the so-so prices, and poor customer service, I don't foresee Great Wall being destination grocery shopping compared to its import grocery counterparts. Location is the real winner here, as is the convenience of not having to bounce around the neighborhood. The produce is solid. They have a good array of fresh seafood, a number of common vegetables / fruits, and all the usual suspects for their imports. That second floor where they have specialty kitchenware items, such as their stools, chopstick collections, and cool dining sets are pretty awesome. During the Lunar New Year, they tend to go all out with the decorations and bring in a number of fun holiday themed specialty snacks for gifting. They also sell said decorations so that folks can take the festivities home. I think the prices are a little higher than most of the other supermarkets I tend to shop at and I can definitely note the less-than-enthusiastic workers here who aren't great at helping folks find what they need. My pro tip is having an image of the item you'd like on your phone ready for them to help them locate your item. Parking can be a challenge during the weekends but it's usually a lot more calm during the week. Calling ahead of time is a gamble, even for Chinese-speakers. __________ (#1) Myself included (#2) Oh, only the most intense plaza in this Chinese part of Bellaire Blvd: https://www.yelp.com/biz/dun-huang-plaza-%E6%95%A6%E7%85%8C%E5%BB%A3%E5%A0%B4-houston

It's more of an average wall, but this cat is pretty great.

Not to be confused with the nearby vineyard (Grape Wall) or Barbi's movie expertise (Gape Wall). It was never my favourite grocery store to be honest, but it's cool that it's right here in Dun Huang Plaza, because even though it's a little run-down and the shelves can be a little bare, and it doesn't have much on the fancier stores across the street, what it does have is some grocery store items when you need them in a pinch, and that's why we appreciate it so much. I added a star for it having so many unusual items and being so close to all the top boba shops.

I love shopping at this supermarket but I do have mixed feelings. I normally go because they have a wide variety of spices but I have noticed birds in the market and when it just opened I did question the authenticity of some of the snacks. However, it seemed to improve and now there is a great variety! Language Used: English, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cantonese Snacks: 5 Great Wall has started carrying a lot of the popular desserts and snacks at lower prices ($2-3) compared to other supermarket. Ex. Boba popsicles and Japanese Kit Kat's. They also have a great variety of flavor! For example they have seaweed flavored lays chips and steak flavored Cheetos. Vegetables: 4 Besides snacks I normally go to Great Wall for the vegetables since there is a great variety and they are normally fresh! However, I normally don't get it green onions from here since it is a bit more expensive Fruit: 3-3.5 While the variety of fruit is greater then the supermarket across the road it's pretty average compared to most of the grocery stores in Chinatown. I normally do not buy fruits from here because they don't look as fresh as the ones from HEB. Service: 3.5-4 It's what you expect from Chinatown. One day you could have a nice Aunty or Sister. The next day you could have someone rude.

Tons of Asian food options, fresh seafood, live seafood, live frogs, live eel, redfish head, salmon head, snails, and more! They have plenty of imported drinks, dried foods, canned and jarred sauces, even the regular American meat cuts, ribs, etc. American beer, Japanese beer, etc. but I didn't see any Chinese beer. Plenty of wines to select from as well. It's a very large, spacious grocery store and they have plenty of fresh produce to choose from too.

Lots of Asian markets on Hillcroft. I would say this is a top one. Great sea food. Produce is top notch. Employees are willing to help out. Only if asked though. Hard to navigate through store. Parking is a mess. This is my Asian market to go to. They have everything you would need. Study Chinese though! You'll need it!

I want to dedicate my 700th review to Great Wall Supermarket 大中華超級市場. I just can't contain the excitement of a well-organized Asian supermarket chain comes to Houston Chinatown. I have been waiting since last September to replace Dun Huang Supermarket. GW opened on 12/12/16. The company that owns Great Wall Supermarket established over a decade ago in NYC. Houston is the first store opened west of Mississippi River. If this doesn't excite you, come here and look for yourself. As a long-time Chinatown resident, I've never seen a turnaround business successfully changed the perspective of this huge supermarket footprint. They transformed every inch of this store into useful space. Who needs food vendors inside the supermarket? There are dozens of restaurants to grab a bite in the mall. They effectively placed produce department at the section where other operators used for concession stands. As you walk in, you'll see the fresh vegetables and fruits stare at you. It is the highlight of the Great Wall Supermarket. There are so many imported fruits and vegetables from China and Taiwan. They're priced reasonably. The section below household level is being used as traditional Chinese medicine 中药 and other canned goods. Dun Huang Supermarket used this area for vegetables before, which I didn't like. The seafood department is very clean (at least for now being new) and meat department has lots of great looking pork, beef and chicken (and other things in the buckets). I just wish the bilingual meat clerks speak an Asian language. **1st review of 2017**

A lot of variety of produce !
    Lola R.

While in Chinatown I stopped at this Asian supermarket. As soon as you walk in the smell of fish hits you and its very pungent. (it was a bit of a turn off) but you get used to it once you spend some time inside. They have the Produce to the left as you enter which is a very good spot. The vegetable were fresh and they carry a variety that you could only get if you to any place in Asia. I love durian so I was pleased to see that they carry it. I love Vietnamese coffee and I was able to find it here, it was $6.79 (but I looove viet coffee) so I had to get it. I usually go to the other place across the street to get my Cafe Du Monde but they had a great sale at $3.99 a can so I stocked up. This is a regular Asian store definetly would visit but they should work on the pungent fish smell.

    Frozen dumplings.
    Thomas S.

Mrs wanted some frozen dumplings to make veggie/dumplings soup due to cold weather. I was in the area, so I stopped by this Asian grocery. The store was clean and bright. Huge selections of Asian goods at competitive pricing. I found what I came for easily. This grocery is a good option for Asian goods in Chinatown.

The seafood manager told us it would be over $60 and we said that was fine. He picked one for us and handed it to a worker to clean/prep. While we were picking blue crabs nearby, we saw the worker struggling. My mom politely tried to explain how to clean it properly (she wasn't being rude -- she was trying to help because the worker looked lost). The worker responded with a nasty attitude, brushed her off, and kept ignoring her while chatting with a coworker. Then the worker handed us the bag and said, "Next time I'm not even going to clean it for you -- get out of here!" I've never had an employee speak to my family like that in a grocery store. We were so upset we didn't even take the bag and walked away to finish shopping. At checkout, the seafood manager came over with the same worker and asked why we left it. We explained what happened. Instead of apologizing or trying to resolve it, the manager got rude and accused us of leaving it because we can't afford it. That's not only unprofessional -- it's insulting, especially because we agreed to the price from the start and were prepared to pay. And to make things worse, while the worker was chatting with his coworker during the prep, I overheard him saying words like "chinos" and "pinches." I'm not fluent, but I know enough Spanish to recognize when someone is talking about customers in a disrespectful way. It's disturbing to hear that in a store where a lot of customers are Asian. This wasn't a "bad day" situation. It was outright hostility from an employee and a manager who escalated things instead of doing his job. We only took the turtle after demanding an apology, but the experience was already ruined. I won't be returning. If management cares, they need to retrain or replace staff in seafood -- because nobody should be spoken to like that while spending money in your store.

Lots of parking available during the week. Went two days later and still parking was available on the weekend. Happy Chinese New Year! I'll be back.
