I asked a friend to buy me red caviar at "Golden Grain", he brought it and I was shocked to say the least, I began to be surprised by the appearance, it looked like porridge, not caviar, when they opened the lid we saw dry caviar on the inside of the roof and the same porridge instead of caviar, I decided to try it and then I had to brush my teeth, the taste was terribly bitter, I decided to return the money or exchange the product, but the elderly woman was very rude, called me a liar and told me to feed my children this caviar and nothing would happen to them , before buying from this magazine, think carefully about whether you are ready to get a distraction for your own money and then listen to a lot of bad things addressed to you

The home made food and deserts were very good. I found a lot of yummy food in this store that reminded me of my childhood. The owner Svetlana is a very nice person, she was very friendly and showed me around.

Medovik cake made by the owner. Even better than the one I had in Mari Vanna.

Got caviar, blini, sausage and honey cake from this hidden gem owned by a lovely couple. Highly recommend!

To start this Russian grocery review off right on Tchaikovsky's birthday, pick your favorite music (I suggest Piano Concerto No. 1) from http://www.lala.com/#album/937030197557925316 You would never guess that tucked among the surrounding apartment complexes near Belden's is this gem of a store run by Svetlana and Robert, who are very helpful, even to non-Russians looking for something different to eat. I heard from a good authority that this is the best Russian grocery in town, but this is the only one in which I have bought food. I understand that she makes the pastries and cakes and prepares some of the packaged meal items. There are many prepared meats to choose from, and some unique cheeses. Candies are unusual Russian ones. I bought the layered pastry & cream dessert, since she said it was the most popular. It indeed is quite good, especially with a good cuppa. If you like herring, like I do, they have a few varieties of preparations here (smoked, pickled, etc.). Now I know where to get the Russian-style blinnies, too.

Just brought a little piece of Russia home yum

The whole city smells different, LNG, cheap gasoline, good cooking, wet streets, ice cold wind. Entering The General store is a little bit of the whole experience, especially when it's already cold outside. The people are real nice, only a few actually speak English fluently but are giving their best to suit us costumer needs. You get specialities not only from Russia but from a lot of countries of the former Sowjet Union. Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Siberia, you name it. Why would you want to visit? They have - the best honey you can buy in Houston. Honey from bees so far away from any industrial, even civilizational influence. So far inside the wide forests of Bashkiria. A real delicacy. - a dozen different types of herring, salted, fermented, fresh, pickled and so on. A must for a perfect herring salad or the Russian 'fish in fur'. - original Pelmeni (like Ravioli) stuffed with everything you can think of. - home made tarts and cakes like your grandma would have made then. - wine and beer from all over the place. My favorite is Baltica, a smooth and very fresh lager. - dozens of different sausages (yes, they have doctor's, too) and a wide variety of cheeses. - home made salads for any occasion. And... They have a bookstore and a pharmacy. And the latter is as unconventional as it is affordable. The only caveat is that you simply need to know what you need before you ask for it. They are no doctors or nurses. But you get everything. Yes, even OTC cyalis. They're open 364 days a year but i forgot which holiday they honor. So your chance is 364 out of 365, which is not bad. The General Store is a small gem in Meyerland. Worth a visit.

This is no frills steam table/cafeteria style Vietnamese on the back of probably the largest Vietnamese grocery store in Houston and it is great. I had this beef stew that you would otherwise only find at someone's grandma's house that was killer. Got some turnip cake on the side but everything looked good. This market is one for the largest Vietnamese markets I've ever been to, offering a wide variety of fresh fruits, frozen foods, dry goods, imported sauces, sweets and more. I particularly love their extensive rice paper selections. My favorite is the "no water" rice paper, which doesn't require dipping in water to roll up like traditional ones. Unfortunately, this type of rice paper is available at every asian market so I'm happy Tan Binh has them. They also have a nice section dedicated to ready-to-eat and hot foods. You can grab and go with options like fried fish, tofu, and cooked meats. Customer service is usually pretty friendly. Just like anywhere else, you should check the expiration date of every product before buying. My cousin forgot to do so and bought two boxes of solar dried bananas that were expired. And during the warmer seasons, they set up a nice plant and herb section for sale right outside the entrance.

The location is checked out ok. Comparing those 2, I like this one better. But not the best one in Asiatown. I wouldn't want to drive all this way for something. I normally hit up Viet Hoa Supermarket on the other side of Beltway. The store is clean enough. Aisles are not always clear. Stuff was all over the floor and blocking the aisles. The shopping carts were all over the parking lot. It's not about what the business did but the customers left the charts wherever they want. I just wish there is a collection point. The seafood manager told us it would be over $60 and we said that was fine. He picked one for us and handed it to a worker to clean/prep. While we were picking blue crabs nearby, we saw the worker struggling. My mom politely tried to explain how to clean it properly (she wasn't being rude -- she was trying to help because the worker looked lost). The worker responded with a nasty attitude, brushed her off, and kept ignoring her while chatting with a coworker. Then the worker handed us the bag and said, "Next time I'm not even going to clean it for you -- get out of here!" I've never had an employee speak to my family like that in a grocery store. We were so upset we didn't even take the bag and walked away to finish shopping. At checkout, the seafood manager came over with the same worker and asked why we left it. We explained what happened. Instead of apologizing or trying to resolve it, the manager got rude and accused us of leaving it because we can't afford it. That's not only unprofessional -- it's insulting, especially because we agreed to the price from the start and were prepared to pay. And to make things worse, while the worker was chatting with his coworker during the prep, I overheard him saying words like "chinos" and "pinches." I'm not fluent, but I know enough Spanish to recognize when someone is talking about customers in a disrespectful way. It's disturbing to hear that in a store where a lot of customers are Asian. This wasn't a "bad day" situation. It was outright hostility from an employee and a manager who escalated things instead of doing his job. We only took the turtle after demanding an apology, but the experience was already ruined. I won't be returning. If management cares, they need to retrain or replace staff in seafood -- because nobody should be spoken to like that while spending money in your store.
