Fieldwork is great in terms of their beers and ambiance, but I would avoid at crowded times like weekend evenings. We went on a Saturday for dinner and it took us half an hour from being seated to have someone come and take our order. The food that they are serving during covid is good but it's a small selection. Their online menu has a food and beer list but oftentimes something is sold out, but the servers gave good alternatives, which was really helpful. Overall I think the staff are trying their best during covid, but it was really understaffed for the setup that they have. You are limited to two hours there, and for us, that meant we hit the whole time and only had two beers each because the staff were so overwhelmed. Beers overall were really great and they had some interesting flavor profiles. read more

I used to love this place, but EVERY TIME I come here it gets worse. It took someone 20/25 mins to even come take a drink order and now another 20 mins (and counting) to get my beer. So, I wouldn't suggest coming unless you have allllllll the time in the world to wait. read more

So the beer here is not very exciting, but my real beef is with their QR code ordering system. I know it's not their system but they use it. The problem is literally every time you want to order one beer you have to re-enter all of your information including your credit card. Even if you create an account it doesn't let you save a credit card. How stupid is that? Again aside from their beer not being very exciting, that is a significant incentive to go somewhere else. read more

fieldwork brewery definitely takes the cake for decor and ambience. i would have to say that i took notice of their fancy outdoor set up and the fun heaters they had for cold nights. not only did they look nice, they felt great! i had a good time lounging outdoors on a chilly night while sipping om my beer. while i thought majority of the beers i tried tasted just ok, i really, really liked their raspberry parfait. it tasted just perfect! my friends and i each ordered a flight, and really liked how their flights allowed up to 6 beers, which is a little more than what i typically see at breweries. great experience! read more

Most importantly beer is, at best ok. Not terrible, but very ok. Team does not appear to know the beers, what is good, differences. They just direct you to a QR code. Little lame when compared to close by alternatives. read more

My first reaction when I saw a sour beer with possible Lactose... whaatt!! But when I sipped, it tasted great. also visited their other location in Monterey.. Like the San Mateo one better. will again read more

Start with the Farmhouse Rancher if the temp is 74-84 degrees outside--bright, subtle citrus, effervescent, farm flare. Followed by the Petite Verdot Gose (half pour), then the Shelter Rat Pale Ale to make you rethink pales. Oh, and a shout out to Ryan (GM) for hitting the floor, making appearances, and saying howdy. Great service. 7 different people hit us up from taking a beer order within 1 minute, clearing glassware and asking for next beer within 2 minutes. And just smiling and walking by time and time again. Don't know about the food, but hey, liquid lunch is awesome. They do beer flights too! read more

Pretty cool vibe at this little Beer Garden. Garden being the operative word, as it was great to be outside enjoying a frosty beverage on a clear and semi-warm winter day here in San Mateo. read more

Nice place to grab drinks with family or friends. Very hip and stylish place. Their unique beer and cocktails list is also great.

I've been coming here a lot ever since they first opened. I even held my bday year in 2017. Great location and environment that is great for families and dog owners. The beer are rotated regularly and are delicious. Their food is great and you can even bring outside food in. I would have given it 5 stars but I feel like they are still figuring out their service. Sometimes it may take awhile to order a beer depending on the number of servers. read more

This place is fabulous. The service and atmosphere are great, but my husband prefers Fieldwork beer over anything else he's tasted. He's always buying gift cards for people in order to spread the word. We also like to visit various locations, but enjoy having the San Ramon location in town! read more

Good beers, a nice out door patio, ability to order ROAM burgers right from the patio, solid service, kid friendly enclosure, and dog friendly dirt area means a great experience. read more

Love the beer, great the atmosphere andDog friendly! Also you can order Roam burger if you're hungry

An outdoor bar made out of shipping containers in an office park courtyard should not have been this cool but it worked! Had a bunch of great beers, real cool staff who gave good suggestions and engaged, and we got to sit outside on a nice night. Definitely worth a visit read more

Interesting Brewery. I'm not a big beer fan but they had wine options and the sours (especially the Blackberry) were sweet enough for even a non-beer person like myself. Lots of heaters too but this place gets quite crowded so you may be outside of the heated area. read more

Really great experience here. Beautiful outdoor space, and I got service about 30 seconds after I sat down. And of course the beer is great.

Awesome low key beer garden to try some brews. Great variety and not too pricey. Go with the sampler and try everything until you find what you like. It's hard to commit to one beer before having a sampling. Delicious grilled cheese sandwiches but quite pricey. Chili lime corn nuts didn't have much chili or lime, but corn nuts go so well with beer. Service was helpful and took the time to explain their offerings. They have some small game courts on the side if you're so inclined. Overall great place to hang out with friends and throw a few back. read more

Love coming here !! It's a great ambience, the seating arrangement is great, and their beers are good for the most part ! It's located in between some business buildings, so sometimes it does get a little windy. I always like to sit at the tables near the entrance because they are warmer and have a better vibe. There are also tables located farther back but do not have any space heaters or lights. For the most part the beers are pretty good. Sometimes when their rotations are low I'm not super satisfied , but at the moment there's lots of great ones to try. Due to COVID and regulations in San Mateo County you must order food. The only things on the food menu include a couple sandwiches and waffles. Their food is probably their downside, and I hate having to buy it because it's over 10 dollars and I never eat it. Other than that, I love to sit by the fire place and it's a great place to bring your dog and enjoy a brew with friends or family . read more

What a CUTEEEEE place. It's outdoor, has heat lamps, great rotating selection of beer. You can do flights as well, which is what I did so I could taste between 5 different beers. They actually serve you, which I thought was a nice touch, instead of having to go up and order repetitively. There were some food options- but more snack than a dinner. It is a little overpriced as far as the food- but the drinks were very delicious and reasonably priced. The parking can get congested, but it is much better than being in downtown san mateo. There is street parking all around the street. The kegs tap out, but they replace them with a new beer so keep tabs on that in case there is a popular beer there that you like! read more

First of all, this Fieldwork is in the weirdest location down a street devoid of any character, among a bunch of new tech buildings. The fieldwork "buildings" are made from shipping containers and most of the brewery is an outdoor beer garden. On the bright side, the temperature is fine, even at night, since the walls of the beer garden keep out most of the wind. The heat lamps are a bit overkill (I felt like I was roasting) but you can ask a server to turn them off for you - if you can manage to flag one down. There are limited food options here that are all overpriced and sometimes out of stock, including $9 tamales, $5 chips and $8-10 grilled cheeses. My co-worker tried to order tamales and was told there was only a single chicken tamale left. By the way, there is not a single restaurant serving real food around, just coffee and ice cream, so don't come here hungry. However, you can bring your own food in, so I would recommend getting food elsewhere or getting food delivered to the beer garden. The service here is a bit lacking. I asked for a recommendation of what beer to get and the server suggested the Juicy Mane, so I ordered that. The server then came back 5 minutes later to tell me they were out of the beer he had just recommended to me. I also had to wait around for quite a while to get my second beer. One server picked up my empty glass but didn't even ask if I wanted a new drink. It took ~15 minutes of active searching to flag down the server and he told me he would be with us in just a minute. I then waited about 5 more minutes and managed to put in my order with a different server. Then the server dropped off my beer on the wrong side of the table, so I didn't realize it had been delivered for another 5 minutes. Honestly, this service problem could be easily fixed by just allowing ordering at the counter. Okay, now for the good part: the beers. There are so many beers on tap here that it was hard to chose what to get. I had two hazy IPAs: Synchronize Swatches and Kush-Pop. Both were very hoppy and juicy and reminded me of Treehouse beers in Massachusetts. I also tried a bit of the Mocha Choco Latte (a porter), which was actually much better than I expected. The chocolate/coffee flavor was very rich without being overpowering. I really like Fieldwork beer, but I probably won't come back to this location due to the poor service and lack of food options. If this was a lesser brewery, I would be giving this place 1-2 stars, but if you cannot make it out to the Berkeley location, I would recommend coming here for the large selection of Fieldwork beers. read more

If I yelped this place a few weeks ago I would have given it a 5 but they recently changed to only table service and if anyone's listening that is a terrible idea. I watched this poor couple sitting next to us wait for 20 minutes to get their first beer. Finally she got up went to the counter and grabbed her beers herself!! They had been sitting there for so long!! The ease of counter service made this place comfortable and down to earth it should go back to that. Anyway, beer is super tasty and obviously will be back again and again regardless. So happy for the edition to San Mateo Edit: just wasted 25 minutes for a Togo growler. Me along with ten other poor people. read more

I love this place. The staff is friendly and very helpful. They answer all questions you have and even recommend certain beers to your liking. My favorite food here is the grilled cheese sandwich!! read more

I love fieldwork brews, and their hazy IPAs are the best. A perfect way to relax in a beautiful open beer garden space. We were happy to see that this location serves a simple bar menu and so we enjoyed and IPA, a grilled cheese and great atmosphere even though it was a rainy day. The Monterey location is also awesome :) read more

Great atmosphere for enjoying a lazy summer day with a great selection of beers and tons of cute dogs too! Make sure you try what you want and def get a growler if available! I went back for seconds and they were out of what I wanted for the season read more

The beers were amazing. The service was great. The atmosphere was so cute. What else could you want in a brewery? Definitely visiting every time that I'm in the area! read more

Hostile service, particularly unfriendly to families with children. Food was terrible and the waitress wouldn't allow our seven year old son to eat a snack we brought for him, because of their strict policy against bringing in any food from outside. Stay away, this place is awful. read more

Update 8/10/2019 I've been back to this place several times since my original review without incident until tonight. I'll start off by saying the beer is still excellent and the fact you can order burgers from a near by spot is great. I'd give this place 5 stars based on that, but what brings it down is the service we recieved. The server was a rude a**hole. I wish I knew his name, but he was a short and slightly stocky dude who wore his sunglasses even tho the sun had gone down. Complete douche. He made it seem like our order was a complete inconvenience to him. Giving us attitude to the point where I called him out on it. Well as long as that jerkoff is employed I will not be returning, just does damage to your business. read more

Wow, love this place! Bocce ball was super fun here, and we got a taster of every single one of their beers. Their double IPAs are deliciously dangerous. We came here on a beautiful day (when is it not?) and had a great time! read more

Fieldwork - Beer Bar Near Me - San Mateo, California

GreAt customer service and location but I was really disappointed with Fieldwork Brewery's beer! We went on one of the hottest weekends and none of the beers in our beer flight was cold. Warm beer was just unappetizing and made the warm outdoors warmer. Cool outdoor games tho and great for groups. Just keep them beers cold guys!! I can pretty much drink any beer out there and enjoy it if it's served cold. Thanks! read more

Came here on a Thursday night to meet up with a friend. This is definitely a "beer garden" with a sizable selection of beers on tap and some light bites. I really enjoyed the string light lit open air area. Would be a good setting for a date. There's a covered area, which we took advantage of because it rained. There were also heaters all around which I appreciated. The service was so quick. They incorporate iPads so we can pay immediately when seated somewhere. Our drinks showed up like 30 seconds after we paid. The staff was really nice and patient. The night we were there, there was an inebriated patron that was harassing women (and us). The staff were very attentive and diplomatic about managing him, which I really appreciated. read more

First time here and I did a beer flight of lighter beers on the menu. Favorite beer of my flight was the Raspberry Parfait. Nice vibe! Great atmosphere! Service could use some improvement. Definitely will be back to fill up my growler! read more

-nice and clean outdoor set up -Huge selection on IPAs -Few options for food -waited 20 minutes for tortilla chips read more

Misleading and not you think. Expecting the 3rd party food to take over an hour to be served.

Update your hours on yelp please. And maybe acknowledge customers patiently waiting to be seated instead of avoiding eye-contact for 20 minutes. read more

Don't sit in the back by the Bocce/dirt area. I waited for an hour and no one ever came back to take my next order. I gave up. I had to walk to the main area and accost a server to close my tab. The other locations handle busy crowds well. This is probably due to the fact that the other locations (I have visited them all, including the new San Ramon location) offer a line based system (as well as a waitstaff/server based system). read more

Being as this place is so close to home, I am glad i can take UBER there. Its literally five minutes away from my home. I came to this location a few weeks after it opened. The beer is pretty good, but they keep running out of some fan favorites apparently. On the plus side they let you bring in your own food on top of them seriving some small bites. Their food looks somewhat decent but don't expect to get full off it. The beer is good and reasonably priced. I'll defintiely be back to try the other beer. great place for friends, seating can be challenging when its busy. And like other reviews before me. not a big fan of the children being in this place either. I like to enjoy my beer and be myself, not worrying about a child near me. The staff are pretty friendly and it seems they have hired more people to accomodate the crowds or when its busy for them. Give it a try! read more
