A Case of Instagram vs. Reality I booked Field & Stream Hotel for the last night of our honeymoon, looking forward to the advertised 4-star experience after a week in a camper van. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The hotel's Instagram claims it's "just steps from 3 legendary rivers" and a "short drive to Yellowstone." In reality, it's right off the highway, across from Walmart, with no rivers in sight. Yellowstone is a full two hours away--hardly a "short drive." To me, this felt like false advertising. While the hotel is newly opened, it's still under construction. The website shows a pool and a beautiful courtyard, but the pool isn't finished (which they do note online--still, the pictures should come down until it's ready). Part of the courtyard was also a construction zone. One side looked nice with large vintage Field & Stream murals and queen-sized lounge chairs, but the other three walls looked like my old high school courtyard. My suggestion: carry those murals around the entire space. The courtyard did look more inviting at night with lanterns and corner fireplaces. For a place marketed as a "starting point for adventure," I was surprised to find the lobby coffee unavailable until 7:00 a.m.--especially when we came down at 6:30 a.m. ready to head out. We ended up grabbing coffee at the Best Western next door, which, by the way, does have an airport shuttle (Field & Stream does not). The "4-star" room was small, with a queen bed. While the rustic décor and paint job helped, it still felt like a dressed-up Days Inn. The metal doors were simply painted over, the room was dark even with lights and windows open, and the bathroom was tiny. Another downside: the 4:00 p.m. check-in. If you have dinner plans downtown, it doesn't leave much time to settle in. They do offer early check-in, but when we arrived, several housekeepers had called out, so our room wasn't ready. The good: The hotel was generally clean (though there was dust on top of the headboard), the bed and pillows were comfortable, and the staff was friendly. The bartender was great, and we enjoyed the salmon dip at the bar. The gym was a pleasant surprise--equipped with a cable machine, dumbbells, a rower, a treadmill, and an elliptical. The staff was kind enough to let us use it while we were waiting for our room. Overall, the hotel has potential, but right now, it's not a true 4-star experience. A few key improvements--accurate marketing, finishing construction, and elevating the guest experience--would make a big difference. For now, if I return to the area, I'd probably choose the Best Western next door.

While I don't expect the staff was likely used to groups of 13 girls coming to visit for a bachelorette, the welcomed us warmly, and took amazing care of us. Chef Chris kept us extremely well fed, and the rest of the staff whipped up incredible Margaritas, and shuttled us to a wide variety of activities including tubing on the local river, skeetshooting, flyfishing, and even hosted a pottery class. The house itself is gorgeous, so many bedrooms I've lost count, with several porches, comfortable couches to enjoy the view from, and even has a small gym. The house is extremely remote, off of a paved route, so if it's the perfect place to truly getaway. We constantly saw deer, rabbits, and wildbirds, and relaxed in the evenings in the hot tub, having a drink on the beautiful wrap-around porch, or taking walks along the road to watch the sunset. Great place for a family reunion, and for taking a break from city life. Would absolutely recommend staying here for the beautiful views, amazing staff, and top notch accommodations.

Without exaggeration, we were quite sad to leave. The accommodations are gorgeous and with 6,000 acres to roam (including horse, elk, and deer herds) there's quite a lot to do. GCR could charge more but they kindly don't; consider the near private venue and all-inclusive world class food, and it's a bargain. The food, while we're on it, was ridiculously good (go Rory). Nearby we went on several hikes and took advantage of Tracey's skeet shooting tutorial, and Kendra's patience, to round out a wonderful weekend. The staff of Rory, Chris, Kendra, Tracey, and Maureen made our trip. In short, book it now before others learn of this place. You'll be happy you did. Chris and Katie.

My wife and I just wrapped up our second stay with them for an adults only 5 night stay. The ranch is truly like nothing else we've experienced. At the beginning of your stay the head wrangler catches up with you and pairs you with 1 of their 130 horses that are wonderfully trained and cared for on site. The food is one of the major highlights for me and you will enjoy plated 3-4 course dinners each night, with several entrees to choose from at each meal. The cabins and amenities are great, but what really makes your stay special is the people, both the staff and guests, that you spend the week with. I can honestly say it is the best customer service experience I have had to-date, and that doesn't do it justice, because you leave there feeling like family. Things to consider: 1. The Guest Ranch appears pricey to some and we definitely agree that it's a considerable amount of money to spend on a 5 night vacation. That said, we left both years satisfied and without any regrets. 2. We have only visited in late September and early October near the end of their season. Both stays had at least 1 day of rainy weather. You can ride horse and do most activities even with rain, or just read and drink coffee next the a roaring fire, but weather and timing of the visit may be something to consider. 3. Alcohol is not included but the bar is very generous and has a great wine list. That said, we've brought special bottles of wine to the ranch to enjoy with dinner, without issues.

The first time was just to soak for the day, which was only about $15 for a day pass. It felt amazing on a cold snowy day. I came back recently to experience the winter getaway package while my friend was visiting. It includes a night stay in the lodge, dinner at the restaurant, access to the breakfast buffet and of course the soaking pools. It was such a relaxing weekend and a great value! The lodge is very rustic and cozy. The restaurant is very nice and feels more upscale. The food was incredible, but I would love to see more vegetarian/vegan options. There are some salads and a mushroom pasta, but it was very heavy on the dairy- delicious though! The bread before dinner was AMAZING and the staff were really on top of things. My favorite part about the restaurant was the breakfast buffet. I loved the pancakes and huge assortment of tasty breakfast food. I felt so pampered having such a wonderful breakfast and then soaking in the pools. I would highly recommend staying at Chico for a fun Montana staycation or vacation!

Bartenders, Austin, Jamie and Ethan were awesome. The female bartender working with Ethan and Jamie had been very rude and condescending - she gets zero stars! Hopefully that miserable bartender will have a better attitude...

WE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE PLEASED. Here's what we loved. (1.) We felt like we were really out in the wilderness, instead of a corporate thing disguised as glamping. (2.) The setting was jaw-droppingly beautiful. (3.) Our tent was comfortably and exquisitely outfitted. (4.) We had wonderful privacy and yet the staff was very available, pleasant and accommodating, and (5) The food was really delicious - not too fussy, just really good. The only thing I would suggest is that you request a graphic map with visual markers, mileage, etc., as we felt a little lost the entire time we were trying to get to the site. The staff was very nice in helping us via phone, but we would have arrived more relaxed if we'd been more confident in the route. We will definitely use The Yellowstone Collective Retreat again. Our tent was amazing - very well designed, a comfortable bed, and a beautiful short walk to get to it. Also the food here was great. There's a chef that cooks breakfast (included), and a four-course meal for dinner (extra). Both were excellent. Also as first-time visitors to Big Sky, MT, the staff was extremely helpful in getting us to the best restaurants and nature activities. Everyone working there was extremely nice. However, they seemed understaffed, which obviously isn't the workers fault - they were trying very hard to keep up with interacting with us and the other guests. For such a high-end place otherwise, with a high-end price, I think Collective Retreats should hire more workers.

There is simply nothing like it around. I was a solo traveler (33F) from NY never having been to MT or out west - reading reviews online I liked that the ranch didn't seem to be like a "mill" and looked like more of an individualized experience & boy was everyone right. I was immediately put at ease before I even booked when I called the ranch and Melissa spoke with me right away answering all of my questions - she is extremely knowledgeable, responsive & informative. Upon booking she sent a bunch of information for packing/activities/etc. - there were absolutely no surprises and I felt very prepared for the trip & of what to expect - if you miss something it's because you didn't read it carefully & that's on you! My cabin immediately felt like home - it was cozy, clean, and beautifully decorated. There is so much charm to the ranch. Every meal was better than the next. Melissa, Kurt, & the wranglers are the real deal - they know the country better than the back of their hand & I was so impressed by them all. Having never experienced this kind of country I quickly went from being apprehensive to eager to go out every day and explore simply because of how at ease the wranglers made me feel. Kurt & Melissa have a real talent for reading horses & people and paired everyone PERFECTLY with their horses for the week as well as the group I rode with. I have never seen better cared for/happier horses in all my years of riding - I don't even want to say my horse's name here (& I won't) because I selfishly want her for the next time I go but she was really just such a great horse. There are not enough words or space in this review to say how much I loved this ranch and how much I appreciated the kindness and warmth Melissa, Kurt, their 2 boys, the guests, animals, and the entire staff of the CWR showed me. This place will forever hold a special place in my heart & I look forward to coming back as many times as I can!!
