No off-street parking. Have to move your car every 2 hours until 5PM. Elevator needs staff to operate as it was built 120 years ago. Pet hair on the sofa in my room. I should have Yelped this place before booking. Mea culpa, they described the parking situation in their confirmation email. But the pet hair wasn't included. Got that for free. Shower in step-up bathroom is tiny, no room to turn without hitting walls. Toilet is like a child's potty chair-very low to the ground! I get that it's an historic inn. Just a little rustic for my taste as a senior traveler. Everyone on staff was very nice. They'd took care of the pet hair and were very accommodating about getting me to the 4th floor when I was tired after walking around Livingston, which is a cute town with great bars and restaurants (Shout-out Gil's Goods). read more

If you like places that are a bit creepy, but also whimsical and classic, this is the hotel for you! The Murray is usually well out of my price range (often exceeding $300-400/night in the summer), but I found a room with two beds in November for less than $200, so jumped at the chance to stay with them! Our room turned out to be a two bed suite that was obviously two rooms at one point in the past. There was a sitting room with a wet bar and a bedroom with two plush beds and a connecting bathroom. The beds were so comfy! The TV had a steaming device so we could log in with our Netflix account (and there were TVs in both the sitting room and the living room). Overall a lovely room and plenty of space to spread out. Be aware though, that the elevator in this hotel is as old as the building so it requires a staff operator. It's not the most accessible property. One note: The mini fridge in our room made lots of weird popping and clacking noises, so maybe this room was haunted? They have an elevator that is over 100 years old and is still working and you can use it with the assistance of an employee. Our room was so nice and beautifully decorated. I LOVE The Murray! I can guarantee that many people will be disappointed. When you check in, you will notice that they tell you that there is an active train station across the street and live music in the bar on weekends. If you can't handle actual mild night life, the other end of town, by the interstate has chain motels and restaurants. Eat your bad, all inclusive, generic breakfast and head to Yellowstone. The Murray is a real Wild West Hotel. Ask for a room or mini suite on the 3rd or 4th floor at the back. By staying at The Murray, you are in walking distance of a charming downtown, three museums and 60 minutes of Yellowstone. Anthony Bourdain said it was one of his 10 favorite hotels in the world. And if you haven't made your dinner reservations at Campione in Livingston, don't bother, but try to get a seat at the bar at 5pm read more

Had a lovely stay here on a Saturday night 06/05. We made our reservation 24 hours in advance and got lucky to get a "same day" discount of $100. We ended up only paying $195 including tax. What a deal!!! It's a risk though since we got the last room in the hotel. The hotel is historical and has a cool neon sign. They also have a staff operated old OTIS elevator( over 115 years old). We arrived late at 10:00pm and the staff was very accomodating, we had notified them in advance that we will be checking in late. There is a bar adjacent to the hotel that has an entrance from the hotel. The bar is open till 10:00pm, and closes when all customers leave. We were concerned if there will be noise in our room. However our room was extremely quiet! Will be adding a video of the room with this review. We stayed in room 210. It was at the end of the hallway and was absolutely beautiful! A lot of notable people have stayed in this hotel including Whoopie Goldberg, a famous director, the Queen of Denmark and even the world's tallest man. I highly recommend this place! read more

A whiteout(snow squall) on my way to Idaho I pulled off and chose to stay here for the night. Seeing this place had a rating of 5.0 reviews I opted to stay here as opposed to the standard commercial places. I had a great experience on all aspects, from checking in later in the evening to all my interactions with everyone. The nostalgia of the room which still had that old time feel, but with a few of the modern comforts. Wondering around the common areas and observing all the old time photos and touches of history preserved was beautiful. So many friendly dialogs and great experiences will have this place in my memory forever. read more

Unfortunately had a terrible experience. Stayed here in December when it was very cold. This is a very cute boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Livingston. Staff was very friendly at check in and took us up to our room. Having booked one of their king suites for the night, it was well appointed and a really neat vintage style room. The attendant who got us checked in noticed the main radiant heaters were not working but advised the small wall heaters should be sufficient. There was no one from maintenance available to fix the heat. Needless to say the small heaters were insufficient. I understand that this is a very old boutique hotel, but the front desk is unstaffed at night and no one to contact for extra blankets or to change rooms. Miserable experience and unacceptable as we froze that night. Emailed management multiple times after checkout with no response. Would advise against staying here during winter season. Disappointed with the lack of customer service from the property, staff was great though. read more

This historic Grand Dame of Livingston is an incredible gem. We had a two bedroom suite. The bathroom is not posh, but it is updated and nice. The furniture, the uneven wood floors, the noisy trains, the downstairs honky tonk, the crazy old hand crank elevator operated only by staff, the thread bare lobby! The dark doors with hand painted numbers and transoms. All fantastic. But its about the ghosts of the past, the famous stars, the celebrtiy directors that have stayed here that add a patina to the aura of this place. Its hard to descriobe, but the air here, the fresh clean air still holds the feelings of all the patrons prior. Its almost paranormal, but in a good way. STAY HERE! read more

A little disturbing considering my Boyfriend was trying to take me to a romantic spot on a cross country trip full of Days Inn and Best Westerns. The place is the exact opposite of disturbing The amazing details that go into this place is what it's all about. Each room is owned by a private owner. So essentially they are condo rooms. They have standard size rooms and suites. We stayed in a suite and we loved it. LOVED IT. So clean and so fresh and updated, giving it the Montana western flare without feeling like you stepped into a dude ranch. It's tasteful. I really liked how when we checked in, the Hotel employee gave us a tour of the space, personally took us to our room and gave us history on the hotel and the room itself. CAN I PLEASE MOVE IN? From the second we checked in, everything was perfect! Deborah at the front desk was a delight, our room was awesome (the bathroom was amazing), the bar attached to the hotel is super fun (food is great too), there's a rooftop patio, and seriously i want to move in. Or at least stay for more than one night! Anthony Bourdain stayed here in, in the same suite where filmmaker and screenwriter Sam Peckinpah lived for the last 7 years of his life! (yes, i did creep up to the floor where this suite is, just to look at the room for the sole fact that Anthony Bourdain slept there - i don't know who the hell Sam Peckinpah is, i'll google that later! BUT ANTHONY BOURDAIN! MY CELEB CRUSH!) Room was large, made from combining two former small rooms, and well decorated. Bed was comfy. Probably way over furnished. The hotel was full of old furniture and curios as a historic hotel should be. The elevator was old, historic you could say, could only be run by an employee. Quaint? Inconvenient if you have a weak heart and can't walk to the 4th floor. On the trudge up 4 floors there are landings with antique furniture that you're not allowed to sit in to take a breather. Yes, an employee could have run the elevator for us if there hadn't been 2 parties waiting to be checked in. We had a beautiful 4th floor corner room with views to the east and north, right next to the red neon HOTEL sign. The venetian blinds helped with that. BTW Why does this place have only 2 Yelp $$??? I've never understood the premium price you pay to stay at places like this, higher price for inconvenience? And how charming are ancient radiators? Shouldn't they have been removed when the place was renovated? You've got to really WANT TO stay here, there are more convenient and more economical places to stay. (((The Econo Lodge gets a 4.0 out of 5.0 on TripAdvisor. for less than half the cost of this place.))) What we didn't catch when we booked the place was that to the north, just across the street is a VERY busy railroad freight yard. All night long there is railroad business going on. Thoughtfully, the Murray Hotel provides EARPLUGS, on the night stands to help you not be bothered by the noise. If you're a train buff you'll love this place. We were looking forward to a great breakfast before we headed into Yellowstone... all that was available was the coffee shop called Gil's next door, not sure if its actually part of the hotel. Sat down, looked at the menu for 15 seconds and opted for the Macs down the street instead since the offerings appeared to be equivalent and the pricing was much more favorable at MickeyD's. Here's what you do: spend the day fishing the spring creeks, or maybe the Firehole down in the park, then head up to the Murray to check in for a brief nap before you fish the evening hatch. Come back in time to walk down to the Chop House (they stop serving at 10pm), drink large cold beers, and stumble back to the Murray for a good night's sleep. Repeat. The Murray got stripped and sold in 1979, so the current owners had to search all over to replace the historic details. The result is a mix of antique and modern, with kitchenettes in the suites and clawfoot tubs. Best baskets of amenities in any hotel I've stayed in (razors, emergen-C, dried fruit, toothpaste) and a rooftop deck. All for as low as $149, and that's even cheaper if you're sharing with your buddies. If you're thinking of staying in Bozeman or Gardiner, it's worth traveling a little further to stay here. read more

The trains going by at all hours and the bar downstairs with the live band till 2:00 am its ridiculous to try and block out all the noise with ear plugs. The hotel is historic and the staff is very nice but it's not a place for any sort of resting or sleeping. You can feel the bass guitar in your bed and then the crowd goes out back or on the sidewalk to yell and scream at each other when the bar closes at 2:00am, who thought a night club with live music below a hotel with paper thin walls was a good idea? Went with a group of people to this place. You can clearly party till the wee hours of the morning without hitting any noise violations as we were not the only ones there laughing and making noise. The lady was stellar. We initially had a room with two beds and a couple more people showed, so since they had a double room with 3 beds, we were upgraded at no cost. Place had a small kitchenette which was nice, with couch and chairs. The place has a bar right underneath ith with karaoke, pool table, and darts. Drink prices are dirt cheap in montana. 3 shots for under 10 dollars. And pitcher of beer for I think about $6.75. Montana, half the pirce, twice the fun. read more

This place is nothing more than amazing. As soon as you walk in the front door you are greeted by the western style of years gone by. I was waiting to see Wild Bill or Calamity Jane come walking around the corner. The staff is very accommodating and welcoming. You must go up the old fashion hand cranked elevator at least once. I am claustrophobic and I didn't mind the ride at all. Our room was perfectly decorated with two comfy fainting couches, wash basin style sink and old tub. King size bed was as big as Montana and I wanted to take it back home with me! Be sure to spend a few days as it just gets better every day. read more

I grew up in Livingston but hadn't been back for 20 years. Stayed at the Murray for 2 nights. We had the grand master suite. It was very comfortable and beautifully decorated as was the entire hotel. I liked going down the stairs so I could check out the other floors as all the decor is unique. Lots of charm and history here. Staff was very nice. Loved hearing the train rumble through town again so definitely didn't need the earplugs. Fantastic location everything is within walking distance and we were able to get coffee and have some good dinners or a couple beers without worrying about driving back. read more

This place is a one and a four star... cool hotel for its history but last night was a very uncomfortable experience when our heater was broken. The front desk gal came and checked it and noticed it was freezing in the room so we had to leave the door open for an hour to get heat from the hallway. The heater never kicked on. We ended up just using all the blankets and towels in the room to stay warm. It was to cold to not be under the covers and definitely too cold to showers. We told the gals at the front desk in the morning that it never warmed up but we tough it out since we had a few cocktails in us and couldn't go somewhere else. They didn't offer us a discount, or another night at a different time or not charge us for the stay. Very disappointing! read more

Stayed in Murray Hotel 2 nights 2nd floor while visiting Yellowstone. The hotel is an historic hotel. When checked in after 8 hours driving on the way to Yellowstone we specifically asked for 4th floor and quiet room and were promised that the one we got on the 2nd floor is a quiet room, and that we're not going to hear any noise. That happened to be Incorrect the noise coming from the train and trucks driving down the street was so loud you can hear it anywhere.BE AWARE the hotel is located near a BUSY RAILROAD and if you're looking for a quiet place at night you won't find it here. Pro: comfortable bed, Mini refrigerator and micro in room,2 flat screen T.V. Ice machine in hallway, A/C ( unable to adjust temp only on/off button),nice coffee shop and restaurant in a walking distance,the person at the front desk was welcoming. Con: the hotel located near railroad and the noise level coming from the train is VERY LOUD and will wake up almost every person this will go on and off all night. If you have no problem falling back to sleep then you're OK. We couldn't because the once we fell a sleep there were huge trucks driving by or another train. We found ear plugs with a note on the night stand saying something like: If you found the train noise not very romantic you can use it. Not a good sign! We were lucky that while our stay the band at the bar down stairs didn't play. So that wasn't an issue. There is nobody at the front desk from 10pm to 8am. Only the staff can operate the elevator because it's 100 something years old. So no elevator during this time. In my room no desk for laptop Faucets located in the bedroom. Not counter top to put your toiletry. Faucets and sink are old and you'll get water from it as long as you hold to it. How you suppose to wash your hands like it. Very inconvenient. Towels smelled funny No washer & dryer in the hotel Parking on the street Room Tip: If you are looking for a good quiet sleep it may not be best choice choice. read more

The hotel itself was wonderful: comfy beds, AC, nice interior, etc. It's really a shame that most, if not all, of the staff were incredibly rude. Any legitimate question we asked was answered with a scoff and a judgmental reply. It felt as though we were an imposition simply for checking in. This "too cool for you" attitude was something we thought we'd left behind in San Francisco, and it's a shame that it put a damper on an otherwise wonderful hotel. Great customer service. 4. Wireless. (gotta have my internet so I can find food places, etc.) 5. Very cool, old fashioned, Western Style downtown, lots of places to eat and some very cool shops to visit. $89/night for a regular room plus tax. What I did not like about this place is the noise. I hope you like trains, because there is a railway on the other side of W. Park Street, roughly 400 ft from the hotel. You'll be hearing them, even around 10:45 PM. If you can sleep with earplugs (I can not), you'll be doing better. Next is the bathroom, which is decent, howerver you can't keep the water in the sink running unless you keep holding the handle.....I can not stand this, how does one suppose to wash his hands like this? read more

The original train station is across the street and now is only used for freight, which may be a problem for some because the train runs through town at all hours. We didn't find it a problem, and it adds to the overall experience. We stayed in a two bedroom suite with kitchen that was completely renovated - very comfortable with all amenities. First off, this is a historical building, but the rooms have modern amenities. We found out that the rooms are actually condominiums that you can buy and then rent to the hotel guests or use for yourself. Each room is decorated differently, but the ones that I saw maintain the vintage feel you get when you enter the hotel's lobby. The elevator is 100 years old and you have to have one of the staff operate it for you. My wife and I loved this touch. You also get an actual key to your room! There was a nice sized fridge in our room as well as microwave. The bed was a real King size bed and quite comfortable. It looked like our room was made from three of the original hotel rooms. It was very spacious and comfortable. There was sitting area, a bed area and the bathroom had a claw foot bathtub in it. In the bathroom we were supplied with everything other hotels give you (soap and shampoo) and way more than we expected (combs, toothbrush, tooth paste and even a razor, plus more). There were also ear plugs on the bed to block out the train whistles at night, the hotel is right across the street from the railroad depot. Some people might consider this a con, but to us it just added to the ambiance. Finally, there are many good places to eat and drink nearby, including two restaurants attached to the hotel. We would like to come back here some day and spend more time in Livingston. The only bad thing about the hotel is having to find a parking place on the street. read more

It's almost one stop shopping...get a room at the Murray, go downstairs to the Murray Bar, and have a fantastic dinner at the adjoining 2nd Street Bistro.
