After trying both versions, I personally prefer the original pork soup over the spicy Layoo version, although both were excellent. On this latest visit to the newer Bayside branch, I definitely enjoyed this location more. The main reasons are that they have a large selection of menu items and it's not as busy. As for the food, here is my ratings and comments for everything we tried. Dweji-gomtang (7.5/10) - I came here with my parents because they have to intake less sodium, so this light and clean broth was perfect for them. I personally added some salt to bring out the flavor of the soup. The thinly sliced pork tasted awesome in the wasabi dipping sauce. So-Bbol Gomtang (7/10) - Another extremely clean soup, but this time it's beef based. Unfortunately, compared to many other Korean beef soups I have had over the decades, this one was less flavorful. The beef cheek, brisket and tripe were all great though. Lard Donkatsu (8.5/10) - This was the highlight of our meal. What deliciously juicy and tender thick cut pieces of pork fried to perfection. Not greasy and super crispy. The accompanying potato salad and shredded cabbage were both fantastic too. Ebi Katsu (8/10) - Little appetizer that was well made and tasty. Crispy panko outside, bouncy small whole shrimps on the inside, paired wonderfully with the fairly acidic tartar sauce was delightful. Kimchi Mandoo (6.5/10) - I am generally not a mandoo fan, even after trying some of the more famous ones in South Korea. I do think the thin skin on these mandoo are excellent, with a slight chew. However, I don't like the finely diced filling. The standout flavor of the kimchi also masks everything else. Can't really taste the pork. Mung Bean Pancake (6.5/10) - I had really good ones in Korea and these didn't really compare. I wish it was more crispy and had a more savory flavor. As for service, Jay was very attentive even though he was handling the entire bar on his own. An example was refilling my tea cup several times when it became half full. Honestly, he was so busy taking care of everything that I didn't expect him to do so when the tea pot was right in front of me. Anyway, he was excellent. Lastly, we met Chef Ok, who was in the store for a while before leaving for the Manhattan branch. My parents and I really enjoyed watching Netflix's Culinary Class Wars, so I told him that we saw him on season 2. He was very friendly and took pictures with all the patrons in restaurant. Anyway, if I feel like a good fried katsu in Queens, this is now my new go to spot. I also believe my parents will want to come back for the light and clean soups. Either way, we'll be back.
