Have volunteered at this organization for a few years now. I can honestly say the people truly care about the pups and seek to match them to the perfect forever home. They use a stepping stone method from inhale to home. The pups start in a triage shelter to ensure the dogs are healthy through vet visits, stabilize the pups after any transit, and to get to know the intricacies of the individual characteristics of the new arrivals. They use this information to pair up the dogs with foster homes, helping the pups learn how to live in a caring environment and structured routines. This helps prepare the dogs for success at the next step which is adoption. Some dogs are so well adapted to the new surroundings that they can skip ahead in the process but others need time to decompress from the trauma they experienced. Again, this places has a mission to help dogs find their perfect home. Feel free to volunteer with the organization as I do, sign up as a foster, or even adopt a new family member. During the pandemic, my dog went missing, and I later found out he had been transferred from the city pound to a rescue organization called Fetching Tails. I contacted Fetching Tails to inform them that the city pound directed me to them to retrieve my dog. However, they continually insisted that the dog was not mine, even though I had cared for him for over 10 years. I recognized my pet immediately, especially since he had a distinctive haircut I explained he received on the day he went missing. We hadn't put his collar on him that day, but I was sure it was my dog. Their insistence felt absurd, like someone telling you your child isn't yours just because they're wearing a different outfit. What upset me even more was when I decided to drop the back-and-forth email exchanges and asked to adopt the dog since he was posted on their website for adoption. They informed me he was available but had recently been transferred to them. They mentioned that communication had been delayed during the pandemic; however, I found it hard to believe anyone was actively looking to adopt a pet amid a global health crisis. I reached out several times - called the police chief - wrote to the governor - and the city mayor, and even sent the white house a letter about this company but was told to hire a personal lawyer to fight them. I couldn't afford to do so. My son, who loved the dog so much, lost his best friend, and to turn around to know they've done this to someone else is so upsetting. I would not trust this establishment. Each time I see this name, I will tell the story of my experience with this company. I was never asked to view the dog in person to confirm or anything. They said it wasn't my dog, and that was supposed to have been good enough, so I wouldn't recommend them for anything but a scam/scheme. read more

This place is great if everything works out. If it doesn't, you are in big trouble. They say they will accept pets back if they don't work out. But they don't. I had adopted a puppy from them in 2021 and it was the perfect situation. Couldn't have been better. Fast forward to 2023 and we adopted another dog from them, a 1 year old. Within 3 months the new dog had attacked my smaller dog. Big hole in his neck and ear. We thought they would eventually figure it out and kept working with the dogs. Another attack on my first dog 3 months later. Another one at Christmas 2023 and my daughter actually got bit trying to break up the fight. More holes in my small dog.... May 4 2024, another fight ensues. This time I got bit. 15 stitches and almost lost the tip of a finger. 2 weeks later another fight during food time which had never been a problem before. At this point I reached out to the organization about rehoming the dog. They told me to send him to a boarding trainer they recommend. To the tune of $1500. But I love my dogs, so I did. He was home for about a month and attacked my other dog again. This time the little guy needed 8 stitches and I was bit again breaking up the fight. I reached out to them once again about rehoming the dog. The gave me all the hoops to jump thru and I did. They told me it would take time to find a foster or new home. I expressed to them multiple times that I did not have that kind of time. Things were getting dangerous at my home and they knew it. 10 days after that, the new dog (unprovoked) attacked the smaller dog again. Ripped out stitches and needed 8 more. When I took my smaller dog to the vet, he looked me dead in the eyes and told me the new dog needed to be euthanized. I reached out to fetching tails once again and told them if they did not have the dog out of my house by the end of the week, I would handle things. Got another message back telling me that "these things take time". I once again reiterated that I didn't have time. No response. Here's the icing on the cake. Today I get an email telling me they found out he had been euthanized and shame on me (for protecting my home, I guess?). They now say they would have boarded him if they knew we were going to do this. That, by the way, is utter nonsense. I gave them plenty of opportunity to help. They say they are putting ME on the do not adopt list that every organization has access to and I am a horrible person and I don't deserve to own a dog. I would give this place -100 stars if possible. There are plenty of other organizations to adopt from, use someone else. And to whomever from ftf reads this (because I'm sure you will). Please understand that all that was needed from you was a sincere apology for none of this having worked out. It happens. I get it. Dogs don't always get along and rehoming takes time. But sending me a hateful and threatening email after forcing me into a heartbreaking decision really goes above and beyond in the being a jerk category. Shame on you, not me. read more

We have adopted 2 different dogs from Fetching tails this past year. Fetching tails responded to our inquiry almost immediately, which is amazing for a volunteer run organization. We were able to set up a time to meet the dog (each time) quickly even though I have a an irregular schedule. They took the time to make sure we knew what would be required in caring for the dogs as well as visiting our home to ensure it would be a safe and appropriate place for a pet to live. In each adoption they were very helpful and informative, never seemed bothered by my endless questions and continue to be in touch with us for updates and questions. Fetching tails rescue was recommended to me after having a very bad experience with another shelter. ( 2nd chance in Kirkland Illinois). I saw Betty Ann on the fetching tails website and immediately fell in love. I called her foster mom, Maria, and she told me everything she knew after having Betty for a month. We did a " meet and greet".....and agreed she would be a perfect fit. Maria gave me food, Betty Ann's bed and dish. The adoption was easy and very professional. After a week, Maria came over just to see how Betty Ann was getting along. All of her vet visits and papers were up to date. This recuse is a joke and they would rather put 2 dogs in danger and rip people on Facebook instead of taking care of the situation. I told them a puppy I was fostering was in danger as my female dog wanted to eat her. I was told...'are you really giving it time? It's only been a few hours' by the foster coordinator when I asked for help - Lady I know my dog - and then was told that they couldn't guarantee that the poor little scared puppy could be removed from my home that day. That's when I lost it and started yelled that she needed to listen to me and remove the dog from our home. I was told that I signed a contract to foster to which I replied - 'what are you going to do have me arrested because we need the puppy out of my house for her safety' Thankfully - with no help of the foster coordinator or anyone from FTF for that matter - my best friend stepped up and got a foster in place by 3:00 that day. I was then blasted on Facebook by all of the people who wouldn't step up to help. I have walked dogs for them, tried to foster, supported their fund-raisers and donated several hundreds of dollars to this 'rescue' and Instead of helping with a dangerous situation- I was met with resistance. I know my dog and l so that she was NOT happy. Before you donate to them check out their rating on Charity Navigator 58 out of 100 which is a failing score. They have threatened to put me on a 'no foster' list - to which I stay have at it - I know plenty of people in the Illinois rescue world who respect the work I have done for them and have supporting me when fostering. And it's also slander, as I/we did nothing wrong except try to handle a stressful, dangerous situation. As someone once told me...no good deed goes unpunished. read more

I'm surprised to see the negative reviews here since we had such a great experience adopting from this group. From start to finish, the process was very smooth. We saw our dog (Wayne Campbell) on their facebook page, we applied for him, they contacted us, then brought him by for a playdate. Once he chose us, it was about a week to finalize the adoption. I reached out in a crisis for a cat. I didn't know they were just a dog rescue. I messaged on Facebook and the response was quite rude. I was told to "next time check the website before reaching out." Instead of being rude, just say, "we are so sorry you are in this situation, we don't take cats but here are some shelters that you might want to contact." I told them that was actually rude and they blocked me. Even if you don't take a certain animal, don't brush people off. This speaks volumes on professionalism. I left a review earlier this week urging this rescue to reconsider their communication practices, because they do not disclose whether or not a dog you're interested in has multiple applications. Many people, like me, would remove themselves from the process in that case, especially when it's not a close drive as was the case for me. If you scroll down and look, their response focuses on nothing but the fact that we didn't get the dog. My main goal with reaching out to them personally and posting a review was to hopefully change their practices and ask them to be transparent with people from the start, especially when it's clear that there's already a chosen family before we even got there, based on the annoyance and careless behavior from one of their employees. Had I known that there were multiple meet and greets, I would have never taken my senior dog on a 45 minute drive each way and would've never put my child through the potential heartbreak. The response is exactly my point. They are so focused on creating a multi-application elimination event that they genuinely don't care about the effect that their actions will have on your child or your dog. My wife and I are in our early seventies but we're not quite done yet and wanted to give a rescure dog a great home with us. Several agencies either turned us down flat or actually told us that they wouldn't let us have a younger dog (Augie is two), but Fetching Tails met us and worked with us and found this beautiful terrier who had been abused and was very shy for us. We worked with several people, including two staff and two fosters and everything worked out just great. I have both fostered and adopted through Fetching Tails Foundation and am writing to share the wonderful experience I have had with both processes. I've fostered a number of dogs through FTF, some who had regular puppy stuff going on and others who had some more difficult behavior problems. FTF sets you up with a "foster buddy" who helps you navigate any issues, and you can join a supportive Facebook community to get your questions answered. All around, it's been a really great experience! They really put what is best for the dogs first and support you through the adoption process, and trust you as the foster parent to know what the best environment for the dog's forever home is. We also foster failed/adopted one of our foster dogs. It is hard not to fail with every single dog, who you naturally grow attached to, and with our new family member Grover he just fit in so perfectly with all members of our household that we knew this was the life for him. The adoption process went very smoothly and they provided a lot of great resources. We are continuing to foster more dogs now. There are a number of reviews here that have been left during the COVID-19 pandemic's surge in interest in adopting dogs. It is really a wonderful problem for a rescue to have -- too many families wanting to adopt dogs and not enough dogs to go around! But of course it led to some prospective adopters not being chosen, because the small rescue can only do so much. I will say that every puppy I have fostered through the shelter in place order had around a dozen applications in less than 24 hours, and being the one to go through them and determine which family is best for the dog can be a lot of work and is stressful. I hope everyone knows that there is a ton of work going on behind the scenes and our goal as foster parents is to make sure the dog goes to the forever home that best fits the dog's needs. It may not always be a quick process, but you are adding a family member, not buying a new car. Wouldn't you prefer to know the dog you're adopting is the best fit for your lifestyle, and will thrive with you? After a year or so of not living with our big fat crazy lab Sadie, it was finally time to start looking for a new partner in crime. We were definitely looking to adopt so we looked around at some local shelters. Fetching Tails Foundation was absolutely amazing in communicating with us right away after filling out information regarding interest in their dogs. We were able to find out so much through the foster parents of each dog (shout out to Donna K.!) as well as the other volunteers dealing with email and other web related communications. I cannot say the same for some other rescues where we had dog inquiries. All of the volunteers were also fantastic. You can tell that they really care about their dogs and truly have a passion for finding the best life for the dogs they take in. The money that you pay for the dog doesn't even come close to covering the amount of love and care they give to each and every one of their dogs so even if it doesn't work out, and you end up having to give the dog back (which I have heard of and can't even imagine), the donation is well worth it for the work that they do. Do NOT work with this agency. Our experience with them, and especially Linda, the co-founder and president, has been terrible. We were misled about a dog that we adopted a few years ago, being told that he was a golden mix. He was not, as we found out when we did a DNA test on him. In fact, he was part American Staffordshire Terrier, a known aggressive breed. When he bit our daughter a couple of days after we adopted him, Linda told us that he's just getting used to his new home, talking us into keeping him. We had him for three years, trying to integrate him into our family, to love him and care for him. We hired a trainer and spent considerable time and money, giving the dog many chances, but his aggression has gotten to an unacceptable level with our small children. The agency's agreement clearly states that they have to take him back if he is no longer a fit for a family. After we reached out to Linda via email, we were told that they have no room and "maybe he be better put down." When I called her this morning, she hung up on me. This place is unethical, unprofessional, and has really been a terrible experience. If you are considering adopting from here, you've been warned. read more

I made my review on google but i dont care, more people need to see how stupid this foundation is. i've been trying to adopt a dog i found through petfinder who is in a foster home. absolutely disrespectful and might i even call, stupid!!! i was trying to adopt Johnson, everything he needed for a home i have, and everything i needed in a dog he had. i was in the process of scheduling a meet and greet too. when Linda (i am assuming is either his foster mom or someone who works at the shelter) told me, WORD FOR WORD, "johnson is scared of people, so you having an electric fence is too much for him". EXCUSE ME?! HOW DOES THAT EVEN MAKE SENSE!? you know seeing that johnson was up for adoption for 7 months or more means he was most likely in the shelter his whole life, seeing petfinder says he's roughly 1 year and 3 months old. for a shelter you guys do a "lovely" job at finding homes for your pups. hire better and smarter people. i can't believe that moron of a woman told me that lame excuse. i have email receipts and everything, can and will post them if you decide to reply to this. so incredibly disappointed. let's also bring up the fact that there is/was a lawsuit on them!!! they tried putting a stolen dog up for adoption!!! do not adopt/work with them!!! read more

Awful. Would never recommend this rescue. I do not believe they know their animals as well as they should, prior to placing them. Many other shelters are very knowledgeable on whether or not their dogs should be the only dog in a home, or need another dog, if they can live with a cat, if the dog should not be in a home with children, etc. They fail miserabley at this, which can become a very dangerous situation for any family. read more

I would be embarrassed to have the volunteer that we had to work with representing your organization. The foster mom was lovely and the dog was more than worthy of a lovely home. We drove a long way out to the adoption and was not not told it was rescheduled. When we tried to get the volunteer to work with us ( since we were already approved), she was rude and dismissive. We left with two crying children who wanted nothing more than to take the sweet girl home, were devastated by the way she spoke to us and being told that because we were upset we could no longer move forward. Fetching tails displayed a wealth of ignorance, lack of professionalism and outright bias views. Applied for a dog, took the risk to meet dog, foster mom and poor excuse of a representative. During my visit a family of 4 showed up and other random drop ins. Not only is this a violation of large group gathering, but not what I agreed to. This secured my precautious decision on leaving my high risk son at home for meet and greet. I was informed the next day that that the family of 4 was a better fit to adopt the dog, but that I was a wonderful person and to reach out if there were other dogs of interest. The family of 4 has 2 older kids that are allegedly NOT planning on returning to their social life, sports or school after the pandemic. "So someone will always be home". The fetching tails representative, Linda, implied I was someone who wanted a dog just for pandemic quarantine. I'm currently 1 of 3 engineers that joined COVID fight. Working a stable schedule for the next foreseeable year. I started our pet search over 3 months ago and previously owned large dogs & horses. My 5yr old son has a congenital heart disease that the fetching tails representative, Linda, did not think would be capable of exercising a dog. Crushed by the decision and informing my son, I attempted to learn from situation. Mistakenly assuming, Linda was a dedicated professional in finding a home for all adoptable's; I sought her professional advice on what she thought a good fit would be. She no longer responded or attempted to assist in adopting some of the other dogs available. I'm very disgusted by Linda's ignorance capabilities of children with heart disease, her ability to adhere to no large group gatherings, shocked upon her bias perspectives and sad she could not maintain professionalism to give a dog a forever home. In these unprecedented times humanity either steps up or disappoints. Fetching tails is a huge disappointment on all levels of ignorance, prejudice and professionalism. Simply in pet adoption for the wrong reason. If this was a misunderstanding, why didn't I receive a response when seeking clarification? Because she had been fostered so long, and our fur baby of 15 years recently passed, they recommended we do foster to adopt to ensure it was a right fit. They let you meet the puppies but then end up giving them to their friends who were interested. They said we were not a good fit but did not explain why, since they also never even did a home visit, but they were quick to favor their friends and give the puppies to them. In 2019, the last of my dog pack sadly passed away. This was the first time in 29 years that I was dogless. There was definitely a void in my life. I had previously made the decision that when it was time for me to adopt again, I would dedicate myself to seniors in need. So in December of 2019, I found myself on Petfinder searching for senior Chihuahuas. I narrowed my search to a 50 mile radius of my zipcode and so began my search. There certainly was no shortage of senior Chihuahuas in need of a new home. One was cuter then the next......all of them worthy of the safety of a loving home. Then I saw him! My blonde, not so little boy, handsome as can be and wearing a bowtie, no less. I read his profile which indicated that he was surrendered by his previous owner to Chicago Animal Care and Control. Not only was he a senior, but he was also deaf and blind. Fetching Tails had pulled him from CACC and I just knew that the people at Fetching Tails had to be special. For them to have seen value in a special needs senior Chihuahua spoke volumes to me. The fact that they took a chance on him and knowing the challenges that they would face in adopting out a dog like my Elmer just means so much to me. I immediately sent in my application. The application was lengthy and asked about my previous pet ownership, how long my pets were with me and even who my veterinarian was. I could tell that Fetching Tails was truly wanting to make the right match. The following day, I got a call from Elmer's foster mom. We spoke for quite a while and at the end of the conversation she asked me if I wanted to do an in person/dog meet and greet. Of course I did! A couple of days later, Karen and Elmer made the Trek to my place in Chicago. Karen continued to ask pertinent questions, met with my sister who also lives in my building and also checked my yard for safety and security. I really appreciated and understood the scrutiny. At the end of our visit, I knew I wanted Elmer. But what I really liked was the no pressure stance that Karen took. She said "Elmer will always have a home even if he never gets adopted". That just touched my heart. It truly was a win win for Elmer and that is what was most important. Karen still needed to call my references so we decided to touch base soon. Well, the following day I called Karen to let her know that I wanted Elmer. Karen informed me that my references had all checked out, including the call to my vet. YAY, THAT BOY WAS MINE! That weekend we made it official. Karen brought Elmer home to me and was just SO generous. She gave me the bed that Elmer had been sleeping in, a fleece blanket, a collar, a couple of sweaters, some supplements....that boy sure was well cared for. Karen will always be referred to as "mommy Karen" and I will be forever grateful to her and Fetching Tails for bringing us together. This review is long, I know. But there is one last thing I would like to touch on here. I read a previous review for Fetching Tails that was less than flattering. I feel the need to comment, coming from someone with no personal attachment to Fetching Tails organization. In years past, I have fostered many dogs. I have had adoptees swear up and down that they would never relinquish a pet after adopting one. Low and behold they do just that. Adopted pets ending up back at a shelter is extremely traumatic for an animal. Reputable organizations will look at the best fit for the animal and that is the way it should be. They are advocating for that animal. Renters, young couples wanting children, lack of fencing in a yard....these are not necessarily red flags but they are things that need to be considered when placing a pet. Rejection is never easy but it happens. Pet adoption is not about who gets their application in first but who is best for that particular pet. I wish people could really understand that. Personally, I would highly recommend Fetching Tails to anyone looking to add a four legged family member to their household. I have been able to experience FTF on both ends, first as an adopter and then most recently as a foster. They love they have for these animals is astounding. They take in seniors (which I have the pleasure of currently fostering), dogs with medical needs, puppies, and any other four legged canine fur baby. They put lots of thought into placing their animals, doing the best they can to make sure the dogs go into loving forever homes. I've fostered dogs for years on and off through Fetching when my life permit it. I also adopted one of my fosters who has health issues. They spent a lot of time and money on Minnie who was a mess health wise. My foster dogs are always super well taken care of. I get to be very involved in the adoption process. I adopted my puppy thru Fetching Tails Foundation, and everyone there made it so easy! From filling out the application, meet and greet, home inspection, and adoption! Jen was with us every step of the way!! She had helpful tips for caring for my puppy, and I could tell she really cared for him! Katie at adoption was professional, thorough job of explaining everything. Sandy and Dale have been helpful with vet visit set ups!
