I want to give more than 5 stars for NLOL. Our adoption counselor Jackie is just amazing in terms of support she provides! She checks in with me about the dog almost everyday provide appropriate support and guidance every time when I was faced with difficulties because the dog was not fully house trained. NLOL offers two week foster period before adoption, which is a wonderful mechanism to get to know the dog before the big commitment. I am still in the middle of the foster period but I am just beyond impressed by the support I was given. It has been an wonderful experience so far. If you read nothing else - fostering with New Leash on Life is the best, no-regrets decision I ever made. If you want more details about how and why I reached this conclusion, read on. I wanted to volunteer with animals, and I was frustrated by the larger organizations extremely limited opportunities and complicated process to volunteer. No, I didn't want to read a 50 page manual and take a test just to clean cages. I wanted to make a big difference in the lives of dogs and help Chicago become a no-kill city. Surely, it couldn't be that hard to find an organization with no red tape and an easy process to volunteer. Enter: New Leash on Life. I found them about 2.5 years ago on this Yelp page with their address listed downtown. I later realized this downtown address was only a PO Box which means NLOL does not have a physical location/adoption center. The implication of this is that all dogs go straight from rescue into foster homes until they find their forever families. This process can take weeks or sometimes months - depending on the dog. Don't let the uncertainty of a timeline deter you - fostering for New Leash is an absolute dream and here are my top three reasons why: 1. Unparalleled people - the nicest and most sincere adoption counselors. They constantly check up on the pups, their progress, and making sure you as a foster have everything you need. Not just via email- typically by text messages which means a quick response time. 2. Super flexible - a. Vacation or trip? No problem! New Leash will work with you and your schedule b. Work long hours? No problem! New Leash can schedule a walker to come during the day 3. And last but not least, THE DOGS. They really know how to pick them. Every dog that I've fostered has been kind hearted, adorable, and an A++ cuddler. Every dog deserves the right to a loving, safe home. Yes fostering is a short term arrangement, but it's a critical piece to helping these pups find their long term forever. I love NLOL. I got my pup from them about two years ago and have since volunteered with them. They are a volunteer run foster to adopt program, no shelter location. All the dogs live in homes with people and perhaps other animals. They may be small, but what they do is mighty. Very well organized and efficient, they always have the dogs as their #1 priority so you know they are well cared for and fostered in the best homes. Plus, they really get to know a dogs temperament and personality that way. I loved their foster to adopt process during adoption. They give you everything you need (food, crate, leash, toys) and you have the dog on a trial basis for two weeks. After that time is up, you decide if the dog is right for you and your lifestyle. I've worked with New Leash on Life - Chicago for a while - as both a volunteer and foster. I cannot say enough positive things about the organization. For starters, as an animal (specifically, dog) lover, I've always been drawn to spending my time volunteering for similar organization. However, as many animal lovers who have spent their time volunteering know, the majority of animal rescue groups seem to adopt an "exclusive" attitude and make it difficult for people to get involved. This couldn't be further from the philosophy at New Leash on Life (NLOL). If you want to volunteer, foster or help out in any way, the people are kind, welcoming and appreciative as the organization is completely volunteer run. They allow volunteers to be as active as they'd like to be and, if you want to become part of the "club," you can - it's as simple as that. Fostering with NLOL is easier than any other organization I'm familiar with. I love having a dog live with me (and, of course, the saving the lives of shelter dogs) but wasn't sure I was ready to have my own dog due to my work schedule and expenses. NLOL takes care of all foster dog expenses - from medical and food to transportation to the vet and events. Plus, they provide a dog walker daily, so I don't have to worry about the foster dog while I'm at work. NLOL is all foster-based, meaning that all dogs rescued are placed into foster homes, not a shelter environment. Fostering is so beneficial because it allows the organization to see a dog's true personality, as many are too frightened in shelter environments to shine. As a foster, I am able to report on the dog's demeanor, which helps NLOL match them with the best potential home. This helps with successful adoptions, since NLOL is able to recognize, through fostering, the type of environment best-suited to each dog and look for that environment in a potential adoption. While it is hard saying goodbye to my foster dogs, I know they're all going to a happy, loving home. I try to remember that, for every dog that lives with me and successfully gets adopted, another dog will be rescued from the kill shelter - in turn opening up space in the shelter for another dog. Plus, if the time comes that I cannot say goodbye to one, NLOL has a policy that allows fosters the first option to adopt. Honestly, I cannot imagine a more positive, rewarding experience. It's one of the best things I've ever done. People often say to me, "Wow - you foster dogs? That's so kind and you're giving them so much!" While that's appreciated, I often feel that the dogs give ME so much more than I ever imagined. Seeing the resilience and transformation of a scared dog learning to trust people again makes it so worthwhile and fulfilling - I will never get over how wonderful it makes me feel. New Leash is the third dog rescue organization I've volunteered with and is by far and away the best. The events are very well organized and there's one almost every weekend. From a both a potential adopter and potential volunteer standpoint, every one I have dealt with is extremely friendly and open - NLOL lacks the cliquish feel I've seen with other rescues. Please note that NLOL is not a shelter - as someone else mentioned the address on this listing is only a mailbox. NLOL tries to house all of its dogs in foster homes, which is great for the dog and gives adoption counselors a better idea of how a dog will behave in a home. Available dogs can be seen on the website and several dogs will be at each of the weekly events. The great thing about volunteering with NLOL is you don't need to make a standing weekly commitment - you can volunteer to staff adoption events as you have time. NLOL is also always in need of foster homes, so that's another great route if you want to help! read more

There are a lot of great organizations in the city- but NONE with as much passion and dedicated volunteers! They are all volunteer run (yep, your donations don't pay for salaries or bonuses) and they rely TOTALLY on fosters- so no actual shelter to come visit the pups. You'll find them out and about at local businesses on weekends (think Whole Foods, Starbucks, pet food stores), showcasing a couple of rescues at a time. I've been volunteering with this group on and off since 2006 and have adopted two dogs of my own through them. Out of the 3 rescue groups I work with in Chicago they may not be the largest but I truely believe they put the most time and care into both the dogs and making sure adoptions are good fits/go smoothly. Once a NLOL dog always a NLOL meaning once these dogs are pulled from ACC the are truely "saved" for the rest of their lives. If you are hesistant in adopting a dog because of concerns about making sure he/she will be a good fit for your family (because of children, cats, time commitments, etc) this is the organization to adopt through. Although they will not prevent a good home from adopting the dog they want they will suggest and even search for dogs they think that will be a good fit for your family help ensuring a smoother transition for everyone. The fact that most of the dogs live in foster homes or partner day care facilities means they often have more insight into the dog's personaliaty versus a scared dog in a shelter. Their 2 week foster to adopt program is ideal too to ensure everyone is happy before a final commitment. If you are not sure whether you a ready for a dog permenantly they are also always looking for foster homes. This gives you a taste of the dog ownership life without the life time commitment and gives NLOL a chance to save another life. I have been volunteering with New Leash for awhile and it has been (and I'm sure will continue to be) a fantastic experience. The dogs are quite well tempered, intelligent, and very sweet. The volunteers are a random mix of young professionals, students, dog enthusiasts, etc. And in case you are worried about time: you are never obliged to do anything or "guilted" into helping out. New Leash is the only dog adoption group I have volunteered with, but I LOVE it! There are a LOT of weekends I am not able to volunteer, and I always feel horrible and get a little sad about not being there. The dogs I have met through them have all been the sweetest dogs on the face of the Earth. There have even been a couple I wish I could adopt myself. When the time comes to adopt a dog, it will definitely be through New Leash. New Leash should be the mold for every adoption group. What is the BEST about them, I think, is that they rescue their dogs from Animal Care and Control where they would otherwise be put to sleep. They take the dogs who have not been adopted yet through ACC and are on their way to euthanasia. They are literally giving these dogs a second chance, as I am pretty sure some have been saved at the very last second. If you are thinking of adopting a dog, I strongly suggest checking out their website or even better, going to an adoption event. They are every Saturday from 12-3:00 at various locations. I have fostered with NLOL for four years (15+ dogs) and suddenly quit because I learned they don't follow their own "legally binding contracts" (see item six) and have agreed to inhumanly train numerous dogs (Champ, Inky, Autumn to name a few who have come from abusive pasts) with a trainer who relies on a shock collar for her training. When confronted about this NLOL would not budge until forced. The majority of NLOL volunteers are amazing, but at this time NLOL is not to be trusted. Please consider a rescue that practices what they preach. I am doing this because these dogs deserve better and because there should never have been a question about NLOL's standards. read more

Where do I begin? First, NLOL brought us the love of our life, Louie. For that we will be grateful for the rest of our lives. Thanks to New Leash On Life, I found my first dog and love of my life, Olivia. She was an older pup when I adopted her in 2012 and has been nothing but wonderful ever since. The organization is run really well, as they are run completely by volunteers and foster homes so they don't have the overhead of having a facility. They have a 2 week foster to adopt process which is great for the dogs and potential owners, but I knew Olivia would be fine after the first night I had her in my apartment. I totally agree with the reviews already posted. We started looking for a canine addition to our family bout 3 months ago. I started with petfinder and was interested in a gorgeous german shepard...who was being fostered and cared for by NLOL. The dog was already in an adoption situation, but I was so impressed by NLOL that I ditched petfinder all together and searched only through their website. They were so incredibly patient with us as we were getting married and just weeks away from our wedding date. Ater many conversations, we decided to wait until after to officially start deciding on our new pup. Fast forward 2-3 months and loads of email conversations with our fabulous adoption counselor, Britt. She helped us locate a dog that would be cat friendly (very important since we have 3!). She not only emailed back and forth, but met us one (very early weekday) morning at the doggie daycare to have us meet the potential candidate. She told us everything they knew about her, showed us some ways to help with her puppy behaviour and then jetted to work. 2 days later, she brought Lily over for a home introduction. She stayed for hours and was extremely patient when our cats decided they did not like her b/c she was the one who brought Lily into the house! But after all was said and done, Lily stayed. We are currently in a Foster-to-adopt period with Lily. Let me make this easy and tag some of the great things so far: 1) Foster to adopt-you have a two week period in which the dog stays with you. You get to know the personality and help do a longer term determination if the dog is the best fit for your family. 2) During foster to adopt, NLOL arranges everything. If the dog needs medical care, they pay for it. If they are crate trained-the crate is provided. Food, toys and whatever else is needed also comes along. (Britt even brought over old towels for us to use in case Lily made messes!) 3) Awesome email contact. Never having a crate trained dog before brought us a smidge of stress when Lily barked for a straight hour in it. The next morning there was a 3 page email with hand written tips and training tools to use. 4) Really passionate people-that are total volunteers. I have been told that not a one of them gets paid in any shape to do this. 100% of adoption fees and donations go back to helping the rescued animals. 5) The hold weekly events so that people can meet the available dogs. 6) They often take dogs that may be harder to adopt. Older dogs, strays and pups who have little to no training. These guys totally have a 2nd chance because of these awesome people. I really, really can not say enough. I have been raving about them ever since I met them months ago...and now I can do it on Yelp as well. Highly Recommend!!!!! Update: We have officially (and smoothly) adopted Lily. And even though we are complete with the process, I still receive occasional emails checking on her status. Thanks NLOL! My boyfriend Simon and I started our dog adoption process by sending NLOL an e-mail about what we love most about his parents' dog, Missy, and asking if they had any available dogs similar to her. NLOL adoption counselor Megan knew exactly which dog was a match. At the next NLOL event, Simon met Duncan (then Siegfried) the toy Manchester terrier and sent me a picture-text of himself holding Duncan -- and I have NEVER seen him look happier in a photograph! Megan arranged for Duncan to visit us at home and then set us up for a foster-to-adopt situation, lending us all the supplies we needed and even paying to board him for a week while Simon helped me move from Brooklyn to Chicago. Megan was so kind and patient with us, extremely dedicated to Duncan, and so generous with her time and advice (NLOL is, astoundingly, completely volunteer-run!) One of her last e-mails hinted that we should get in touch again when we're ready for pup number two... and we replied, nah, one is enough... But sure enough, 6 months later, we wanted a companion for Duncan and saw Milton (then Gino) the elderly long-haired chihuahua on NLOL's Facebook page. This time, Kathleen was our adoption counselor, and she was every bit as wonderful as Megan. She was great about keeping in touch and absolutely a lifesaver when it came to transporting Milton to the vet for dental surgery and a check-up (all paid for entirely by NLOL.) We are so happy with our complete pup family! What sets NLOL apart, besides the staggering generosity of their adoption counselors, their strong communication efforts and their unique foster-to-adopt program, is their commitment to each and every animal. They have great intentions but you know the old saying, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" I know people who have adopted through NLOL and they do a great job of getting their dogs matched with the right forever homes. BUT as a previous post stated they are not great with communication. I received their 10th ann. Amazon Puppy shower list. Very excited to help, I immediately sent something out. As I've had problem with deliveries not getting where they need to be I tried to follow up. The "gifts" are sent to a private home in Evanston so I was unable. I'm not asking for gratitude or adulation but just an acknowledgement that package arrived would have been appropriate. There are so many good similar organizations out there if they want to stay relevant they need to be more conspicuous and communicate. read more

We are so happy we went through New Leash on Life to get our pup! The volunteers are so incredibly helpful. We fostered our dog before adopting just to make sure it was the right fit. I'm so glad we did it this way. We had many questions along the way and NLOL was there to answer all of them. Our pup is a little shy around other dogs so a volunteer even came to our house to show us how to introduce her to new dogs in a way that made her feel more comfortable and she is doing great with other dogs now! I rave about NLOL to anyone who will listen. My husband and I started looking into adopting a dog a few years ago. I contacted Kelsey and described what kind of dog we were looking for. She introduced us to Bunny, who was the chillest and sweetest adult pit I've ever met. Unfortunately, when Bunny came to visit our home, she had a hard time calming down around our 2 pet rabbits (quite ironically). We were really bummed as we had our hearts set on Bunny. Kelsey very kindly and wisely advised us let Bunny "go" and to give her a chance to find us a better match. She didn't disappoint! Within a few days she contacted us about a baby pit named Reika (now Bea) who was found with her siblings in an alley in the middle of January. Bea was not even 6 weeks old when she was taken from the streets, absolutely riddled with demodetic mange, full of worms, and complete with an upper respiratory infection. Kelsey and NLOL did an amazing job at addressing each and every health issue immediately. Demodetic mange is notoriously difficult to eradicate, but NLOL didn't fool around. Within six months she had completely healed and all of her fur grew back. Upon getting her health back, teenager Bea was no longer the lethargic pup she came to us as. She turned out to be chock full of energy and pep! A bit too much, to be honest. Kelsey gave us so much support and help throughout Bea's young life. When we encountered behavioral issues that had us pulling out our hair, she provided really solid advice and set us up with life-saving training classes. Bea is now a whip smart, incredibly friendly and loving 2 year old. Honestly, NLOL is incredible. Their volunteers are so committed and wonderful - we are forever indebted to them! read more

Love NLOL! After seeing Teddy (formerly Leonard) on petfinder.com, I contacted NLOL to try to meet him. They responded quickly and encouraged me to meet him at an adoption event. I'm so glad I went to the event! They encouraged me to apply and I adopted him not long after the event! NLOL does a foster-to-adopt program where they provide everything you need (food, crate, leash, collar, meds, supplies) for 2 weeks and then if all goes well you can formally sign the adoption papers. I think this is a great idea for both you and the dog to get to know each other before making a formal decision. Noelle from NLOL has been especially great. She was there for me by email and phone answering any random question I had (i had many!). I appreciated all the attention and support from NLOL. Applications are not necessarily first come first serve, it's about choosing the right fit for dogs and humans which I think sets apart NLOL from the rest :) I was not the first to apply for Teddy but luckily I was picked to adopt him.
