We went to Schottenhamel on the second day of Oktoberfest. What an absolutely amazing experience. This was the first Oktoberfest since 2019 and the energy was wild there. It was as if the whole area breathed a sigh of relief to be back to some semblance of normalcy.
A tent experience at Oktoberfest has two meanings. There are smaller tents which fit around 3k people and larger tents that push upwards of 6k people. The smaller tents are a little more low key, but may be harder to find seating. The big tents are a bustle of commotion, energy, and drinking. Neither experience is wrong.
Schottenhamel is where the whole festival begins with the tapping of the keg at noon on Saturday. The place stays turned up from then on. The food is Bavarian festival food, chicken, pork, Spätzle, etc. we had an amazing platter laid out for us that could have fed four people a whole meal and still had leftovers. That was just a sampler lol. The chicken is what we had here and it was amazing. Half a roasted chicken plopped down on a plate, well seasoned, and slow roasted so it falls clean off the bone. The breasts tend to get a little dry if you take your time eating it, just a heads up.
The beer is amazing Bavarian Weiss beer. Nothing needs to be said about that. The only warning is that if you are drinking the full liters, make sure you take your time unless you have done it before. It's easy to over consume when you aren't ready for what a liter of beer really is.
The energy in this tent was full on worth the experience. 6,000 people belting out oldies rock, newer songs, or even just rocking along to music you don't understand makes it worth it. When the band starts singing Ein Prosit, that is a toasting song so be ready to "Prost" your homies and have a glug.
If you're in the Oktoberfest area, make it a point to get over to this tent and just soak it up. It's amazing! read more
