I grew up loving stationery stores and want to support the few remaining ones like Paper Source. Unfortunately, the prices at Paper Source are very high, from greeting cards to gift wrap and gift bags. Also, you can't always get the service that you want right away. Earlier this month, I arrived to Paper Source soon after it opened at 10:00 and requested gift wrapping service. I bought a gift for a birthday party and wanted it nicely wrapped. There were two sales associates there and neither was able to offer gift wrapping services. I was told to return at around 3:30 and a sales associate on duty may be able to gift wrap for me. Also, they usually need 24 hours advance notice for gift wrapping. When I returned in the afternoon a little before 3:30, I was told that the person might be in at 4:00. I looked at the prices of the boxes and gift bags and decided that none of the waiting was worth it to have to likely spend $30+ dollars on a box, gift wrapping, and a gift bag. I went to Dollar Tree on Maple Road in Troy where there is a large assortment of gift bags. I bought a clear cellophane bag for $1.25 to put the gift in before placing it in a sparkly Happy Birthday gift bag for another $1.25. Total price was $2.50 and I didn't have to wait hours to have to spend ten times more at Paper Source. It's unfortunate because Paper Source can't afford to lose more customers to places like Dollar Tree or Party City, but it will continue to happen because of the high prices and lack of quick services. The quality difference of boxes and gift bags between a high end store like Paper Source and Dollar Tree is negligible. I also prefer Hallmark to Paper Source because I get a lot of coupons from Hallmark, including a monthly free greeting card signing up for Crown Rewards.

For the prices they charge and low-quality / discontinued fabric, this is far from an upscale fabric / upholstery atelier. The customer service is worse than the product and presentation. Upon walking in, no one greeted me, despite the fact that two employees were chatting at the central desk near the door. I found my way to the back area with the upholstery fabric. I wandered around a bit looking at the myriad sample decks. Because there was no information or pricing on anything, I returned and waited for the woman at the central desk to finish her chit-chat before acknowledging me. She apologized for being short-staffed (so probably not a good time to stand around and chat.) Upon arriving back in the upholstery fabric area, I began explaining my project and said I was seeking fabric in the $30-40/yard range. She abruptly cut me off and said sharply, "Don't have it." I explained I was able to find quite a few options online and know they exist in this range elsewhere and she snapped, "Then go online." I continued the conversation forward by describing the overall dimensions of the cushion seating bench and she again cut me off with a sharp-toned "How many yards?" as if I didn't know how to plan a cushion (or add and multiply). I bluntly replied, "Don't be short with me. I've been sewing for 30 years." I never understand why so-called "experts" (sales clerks) feel the need to be defensive and condescending rather than patient and helpful. There are a million questions she SHOULD have asked before this last one: desired quality, use, color, pattern, touch, durability, etc. Once we discussed details a bit more, she said, "All we have in the $30 range is cotton." If you had something in that range, why didn't you say so in the first place . . . other than trying to steer me into a higher price? When she showed me the swatches, I asked for the specific pricing as nothing was labeled. She replied with, "Can you imagine if we had to price everything individually?" At the end of my rope with her, I simply stated, "Yeah, you would actually have to work." I then turned and walked out. Too bad she couldn't have been attentive, pleasant, and helpful. Had she treated me with respect and courtesy, she would have made nice sale and new customer. Instead, she earned the store yet another 1-star rating on Yelp.

I have other snowman from Hallmark but I have to love the newest since I have limited room left on the tree. I also wanted the newest Mr. Sulu (makes the 2nd since EBS'S death.) I did pass on the Star Trek tree topper because it is too big for my narrow tree and the price of $149!!! It interacts with Sulu and the other 3 characters, but no. I always get 3 new ornaments each year, so I looked and found the perfect one- hitchhiking ghosts from the Haunted Mansion in Disney. I have always been fond of ghosts especially handsome ones. Found some footies I love and Good Day taco T shirt on sale. Like I said, too tempting. The Service is top notch and plenty of parking. It is hard to find Hallmarks open and this large. I thought it would mostly be cards and stationery but they have little gifts too, everything from UM/MSU gear to earrings to pajama pants. Staff were friendly though I do wish someone had asked me if I needed any help, took me a second to locate the stationery. I still have about $35 left on the gift card so I'll be back at some point!
