I was initially reluctant to use a wedding/event planner for several reasons - wanting to save money, being fairly crafty/creative myself and having confidence in handling on my own details in pursuing something less "traditional", and being pretty resourceful. Shortly into the planning process, I realized it was going to be harder than I thought. I then met Mandi Buckland of Element Design. What sealed the deal was her calm energy and diversity in events she's worked on (weddings, parties, festivals, including "green" fests/events). She was great in identifying several unique wedding location options in Southwest and Southern MI, including a fabulous barn, a garden, and a super cool lodge (we ended up at a mansion in Holland). When I asked her to design the invitations with a "modern art nouveau theme" using a peacock to match the theme of a mansion built in the early 1900s (not easy!) - she provided several fabulous sample designs within a short period of time. Our final invitations were really unique and fun! After our invites went out, I received an unexpected amount of of great feedback ("I love your invitations!" "They are so unique," etc.) and I could tell they made people look forward to the wedding. I felt like Mandi figured out my sense of my style quickly, and she was able to identify options that fit that were creative, cost-conscious (extra plus) and didn't compromise on quality. At the same time she was working with me, she was helping a friend design invitations for a wedding at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, so her range of work can be simple, arty/less traditional, to more traditional/upscale. Mandi is professional, efficient, super creative, and I would recommend her to anyone in Chicago, Detroit (or anywhere in between the two cities in Michigan or Illinois) who is planning a wedding in Southwest or Southern Michigan!

Due to the contract.... that was in Feb 2016.... My mother in law to be, DIED and my father has cancer and had a quadruple by pass in November 2014, so I had to cancle my wedding to help them with money (which is devastating all in itself ) and she held my feet to the fire. No one else did. The hall, photographer, cake baker, etc... everyone gave me even the deposit back to help me with our families medical bills. Which they so didn't have to do because they actually did work... Except her she met me once and had 2 phone calls... oh and some emails. Which 90% of the conversation was about canceling because of our families situations. .. she didnt plan anything or do anything. Oh no wait she put a post on facebook....woopie.... She wouldn't even give me half of my deposit back. She told me she couldn't because of the contract that was 2 years in advance and she could only give me something back when someone else booked with her.... what?! Are you serious. It was 600.00 down payment and seriously she did not do anything near that amount of work. I am so sorry I ever did any type of business with her. Wolf in sheep's clothing. Talks so sweet but yet... yes, we did have a contract but not until 2 years and she knew everything that was going on. She has no heart. Do yourself a favor don't do business with her. She's so desperate for money that she kept all of mine and did nothing to earn it but sign a paper... at the end if the day it was morally wrong. My dad almost died, my mother in law to be died,.... that's why I had to cancel my wedding.... She should be absolutely ashamed. I don't give a shit about the money anymore. Now I'm just warning all brides not to trust her because she has no morality or heart.

Although I did not use her as a wedding planner (didn't hire one at all) I did use her website (and subsequently, the discount) on my invitations. She must have contracts with a lot of the vendors because she offered the best discounts I saw in all my searches. Her customer service is top notch as well. When I sent in my order, she emailed me a question to clarify what I wanted on my RSVP cards. I had omitted something and she suggested I change it, which I did. I was pleased that she contacted me personally for that clarification, and very happy that she helped me improve the cards! I used her services on my invites, then advised my sisters-in-law to check out the website for their weddings. The only drawback I can see is that I think she only works in Michigan, so she may not be able to get discounted invites for people who aren't residents of the great mitten.

We received so many compliments from our guests on how great Emily was as our officiant! 100/10 would recommend her to anyone!! She starts off with a quick introduction meeting to get to know you as a couple. Next, you and your spouse fill out an extensive questionnaire together and separately. Emily creates your vows based on the answers from the questionnaire. We needed very few revisions from the original draft. My Mom had recommended someone she knew of, but our schedules didn't work out and I got somewhat of a bad vibe so I crossed him off the list. I took to "The Knot" and started looking at their vendor list for Officiants. I called 2-3 places and they all told me the same thing - $400+ for their services. Seriously? The ceremony will be all of 15 min, why so expensive??? I learned two things: 1) I'm in the wrong profession and 2) I needed to find someone more affordable and reasonable. Since I was striking out on The Knot, I went old school - yellow pages! I know...why didn't I just look at Yelp? Who knows! I think I was just getting discouraged and frustrated. Anyways. The yellow pages turned up Dream Wedding Ceremonies. There really wasn't a whole lot to choose from honestly. I called & he answered. Talking to Wayne made me feel like I was talking to my Uncle Johnny in Dallas. I felt so comfortable and at ease with him. His personality & character definitely came thru in our phone call and I knew this is the type of person I'd want to officiate our wedding. I've said how I think he's great, but here's why - he's thorough. Where are you getting married? When are you getting married? Oh you live in this county, well this is where you wanna go to get your marriage license. Don't get your marriage license too early cause it's only good for 30 days - 2 wks at the earliest is when you should get it. He tells you not to worry about anything, and if you have any questions at all to give him a call. He's great at communicating and I never felt like there was a lack thereof. Which is super important when you're a bride-to-be because everything worries & stresses you! Another thing that sets Wayne apart from other officiants is he doesn't require a contract. That made me a little nervous, so I sent him the payment in advance to ensure there was some kind of exchange. And as far as payment goes - he tells you he doesn't collect until the event date cause he doesn't want you to have to worry about it. Who does that?! After the ceremony, he takes the completed marriage license and takes care of filing it for you. See? He's really a great guy and I wish there were more people like him in the world. He's honest, trustworthy, helpful, friendly, caring, and fantastic at what he does! And if all this isn't great enough - he's affordable! If you're getting married and need an officiant, do yourself a huge favor and give him a call.

To start with: I was hooked on Debbie during our first conversations. Unlike other wedding planners I spoke with, she did not immediately push me on her packages and get me to sign a contract. Instead she spent two hours on the phone with me listening to our day and the issues we had run into so far planning. She immediately jumped in and worked with me trying to find solutions to these initial problems. I actually felt like she cared about our day and was going to work hard to make it perfect. That's when we chose her and over the year we planned together, we never regretted the decision. My husband and I had a complicated wedding day. We had 200 guests and had two ceremonies (Hindu and Christian) at two locations with a luncheon and evening reception. All in one day! It was logistically very complicated. In addition, Debbie had never planned an Indian wedding (which she was up front about during our initial conversations). While we definitely needed to both do our homework throughout the year, Debbie did an amazing job all year researching Hindu traditions and actually coming to us with ideas for vendors. She is unbelievably organized and meticulous which is definitely why our crazy day went so perfectly. We weren't sure if we could truly pull off our tight timeframe for the day but we did almost to the minute! Our guests definitely noticed how smooth the whole day was and appreciated it! We have received so many compliments about our wedding day from both of our families and friends. We were able to honor both sides and traditions and make the long day fun for them. Much of this success is due to Debbie. Debbie is also just truly a pleasure to work with. Her husband, Mike, and her are just "good people" that make it fun to spend hours throughout the year on the phone discussing what can be mundane details of a wedding day, checking out vendors, etc. She led us repeatedly to vendors that were similar - she tried to use smaller and locally owned vendors when possible. We were so happy with everyone she introduced us to and loved supporting local. One of the most telling signs of what Debbie meant to me is probably how I felt that week before the wedding. While I had some stress with our visitors and some private events we were hosting during the week with family and friends, I had NO stress about the wedding day itself. I had total faith that Debbie and her team would be on top of all the details. When my mom expressed a worry about how she'd know when this or that was happening on the day, I said "don't worry! listen to Debbie!" We used Debbie for Day of Planning, as well as having her assist us with the rehearsal the night before. We had several phone calls in the months leading up to the event. It was so helpful that she always had a list of things that I needed to accomplish before our next call. I had so many other things going on it was difficult to stay on task. Debbie took the time to meet with me and my family during one trip to Michigan and was able to meet with me again when I returned three weeks before. She was so kind to all of my family members, after our first meeting they all commented on how organized she was. In the weeks leading up to the wedding Debbie offered her assistance with all the last minute details, she even offered to help me out if my family was starting to drive me nuts. Before the events she confirmed all vendor appointments and even worked out a few kinks we had in the scheduling. I was able to drop all of the little details for the wedding to her in advance so I would not have to worry about the little things like table numbers and seating charts. The day of our wedding Debbie and her team were so helpful, everything was seamless, she took charge of the ceremony, because the venue did not have an onsite coordinator.
