We paid a premium for that location and planned the evening around it. When we arrived, a manager informed us that the entire section had been closed and we would be reseated farther back. No prior notice had been given by email, phone, or the ticketing platform. For a family night that had been scheduled and paid for well in advance, being moved from the seats we bought to a noticeably inferior location felt like a bait & switch. Front row tickets are not interchangeable with mid house seats; the difference in proximity, sightlines, and energy for a high-energy tribute show is substantial. The responsible course would have been to contact ticket holders days earlier, offer comparable or upgraded seats, or provide a partial refund or credit. None of that occurred.

Presently, the Dome sits majestically on the south Houston plains as a monument to Houston sports past. And frankly, the birth of Sports in the city. Like Plymouth Rock or the Gateway Arch, it represents the beginning of greatness in the now fourth largest city in the United States. The authorities can't bear to bring it down nor should they. It's our history. Lives. It sits there in the shadow of the current Houston football stadium just like a withering parent sits watching his or her son or daughter dominate their industry. It was the birth of greatness in sports. Born in 1965, it represented everything right with the City of Houston. Forward thinking. Innovative. Air Conditioned. It set the tone for what the city would thrive on for the next half century and beyond. She hasn't seen a competitive athletic event or meaningful show in 20 years. As technology moved forward, much like our aging parents stuck to landlines and paper bills in the mail, she didn't want to let go of her old-world charm. To the point where, it just was what it was. Now we must let her reign over our city in her authority. We owe too much. It was home to Houston's sports teams: The Houston Astros. The Houston Oilers. The Houston Gamblers. The Houston Cougars. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The people and historic events the Astrodome witnessed is a who's who of 20th Century American culture. Muhammed Ali. Elvis Presley. Michael Jordan. Hank Aaron. From watching the Oilers, Astros, circus and the stock show it was an awesome place for a kid. A story came across my phone talking about what will become of that event center. Says there will be an event center there, hotel, and the common ideas people have for a place like that. It's to bad it can't be converted into a new wonder of the world. My idea would be the largest green house/lab in the world that college ag programs could get a use of as well as providing essential supply and knowledge for our farms. It can be used to manufacture seed for farms, fertilizer, etc. Also rains a lot in Houston so It could have indoor and outdoor fish farms. It really could be a viable resource build for our countries food security as well as for the ag students and studies for tomorrows generation. Well at the end, I'm glad it's staying up right and not turning into a land fill of boxes and forgot storage.

I was really looking forward to Houston's FIFA Fan Festival and expected to visit multiple times…read moreduring the World Cup. With Houston hosting matches, I imagined fans from around the world chanting, singing, and creating an unforgettable atmosphere. Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience. The biggest disappointment was the lack of energy. People wore jerseys representing their teams, but there was very little cheering or interaction. Surprisingly, the festival seemed to feature more NASA exhibits than World Cup exhibits. As an engineer, I enjoy anything related to space, but it felt out of place at a FIFA Fan Festival. Note the Houston Hall was the best place to watch the matches because it was indoors with air conditioning. There were long lines throughout the venue--for entry, exhibits, and giveaways. The Bank of America bracelet booth regularly had 30+ minute waits, and I was shocked to later see those free bracelets listed on Facebook Marketplace for over $100. Food and drinks were also expensive ($8 for a Coke and $6 for bottled water), and most food trucks didn't display prices, so you had to wait in line just to ask. Similarly, prices weren't listed on the football jerseys so you had to keep going to the check counter to ask how much; pretty annoying! On the plus side, you can bring an empty clear water bottle (remove the label) and refill it at the free water stations. They also provide complimentary sunscreen, which was a thoughtful touch. I also want to recognize the staff and volunteers, who did a great job keeping things running smoothly. Many were friendly, helpful, and happy to answer questions throughout the day. If you plan to visit, arrive early, especially for popular matches, as capacity is limited. I also recommend parking at the Harrisburg Metro Garage for just $1 after validating a METRORail ticket, then taking the train two stops to the festival. It's much cheaper than parking nearby. I'm glad I went once to experience it, but I wouldn't go back and don't recommend. I'd much rather enjoy the matches at home with air conditioning and an ice-cold beer in my hand. More than anything, I wish the festival had embraced the passion and culture of the World Cup. Instead of feeling like one of the world's biggest sporting events was taking place just minutes away, it felt surprisingly dull.

It's also very family-friendly, but I saw too many babies (like, infants) and toddlers looking miserably hot. Shout out to the volunteers. Can't believe FIFA isn't paying people for their service. They're making record profits. SMH.

I arrived at 7, was sweating by 7:02, and by 8 had achieved a state of moisture normally reserved for produce misters. The breeze arrived once. Everyone cheered. It did not return. Sound-wise: I could confirm that music was happening. Beyond that I'd need a lawyer. From where I stood it was mostly bass and rumor. The guy next to me insisted they played my favorite song. I'll take his word for it. Beer was $16 and served in a cup engineered to become warm faster than physically possible. The line for it moved with the urgency of a DMV that had recently been informed of layoffs. I made a friend in that line. We've since lost touch, but we shared something. Parking exists in the same sense that Bigfoot does -- people claim to have found it, no photos survive. I parked in what I believe was another zip code and did a small pilgrimage back. Two stars for the vibes, minus one for the vibes, minus another for the field. One star.

As a self-proclaimed music geek, White Oak Music Hall, or WOMH, has been among the live…read moreentertainment venues in Houston that I've wanted to visit for quite some time--nearly a decade since it opened. The itch was finally scratched last night when I went to watch my friend Ken and his band, Zenjii, perform there to celebrate the release of their latest single, "Ashes" (check it out on the platform where you stream your favorite music!). It's safe to say that WOMH met my expectations. It surprised me that it sits just right next to the North Freeway. When a person approaches it at first, it appears quite small, but I assure you it's anything but. Zenjii's show was in the upstairs performance room on WOMH's second floor. Beforehand, Ken and I went out to the outdoor area the place is very well known for. I joked with him how given the excessive heat, I was glad they were performing inside. But I'm certain on a day when the weather is Goldilocks, or just right, The Lawn -- as it's officially called -- is ideal for a concert. Behind the stage was the actual namesake, White Oak Bayou. To get a better view of the Houston skyline that's prominently featured in lots of pictures from WOMH, a visitor has to ascend to the second floor balcony. Because there was barely a cloud in the sky, I was able to see what I believe is the most beautiful collection of skyscrapers in the world from that vantage point. It is definitely worth a look at night too. The room definitely accommodated Zenjii and the acts that went on before it. Not only was the room big enough to handle the crowd size, but the acoustics and lighting were excellent. The bar inside was exceptionally staffed by a woman whose name I stupidly forgot to get. Though she gave me complimentary water and Diet Coke, I still left her a tip for her troubles. You're probably wondering why the review has four stars. Well, even though the heat index outside was undoubtedly beyond 100 Fahrenheit, I could've sworn the venue had the AC on at a little below 60. It was so cold in the room that I left with a slight runny nose. That, however, doesn't take away from how impressed I am with WOMH.
