Nearby is Folklore Bookshop, and I hope they are benefitting from the crowds because my visit left a lasting impression that I still recall fondly. Yes, there's an amazing selection of books and cute gifts. Yes, it's quaint and cozy. There's a dog (or there was that day). Also a roaring fireplace and an area to gather or read or both - but that's just a short list of what makes this place special. As you are browsing the shelves, you'll see notecards handwritten by staff with an overview of a book they've read and enjoyed shared in the most relatable way. Their passion for reading really comes through here and that is everything!!! Props to Quinn for including a spooky meter where applicable. Everyone I interacted with was so friendly and helpful, and you can just feel that they loved being there as much as I did. Plus - free bookmark with purchase! Luckily it wasn't too hot out, so the car was comfortable as the windows were all open. Staff at the ticket booth and on the train were friendly. The train was packed and the ride itself was no more than an hour and a half total. It was cool to see the trains but I'm not sure that I would do it again. They did have an old time "sheriff" on board who cracked a few jokes. They also had folks playing the fiddle who played some classic songs and took requests on the way back. Primarily though you are on board to enjoy the ride. Their themed rides may be a little more fun depending on what you're into. If you want to kill an hour or two, this will fill your time. They do have restrooms and a small gift shop where you check in before you board.

Heirloom is tucked away at The Shops at Riverwoods .... waaaaaay back past all the big restaurants and clothing stores, wedged between a rare bookstore and an antique/consignment shop. If I wasn't going to the store on purpose, I would've missed it. Boy, I'm glad I didn't! To me, the best parts are the books and the "gifts". By "gifts" I mean things like reproductions of old-timey globes, maps, advertisements, and other things for the days of yore. I mean Pendleton-brand 100% wool "motor robes" -- essentially a throw blanket that can be rolled up, belted in, and it has a strap for carrying it wherever life or nature takes you. I mean quilts with maps, countries, or constellations on them. I mean organic facial creams, bath salts and body oils from places like Mullein and Sparrow. I mean "toys for kids" that are really retro things that the parents will love as much (and probably more) than the kids will. As for their books, you'll find classics, history, nature, and kids books. They've even got "Goodnight Moon" in French. Bonsoir Lune! The back half of the store is their meat-and-potatoes sales wise, with fancy, classy art and a lot of religiousy and Mormony things. All nightgown styles I tried had a very frumpy effect, rather than vintage or feminine. I reached out to customer service twice to see if there was anything I could do on my end to take some of the edge off of the 50 dollar sunk cost. I didn't get a response. I understand this is their policy, but the whole thing was incredibly frustrating. I had spent months eyeing these nightgowns as I have tried to find cotton styles, and have found it difficult, so I took a shot. Would never shop here again.
