Omg this place is UNBELIEVABLY AMAZING! I can't even tell you how knocked off my rocker I was, but I'll try! I live in Golden Hill, and I wanted to go to a restaurant that I could walk to. I had been shopping at Target earlier in the day, and saw the cute, restaurant as I was leaving. I didn't have any expectations at all, I was just hungry and craving something meaty. As my boyfriend and I walked in, a hostess/waitress/cool vibes kinda gal named Emily greeted us and told us to sit wherever we'd like. It's almost December, so the restaurant was decorated so magically, with lights and Christmas decorations everywhere. We picked a table with a view of a TV, and a movie from 1985 (Teen Wolf, starring Michael J Fox) was playing as we sat down. We looked at our menus, but everything sounded delicious. I always like to ask recommendations from the server, because they usually know best. Emily came through and gave us the cocktail list rundown. She said that the Mr. Robinson is the best because it's peanut butter-infused, and has a nice cucumber refreshing taste on top of that (weird flex but okay)...but it was so creamy and refreshing, and one drink had me feeling the right kind of buzzed! Definitely recommend that and props to Emily! Once it came down to order the food, Emily suggested the Fernside burger and OMG, I have to take a moment of silence for how magnificent it was. The burger was like an upscale, top of the line In-N-Out double double. The Fernside sauce is like an elegant animal sauce, and the waffle fries were so crispy and golden brown. Everything worked together, and gave us the best burger we've had in a while. We went to try Station burger in South Park, but this burger blew theirs out of the water! As if the food couldn't get any better, I asked for a side of ranch and it tasted like it was rosemary-infused. I asked Emily about the ranch and she said it was HOMEMADE, and the chefs put all kind of herbs in it with their SECRET RECIPE! How amazing is that?? I usually put ranch on mostly everything, so you can say I'm somewhat of a ranch connoisseur. Came here with some out-of-town friends for Happy Hour drinks and apps. I got their peach sour beer, smashed potatoes, and an order of the Crusty Cauliflower. Our server, Essence, was awesome, but the food was pretty average. The cauliflower lacked taste and the sauce it came with did not compliment the seasoning used. I was expecting a more buffalo-tasting dipping sauce, but the sauce that was on the side was a weird mixture of buffalo and random spices. The potatoes were pretty good, but it felt like I could've prepared the same quality dish at home. Honestly, nothing about this place really wowed me. I'd probably only come back for drinks during Happy Hour, as this establishment truly is just average. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 3 was simply because Essence was phenomenal. read more

Hubby and I came here today for a late lunch and ended up having a super delicious brunch/lunch meal!!! Everything was excellent!! We split the burger/potatoes and the cornbread French toast...which had this amazing home made whip cream component on it and berries, soo good. Hubby said the burger has a style like In and Out and it did, just that perfect burger taste with the sauce. And loved that the prices were reasonable $10-$12 a plate and not $18+ a plate. There's potential here, definitely... But they've got a little ways to go. Place looks cool. Though I miss how it was mostly booths when South Park Abbey. I guess they were going for a different look and more capacity. Girlfriend was turned off by the sparce, run-down looking exterior. I didn't care and actually thought it looked kinda cool. Not sure if they plan to leave it that way. Interesting contrast with the nice, modern interior. Anyway, enough about that shit! Good beer selection. Not vast like SPA was, but solid variety and good selections. Cocktails... Don't know. Didn't pay much attention. Chicken wings: tough because SPA was kinda known for their dirty wings... And, alas, they were sorely missed. Habanero passion fruit. Was stoked on the claimed flavor, but they were just kinda sweet. Barely spicy. Didn't really taste passion fruit. I think the glaze they used was too thin/watery. And they were undercooked. Rather pink, and definitely not crispy the way you'd want. 2/5 Burger: It was pretty damn good. Smash style burger and they got it right. 4/5 The goddamn flies. Yes, it was hot for October, but this is SD. If they swarm like that when it's hot... Ya gotta try and do something about it. I'll perhaps check in on this place a little latrt. Hopefully they dial in their wings. Maybe get the recipe from Mama, because now my two favorite wing places in SD are now permanently closed. read more

Shockingly poor value for money. Ordered a Chopped Salad with added halloumi only to find out that Fernside thinks it's reasonable to charge $4 for a SINGLE slice. I really wanted to like this place and, upon seeing they serve halloumi at all, was convinced it would become a staple in my weekly dining rota. But seriously, $4 for a sorry little halloumi chunk is a piss-take. You can get an 8-slice block for $5.50 at any Trader Joe's or Aldi's so, Fernside, please fire your supplier and stop gouging your customers. read more

Popped in here for lunch with my husband today. Although it's not the Abbey we once loved we had a good experience. Husband got a michelada and I got a strawberry sherry cocktail (forgot the name). He got the Fernside burger and I got the half pounder brisket one. We both enjoyed the food and drinks. Service was fast, but quality. When we ordered we did ask for wings but we honestly all spaced on it and the waiter (who btw was taking care of everyone well!) took 20% off our bill which was very unexpected but very appreciated. We tipped him on the original bill amount bc honestly it wasn't a huge deal and we were so full there was no way we could finish. For the price it was generous portions. Only 2 cons. We had these two flies that kept bothering us so I think it'd be wise to put fans above the garage and entry door. The only other con and believe me, I had to really reach to say it's a con is that my drink had more ice than I think was necessary. Other than that seriously great experience. I wish I could remember the waiters name. He had curly brown hair, younger guy if he was older than 35 I'd be shocked. Anyways great and attentive server. We will be back. read more

Woah! Solid experience at this amazing neighborhood spot. Great food, killer cocktails, amazing service, and comfortable vibe. Started with the cauliflower which was breaded with cornmeal and an sweet/spicy buffalo sauce. Then I had the All that Pizzaz, the take on the New Orleans classic, and my fiancé had the fried chicken. AMAZING! Was in San Diego for a couple of days and the bf and I hit up this spot meeting with a large group. The drinks are reasonably priced and made very well! The food is a must have (especially after a couple drinks) the chicken burger was delicious and very tender. Or you can order some nacho fries and have enough to feed almost everyone in your group. The ingredients are top tier and the service is decent. Great atmosphere in South Park. I live less than a block away which makes this place an awesome get away for a relaxed evening.

The wifey and I stopped by here earlier this week with our son after picking him up from school. It was unexpected and just on the fly. We had the time and had been wanting to check it out since it re-opened. We were 1 of maybe 6 or 7 tables it was about 5 in the afternoon and it seemed to be really slow so we thought perfect timing, especially with our 2 year old. We sat down ordered our food and drinks only to be very disappointed with the food. We ordered the "crusty cauliflower" and it was literally tasteless and not crunchy at all. It's texture and taste felt like it was just reheated from the day before. My wife had the Fernside burger which was pretty good minus the waffle fries that were cold and soggy. I had the fish and chips which was $18 for only 2 pieces of fish that were not seasoned at all. I had to douse it in the tarter sauce or dip that came with the plate to give it some flavor so that I could eat it. Our server, to top it off, was very inattentive. The table behind us had to wave him over and ask for their salads that they never got, he forgot to bring us ketchup after I had asked him and by the time he remembered we had finished our food. When we asked for the bill I guess it's restaurant procedure to run the card on a wireless machine he had on him before I even knew the total. Idk if I'm old school and prefer a receipt or to see the total at the very least, but I thought that was weird. On another note the restaurant has a really cool vibe and open concept that allows you to people watch and enjoy the South Park neighborhood vibe. I just wish we had a better experience since we live so close to the place. read more

We love the food and drinks here. We've been here 4 times now. Wanting to give the service another chance. But unfortunately three times in a row we've had poor service. Which is SUCH a shame because the wedge salad is probably the best in San Diego. However, the service is so slow. The servers are pretty inattentive. We ordered a drink and 40 minutes later, it finally came. So we went to the bar to order a second because we didn't get any attention for another 40 minutes. We had the pleasure of testing out this place on their very first night!!! We brought our kids (4yrs and 2yrs). We were sat at the perfect booth, it trapped the kids in perfectly without making them feel trapped (haha) there is a big glass window/siding so my 2yr old could wave at all the people walking by while we ate. We ordered cocktails at the bar before we sat down, I had the Pointy Boots, it was SO delicious! I tried everyone else's drinks as well and they were all so good, but I can't remember the names, I think mine was my favorite. We were starving so we ordered a lot! The trail mix has gummy bears in it!!!!! The nachos fries were gone in like 3 seconds between us and the crazy kids, the sweet potato rolled tacos were so good, a teeny tiny bit of spicy to them, which we all loved, but was too much for my sensitive princess 4 yr old daughter. I'm not sure if they have a kids menu or not, my kids prefer to order from the real menu. Not sure if they are going for a kid friendly restaurant but we felt extremely welcome and cared for with our monsters in tow. Housemade pickles were great! And my burger was perfection! We live in north county but we come to South Park/north park area a lot and we will definitely be back. I Seriously can't wait for their bunch!!!!
