In 2021 a new playground was added to the park. The playground was built in direct cooperation with the manufacturer and the community so they could save money by not having to hire an architect. The park was designed with community input and includes swings and slides, colorful jungle gyms, a mini rock climbing wall, and a water misting station to cool down. For bigger kids, there is a pavilion and tennis and basketball courts. There is also a covered pavilion, walking path,, and picnic tables. The biggest drawback to this park is lack of parking. The park was filled with people when I visited but with not enough parking it seems like the city wants it only to be used by neighborhood residents. The city did a great job on Jaycee Park and it seems a shame that people who would have to drive over can't use it.

He must have quite the sense of humor to name his daughter Merrie. Not so funny was the fact that Merrie passed away at the age of 15 in 1969 and her father named the park in her honor. In 2014 the city of Miami discovered toxic metals at the park and shut it down for the next 2 years. Clean up of the park cost over a million dollars. Today the park is open and is a popular destination for the people who live in the neighborhood. The park has giant banyan trees and a large open area perfect for play. Other park amenities include an exercise path, picnic tables, and a playground. On the evening I visited people were having a party, kids were playing on the playground, and dogs were running across the lawn. This is a beautiful spot for the community of Coral Gables to gather.

The Kendall Hammocks Optimist Club dedicated Wild Lime Park to Al Engle who spent many hours volunteering in youth sports. This lovely park has a number of amenities to appeal to the community. These include a picnic pavilion, shade covered fitness zone with exercise equipment, a large shade covered playground, paved walkways, and lighted soccer field where a youth soccer league meets. During my visits a child was learning to ride a bike on the pathway, more kids were enjoying the playground, and a birthday party was being set up in the pavilion. The charming Wild Lim Park provides a peaceful, natural setting with well maintained landscaping. This park an ideal place for those looking to relax or enjoy some outdoor activities.

Coral Pine Park is a charming and well kept 9-acre park in Pinecrest. It was a former Miami-Dade County park before being transferred to Pinecrest in 1998. Park amenities include a recreation center with an Everglades mural, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, an all-purpose field, and a shade covered playground. In addition to all of the activities in the park, Coral Pine Park is also a pineland preserve. Pineland is a globally endangered ecosystem. It is only located in south Miami, the Keys, and parts of the Bahamas. Pineland once covered 180,000 acres or 12 percent of Miami but by the time Miami turned 100 in 1996, less than 2 percent remained. Today only fragments of the Pineland remain. Pinelands contain 225 species of native plants, 20 percent of which are found nowhere else in the world. Five of the plant species are listed as federally endangered.

This is a 14.5 acre park located in Miami across from Killian High School named in honor of Ronald…read moreRay Ehmann (1940-1975), a beloved coach of the Killian Cougars before his life ended tragically in a car accident at the age of only 34. Coach Ehmann was known for his love of sports, physical fitness, and the out doors. At Killian high school he was a biology and physical education teacher before taking over the P.E. Department. He championed his students and before his passing he accompanied six of Killian's most accomplished athletes to compete nationally in the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test. A unique feature of this park is that it has a walking trail through seven acres of a preserved pine rockland habitat which is only found on the limestone terrain in south Florida and the Bahamas. The only trees that live in this habitat are slash pines along with an understory of palms, shrubs, herbs. Pine rockland used to cover 180,000 acres of Miami Dad County but after development, only two percent are left in public parks and preserves. During my walk through the preserve I spotted many Peter's rock agama lizards, an invasive species from Africa. They were first introduced to Florida in 1976 from the pet trade. Adult males have distinctive red heads and black bodies and can grow up to a foot long. Their range has been expanding and they are now found as far north as Jacksonville and as far south as Big Pine Key. Unfortunately they like to feast on Florida's endangered butterfly species like the Florida Leafwing and the gray Bartram's Hairstreak which also live in the pine rocklands. Scientists are currently studying the effect on the environment of these lizards and I was able to file an online report of my observations with the University of Georgia who is recording invasive species sightings. In addition to the nature trail park amenities include a basketball court, soccer field, softball field, bike path, quiet resting place, playground, outdoor fitness equipment, recreation center, tennis center and six lighted tennis courts. Winter, spring, and summer camps are offered in the park along with tennis lessons. This park is a respite of nature in urban Miami. Come out and play, exercise, bird watch, or just to enjoy nature. The park is open every day from sunrise until sunset.

It is a great place to relax, enjoy the weather, play with the dog, let the kids climb and slide, have a picnic, or toss the frisbee. Being a block off of Red Road, you'd think there would be heavy traffic or loud truck noise all day long, but with the addition of the Publix between the park and 57th, it has a much more closed off, protected, and intimate feel to it. There is ample parking, and a few places for the kids to play and explore the freedom of running in a large green space. With benches and trees, there is more than enough of an area for adults to rest, soak up the sun, or enjoy an afternoon of peaceful nature while being steps from the reality of a major city. If you are looking for a little escape from the grind, slip your shoes off, slap your shades on, and let your toes feel the soft grass on your feet while you reconnect with the gentle beauty of peaceful relaxation at Cooper Park.

"Doug" Barnes who created the Parks and Recreation Department for Miami Dade County. At 27.7 acres Gerry Curtis Park has a lot of recreational space. The newly renovated facilities host a ton of fun activities which makes it the perfect place to unplug, get active, and have a great time. From after school activities to seasonal camps to sports, this park has basketball, football, baseball, racquetball, tennis, swimming, boating, biking, and more. Curtis Park has an older recreation center that offers after school programs, youth and teen camps and programs, and computers. The Department of Parks has announced the design plans of the new Curtis Park Community Center. The new 8,000 square foot building will have a large recreation room, a computer lab, classrooms, administration buildings, kitchen, art room, fitness room, restrooms, and outdoor pavilion. The new building will be a key component of bringing the community together. Other Curtis Park amenities include a basket ball court, baseball field, boat ramp, restrooms, picnic tables, playground, and a pool where you can get swim lessons. The park's expansive grounds ensure there's something for everyone to enjoy. Thi park is open to the public and it is kept in top shape. their tennis courts were recently painted and fixed. The nets are in perfect condition and they even keep it lighted at night at no charge. They have a small kid area where they can play and swing. Overall its a small park but they have tennis and racquetball and it is completely open. I have been coming lately here and just picking up random tennis games when my official partner cant make it. They have a water fountain by the courts which offers really cold water. Reminds me of the ones at hospitals or science building, for some weird reason those always have freezing water. A little steps away there is a vending machine where you can help yourself to some cool sodas. For those tennis players take advantage of the park, there are even benches to sit and put your tennis gears.
