As a self proclaimed plant fanatic and parent to 40+ indoor succulents, money trees, pileas, etc., I have been fan-girling over Fern for quite some time now. Due to a quick weekend trip to Cincinnati, I was finally able to visit and spend some money at this amazing plant haven, and honestly, it may have been my favorite part of the trip. The moment you walk through their doors you're invited to explore a modern oasis full of beautifully crafted ceramic pots, plants of all kinds, friendly humans, and plant themed art. If you're a plant nerd like myself, run (don't walk) here! It took me forever to figure out what I wanted to take home, but once I narrowed it down and my friend and the staff confirmed, I was ready to whip out my credit card. I ended up being extremely pleased with my pot + plant selection. I went with one of their chalky looking terracotta pots (which I LOVE) and a medium sized snake plant. For just under fifty bucks, I got an excellent addition to my plant-fam. Pro tip - They'll pot it for you in-store so it's ready to go when you get home. A couple of weeks ago my Mr took me to the second location in Walnut Hills and was pretty impressed. For years I wanted to drop by the College Hill location. Finally was able to on a Saturday afternoon. They are pet friendly so we were able to bring our Frenchie Billy. I was amazed with their selection of plants! When you walk in you see beautiful succulents and cacti in the front followed by herbs. I walked around the corner and noticed a huge fiddle fag! Gorgeous! Their store is in the garage so when they open up the door, you can feel the breeze coming in! They have pots, soil, gift ideas, plant accessories and more. Plants for everyone. Pothos, Calathea, air plants, philodendron, Fittonias, Peperomias, and more! It's very organize, plants looks healthy, pricing reasonable and the staff is ready to help you if you have questions. I ended up getting a Crispy Wave Fern and splurged on a care book (Leaf Supply). My Mr bought me two 4 inch cacti and a Peperomia Rosso. The experience was great. I love Fern. I had been watching this business on Instagram. They have a beautiful, family feeling kind of shop. Bright and welcoming. They were having a repotting event. I had to work and thought I may miss the cut off time. I contacted them and they said no problem, they would assist even if I was a little late. I made it in time. My plant was huge and on her last leg. I just didn't know how to help her. They were knowledgeable and my plant is doing well. The event was very crowded and you can tell people love this place. I stopped in a week later to buy a plant. I asked for help, I needed a plant that would be easier than others to care for. See pictures. I love this plant. I love the idea of a plant shop in my College Hill neighborhood, so I just had to check this one out. I love the location -- a refurbished gas station, where they can open up the garage door and basically become a patio in warm weather. And I disagree with a previous Yelp post -- this is not a bad neighborhood -- it's now full of trendy shops, new restaurants, a microbrewery, and a barbershop and hair salons. The ongoing renovation & renewal has kept the character of the neighborhood while bring in new trendy business. But back to this boutique plant shop: The interior was relaxed and comfortable, and the plants were arranged beautifully. The prices were fair market value, which made them affordable for me. The staff there was friendly and relaxed, and we had a good low-key conversation while I perused the plants. I ended up buying two healthy "starter plants." She gave good instructions, regarding the unique qualities of my purchase, including how to water them. I wish they had a larger variety of plants, but overall it was a pleasant store that I'll return back to often. read more

This is where hipsters buy their plants. Super cute...check. Great customer service...check. Overpriced plants and pots...check. It's not in the best neighborhood but is an old garage transformed into a boutique plant shop complete with musky soy based candles of all sorts, watering cans, wall plants, hanging plants, huge plants, succulents, and even a very comfy couch in case you want to have a quick read of any of the gardening books in the store. A medium sized terra-cotta pot was like $25 and another really cool copper pot with a stand was around $30 if I'm not mistaken. The young lady was working was very kind in giving me some tups on how to not kill my basil and the best watering schedule for succulents. My friend bought a huge plant and she helped us wrap it to make the transportation of it safer. Cute spot and definitely better selection of unique pots than you will find at Home Depot but TJ Maxx might have some similar alternatives. read more

I have something to confess... until this weekend, I had never been to Fern (gasp!). When I had a plant-obsessed friend coming into town (who was already familiar with them), I knew we needed to pay a visit. Fern is located in the College Hill neighborhood, just a short drive from Northside on Hamilton avenue. The shop is MADE for instagram with the natural lighting and well-placed greenery throughout. For being such a boutique shop, I thought the prices were pretty reasonable. Sure, there's some things you could likely find cheaper elsewhere, but the small shop made the process feel super easy to ask lots of great questions and help you be a better plant parent. I really loved their terracotta pots and may need to take a trip back soon to score some great greenery for my house! read more

Last night I took a wreath making class at Fern. The workshop was well thought out and user friendly and the hospitality was excellent. We were greeted with offers of tea and delicious meats and cheeses from Rhined were on hand. After a short intro by Una Florals, and an explanation of the materials on hand, we were set loose to create our wreaths. Though I didn't buy anything in the shop, I did peruse the wares and there were tons of gorgeous pots, planters, and small gifts such as lux candles and unique journals. If you take a workshop you get 20% off your purchase at that time. I'll definitely be checking back to see what other classes they'll be offering. For me it it was a bit far for an evening class but it was a fun outing and now I have a lovely, tasteful but spunky wreath to hang for the holidays and beyond! read more

Love this cute little plant shop! Jessica was working and was EXTREMELY helpful and knowledgeable about every plant in the shop. They have a large variety of plants from succulents, Ivy's, cactuses, airplants, etc. I bought a Hindu rope plant for $8 and some Spanish moss for $10. Pricing is higher than a box store like Home Depot but not as bad as some other individual plant stores. Wish the place was closer, but there is plenty of parking! read more

Update to original 5/5 rating, which is being changed to a 2/5 after getting used to them and seeing other Cincinnati plant stores (obviously Home Depot/Lowe's excluded). When first coming to the shop, (September 2018) it certainly looks like that white cool modern shop... with some plants. If you are just starting out in plants, I personally would not recommend this store unless it's a pothos or snake plant (they always have snake plants) HOWEVER: the last couple plants I've bought from them had gnats fly out of them. Not knowing at the time that it would cause the gnats to fly to all of my other plants in my home, I bought them. That one was on me. first red flag. Second red flag- not always responsive to questions, and from experience, theres only one friendly person (unless you're buying a load of plants of course) thats truly genuinely nice and helpful. I think her name is Jessica.. I'd like to think I'm a pretty nice and open, even bubbly person... just didn't get a nice and welcoming vibe from the store, when other stores they'll say hey! Welcome in! and ask if I have any plant questions and are otherwise engaging with you. There have been times when I'm in fern and they literally don't say a single word to me until I'm checking out and they've almost seemed unimpressed by my purchases and still don't have any sense of customer service lol I thought people around plants would be nicer I guess?? Lol third red flag: their plants are more pricy here. I can find the same plant at AJ Rahn Greenhouses (about 10 minutes away in northside) for almost half the price; it's ridiculous. Fourth red flag: while their store is "pretty" it seems less focused on plants and more focused on their other products, such as homemade premium candles and planters. While smelling pretty, a small candle costs $30! You can go to target and find the same smell for $10!! Their planters also seem to be ranged between $25-50 each. Once again, while pretty- you can find something similar somewhere else less expensive. I'd say overall, a cool shop yeah. But I think it depends on who is working/managing that day, and the amount of plants they have (I think they restock mid week) is typically lower compared to other stores in the area. Be sure to look over your plant VERY carefully for any sort of bugs just to be safe (mine could have just been a bad batch, who the hell knows), I have stopped buying from them since. If you're looking for a true plant store/nursery my suggestions would be AJ Rahn Greenhouses where they have almost every plant in almost any size you want, and The Budding Florist near Findlay market. The Budding Florist (Ellie is the owner (that's how nice she is, I know her by name now)) used to work for AJ Rahn so she has the plant knowledge and she is SO NICE. EVERY. TIME. I've had half hour convos with her over plants and she's always welcoming, even her associates that work for her. They too, are knowledgeable about plants and can answer almost all of my plant questions unless it's a weird spot on a leaf that they'd need to see a picture of. Overall, if your idea of a good plant store (like me) is a LARGE amount of plants and welcoming/helpful service, unfortunately this is not the store for you. read more

I recently made a few purchases from fern and I've been super impressed with the quality of the plants. Before social distancing I picked up a small Hoya australis and the pricing was consistent with what you would pay at other shops or online for this plant. I've had zero problems with the plant and it's grown like crazy since purchasing. Recently, I made a small purchase with their new social distancing procedures (order online & pickup in store) and my plants again came in excellent condition. They had a wide selection of plants and pots for comparable prices to other plant stores or greenhouses and my plants were super healthy again. I am a proud plant lady (plant lady is the new cat lady!). I have succulents, house plants, etc in basically every window in my house, and I just can't get enough of them. If I want something truly SPECIAL, one of a kind, and beautiful for my plant collection, I head to Fern. Fern is by far the prettiest, most high end plant store in Cincinnati. They have local, hand made pottery, hanging planters, brass and copper watering cans, wall art, and a ton of perfectly curated succulents, cacti, and house plants. Yes, it is pricey, but the prices are fair in my opinion for the quality and uniqueness of these pieces. Don't buy your stuff at big box stores! Buy them local, at Fern. TREAT YO SELF. Fern is a good options for mature plants. I found them via Instagram, and wanted to check out their store. They have a great variety of plants and the staff there seemed quite knowledgeable about their options. We showed up on a rainy day and the store was pretty much empty. So we spent time looking around and asking questions about what plants were best for our house and open rooms. The woman working helped us, explained how quickly the plants grow. So overall service is A+. What has me not over the moon about this place is simply the cost, though to be honest, my only really comparison is Lowe's. Unless we ended up with a small plant that was brand new, we were looking at hundred of dollars for the plants. It seemed over priced to me, but I am also not the one who had to grow the plants. read more

TL:DR: plant stock varies week to week, cool space and plants, friendly staff, don't go there expecting dirt cheap plants and you'll enjoy the experience. Fern is a very stylish, upscale boutique for house plants and home goods. I want to say that up front because some people may go there just looking for a plant and a cheap cute pot for your plants, and if that is your goal you may be better of going to a big box store or another nursery. The pots are typically made by American artists and therefore the price reflects that. For me, I am not in a place to spend much on pots so I definitely don't hold that against them and applaud them for selling artisan goods rather than mass produced items. As far as plants go, I have had good luck so far with a small monstera I purchased a few months ago (he got his first split leaf!!). I only bought one plant because their plants tend to skew a little more expensive than I can afford, but what is great is that the sell small versions of some popular plants that are reasonably priced, allowing for less of a commitment. The space is not as large as many garden centers, so it varies as to what they have available. The quality of the plants in stock have been high in my experience, but bear in mind I have only gotten 4 so far. I have seen some reviews stating the staff isnt always friendly or helpful, but I have always enjoyed my experience with them. read more

Their plants are darling - unique and beautiful specimens that have been given the best of care. The fiddle leaf fern I bought from them at 2' tall is now an amazing towering 6' plant. The shop is very cute and boutique-like with a lot of natural light, modern planters, books, and kits. You can tell that a lot of love and care went into designing it. My experience with the hospitality and friendliness of the staff, however, has been disappointing and I have given them multiple opportunities to do better. The first time I visited was during one of their sales, and I picked out a cute little fern in a pot. I asked the saleslady how easy it was to care for, and she responded with, "If this isn't your first fern, then it probably isn't the one for you." Ouch. Seemed a little snooty of a response to me, but maybe I'm just overly sensitive. It was my first fern, but I was not about to admit it or admit defeat. I bought it. The fern did okay for the first couple of months, but then slowly, one stem at a time, the leaves started shriveling and turning brown. I called the store for help and left them a message, but unfortunately they never returned my call. The poor fern did die...slowly but surely...but I kept it for a year before I threw it away, but my pride wanted me to keep it longer. Forward to the next year during their sale, I excitedly bought a fiddle leaf fern and a beautiful pot at full price. My fiddle leaf has done extremely well thanks to tips on the internet (I polish its leaves with Mayo quarterly and water it every other week). Unfortunately, it has gotten a little too tall and hit the ceiling. I posted a picture of it on IG and tagged fern asking them for advice on how to trim it. Since calling them had proven to not work, this strategy seemed valid, and it'd be free advertising for them. Nope. No response. In summary, beautiful plants and good deals at their sales, but you are on your own if you run into issues and need advice. Their location is also a bit out of the way too without anything nearby. My favorite new plant store has been Gia and The Blooms. AJ Rahn is great too - my succulent bowl from them has thrived and the price was great. Happy gardening! read more

I first went to Fern in search of plants to fill my Woolly Pockets last fall. The proprietor was very kind and receptive. She took my information and let me know she'd be in touch with ideas and photos within a week. A few weeks later I reached back out after no contact. She told me she'd lost my contact info and was very apologetic. I decided to move forward. Stuff happens and I was in no rush. A couple of days later she texted me photos of beautiful plants and I gave my affirmative feedback. Again, weeks passed in silence. I texted her to ask if, perhaps, she was too busy or otherwise unavailable. She responded with a lukewarm apology and I was firm that I wanted to continue working with her, but only if service improved. She then made a more sincere apology and reconfirmed that she wanted to do the job. Over the following week, she sent me a few more photos of even more beautiful plants. I was pleased and immediately responded positively. That was two months ago. I sent her a text letting her know that I was going to be writing this review and that I regretted that it hadn't worked out. I love plants and I love to rave about local businesses, online and in person. It's just too bad I can't this time. read more

Place is incredible! The lady was very helpful, the plants were beautiful, and we left with about 12 new plant babies. It's a little far away, but I'd say it's worth the drive. Went to fern for their big sale and got there 15 minutes after it started and there was a huge line that took up the whole store and make it impossible to walk through the store. The sale was not well organized and we left right away due to this. The line should have wrapped around outside the store to ensure customers were able to browse plants. Fern is my favorite oasis in the city! It's one of my favorite places to find unique gifts, or to buy plants and amazing ceramics made by American artists. What I especially love about Fern is that it's never the same twice, as the owner carefully curates the selection and carries such original and well-made home goods.
