How have I not been here yet?! This place is a gardeners delight. Right off Grey Rd but can be hard to miss if you are not looking. I came in to get a bucket of stone for $2. They do have a $20 minimum so I ended up getting premium potting soil (not miracle grow). Took a look around and they also had tons of veggies, fruit and flowers along with house plants to pick from. A nice selection of garden tools as well. Ladies were nice and informative. Totally going back! Parking is right out front and easy to get in and out. read more

Love this greenhouse. It's a family run business and their selection of vegetable and herb plants is amazing. They must have at least 50 different varieties each of peppers and tomatoes. They also offer many varieties of other vegetables. The price is below what a big box store would charge and the plants are very healthy. The service is good. read more

We heard nothing but great things on Funke's Greenhouse. My Mr wanted to get more peppers and AJ Rahns was out until next springtime. So our next option was Funke's Wow! Talk about nostalgia and selection of veggies and herbs! Could you imagine what this place looks like come spring? Around August they still have a good selection to choose from. This is definitely a mom and pop nursery with a lot of history. Old school decor (especially the check out counter) lots of garden tips and pictures of their family. Warning before you shop. They do take credit card but it's a $20.00 minimum. We had no problem spending that! What stands out about this greenhouse is their selection. They carry the rarest plants. With each plant shows the history, health benefits, and where it came from. I like that they caption/label each one. Any veggie you can think of, they have it! We mainly came for the peppers. My Mr got two habaneros, King Naga, Rusalka's Revenge and The Stepping Razor. plants. All three except for the habaneros, from the super hot collection. The pricing is fair in my opinion. Besides veggies and herbs. They do sell some indoor plants, succulents, mulch, soil, garden accessories. Typical greenhouse stuff. I felt the place was organized. A bit older than most greenhouses but that's what makes it unique. It was definitely an interesting and good experience. Can't wait to see the full stock come springtime. read more

Eclectic place with every type of flower, herb, and vegetable imaginable. We were able to get the herb lovage here, which I've not been able to find anywhere else. I love how the owner's mom sits in the front, just smiling at everyone. read more

My lady and I have passed by this place countless times on our way to A.J. Rahn and were always curious to stop by. My personal curiosity peaked after speaking to a co-worker about the place and she described it was, "The dive bar of greenhouses." She also said they have lots of different peppers, which is perfect, because that's what I was looking for, though I already knew it's late in the season so selection may be sparse at best. Even with that said, I was VERY impressed with the selection I found, not just of peppers, but of everything. The place itself looks very old school, and pretty much like my co-worker said, dive bar-ish, if that makes sense. At first, I was a bit confused as to where to park. The parking area is just a grassy field out front with no real guidance of any kind. Still, I found a little spot to park nearby an old truck, and my lady and I ventured inside. In the greenhouse itself, there was lots of old school decor, and lots of signage shows the way to everything. Veggies, veggies, EVERWHERE!! If you can think of a veggie, they've got it! The one thing that was kinda tough to find was an employee if we happened to have any questions. Luckily, the place is relatively easy to traverse. Within seconds, we found what we were looking for, the peppers. They have lots of unique peppers that I've never seen or heard of before, and on each one, they give lots of details and information about them. I was fascinated with each one. I decided to get one king naga, one stepping razor, one Rusalka's revenge, and one orange habanero. However, when I got to the register, that's when I saw a sign thet read, "$20 minimum for credit card purchases." A minor thing really, and honestly, I used that as an excuse to tell my lady to grab another orange habanero. One can never have too many habaneros, right? I could definitely see coming back next time all their peppers are in season. I can only imagine the different ones they'll have then. Hopefully, they'll have some lovely Carolina reapers by then. Eh the place was empty as far as plants go. Couple interesting varieties of things that they did have like multiple carrots lettuce and basil. They have a $20minimum for cc. And i was 0.10 short and she was not pleasant on a solution other than buy more. I was ready to walk and she was fine with that, but my partner ended up paying out of his wallet. Wouldn't recommend. It seems like they are on the way to bankruptcy or closing anyhow. read more

Great selections of tomatoes, basil and peppers! Staff was very knowledgeable as well. This is my first year growing "edible" plants vs just flowers and indoor plants so I didn't know all the ins and outs. The lady working answered all my questions and even gave me some tips! This opinion is going to be mainly subjective, because I don't know very much about greenhouses, horticulture, or anything of that like. My knowledge amounts to knowing you need to water the plant, keep it in the sun, put plastic bags over shoots I'm the event of a freeze, and not to litter. Thankfully, the husband is much more adroit and this stuff and dragged me along on a Sunday afternoon to pick out potted herbs and seeds. I 'think', to the best of my scant knowledge, that it is well-kept and has a good variety. I can't say much about the prices either, because I don't know if they're market value or not. Prepare to be roasting hot in there, but don't drink water to cool off, because apparently either they (1) don't have a restroom open to the public, or (2) they're not willing to even let you use the employee bathroom, even if you're a paying customer (rubbish). We did both however, think that the staff severely lacked in any customer skills to speak of. But, similar to a drug dealer , we came for the herb, and not to make best friends. So, I guess mission accomplished. However, the almost surly rudeness of the employees, and one of the staff members refusal to allow me to use their restroom, - GOD FORBID, ARMAGEDDON MAY ENSUE IF HE PERMITTED ME THE PRECIOUS USE OF AN EMPLOYEE BATHROOM - even though there was clearly a restroom sign on the door, guarantee that I will not be accompanying my husband on one of his plant-buying excursions to this particular retailer. read more

I am so lucky to live so close by the this place. Every town needs a garden place like this. It has all sorts of hard to find veggies & plants. Don't judge the appearance of this place from the street. It is full of amazing treasures. I look forward to every May to shop here for my organic vegetable garden. read more

This small mom-and-pop operation has obviously had better days however the amazing selection of vegetables and herbs makes this place they must stop every season. It is best to get there early in the season as they tend to run out popular varieties and I'd also suggest going with a list or you will get lost. read more

Incredible selections of just about everything! Al is super knowledgeable and more than willing to give advise on how you can better ready your garden for the season with little tips and tricks he's learned on the way. Ive been to quite a few nurseries and greenhouses through the years buying seedlings to add to the garden and Funkes by far has the most variety of tomatoes and peppers that I've seen around! Each year I've seen new hot peppers there that I love planting and trying out. This place is an amazing spot to shop for people the novice and expert alike and the prices are perfect. I was shocked that this greenhouse had only two stars on yelp, and was relieved that it was only from one individual's experience. Funke's is absolutely amazing. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the owner, Al, is knowledgeable and has a degree in agriculture. They are always very kind to me when I visit. As for the plants, I was a little overwhelmed the first time I went to Funke's. I was expecting some regular tomato plants and a few herbs, flowers and trees, etc. What I got was too many plants to count and just about every variety of rare heirloom tomato and pepper I could have ever wanted. It took me a half hour to figure out which ones I wanted, as I had come for two of each and had an entire produce dedicated greenhouse to sift through (no lie! Sooooo many plants!) They have several other greenhouses for flowers, shrubs, supplies, etc. Their selection of bulbs (both flowering and edible) was also impressive. They had a large inventory of everything from purple opal basil to pickling cucumbers to freakin' grapes. All planted in pots and ready to put in you garden. Most of the tomatoes and peppers had fruit on them already. Here's my favorite part: less that $2 a plant for tomatoes and peppers!!! Needless to say I always go home with more plants than I set out to get! Who could resist? WARNING: This is a local, family operation. They prefer cash and are very relaxed, polite, regular people. (Last I checked, they were cash only, but this may have changed) All of the local gardeners who know what's up get their plants here. People even drive for hours to get here. If you're looking for quality, variety, and a laid-back low-maintenance atmosphere, visit after March when they're open after winter has passed. This place is aweosme if you are looking for a variety of tomatoes and peppers. Be prepared to be overwhelmed- my advice is to come in with a list from the website of what you want. Otherwise it's a free for all. The tomatoes and peppers are in alphabetical order, which really helps. They also had a large selection of herbs, veggies and other fruits to choose from. They even had raspberry, blackberry and grape bushes! A pretty basic selction of flowers as well .The owner was really nice and extremely helpful. I will absolutely be back again. read more

I was extremely impressed with the variety of vegetables and herbs. There were only two harder-to-find plants on my long list that Funke's didn't have and the owner readily referred me to a nursery she thought would (over an hour away in Indiana, so I wound up mail-ordering). I was even more impressed with the quality and health of the plants. Because I moved to town much later in the growing season, I had to pick up extras of certain plants at another nursery down the road... fastforward several months and all of Funke's plants were thriving, while the same type of plants from the other nursery were starting to flag. Some of the reviews mention the customer service. I thought the owner was helpful and knowledgeable. I enjoyed chatting with her while she rung up my purchases. There were certainly more chipper, smiling young faces at the nursery down the road... but they had never heard of half the plants I asked for, looked at me blankly when I asked for certain materials, and couldn't answer what I consider to be basic care questions... so I guess it depends whether you're looking for smiling and vapid, or competent and knowledgeable. If you are an avid gardener and want to explore the latest taastes in tomatoes and peppers, they have 207 varieties of tomato starts.... Way more than anyone else. All of these are neatly cateloged in alphabetical order with a large sign describing the flavor characteristics of eeach of the varieties and some signs even go into detail about the origin of the the particular tomato. Now this place does not have all the bells and whistles that the normal big greenhouses do, but their prices are significanly lower than any other place I have been and I have been to numerous places. If you really want to learn about tomatoes, and peppers, there is no place better! read more
