I thought I would check out Park Ridge Vacuum, which had some positive feedback from community members. It was the right choice; it exemplifies all that is great about small business: personal service from real knowledgable experts in their product. Rosemary is the owner of Park Ridge Vacuum, along with her husband, and they've been here for decades. They carry several different brands. I was interested in a canister vacuum so she introduced me to Miele (which I learned is pronounced me-la) and Sebo. Both are exceptional brands, made in Germany. I hadn't heard of the latter, but it was a nice machine. It also had some cool hiding spaces for the accessories! That one came with a 10 year warranty and a turbo head for the price, and though I did consider it, ultimately I chose the Miele. It was competitively priced and has a 5 year warranty. Here at PRV, at least, they send you home with a box of bags. I love that the attachments are hidden in the body of the machine. It's relatively quiet, easy to operate, and the "park" function for the vacuum is really convenient. And as an unexpected bonus, my toddler didn't cower from the vacuum; this time she insisted on using it. The shop does repairs, too. They have a small parking lot on the south side of the building. They are worth the visit to get great service and get a product that will reliably last you decades.

I first went to Menards and then Home Depot and they all said the same thing - we have the screen materials and tool kit but we don't do that type of work. In fact, Menards specifically mentioned Skokie Ace. So I came in and we got what I would consider a fair estimate for 8 of my screens. Now - could I have done this job myself? Of course, and I say that without flinching. The question was, do I sacrifice a Saturday afternoon to replace all of these screens? No, because I could be Yelping. I decided to pay for this work to buy some time. You may disagree but my Cost vs. Benefits analysis led to drop off all of my screens. I opted for aluminum this time and they were all expertly replaced in a matter of days. Excellent customer service by Carlos of Skokie Ace. I received two messages informing me to pick up my screens. In the words of Ace Frehley - your customer service has Shocked Me!!!

Before the snowstorm on 2/12/25, I was trying to get my snowblower working. I had filled it with gas, but it wouldn't start. So, I went to Ace to purchase a gas stabilizer as recommended in the snowblower instructions. The person who greeted me at the door asked what I was looking for, and after I explained, he asked how old the gas was. He then told me I was going about it all wrong and suggested I try TRUFUEL instead. Unfortunately, they were out of the size I needed. A snowblower tune-up at my house was going to cost $300, so I decided to visit a local auto parts store to find TRUFUEL.
