Adopting with Felines & Canines was an absolutely wonderful experience! For starters, they keep both the cat and dog areas very clean. They answered all my questions and made the whole process very enjoyable and easy going. They gave me all of my new kitty's health records/history, diet information, etc.. They also trimmed his nails and cleaned his ears and met with a vet on site before he came home with me as well. Overall, this was an awesome experience and I cannot recommend them more!

My daughter just adopted her beautiful healthy and very loving kitty from this amazing shelter. They take great care of the animals and are appropriately selective toward adopters. The facility is extremely clean and well taken care of and the workers are so friendly and genuinely caring. It was a very streamlined and timely process and she walked us through all health and microchip updates with their up to date tech (all forms were digital). I will be adopting my own kitty from them in the new year, I absolutely can't wait!

If you're hoping to adopt a cat in Chicago, I cannot recommend Felines & Canines more highly. I spent the better part of a month visiting shelters and adoption fairs in Chicago looking for a new friend, but it wasn't until I had an appointment at Felines & Canines that my gut told me I was in the right place. The cats and kittens there are so happy and comfortable; it was clear they were being nurtured with so much love and attention. I adopted Grover and Susan (see attached pic) three weeks ago, when they were both about ten or eleven weeks old. I'd been nervous about adopting kittens, but the folks at Felines & Canines were so amazingly helpful, informative, and supportive. They provided me with the resources I needed to create a loving home for the two of them. If you're looking for a kitten specifically, the great thing about Felines & Canines is the medical resources they provide young cats even after adoption day. Your adoption fee covers the cost of spaying/neutering and other kitten medical stuff (deworming, vaccines, etc). Like many shelter kittens, Grover and Susan came down with both giardia and upper respiratory illnesses in their first weeks at home. Felines & Canines handles the medical care and medication for all shelter-related illnesses free of charge. (As a grad student, I'm very grateful to not have had to pay expensive vet bills on this front.) The staff is SO knowledgable and responsive. (I've been a neurotic cat dad in these first few weeks, and Sam and Cristal at F&C have patiently indulged every single one of my dumb concerns.) I feel so lucky to have found such a wonderful shelter. They have an amazing assortment of cats and kittens, all of whom are wonderfully happy. The older cats are very much at home there, happily socializing with other cats and the staff, not cooped up by themselves. I don't have experience with the dog side of their operation, but I'm sure they're every bit as wonderful.

I was looking to add a kitten to my family since I have a 2 year old crazy kitty at home who needed a friend. I reached out to felines and Canines and it took a couple days to hear back but I was able to make an appointment for the next week. The day I came in, I got to go to the common cat room which is really clean despite having a lot of cats on the floor. It definitely smells like cats but I wouldn't l expect anything else with how many cats are out. They have cubbies for the cats and cat trees and window seats. I was looking for a kitten so I was able to go into a few of the kitten rooms and meet them. They were so sweet and cute but one in particular chose me from the beginning. She snuggled into my neck when I picked her up and purred so loudly. I couldn't not take her but I needed to make sure I was making the right decision. I made a follow up appointment for two days later and by then I was ready. I adopted that kitty that day and took her home. I haven't regretted it for a second. She's the sweetest and after a couple days my cat accepted her too. She did have an eye infection and a cold but I was able to get answers from their medical coordinator and got medicine for both. Would highly recommend this place. They love their animals and it shows.

I adopted my wonderful cat Rudy (formally Tally) on January 10th. During the adoption process, a staff member went over his health history with me. The documents indicated regular veterinary care and ZERO health issues were noted. After Rudy was in my care for a little over a week, I became concerned with what seemed to be chronic diarrhea. (I was told some diarrhea was normal at first.) Every time he used the litter box, you can smell it throughout my entire 700 sq. ft. apartment. I finally got him in to see a vet today. Although at the moment we are still waiting on the results from the stool sample, the vet noted multiple other health issues during a fairly briefly exam. 1. One of his incisors is cracked. Luckily the chip is small enough that no immediate action needs to be taken, but it's likely that it will eventually need to be extracted. I feel like there's no way the shelter staff wouldn't have noticed this, unless they really just don't pay much attention to the animals in their care. This should have been disclosed to me. 2. He had an infection in one ear. Not a huge deal, but the treatment was $85. 3. He MAY have an issue with both of his eyes, as the vet noted his third eyelids are always up. This is another thing that the shelter staff should have noted. I have owned cats for a number of years, but am not an expert and didn't know that the third eyelid shouldn't be visible. The shelter staff should have known this. The vet did say this might not be a problem at all, but it something that will need to be monitored. Right now I'm just hoping whatever is wrong with my kitty's stomach is easily remedied. I feel so let down/deceived by this shelter. I have previous experience with Anti-cruelty society and One Tail at a Time. Both these shelters' adoptions fees are half what F&C charges, but they actually tell you about all health issues an animal has, big or small. For example, I adopted a cat from Anti-Cruelty and they told me up front that she had mild dental tartar and would probably require a dental cleaning in the future. F&C DIDN'T EVEN TELL ME ABOUT A BROKEN TOOTH. I'm sure a lot of people have had good experiences here. I'm sure that all of their animals aren't sick. But please be careful and consider adopting from another organization. If they are going to charge $150 to adopt an adult cat, they should be properly vetting their animals. This is clearly not happening. February 2nd update: Vet called with the results from the stool sample - giardia. I haven't even had this cat a full month and I've made 3 trips to the vet and spent almost $300. Thankfully my other cat did not get sick! Rudy is truly the sweetest cat and I would do anything for him, but this whole experience has been extremely stressful.

    Beek Jerky taking a nap

I had the best experience adopting Beef Jerky. This was my first time adopting a cat. The process was very thorough and easy. From the time, I put in my inquiry, Samantha emailed me back within hours. She was incredibly helpful, thorough, and detailed when it came to the process. Which I appreciate. I was able to schedule my appointment within a few days. When I got to the shelter, the staff was incredibly kind to me, they brought the kitty out for me to meet. He was so cute, curious, and friendly with everyone including me. I knew I wanted to adopt him. The staff gave me his records with all of his shots, clipped his nails, and did a wellness check before I took him home. It is incredible how much they do and how well they care for their fur babies. Since bringing Beef Jerky home, he has adjusted completely and is the king of the house. He follows me everywhere and he snuggles with me. I made sure to get all the same food and treats the shelter was giving him, so he felt at home. He really is a sweet friend that I couldn't be happier to take home. I am incredibly grateful for this experience and am happy to be his forever home. Thank you!

Nosi, fka Frida, the most perfect girl from Felines & Canines
    Desi R.

Felines and Canines saved my life. We adopted our girl in July of this year. In the last year, I was diagnosed with a genetic disease that causes lots of chronic pain, got COVID, had to postpone my wedding for a second time, and was falling deeper and deeper into depression. We had also tried to adopt a pup a few months before from somewhere else, but we weren't a good fit for him, and I was devastated. I was idly browsing Petfinder one day when I saw fka Frida's photo, and sent off the only application I had sent out for months. When Abby emailed us to come meet her, we definitely didn't expect to fall in love and become dog parents that day, but we did, and I can't imagine a more perfect fit. I am thankful every day that she was able to make the connection to bring us together. The care that Abby, Sam, and the rest of team put into making matches and saving lives (both human and animal) both during the initial adoption process and throughout the pet parenthood process is incredible. If we have questions, they're there with answers. If we need a second opinion about something, they're there. If someone needs some support for anything from animal medical care to food or other necessities, they're on it. Our girl is healthy, happy, and we have the entire Chicago & Alabama teams to thank!

My partner and I adopted a ten-month old kitten last week and have had such a lovely experience! We initially inquired about a cat that was already adopted, but Sam followed up to explain that they could work to match us with a feline friend that would suit our family. Knowing that we had two cats already and were looking for someone who would get along well in our home, Clark introduced us to several adorable pals that were under a year as well as some little babes just 8 weeks! We had time to pet them, hear about their personalities, see how they interacted with all their pals, and see if they liked us. This was a great opportunity and we decided on a friendly somewhat independent buddy. He is perfect and fits right into the family! There were so many other wonderful cats at the shelter and I would definitely recommend adopting from them!

My Tennessee Walker Coonhound Baxter who I adopted from Felines & Canines.
    Rachel R.

I adopted my beloved dog, Baxter, there 8 years ago. My husband and I had never had dogs so we wanted a non-puppy we could grow with. F&C had only recently begun adopting out dogs, but everyone told us they were the best place to go for a new pet. The first time we visited, we explained what we were looking for to Abby and she said Bax was the perfect fit. She was so right! Abby and Kelly happened to live down the street from us. Baxter had only been at the shelter for about a week, but it was clear he was dearly loved because every time he saw Abby and Kelly or the F&C van, he got SO excited. I've loved seeing F&C grow as much as it has over the past several years. The time, energy, love, and devotion that Abby, Kelly, and their team pour into these animals is amazing. I'm so grateful they matched us with Baxter, and I truly can't say enough good things about the people and organization.

My experience with Felines & Canines was beyond exceptional! From the process of submitting my interest in a cat, the application all the way to taking my little guy home. They knew so much about the cats in their care and it wasn't like they were just showing you a cat to get them out of their care. They are really interested in matching you with the cat that will be a part of your family. I met with Clark when I showed up and I was able to get introduced to cats that were possibly great matches, but I was not locked into only looking at those cats, it was up to me to see who else might interest me and that's how I met Panda (aka Mr.Bootz now). Altogther, I am so happy with this experienced and so happy that I was able to bring home my little man.

My husband and I adopted all four of our cats here (the boys in 2018 and girls 2019). I can not express how happy and grateful we are to have them. Two of them are my ESA and have helped me get past some tragedies that happened. They have saved me a lot and shown so much affection and love. The adoption was easy and super fast. We were educated on why not to declaw and other helpful information. I can't imagine not having them with us. They are so precious and we love them all very much. Thank you F&C. For letting us adopt these babies.

When I moved to Chicago, I knew that it would not be too long before I would need another furry friend. I waited (im)patiently for my partner to get onboard with my decision to add a four-legged family member. We had applied with a few other shelters, but the visits were not great. Then, a friend told me about Felines & Canines. They are currently doing "trial adoptions," which allows you to see if a pet would be a good fit in your home. This was especially attractive for us because we wanted to see the dog in our home and make sure it was a good fit all around. We only had a few hours to make the decision after submitting our application and being notified that David was going to be available to take home that evening. We drove up to the clinic in Edgewater and David was delivered to us by the very caring staff. Now, the name David is not a very 'puppy' name, but we have decided to both keep him and the name. His full name is David Rose and like his namesake he enjoys eating treats and being adored. And while he has had a few accidents, he is learning potty training and we will be starting more advanced obedience lessons. Best of all, he is a kind, goofy, and lovable pup who fits in so well with our family. Felines & Canines continues to follow up and will be helping us with completing his booster shots and getting Davey neutered in a few weeks. I highly recommend Felines & Canines in helping you find your next best friend!

How much does it cost for 1 little kitten?

I believe that kittens less than a year were $125 or &150 and older were $100.

Can people come in to interact/play with the dogs with no intent to adopt yet?

Hi Zora- Unfortunately, we're not open to the public and don't have dogs onsite. Try PAWS or Anti-Cruelty Society.

Do you do volunteering for teens (13)?

Unfortunately we don't have a Volunteer program. Try Treehouse or PAWS!

I paid $10 onsite which included a drink or pastry of my choice and 30 min play time with these feline beauties. When I arrived at the cafe at the scheduled time, the young lady at the cafe informed me there was only one cat in the cafe area but offered me to see some more cats upstairs. Honestly, that was a great trade-off even though she kept apologizing to me for the inconvenience. I was able to enjoy my iced chai and visited some kittens and adult cats in different colonies. Toys and hand sanitizers were provided as we entered and exited each colony. The barista lady introduced me to the cats that were awake for some playtime. Too bad 30 minutes went by way to fast and it was time for me to leave. "Tree House Humane Society" is near the 49B (Western) bus stop. I personally had to take 3 busses from my house to get there, so I do recommend driving since parking should not be too hard to find. There are spots by the building for the patrons I assume.

The Anti-Cruelty Society that uses the newspapers to line the cages for the cats who are in quarantine while waiting to enter the adoption process. I am excited about this and so are my two neighbors now that donate. The staff at the Anti-Cruelty Society is stellar. The Process: 1. Bring your newspapers to the Anti-Cruelty Society and ring the buzzer next to the door.   2. Once you enter the vestibule you leave the newspapers on what looks like an elementary school desk. 3.  Then they are collected by the staff so there is "no contact." FYI-I ask my neighbors to put a note on-top of their stack of newspapers with their words to express their donation.  It let's the Anti-Cruelty Society know that they are being donated on behalf of my neighbors and it makes both parties feel good about the donation. I was one of those who wasn't deterred by the reviews because it felt like they weren't taking…read moreseriously the fact that a shelter was understaffed (as they often are) or that they probably shouldn't be adopting with the expectation of an immediate turnaround. Undeterred by those reviews, we went to the shelter with a particular cat from Petfinder in mind. Unlike the reviews I'd read, Jasmine was responsive when I left a voicemail asking if they were open for adoption events on Jan. 1st, given it was a holiday. She told us what time to arrive as well. The positives: the cats are clearly incredibly well cared for. Jasmine has a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of each and every cat, even when the cat hasn't been at the shelter very long. Her volunteers are kind and friendly and were really helpful with us. All of them helped people interested in adoption to understand each cat's background and context: this one is bonded so can't go alone, that one is too young for your home because you have elderly cats and the young one will harass them, etc. The shelter isn't just dedicated to preventing cats from being euthanized unnecessarily, but also to ensuring that the homes people want to bring those cats into are appropriate to the needs of the cats. Overall, with all of this, we were really impressed. The cat we'd seen on petfinder didn't end up being a fit for us, but there was another cat there who hadn't been adopted for four months who was. He was a black cat, very charming and sociable, and after going through and meeting all the cats we decided that he was likely a great fit for our home, which has a young cat and two middle aged cats as playmates. Jasmine seemed elated because she said "no one takes a chance on black cats, thanks for taking a chance on him!" We've had a black cat before (he died at age 18), and were excited to meet another one who was just as charming. We were asked to fill out an application. We knew we wouldn't likely be able to take him home that day and that was fine...a shelter really should vet its applicants to ensure the best outcome for the cat. We filled out the application for the black cat, and as we were leaving Jasmine offered to do our interview right then to determine whether we would be a good fit for the cat. We were thrilled it was that quick. For context, we are homeowners in our mid-40s, have been employed at the same salaried jobs for many years, have a long history of adopting adult cats and keeping them healthy and living their best life until well into old age (including a verifiable track record of regular annual preventive veterinary care, updated vaccines on schedule, etc). Jasmine pre-approved us, told us the cat needed a microchip and a visit with their nurse, but she felt she could get that on Sunday (ie. 24 hours later) and drop the cat to our house that night. Sunday came and went, no text. I inquired on Sunday night really politely about timelines. She said monday morning that a board member would review the application that day and get back to me in the evening. No response Monday. Tuesday I texted asking if there were any updates, offering to pick up the cat if that would be easier, and happy to provide additional information if needed in assessing the application. She responded she hadn't heard back from the board member. No news Wednesday. Thursday I followed up again, still very polite as who knows what the circumstances were. Got a response Friday: our application "did not go through" and someone else filled out an application for the cat we applied for and another cat, and the cat went with that applicant. So this is where the negatives come in: if your organization's goal is to find good, stable homes for cats, this isn't how to treat folks. There has never been any explanation for why we were rejected. In the event they found a better fit for the cat we applied for, that's great! But no one ever told us that he was bonded with any other cats (and we have playmates for the cat at our house), no one told us anything other than our application "did not go through" with no explanation as to why, and if they found a better fit, they could have asked us to come back and consider another cat and we would have done that. In the end, we have the space, love, resources, and time to invest in another cat, and a long track record of doing so. Instead we got ghosted and rejected, with no explanation whatsoever, and no apology. For as much as they've got cat care figured out, it seems pretty counter-intuitive to alienate good, safe, stable potential homes for those animals. We won't be going back. In the event they want to improve, they could do a lot to improve transparency and communication to preserve those relationships. They'd get a lot more support that way, through adoptions and donations.
