The volunteers at PPAH were very kind and responsive throughout our adoption process. We found the application and process (including interview) to be very thorough, which made us feel confident that this rescue really cares about who adopts the animals. We could not complete a home visit or cat visit due to COVID but we still felt the process was great. We love our little Banana!

*I can see why/how it'd take so long to get your pet, but we were very persistent and it was under 2 weeks for us from start to finish. Give them your cell phone #, email again in a few days if you didn't get a response, and it'll work out. :) We adopted a kitten from PPAH and it was a wonderful experience. They have a great team and, while I can easily see that it might be a longer process for some people, we were able to adopt Cudi (Brick) within two weeks. This took persistence on our part, for sure, and I was definitely emailing/texting/offering to go whichever PetSmart to meet him, but we made it happen and he really has made our cat and dogs so much happier with his energy. It's easy to walk into PAWS and walk out the same day with a cat, which we did with our other cat, but you really get a sense of who the animal is from PPAH because they mostly/all have been fostered. When we were at PAWS, still another great shelter, oftentimes the cats are new or there are so many volunteers that they don't know the cats. You don't get a real sense of their personality until later. With Cudi, we had a full impression from the foster family, and another great element was that he was living with dogs, so we knew he'd probably be okay with our dogs, too. He was very much cared for and came ready to go (neutered, microchipped, dewormed, deloused...did I mention they called him Brick because they found him in a pile of bricks?...updated on shots)~ they even got his final booster shot the day before we adopted him so that we wouldn't have to schedule an appointment. They do require you do buy/have a collar and ID tag, but that isn't a burden, and you get a solid coupon book for PetSmart since they work together.

Honestly I'm a little surprised and saddened by the poor reviews for these guys. Precious Pets is an all volunteer organization, so the women who run it DO have other responsibilities. I hardly think having to wait a few days for a phone call is reason not to adopt a cat - if you truly wanted to adopt, you'd make an effort, too. I've spoken with everyone in the group and they are all extremely kind, accommodating, and helpful. Regarding the cats in cages at Petsmart - of course that is not ideal! These are only a few of the cats PPAH have. All others are in foster homes, including many in the homes of the women who run the group. From what I've seen, they also try to rotate cats in and out of Petsmart, so that one cat isn't stuck there for too long of time. I'm also fairly certain that a volunteer is in there taking care of the cats *almost* every day of the week. I've adopted 2 cats from PPAH and hope to foster another soon! Don't let a few disgruntled reviews deter you from adopting from them :)

We adopted 2 cats from Precious Pets Almost Home. The team was great; friendly and responsive. I appreciated the questions and background check. They care about an animal's welfare after it leaves the shelter. Even better they are a true no kill shelter. We wanted a specific cat and they were able to help us pick out another cat that would be a good companion.

I've never written a Yelp review before, but I felt that I should for Precious Pets Almost Home. I have received nothing but full and expedient cooperating from this small volunteer organization. I was interested in adopting a cat at one time and had begun the process with Precious Pets Almost Home. Due to misinformation that I had perceived on my end whether cats were allowed in my building or not, I could not proceed with the adoption. PPAH was so understanding about my situation. They assured me that if my living situation ever changed, they would allow me to adopt a cat. Recently, PPAH notified me of an urgent situation where a dog had been abandoned and needed somewhere to go to immediately, otherwise he would've been taken to Animal Control. I stepped in and offered to foster him. His name is Max. Unfortunately Max, who's 9 yrs. old, had not received any of his shots since he was 1 yr. old. He wasn't neutered or groomed. His tail was severely infected. He received NO dental care. Worst of all, he suffers from severe separation anxiety. The volunteers from PPAH not only took care of his shots and grooming, but they also got him neutered. His tail was too infected yo save so it had to be amputated. They got that done. He was given dental care as well. Due to his severe separation anxiety, I had to discontinue providing foster care for Max but the volunteers were nothing but understanding. They took him back and are currently looking for a forever home for this sweet little dog. When my living situation changes, I will definitely go back to Precious Pets Almost Home for a pet. You should too. Absolutely. You won't find a more dedicated organization to pets than this one.

Precious Pets Almost Home really cares about the animals in their care. Aurora and the ladies at Precious Pets passion for what they do show in how much time and effort they put into making sure that their charges go to a forever home. We fell in love with Hero the moment we saw him. We brought Hero home a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier.

In May of 2017 I began to foster Spike, a beautiful 25 lb tabby cat after I saw his picture on the Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) Facebook page. I quickly realized I wanted Spike to be a permanent member of the family. My experience with PPAH and Ro was wonderful. They are very thorough and want to ensure the cats are going to good homes with capable humans to care for them. I truly appreciate the amount of work and care they put into their work. After fostering Spike for a couple of months, I officially adopted him in October of 2017 and he is down to 22 lbs!

This is an amazing volunteer-powered organization that puts much TLC into matching pets with compatible homes. Yes, it may take a little longer to work with them than going through a larger, one-stop organization, but the personal connection and advice you receive from the PPAH's knowledgeable and caring volunteers is well worth it. Take the time to get in touch with them and send a follow-up email if you haven't heard back. The effort you put into the adoption process is much less burdensome than the work you'll put into caring for your pet over its lifetime, and it'll be well worth it once you're paired with a pet that suits your household and personality!

Precious pets does a thorough job with making sure the cat you're interested in will match with your household. The process took about a week and a half, but well worth the wait. Aurora made sure my cat received her shots and was highly interested in how she has been adapting. I am grateful to have worked with precious pets and adopted a great cat!

I found the new love of my life here, and my application was processed with all haste. I expected to wait much longer to bring my new little girl home, and I'm so happy to have her! They are very thorough in their pre-adoption care and their policies align with my own ideals, particularly regarding the no declaw policy. River (formerly Mahjong) and I thank you with all our hearts for bringing us together!

I can't help but feel as though a lot of these negative reviews are a bit harsh and unfair. I also noticed that the negative reviews did not come from people who actually adopted animals. As someone who adopted 2 excellent cats from Famous Fido, I can not give enough credit for all their work. Animal care is an incredibly serious commitment and one not to be taken lightly. The folks at Famous Fido do ask questions and do not instantly turn over their animals that day. I visited the cats a couple of times before adopting them and was given time to really think it over and prepare our home beforehand. When I went to visit them I was able to enter their space, see how they interact and play. No one hovered over me and told me which cats I should get. I actually appreciated this process because I got to know the animals. It was a bit of a process but they wanted to ensure the animals were going to a good home, which I deeply respect. Being a rescue they take in a lot of animals from rough situations and rehabilitate them and put them in a safe environment. One of the cats we adopted came in with serious health issues and they took care of all of her medical needs, she is now fully recovered to the sweetest cuddliest angel. I could not recommend Famous Fido enough. The cats that we adopted are well adjusted, well-behaved, and comfortable with socializing.Thank you, Famous Fido for helping our little guys be happy and heal before having people adopt them. Just be sure you are ready to be taking on this commitment and the responsibilities of having an animal join your family. Once you are it truly is an absolute joy.

So I wanted to take her to a place where she can visit and play with cats and Harmony House was perfect for that. They had a Holiday Bazaar event which was a free event and they had raffles, a bake sale, etc. All proceeds went to helping the cats. What we loved about Harmony house was that it's a cage free shelter for cats. They had several rooms filled with different cats that you can go into and play with them for however long you wanted. It's a great way to get acquainted especially if you're thinking about adopting! There were several cats available, different breeds and all different temperaments. Such an awesome cast shelter to visit! All of the people that worked there were so friendly and informative too! They all knew the names of each kitty and some names were very clever. So I can't comment on the adoption process, but I can speak to the friendliness of the staff/volunteers and the cleanliness of the facility. I was trying to help out a stray cat who'd been coming by and meowing loudly at the door. I was not in a position to adopt another cat, and never once did anyone pressure me to take one of their very cute residents home. Fast-forward to two weeks after picking the trap up, and I'd caught all manner of local wildlife but not the cat. I called to see if I could get a weeklong extension and they cheerfully gave me two more weeks. The building is very clean and modern. Everyone there was very nice when I was picking up and dropping off the trap, if a little harried. I got the impression that they work hard to care for the cats they have and that they sometimes get unscheduled drop-offs (when I showed up to get the trap, the woman who met me at the door looked relieved and said that when the doorbell rang, she was afraid it was "another dump") -- which is sort of heartbreaking. I hope people who have the room and the resources to adopt will check out Harmony House, because their residents certainly deserve a second chance.

One cat became more skittish, the other batting at the toddler. And then they started marking the house. Literally everywhere. Thousands in damage. We weren't able to be attentive pet owners. I knew we needed to relinquish them and our family of 6 was heartbroken. We also knew it was OUR environment causing the behaviors and acknowledged that. When I reached out to Alive (to their credit, they did respond to my emails) they suggested I separate our toddler and the cat. A toddler? A cat? Mmmmkay. After going back and forth while, they're asking me for medical records, giving more useless suggestions and switching from empathy to being completely dismissive and rude (we also reached out to multiple other shelters that were full), we ended up surrendering to CACC. They had the cats fully vetted, staying together and up on their page in a day ready for adoption. They were so kind and understanding. Guess who now has a "firm hold" on them from CACC? Yep. Alive. Listen, we're eternally grateful that they're going somewhere safe, but did we really have to deal with all the trauma? Go elsewhere to adopt. Seriously.

I want to tell you a story about a dog named Starfish -- and a rescue that let her down…read more In the summer of 2024, a mutual acquaintance sent me a link to a dog named Starfish at Alive Rescue. She was suffering from severe kennel stress, and they were urgently seeking a foster. I answered the call. Within days of bringing her home, I committed to adopting her. She was gentle, curious, and full of potential. I poured everything into helping her thrive: long walks, obedience work, enrichment games, socialization, vet visits -- everything the bestest girl deserved. They said adoption would be quick. Then it was delayed. Then it was ignored. Then it was revoked. The worst moment came when they asked me to take Starfish to an adoption event and present her as available -- even though she had already been promised to me. I didn't realize it at the time, but that was their game: advertise the dog, create demand, and change the plan when it suits them. A classic bait-and-switch -- and it turns out I'm not the only one this has happened to. In fact, I have an email from Anita herself explicitly stating that this is her tactic. (It's attached.) In the end, they took Starfish away. No clear reason. Just control. At first, I believed they had found another adopter -- she disappeared from their site. But I later saw internal volunteer emails showing she was back at the shelter. She was no longer being promoted anywhere, perhaps because they realized they had crossed a line by revoking the adoption and didn't want to draw attention to their error. That silence -- that purgatory -- was incredibly cruel. Not to me, but to Starfish. She sat in a shelter, no longer promoted, no longer seen, while the home she had already bonded with was cut off from her. She didn't reappear on their website for several months. Instead, she bounced between the shelter and various foster homes. It became increasingly clear that Alive Rescue was unable to provide consistent care for her at their facility as she was "too much". She ultimately spent her final months in their custody living in a dog hotel, before finally being adopted -- eight months after she was taken from, and denied, a loving home. I support, and will continue to support, rescue. Before my experience with Alive, I was the proud owner of a rescue dog who was with me for ten years before I lost him. That same rescue -- who knew my home and history -- kindly advocated for me to keep Starfish. But Alive doesn't list a phone number, ignored all outside emails, and clearly didn't care about anyone's opinion but their own. After this experience, I made a choice: I wasn't going to let a narrow-minded, judgmental organization deter me from the cause of dog rescue. I went on to foster four at-risk dogs, all of whom have since been placed in loving homes. But I did learn a valuable lesson -- about the importance of keeping politics and personal judgment out of animal rescue, and always prioritizing what is best for the animal. If you're thinking of working with Alive Rescue, please go in with your eyes open. The matchmaking process is less about what's best for the dog, and more about satisfying the egos of the staff. If you want to rescue from Alive, you won't just need to provide a stable and loving home -- you'll need to be deemed worthy. And most importantly: I urge you not to donate to this organization. Instead, support your local shelter or a foster-based rescue that puts dogs first. The mismanagement I witnessed with Starfish was staggering -- including paying for a dog hotel for months because they were unable or unwilling to provide care at their facility. I don't believe when we donate to a dog rescue, that money should then be spent on a for-profit dog hotel. Alive Rescue's conduct was not only frustrating, it was so deeply counterproductiv that it has discouraged good people from considering adoption altogether. And that is their greatest failure of all.

When I arrived at the cafe at the scheduled time, the young lady at the cafe informed me there was only one cat in the cafe area but offered me to see some more cats upstairs.
