I've seen this place on Bank often and always liked the color sense of the place, with the exterior painted in saturated, bright turquoises and purples. My friend and I went for a quick bite after an event, and we sat out in the patio area for our dinner. The decor there is marvelous. I'm a big fan of color use, contrasts, jewel tones, and all things bright, and this place is certainly no disappointment. Inside is a lot of nice Mexican-inspired decor, although I wasn't thrilled with the cliche row of sombreros lining the bar area. That's about as reflective of Mexico as a lederhosen is reflective of Germany. Just... no. But the rest of the place is cutely done. The service was spectacular, especially considering it was fairly crowded on the patio at the time. The waiter was attentive and had a very endearing personality to him and he made sure we had everything we needed. The food itself was ok and I finished my plate fine. I've had a lot worse Mexican and Tex Mex in my life, but this also wasn't really anything to write home about either. There seemed to be a big emphasis on it being Mexican-style food geared towards the Western palate, rather than something authentically representative of Mexican fare. Feleena's claims they're authentic Mexican cuisine, but I've had enough of the real thing growing up very close to the region and visiting often enough that I knew Tex Mex when I taste it. It's just not the same thing at all. To their credit, the ingredients were fresh, and I usually judge a romaine salad pretty harshly, and theirs was fine. Nothing funkified or wilty about it, which is usually enough to send me into a blind rage of mouth-foaming, chair-throwing protest (that last part was a lie, the part about the lettuce is true, though.) All in all, it's an ok place. If you're not a Mexican food snob like myself, you'll probably be ok with eating there, but I don't think it'll become my go-to for regional cuisine personally. read more

This place has the trio of food, atmosphere and service down. The food is delicious (I've had the enchilladas and fajitas). When the waiter heard I had only ever tried awful margaritas you get from frozen tubs, he convinced me to try one from their daily-made batch. Needless to say, I am not a big margarita fan! The service is friendly, fast and accommodating. They easily adapted meals to my wheat-free (corn tortillas) and dairy-free diet. The interior is just a lot of fun - each chair is different, everything is painted in bright colours, and there are fun decorations on the walls. I've only been there once, but I will be back many, many times. Margarita's are delicious, good beers on tap...and then there is the food. Fajitas are delicious - the steak is cooked incredibly well, the veggies are cooked yet crunchy; I couldn't get enough The enchiladas were a hit, the beans and rice that came with them were spot on. The service was incredible. It must be family owned, because the mother and son were working, along with a group of others that seem quite close and friendly. It was attentive service, without being pushy. Very warm and genuine. The whole point is you should go to this little Mexican place on the corner of Second and Bank. I ate here the other day and it was an okay experience. Service was great and our server was very nice, friendly, attentive (but not overly so) and quite knowledgeable about the drinks. He was awesome. The food was just okay. Nothing terrible, nothing spectacular. I got the cheese enchiladas which I was slightly disappointed with. I guess I was expecting more than literally just cheese (and nothing else!) in a rolled up tortilla. The sides were okay as well - rice was good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the black beans. We ordered a margarita as well, and I was expecting the traditional frozen/slushy margarita, but instead I got margarita "juice" with a few ice cubes. It was just luke warm. The great thing about this place though was the price - just about everything on the lunch menu was $10.00. read more

We went as a group of four on a Friday evening. We phoned in advance for a reservation. We were seated right away and the menus were delivered promptly. We were pressured to order quickly and then it was a long wait for the food to arrive. The waitress came by to check on our drinks. We were not offered the chance to order chips and salsa so we enquired if it was possible and then that was delivered. The food came and it was not the best but not the worst. I would say it is one up from Taco Bell but not priced accordingly. We ate our meals and the waitress was then ON US to leave. Came by every two minutes to ask if we were ready for coffee, we said no maybe later, came back two minutes later and asked again. After this went on a while we asked if they wanted us to leave. She said "oh no...but there are reservations". We asked how long could we have the table? She said no rush and then came back two minutes later and asked if we would like anything else. We asked to see the dessert menu and it was not provided. Rather the waitress spoke it outloud. We asked again if we could have one we could read, in fact we could not. We literally felt harrassed to leave the restaurant. I cannot recall ever being treated so rudely in an Ottawa restaurant. There was a woman stalking the floor with a clip board that was pressuring the server to pressure us - had it not been so insulting it might have been comical. As we left I pointed out to Madam Clipboard that we had made a reservation to be there for the evening and that if they have time set time slots they should have told us at that time. Knowing that we had planned to be out for the evening we would have chosen a different location. As it was we were literally pushed out the door. The food was poor for the price and the dining room is a combination of dust, dirt and grime. We will never return and we will advise any of our friends in Ottawa who enjoy an evening out to steer clear of this sub-par restaurant. read more

Early Easter afternoon, my brother, a friend of ours, and I walked down Bank Street looking for a place to eat. The patio and colourful exterior design drew us in and we decided to try it out. Sure glad we did! On a beautiful day like it was, we didn't hesitate to take patio seating. When we arrived, there were only two people at the restaurant but more and more people came in filling the patio-this place is quite popular. The owner as our server was so welcoming and friendly and helped us make our meal decisions. And since we were the few people there, our meals came out shortly after ordering. We had the chicken enchiladas and the beef tacos and they were DELICIOUS as well as a pitcher of Sangria with fresh cut slices of orange, which was quite amazing. The portions were great and prices were fair for Lunch meals- $15 for a meal. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in the city. Everything I've ever had there has been delicious and I usually have leftovers because of the generous portions. Returning to Feleena's again in better weather, we sat on the patio. The single server here dealt with an annoying family group beside us with considerable aplomb: they not only sent food back to the kitchen to be de-spiced but requested special off the menu drinks and tried to monopolize all her time. To her credit, service didn't suffer but it was an off-night in the kitchen. Beans and rice were dry and lacking in flavour and the enchiladas had a re-heated texture. Serving sizes were positively frugal. Credit card payments are dealt with inside at an old wooden serving cabinet where you have to wait for your server. I guess this is friendly "cantina" style, but it made for an annoying delay. read more

I have lived in Mexico and now I live in SF Bay Area, where authentic Mexican food is all over. This place served food much worse than Taco Bell (a US chain of junk Mexi food). My tacos came with refried beans that did not taste remotely like pinto beans: it was all weird thick spice, all smooth as if whipped for hours and pure garbage-tasting. The tacos were also awful with awful fillings. I ordered corn but got wheat tortillas. One positive note: I substituted vegies for the rice and the green beans were quite tasty. Given the destruction of the pinto beans into unrecognizable, vile-tasting slop, the tasty green beans were a nice surprise. Serve sucked too. Weirdly, my friends in Ottawa gushed about the food. They did order different things. My meal was one of the all time worst restaurant meals I have ever eaten. I choked it down because these friends had gotten angry a few days earlier when I disclosed that I don't like raw red peppers. I guess in Ottawa people eat awful food and expect everyone to pretend they like it. read more

In combination with the fast and very friendly service and the patio, I was ready to give this place five stars. Our main courses were good, but not great. I had beef tacos, he had chicken quesidillas, and both were solid, but standard. Nothing special - simplest ingredients. Like the tacos your mom made growing up (so this may be a good option for less adventurous eaters). I'm always a little hesitant to eat at new restaurants. The vegetarian options are usually the same as the meat options, but the meat is replaced with massive quantities of onion. Thankfully, that was not the case with Feleena's. I ordered the vegetarian chili. It was phenomenal! I love a good spicy dish and this had a kick to it. I was also pleasantly surprised by the portion size. I normally have a pretty good appetite, but I had some difficulty finishing the whole thing, and I was all too happy to do it. My wife and I lived in the states all summer and grew accustomed to the the plethora of Mexican food places. Yes, they had your Taco Bells and Taco Time, but there were also tonnes of non-fastfood Mexican options. Then, we came to Canada only to find that Mexican food isn't really on the menu here. Heck, it took us two months to run across a Taco Bell, and even then it is part of a KFC/Pizza Hut complex. Thankfully, there is Feleena's in the Glebe. Feleena's is a real Mexican restaurant, where you can sit and enjoy a four-star Mexican meal. Yes, they serve your nachos and fajitas. But, you can also find the lesser-known, but delightful carne asada, or chimichanga. And they serve more than bottles of Corona and Dos Equis - you can enjoy margaritas and (sigh) sangria!!! The location is awesome - right in the heart of the Glebe, and in the summer, the patio will be smokin'! So, relax Ottawa: you don't have to do without good Mexican food anymore. read more

Food crap. Service crappier. I actually used to like this place, but about a year ago, the quality began to slip. Then one night, a group of us went in before a movie. We waited for someone to come over and take our orders. We waited. And waited. And waited. Not to put too fine a point on it, our waitress took forever to get to us, by which time, most of use wanted to leave, which prompted her to start arguing with us (like it was our fault she ignored us for 40 minutes). In the end, we got cold food, weak drinks and, I swear, dirty cutlery. In the end, we all vowed to never eat there again. And we all kept that vow. read more

Wasn't today a gorgeous day ! Hard to believe we nearly are in the middle of November. Anyway, a friend of mine invited me to try Feleena's, a Mexican restaurant in the Glebe. I will give Feleena's a mixed review. Although the warm colours and artifacts of the decor reminds you of Mexico, there is something sloppy about it. The painting on the wall is not properly done, and the ceramics look a bit cheap. The service, while warm and friendly, was a bit shaky. It took several minutes for someone to come and welcome us, and, after the meal, the girl who was supposed to process the credit card payments looked very eager to go back to her bar tending duties. Besides that, the food is good. I had a very good beef burrito, that was spicy, but not too much. The prices on the lunch menu are very reasonable ( less than $10), and the portion can fill a big appetite (which my friend and I had). The crowd is composed of Glebe residents, a 30 years+ crowd. I will recommend Feleena's to anyone, as a nice little place for lunch. read more

I lived in Texas for 7 years and have only been back in Canada for less than a year. I had heard great things about this place, but I should have researched it more. The website stated the owners lived/stayed/traveled in Mexico often. I was expecting authentic Mexican and not crap like their velveeta queso! Texas obviously has an abundance of authentic Mexican restaurants, Tex-Mex and food trucks. We even had restaurants that specialized in specific cuisine from various regions of Mexico. This food was terrible. The guacamole tasted horrendous, it was brown and like it had been previously frozen. I can make killer guacamole and authentic queso (with real Mexican cheeses). If I opened a restaurant it would be freaking amazing, authentic Mexican. I learned how to cook various Hispanic dishes from friends who lived in Texas from Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, whatever... this is why I find it so difficult to understand how these owners can cook this crap Mexican. It's a shame and embarrassing to people who love Mexican food. So we barely touched our guac and the owner herself removed it from our table, she didn't even bother to ask if there was a problem with it. I ordered the tamale and it was terrible, like who puts sour cream on the plate? The service was terrible. Our server was this guy who I assumed was retired from his previous job and appears to be in his 60s. We literally had to wave him down to order drinks, he ignored us. we waited for a second cocktail and he failed to return. We just got up from our table and ventured inside to get our bill. This is a small restaurant and 3 servers were on for a restaurant who seats less than 20 tables including their patio. Never wait in line here and avoid this place at all costs. This was my first time at this restaurant, and I enjoyed myself here thoroughly. The food was very tasty, I ordered the taco salad and it was great. We rarely write to restaurant owners to congratulate or condemn, as restaurant-going in Ottawa is mostly a "roll-of-the-dice" experience. But our experience at Feleena's represents a very disagreeable and negative restaurant experience. My partner and I decided to end our Sunday afternoon Bank St. stroll with a light early dinner at Feleena's. We were seriously disappointed with the quality of the food, the service and the surroundings. Below is a descriptive list of our complaint's elements: 1.We arrived to an understaffed and under heated restaurant - NO ONE was there to greet us as we entered so we waited and waited. We were on the point of leaving when a person emerged struggling with two huge plastic buckets of ice for the bar area. This person (the waitress we later found out) told us to just "sit anywhere" with a nod of her head. 2.We grabbed some menus and headed towards our "anywhere" seats to be yelled at that those were "lunch menus and that it was past four PM already!". (At that point, we should have just left, but we wanted to give this restaurant a chance.) 3.Once seated, we were told by the waitress that she would be there in "just a minute". It took 5 minutes! She did not offer us any water, but we were asked if we wanted anything from the bar. We subsequently requested water but she never brought it to the table, not even during the meal. 4.We did not get the "free" bowl of "nachips" that we saw other customers get before ordering our meals. 5.We ordered two black bean soups and Entremes Surtidos: a platter of chicken, chorizo and ceviche with appetizer feta cheese quesadillas. *The soup was served tepid with a sprinkling of fly off the plate tasteless dry parsley. The taste was mediocre but the soup was not even warm - no contrast with the blob of ice cold sour cream sitting in the middle of it. *The surditos platter was the most disappointing food stuff we have ever eaten: the chicken was ice cold, greasy little pieces of grilled grizzled chicken (?) sitting on cold out-of-the-can black beans - this did not even fill the ramekin in which it was served! *We did not get any chorizo on this platter (which perhaps is a blessing, considering that the latter is a type of pork sausage!). *The ceviche was inedible: spongy, over-flavored with acetic lime and unrecognizable as a food product (I thought it was calamari!). *The tomatoes were tasteless, watery and half frozen, - chopped-up chunks of tasteless food. *We got only a half quesadilla, cold and wet, undercooked and filled with what looked like a thin piece of processed (not feta) cheese (the half quesadilla looked like it had come off someone's plate the night before). *The guacamole had a thin liquid seeping out of it and tasted horrible - not fresh, gluey, and over salted. *The decorative lettuce (perhaps to compensate for the space where the chorizo was lacking?) had a thin, green gooey edge of slime all around it. 6.All plates were extremely cold, adding to our overall dissatisfaction. Only the beer was adequate (except the draught glass was dirty around one edge). 7.To add insult to injury, a disheveled cook came out of the side door (in full view of us as customers) wearing the filthiest apron we have ever seen. He wiped his hands on his probably pathogen-filled apron and smoked a cigarette. We'd had enough and requested the bill. Only three words come to mind when we think of Feleena's - "gross" and "never again"! The fact that we spent $45.00 is pointless. It is the negative experience that you, as a restaurant client, need to know about. Perhaps a suggestion where the restaurant's cleanliness is concerned could also help : the women's bathrooms need attention, as does the floor near the south side/end table feet. The beer glasses also need to be ultra clean. No wonder the waitress never asked if we'd enjoyed our meal - she would have gotten an earful! We are not looking for compensation as we do not wish to visit that establishment ever again. PS We sent a letter in the first week of Nov. 2008 and by Jan. 9 2009, we HAD NEVER GOTTEN A REPLY! read more

The food is absolutely vile. There is no flavor whatsoever in the meals prepared. The food is highly over priced for what was served on our plate. The restaurant was uncomfortable, it was dirty, aweful smell of toxic mold oozing from the kitchen area going downstairs to the bathrooms. While making my way downstairs to the bathroom, I overheard the ktchen staff saying " Well it just fell (food) on the floor for 10 second, it's ok to use it (food). Its just a 10 second rule". Im glad i heard that after I ate. Absolutely no hygene in that kitchen. Moldy smell all over the place. Specially in the Glebe where everything is so damned pretentious (restaurants, boutiques. you name it and overly priced). These people at this restaurant have suffered a flavor and freshness lobotomy. I do not recommend this place to anyone, not even for a dog to eat there. And we took our friends advice to go to that dumpster of a restaurant and we regret it. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE; GO AT YOUR OWN RISK AND WASTE YOUR MONEY IF YOU WANT TO. read more

Being in the Glebe and full of patron's sadly doesn't attest to this establishments quality of food and drinks. I was sorely disappointed. I figured you couldn't get much worse than Mexi's.. Well after ten minutes we began to wonder if we'd made the wrong choice, perhaps we should have suffered through Mexi's watery salsa and chips, and it's mediocre food. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria and "Chili Nacho's" to start. My SO also had a margarita. Fifteen minutes in, when the drinks arrived we knew we'd made the wrong choice. I had the worst sangria I've ever had in my life, and sadly it was a pitcher full. Pretty sure it contained less than a quarter glass of wine. The margarita was horrid, how can you screw up two very simple drinks. Well, that was answered when the nacho's arrived. There was no salsa, no peppers, nothing but a dozen nachos on a small plate. Barely any cheese on them, and this horrid three spoonfuls of .. beans and beef. Accompanied by a rather large portion of sour cream. The main courses were even worse. Quite frankly the worst mexican food I've had in Ottawa. I should also mention that the prices are higher than other mexican establishments likely because Feleena's is situated in the Glebe. Being use to amazing Mexican I was skeptical; but we never even got to the food and I think if anyone could see the kitchen they would leave before eating as well. We went to Feleena's yesterday, and I took my Mother (85 yrs old). She said the food looked funny, but when she ate it she was quite happy with the flavour. I thought it looked fine, and it was very tasty. I had the chicken with goat cheese and some kind of cream sauce, which was delicious. The portion sizes were not excessive, which was nice, as everyone cleaned their plates and there was just enough with no waste. The wait staff was excellent, and my family really enjoyed themselves. Waited half an hour for a waiter, then another 50 minutes for our food it was wrong my vegetarian friend had meat in her meal i had the wrong order then had a birthday ice cream delivered ( maybe only good thing?) however started to eat and almost choked on the plastic candle holder that was on top of the ice cream.
