Wardle Feed & Pet Supply - A 4 week old "hen" with a large comb that turned out to be a rooster

I have had the worst experiences with Wardle's and just want to warn others…read more In June 2024, as a brand new chicken owners, I bought 3 Rhode Island Red hens from them. I was not able to go into the coop with the sales associate so he just went in, grabbed whatever three hens he could get and put them in my carrier. When I got home and took them out, I noticed one could barely walk. I tried to give her some rescue 911 electrolytes in her water and access to food thinking maybe getting scooped up and put in a box and then being in a car for 15 minutes was a stress on her nervous system and she just needed some time to acclimate. I called Wardle's to tell them what happened and asked if I could switch her for another hen. The manager told me no because she could be sick... even though that meant they had just sold me a sick chicken. She struggled for weeks. We had to keep her in a separate coop and spent countless dollars on a ton of different supplements trying to figure out what was wrong with her and to keep her alive. Finally we tried Vitamin B12 and after a few days of it in her water, she able to walk normally. Although she was always a pretty sickly chicken and not even a year later we found her dead in the coop one morning (no sign of attack or any injuries). Fast forward to September of 2025. We wanted to get a few chicks to raise and integrate with our flock. Against my better judgement, we went back to Wardle's to get chicks. They only had 4 week olds and again, we weren't allowed in the room where the brooders were to pick the ones we wanted so we just told the associate how many and which breeds. We got 3 gold laced Wyandottes, a Rhode Island Red and a Barred Rock. I looked in the box and noticed one of the hens had a pretty big comb. I asked if that was normal because we definitely didn't want a rooster. They assured me it was a hen. 3 months later, our "hen" has started crowing. We can't have roosters in Lakewood so now we have to find someone to take him or cull him. It breaks my heart. Of note, since then we have ordered chicks from McMurray and Meyer's Hatchery and had really healthy, beautiful, hens. Not a single rooster. I would highly recommend ordering from a hatchery over buying any chickens from Wardle's!

Vetco Total Care has full service vet care including dental & surgeries plus they are open everyday except Sunday from 8AM-6PM. Note, the first exam is free. One of my dogs needed to be seen right away & this location had the first available appointment. I arrived on time & was shown to an exam room immediately, which I appreciated vs the waiting room. I waited about fifteen minutes before the Tech arrived. She was quite friendly & caring. The Tech explained a couple of different treatment options, all the while trying to be cost effective. After the Tech, Dr. Owen the Vet came in. She was very caring as well - she really listened & asked many questions. Dr. Owen had a kind & gentle approach. After a thorough exam she offered a couple of options. Dr. Owen explained everything as she went along. She was amazing, in fact the staff here was awesome, such a great place!

They took him back for an xray without an exam - never even met the vet until after the xray. Was told later by a manager this was because they were too busy and had to do it in the back? So, too busy to meet me and for an exam. Told the vet tech the paw was injured, not the leg. Then was told, because they grabbed the injured paw for the xray and he hissed, that they assumed the leg was broken and went into a discussion of finances and amputation - instead of "how about we see what the exam and xray shows first, then look at next steps and options". The leg was fine, which is what we told the vet tech before the xray. Regardless, when an owner is feeling anxious and upset, you don't jump into an amputation discussion without even an exam or xray first!! Vet tech did not know how to draw up medication and showed us the incorrect way to do so (I am an RN), she was clearly not trained and likely had been showing many customers this. Reluctantly went for a follow up visit and vaccination, to give it a 2nd chance and thinking it was maybe just a bad day for everyone involved. The vet at that visit, Dr Dylan I think (she just came back from maternity leave), was amazing and we thought - ok if we can see her we will come back for sure! However - then I contacted management to discuss concerns about our first visit and the manager was so rude, and seemed inconvenienced by the phone call and literally said to me "I am sure since your visit was a month ago (it was a couple weeks) and with the holiday stress, your memory isn't what you think it is and that's not how it happened". Wow, just wow - instead of listening to a customer's concern she was dismissing my concerns and feelings about the visit saying it didn't happen. At this point, I would NEVER take my pets to this place again and really advise you not to go here.

Very simple environment, with a plus they perform all their own blood work on premise, still Veterinarian cost are over the top! BUT we must have excellent amenable doctors whom we trust. My first appointment was free, NICE. Yet the extraction was costly and efficient ($910.00) and a live savor. Aspen, two days later is doing great. Swelling has gone down and she is playing around a bit with caution. The group is very conscientious and kind, understanding would be an understatement. Full explanations are given with care and empathy, and scheduled on time. Each time we have entered Cherrelyn there have been a host of animals, mostly dogs, some emergencies and taken full care of immediately, others wait their turn patiently with confidence. The only downside was the $$$, higher than the estimates, but the Vet and his team did save my dog's life. For when there is an upper level 3 rooted canine cracked infected tooth, the infection can and will go to the dog's brain and the results are ugly, it can and will kill them. We caught it in time. Also, I will say I did call 4-5 vets, some we had free 1st visits, procedure amounts were from $1000.00 to $2676.00 The aftermath is: Aspen is healing exponentially! Out of danger for this was as serious upper tooth extraction. And I have developed a firm trust in Cherrelyn Veterinarians, he is most compassionate and spoke firmly of his concerns. My service dog did have post-op symptoms, not wishing to eat and very running bowels, which is to be expected. Otherwise, now 6 latter, she is beginning to play and eat once daily. There is no perfect when it comes to surgeries, don't expect and costs for living these days is just simply outrageous, please so not complain, do your work and get estimates and ask lots of questions during that visit. The costs are breath taking these days, as most everything else are; yet it is a must have urgency, with confidence and a smile. Know that Aspen is healing well due to Dr. Kostner and ALL staff!! Thank you so much!

They have no comfortable place to sit (skinny…read morebackless stools), for folks to fill out the electronic adoption form which takes a minimum of half an hour. Then, after you as a customer, are kind enough to provide them with all this detailed information -- they state you will hear from them in 48 hours. WE DIDN'T. When they finally sent an email they stated that we would hear something from them within the NEXT 72 hours (business days). WE DIDN'T. I guess they justify their extremely rude treatment by their last sentence which basically says if you hear nothing from them, you can assume you did not get the cats you attempted to adopt! That is inconsiderate and rude! Their response to this review was they "claimed" they DID tell us there were other people ahead of us trying to adopt the same cat. UNTRUE! (Remember- there were two of us and you did NOT communicate this information to either one of us!) But all readers have to do is look at the multiple other reviewers who also said Almost Home has very poor communication. And, the manager's response was to agree they do have and continue to have this rude policy of failing to notify! I still say if people put in half an hour to answer all their multiple questions then surely they can send out a two minute text informing people they did not get the cat. I was even sorrier that the manager did not agree that they are rude and that in the future they will improve by switching over to a more informative process for the kind people who come to them to adopt their kitties. It appears too many of the cats at Almost Home must be adopted out as a pair which probably decreases their chance of adoption. There was a male volunteer there that seemed like he needs an education about what to say to potential adoptees. He wanted to tell us about THE ORGANIZATION from their point of view instead of providing what he should be saying to customers which is that the adoption fees are very high because it includes neuter/spay, shots and microchip. That is what people want to know so it would be nice if you spent five minutes (or less) teaching them this. As a pair of women with great veterinary care history, animals with longevity, an excellent income, our own home (main home in Colorado and vacation home in Texas) and excellent credit history, it makes me believe if they turn us down, then Almost Home has extremely poor judgement! All of our pets have always been provided with excellent vet care including all shots and even dental care. Our last kitty lived to 14 and only passed away due to renal failure. DO NOT GO TO ALMOST HOME thinking you will be able to adopt soon. They drag out the process more than what is reasonable. ALSO, DO NOT EXPECT GOOD COMMUNICATION or you will be disappointed!
