This was the second year in a row that I attended a Rochester Cocktail Revival Week event at Fee Brothers. This family owned business has been around for well over 100 years and these events have been a great chance to learn about this place and the people. The tour of their mini-museum and the factory by Ellen Fee was very good and interesting. Also this is a great place to buy Fee Bros syrups and bitters at very reasonable prices.

Do bitters need to be refrigerated after the bottles are opened? I don't know the answer to that question. But I keep my bottles of Fee Bros bitters in the fridge. I could take a photo of the Cherry and Grapefruit and Peach and Orange bitters in there. Or I could use a better photo borrowed from a retailer's web site. Site it is. I love truly family owned and operated artisan food businesses, and so it has been with Fee Bros since 1863. I didn't pay any attention at all to bitters until I discovered Fee Bros. From my perch, the "A" manufacturer (you know who I mean) was the only one making bitters and I only used them when I made Manhattans at home, which is rarely. But a couple of years ago I had a lovely cocktail at a restaurant and it was made with Fee Bros grapefruit bitters. Then a few weeks later, I had a Manhattan made with Fee Bros cherry bitters. It was amazing how just a couple of drops of these wonderful fruit aromatics transformed the character of a beverage. I was hooked. Now I add Fee Bros bitters to a number of things. As example, they also transform desserts. Or soft beverages. In everything is connected mode, try adding some homemade lemon simple syrup and a couple of dashes of Fee Bros cherry bitters to the unsweetened cranberry - marionberry juice made by Vincent Family Farm. Fee's of NY, meet Vincent's of Oregon and a happy pairing it is! http://www.yelp.com/biz/vincent-family-cranberries-bandon#hrid:XnmKDUqEVOjVyXyv9DP4oQ/src:self. There is a wonderful long story of rags to riches with drama in the mix that surrounds the Fee family's business. As only the Irish can tell a tale, it is recorded on their web site and I link it here. Make yourself a nice beverage using Fee Bros bitters and sip along as you read. It makes the story all the more intriguing. http://feebrothers.com/Page.asp?Script=3 To keep it simple, you could add some Fee Bros Peach Bitters to a glass of Prosecco - Ireland meets Italy in a glass. Perhaps better, yet use the Rochester based Fee Bros Orange bitters in a glass of Finger Lakes Region sparking wine for New York state drink. YO - how YOU doin'? Fee Bros also makes cocktail mixes and cordial syrups. I haven't gotten that far in my exploration of their product line. I've been sort of stalled on bitters for the last couple of years. It's a good place to be!

If you fancy yourself a martini drinker, and you have not met the Fee Brother's, let me tell you what you are missing. Officially, if you aren't using orange bitters, you aren't drinking a martini. Period. Same goes for a Manhattan, and a host of other cocktails. Luckily, for all our sakes, Fee Brothers has kept on producing orange bitters even as the world has forgotten about their existence. Ring them up. Find out where you can get their tincture. Put a sparing drop in your drink. And taste what you have been missing. They also make a fine lemon bitters, and their whiskey barrel aged old-fashioned bitters help round out drinks where you may have only used angostura in the past. Buy some. You will not regret it.

I especially enjoyed the rhubarb bitters and my friends all got the whiskey barrel aged bitters.
