Ohhhh my... After 1 week of tapas, we came here on our last day after yelping the keyword "salad." This place is amazing! It was hard to find (far from the city center), but well worth it! We came for brunch, so it didn't have salad at the time : ( Nonetheless, we ordered the eggs florentine (with spinach and tomatoe), the avocado toast, the greens-smoothie, and the red fruit smoothie. These were all quite refreshing and delicious, and even the greens-smoothie was good (I had my doubts when I first ordered it)! Prices are ok for Europe, so that's not an issue. read more

Prices are cheap and you get a wide selection of sides to go with your eggs, like bacon, sautéed mushrooms, onions, etc. There are pasteries if you don't want any hot foods. The coffee selection is good too. There are also magazines and new paper lying around for you to read while you wait. Entrance is handicap friendly. Located near museums, this place is uphill though, and hard to get uber from. Still come anyways! read more

Ok, sooooo, two words for this place- LIFE SAVERS! We came to this place after searching for a place to get decent ( american ) breakfast. After being in Spain for days we were ready to have a full hearty breakfast and this place did not disappoint. I got their Shauska which is baked eggs in this amazing tomato and goat cheese sauce. I added spinach and potatos to mine which came our perfect. I can see how some people would want faster service at these places but after traveling europe I come to find that they just dont rush through things, which would explain their much lower stress level, so dont come here starving. I also ordered the large latter here which was very milky but very tasty as well. If you are in the area this is absolutely a must visit. Highly recommend to everyone. Food: My wife ordered the eggs Florentine, which had the perfect combination of Parmesan creamy goodness. I had the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. Fresh spinach, perfectly poached eggs and delicious salmon. For drinks, I had a flat white and my wife had the macchiato. The flat white was amazing, much more foamy than what I'm used to in the US. Service: We were seated quickly, and the staff was very friendly. They gave us an English menu, because I'm a hopeless American tourist. The food came out sooner than expected. Facilities: The restaurant itself is bright with lots of windows. The tables are smaller, but well spaced out. It's very clean and minimalistic design. My husband and I came here for a good hearty breakfast before a long day of sightseeing. The menu has many different options which we thought was great. The waiter smelled like cooked old onions which was repulsive when he took our order and brought us our food but that was really out of our control. My husband ordered eggs benedict and I ordered the eggs with parmesan and spinach. The food was very good but very rich. The hollandaise sauce was delightful but had a lot of cream. My eggs were very good but the Parmesan was overwhelming and greasy. The best part of the meal was the fresh orange juice it was delightful. I came to Federal because a friend recommended the cafe to me as a study spot with good food. The place is nicely decorated, and was very crowded when I walked in with a friend. There were two people in front of us in line who tried to seat themselves, but then were told in not the nicest way to wait until someone came and helped them, and so they left. I then was unsure about how my experience would be. A waitress walked up to us and said there were no seats in the working area open, but we could eat first, and then move tables. She made it very clear we could not take out our laptops, which I found to be kind of annoying. We were seated and got our menus, which has has an extensive range of brunch items, hamburgers, salads, sandwiches, and drinks. I settled on the free-range grilled chicken sandwich and a mocha. My friend ordered the pancakes and a cafe con leche. The drink came our first, and were a bit smaller than expected. I took one sip of my mocha, and did not like it at all. It was so bitter, it did not even taste like coffee. The chocolate was too powdery, so it made the drink taste grainy and I was disappointed. I think my friend liked her coffee, as she had no complaints about it. Our food came out in a timely matter, which was nice. The sandwich was huge, which I did not expect. At first glance the bread slices and chicken pieces look small, but when put together, amount to a large sandwich. They also were very generous with the avocado, which was also much appreciated. I could not eat it in sandwich form because it was so big, so I use a fork and knife instead. The chicken was seasoned well, tasted fresh, and I really like the mustard-mayo type sauce that accompanied it. It matched well with the lettuce and lettuce, and the toasted bread that also tasted fresh and not dried out. The sliced almonds on the side were also a nice crunch that i personally ate separately. I surprisingly finished the whole sandwich, and was satisfied after. It was delicious and healthy. As for the pancakes, they were also a large portion size, and my friend really liked them. The only comment she had was that they were really sweet for her. My friend and I then moved to the working area, and logged on to the wifi, which was only free for one hour. As much as I loved the sandwich and would want to try the other food items on the menu, I am not I would return to Federal cafe, primarily because the customer service is lacking and not attentive. It is not worth it in my opinion to come to a place for good food, but not be able to stay and work for as long as I want or be treated nicely. read more

We were happy to find a place that had an assortment of offerings for breakfast and not just a Spanish omelette! Walking into this place reminded me of a college cafeteria or break room. Young crowd most eating while perusing a book or on a laptop. We had about a 10 minute wait and were sat at a communal style table with other guests. Service was quick and prompt, seems the goal is to get people in and out. Which is fine because our food came out quick. I ordered toast with avocado, ricotta, mint and poached eggs and it was amazing I didn't want to get to the last bite! We came in for breakfast, really wanted to like this place but.. just couldn't. The space is near, clean and over all looks nice. The service is extremely slow however... people that were seated far after us got their order/food before we could even get the waiters attention. After 30 minutes of nothing.. we left... and they didnt seem to care at all. (We were told by a patron to hunt the waiter down if we wanted to order anything which would have made sense if everyone else got the same treatment but at that point it was too late). I've been here multiple times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I have come with friends and I have come alone just to some university work and have a coffee. This is hands down one of my favorite places here in Madrid and I have had to limit myself because I was going so much. It is bright and airy with a welcoming feel. The waitress did totally forget about us and we tried to make eye contact for probably 15 minutes to get the check before she literally had to have us remind her of who we were even though the space isn't huge. We weren't her only table sitting with no service. No stars off for that though, just don't go if you have places to be. I like the Federal Café a lot actually. It's a great little place to sit down for coffee, study/work and just get in the zone. It's like a laptop haven at times where people stare in to their screens. The food is interesting and the sweets are actually really good, but oh my, how slow the service is. We were waiting for more than 20 minutes before they even attended us with the menu, then another 10 before coming back to take our order, which was really easy, waited another 10-15 for the food, only to have send one thing back which wasn't what we had ordered. So all in all, if you're not in a rush or has come there to study/work, it's a great place - but if you're just looking for a quick bite, coffee or beer, don't expect to be out of there quickly. read more
