My first experience staying in a caboose was a lovely weekend getaway. I loved the Wine Country caboose that we stayed in. The grounds are adorable, beautiful view of the lake. The room was cozy and the hot tub was great and relaxing. Breakfast was knock out delicious. The apple pie French toast was the best thing I've eaten in some time. Hosts were friendly and had great recommendations for hiking and local restaurants. I forgot my socks in the bed and they kindly mailed them back to me, no problem. I really enjoyed my stay here & look forward to visiting again! read more

First up, a heads up on this pet friendly property if bringing your pooch, and I add this as it was not something I thought of before. The steps into the cabooses are quite steep, and due to their pet policy only permitting smaller dogs (something I never quite understood, and I have rental property and rent to all sized well behaved dogs with no problems), you are going to have to probably carry your dog up and down the stairs. Have fun! Our dog was old and had cancer, which was the only reason she was below the weight restriction, so we were hauling her up and down. Fun stuff. Loved the ground and lovely, quiet location. My favorite thing was probably the tree swing. I was also a huge fan of the amazing selection of teas (neither the DH or I, or the dog for that fact, drink coffee) and complementary microwave popcorn available for our consumption. We used a Living Social deal for off season, so really, can't have any complaints about what we paid. My only minor issue was the breakfast played on one of my pet peeves--the vegetarian options were basically the same without meat, ie, not a full meal. One morning all we received was a sliver of quiche and about 6 grapes, and the next day it was something French toast like. So, when the omnivores got their meal, it was a real meal, but we were still hungry after both breakfasts. When I made the reservation I told Tony that we were vegetarian but did not think to mention that I can't eat sugar or sweets, especially as you don't eat sugar for breakfast (or should not), so my bad. It's not like there was not other food in town and I did not pass out from low blood sugar. I used the French toast to coat my old lady dog's pills and she really enjoyed it, though! Also, breakfast was later, I think 9-10am. I am a rise and shine and get movin' kind of person, so for us it probably was not worth sticking around for. Our room was the Tropicaboose, and honestly, we do not have any feelings towards Jimmy Buffet and my DH grew up in Hawaii and has no affinity for the tropics, so the decor would not have swayed us one way of the other. I really liked the two lofts that were great reading nooks. read more

What a fantastic place! After winding through the hills to get up there and missing the turn to the street the Featherbed is on 3 times, my boyfriend and i finally arrived here. And it was so much better than we had thought. Because old train cars on the edge of a Clear Lake sounds pretty cool, right? We thought so too. Then we got there ... and it felt like we wandered in a magical train candyland, with surprises around every turn. The owners greeted us with huge smiles. They are the friendliest, nicest people and made us feel so good about staying in their train cars. We had the wild, wild west room which is everything it promises to be on the website. The bathtub is awesome. As is the bar. We played cards on the bar while drinking miller high life. We ate nearby and went to a bar before coming back to the wild west for the night. Everything was perfect. Explore all parts of the Featherbed - look in all the trees and look around the dining room. There's so many small details that will keep you entertained for hours. If you go, be sure to go for a ride on the swing. it literally carries you back and forth. Seriously. Also go to the Lunchbox Museum and buy lots of cool old things that you didn't realize you had been looking for until you saw them. Like a bowling ball that has a decanter and 7 shot glasses inside. Who knew I needed that? But I do. Nice, CA really is full of nice people! read more

We stayed back in Sept for our 2 year anniversary and it was awesome! We stayed in the Orient Express which had a deck out front over looking the lake. We stayed two nights and it was so much fun. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the owners were really nice. We traveled around the lake and tried some wineries. We even found a yummy brewery in Kelseyville which will definitely be visiting again. Oh and btw... The breakfast was delicious!!!! My only dislike was the ingenuity it took for us to take a "shower" in the jacuzzi tub, it was definitely a team effort... I would definitely not want to spend more than a few days here cause I would need a real shower lol. We plan on coming back =) read more

What a unique bed and breakfast experience. We went out of our way on our wine country tour to stay here and we're glad we did! We were supposed to stay in Casablanca and got moved to Wine Country. It was so cute! We enjoyed coffee up in the little loft area and watched the sun come up over the lake. The breakfast was out of this world! Pecan bacon banana French toast....yum! We had an amazing time. We got the Living Social special and it was certainly a draw to us as we had never heard of this place before. Upon arrival we were treated very kindly by Tony. When we pulled in, we were just stunned by how beautiful the grounds were. Our caboose was "Celebrations". It is probably the least decorated and could at this point use a facelift. Still a clean enjoyable caboose and loved that it had it own dining nook. We loved sitting on the inn porch enjoying wine with the other guests. We also loved the view of the lake. It would be smart to bring your own lawn chairs to sit in outside your caboose. The view is so beautiful you will want to spend plenty of time out there. If you have a choice the Orient Express caboose is absolutely beautiful. The location with a view of the lake is perfect. The heat and air conditioning unit in the caboose worked great. The supply of wine glasses and an opener was a very nice touch. I thank Tony and Peggy for their hospitality. They work very hard to keep this place looking so great. Breakfast both mornings was good. There is Boathouse BBQ restaurant a short walk across the road. It was great food. I would definitely return here another time. read more

This is directly to the owner which I can only assume is June.. what you did today was not only completely uncalled for but extremely unprofessional. For someone that has owned this place for 5 years now, I would think you would have some concept of how to run a business. Not only were you rude & very disrespectful, but you cut me off, raised your voice, had one of the worst attitudes I've ever encountered & then hung up on me. You proceeded to ignore my phone call when I tried calling you back. If that's how you treat ppl that are trying their best to communicate with you about a situation that I had nothing to do with, then you don't deserve anyone's business. And I will make sure everyone knows just how UNFRIENDLY you really are.. & how much you REALLY care about your customers. I can only imagine what your husband has to deal with on a daily basis with an attitude like that. If anybody is thinking about booking with this woman, just know that she is unwilling to work with you if anything were to come up within the first week of cancelation. Instead of rebooking or possibly coming up with a plan to make up for the cost, she would rather ban someone for life and yell at you when you tell her you're sorry & are only trying to communicate with her a situation that has come up that is out of the customers control. And the worst part of it all... I was just the messenger. I had nothing to do with the cancelation. After apologizing.. her reply "YEAHHH WHATEVER.." Click. Try explaining yourself out of this one. This was the most amazing fun place to stay at. My husband and I just returned from a 4 day - 3 night stay. It was really a blast staying in a Caboose with a Copula and all, Loved how each caboose had a theme, ours was Tropicaboose. Jimmy Buffet all the way. Each breakfast was such a treat for it was a cheerful start for each of our mornings. We definitely will stay here again when we get the opportunity. It was also very serene and comfortable. What a unique Bed and Breakfast this is! We had heard about it from friends and finally had the chance to visit over Easter weekend. We chose the Tropicaboose - each morning we sat up in the Cupola, drinking coffee and watching the activity around the compound... We were just steps from the main house where breakfast was served each morning. The breakfasts were outstanding - special without being too fussy, one day it was a delicious French Toast and on Easter Sunday we were treated to the most delicious brunch - ham, kale and blueberry salad, macaroni and cheese, homemade cornbread... just all so well presented and tasty! June and Paul are kind and personable hosts, we enjoyed talking with them from the time of our arrival until our departure, and their dog Jake is quite the mascot... He's so sweet and well-behaved and makes you feel right at home. Some ambient music at breakfast would be the only thing I might add. June and Paul were knowledgeable about the area, and enthusiastic and helpful with ideas for things to do - everyone staying there really seemed to be enjoying themselves. This place is amazing. If I could give it 100 Stars I would. I had been searching for an experience for my partner and I. I looked on Yelp and found this AMAZING spot. My grandfather was a conductor on Southern Pacific Rail for his whole life so I grew up on trains. Never in a million years did I think I would ever have the opportunity to spend a weekend living in one. Paul and June are two very hard working amazing people at keeping this place so inviting. On the drive to Nice I was a little concerned how this place would look. Featherbed Railroad is in its own world. Nothing in this town even comes close to the look, feel and welcoming feeling you get from the first second you arrive till the second you drive away. I booked this place knowing I was going to be spending the weekend in a Caboose from the early 1900s. If you don't like antiques, the amazingness of history, good home cooked meals, green grass, views from pictures, sunsets, people who actually care about what your needs are and did I say Mamma Junes cooking??? LOL This place isn't for you. Stay home!! (I'm sure you wont be missed" I stayed in the wild wild west caboose and cant wait to come back to EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM!! Paul is such an amazing man to talk to... I stayed at leased an hour after breakfast just having amazing conversations with him. One conversation we did have that I must mention is the tires you see in the lake . They ARE NOT the tires from his car he rolled down the hill! They are placed by experts to give the large abundance of bass a safe location to lay eggs. I could go on for days giving praise to June and Paul. Instead go see for yourself just how nice this place really is.. Don't forget to book in advance.. Ill be grabbing any available room I can.. My wife and I have stayed here twice--once the night we got married, and once 10 years later! The Featherbed is fun because it's an offbeat kind of place--unique decorations in each room, and you get to sleep in a friggin train car, for goodness sake! The grounds are beautiful--very well-kept lawn, trees, etc. We sat on our "front porch" (stayed in "La Loose Caboose") and enjoyed the fresh night air for a while. We enjoyed our breakfast served by Tony and Peggy (the owners). A tasty potatoe quiche, fresh local strawberries and yogurt, and a scratch-made blueberry muffin to boot. Tony and Peggy are good, friendly folks. The surrounding area is a bit ghetto, but with a little bit of planning ahead you can find lots of nearby activities to do, so this should affect things. We ate at the Bluewing Saloon nearby for dinner. read more

My wife and I just returned from there for her birthday weekend. We stayed in the lovers caboose. You immediately are made to feel welcome by the innkeepers Tony and Peggy. Tony helped us set up a wine tour with Robert, Gluten Free cupcakes for my wife, and a nice in-caboose couples massage by Shannon. Tony even helped us get a second dozen cupcakes to take home and freeze. They were that good. Nice lead in for the breakfasts made by Tony and his lady. We were up in Clear Lake for a wedding and had a great 2-night stay. The cabooses are fun and unusual. The lake is right across a street with very few cars passing. The grounds are cool and shaded by many trees. The pool area features nice shaded cabana. There is a front porch on the main building. The setting is obvious - this place is for relaxing. The owners Tony and Peggy are very friendly and out going, with many helpful tips on the events in the area. (Next time we hope to locate the brewcycle.) The breakfast is really good. The owners Tony and Peggy mentioned the food was from local sources. Both mornings featured inventive meals using fresh, locally grown peaches. The first morning we had delicious homemade grapefruit sorbet, peach french toast, and chicken sausage. The second we had hobo eggs and potatoes, fresh peaches, and scones with homemade jam. So good. We stayed at the Featherbed Railroad during the my fiance's birthday / wine tasting trip in and around Lake County. When we arrived to this beautiful park like setting with Redwood trees with tree swing (have to ride that swing), Peggy greeted us warmly. Tony and Peggy are the owners. They run a cozy, friendly, and adorable establishment. She told us about the wineries in the area, great recommendation Peggy. Our room was what we expected according to what we saw on the website. Everything was clean and well kept. Our room had a view of Clear Lake, foothills and was charmingly decorated (as all rooms are) in "La Loose Caboose" theme, nice burgundy jacuzzi with full mirrored wall, queen bed sits under a mirrored ceiling, very romantic. we were enjoying the sunset with great wine on our "front porch" and their private pier. The next morning, Tony greeted everybody at the dining hall. He also gave us an alternate routes home with more wineries along the way. Thank you Tony, we found some great wineries. Breakfast was delicious, with homemade quiche, chicken apple sausage, great coffee, very nice touch with homemade strawberry ice cream. Definitely worth a visit if you are planning to be in the Nice / Clear Lake areas, not the cheapest place, but if you love unique / great theme rooms, good breakfast and old-fashioned Southern hospitality, this is the place for you. ps. My lovely bride wanted to do something different, and this place fit the bill perfectly. Advance reservations were a snap, and were handled the old-fashioned way: with a live, person-to-person telephone call. Nice touch. After a scenic 2+ hour drive, we felt as though we'd stumbled across a hidden sanctuary, our own rustic escape. There were no Wal-Mart's, McDonald's, or neon signs of any kind. Instead, we found a charming collection of quaint railroad cabooses, each lovingly converted into themed rooms. Featherbed Railroad is 'Glamping': glamorous camping. Our caboose featured a relaxing Jacuzzi, a large bed, and just enough appointments to be comfortable. Our front door opened onto a park-like lawn area, surrounded by beautiful trees framing a fantastic lake view. The Ritz it was not - and that's the point! We found a place to escape. Here, we were able to completely relax and shed the burdens of our daily grind. Our hosts were thoughtful, considerate, friendly, helpful, and rather interesting. The breakfasts reflect their individual style, and their concern for guest enjoyment. And suggestions for local businesses, meals, nature walks, scenic drives, and more were all spot-on. We enjoyed exploring the area - bird watching, local wineries, and a couple of local restaurants. And we appreciated at least as much the opportunity to simply unplug and lounge poolside, followed by a stroll by the lake. Thank you for an enjoyable trip! read more

Absolutely one of the most unique B&B's we have visited. The caboose room we stayed in was the Casablanca and it was nothing short of fabulous! Loved that we had the privacy of our own room, yet still had the feel of community when dining together for breakfast. June and Paul made us feel very welcomed and even accommodated our Vegan dietary needs during breakfast. The grounds are gorgeous and the view of the lake is pretty stellar! What a wonderful location for a special occasion. We spent our 26th wedding anniversary at this quaint inn and it exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Casablanca caboose and loved it. We enjoyed being able to watch the movie for the first time. The grounds have lots of places to sit and relax. They have their own private dock on the lake, which is a great place to watch the sunset. To top off our stay, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast made and served by the innkeepers the next morning. Our only complaint is that we didn't plan to stay a 2nd night, but we'll be back again! read more

My husband and I happened upon this place a year ago, and knew we wanted to come back for a stay. Well we did this Labor Day Weekend, and what an incredible stay it was. The owners are wonderful, kind and helpful. We stayed in the Orient Express Caboose. I personally thought it was the best spot, because we had a nice wood deck with chairs looking directly at the pier and lake. It was so quiet and peaceful even with the other guests who were equally as nice. Perfect place to go for a romantic stay with the one you love! We took our little hibachi and barbecued right there on the deck. The next morning we had breakfast in their dining room and wow was it wonderful and plentiful! I cannot wait to go back. My husband and I stayed here recently for my birthday weekend. The caboose was cute and snug, but had everything we needed. The heating / cooling unit in the wall was very loud and we couldn't keep it on at night. The grounds are nice, but the oak trees seem to be in some distress ad there were a lot of limbs missing and they were looking sad. When we checked in, the woman at the front desk was friendly enough, but when we asked about what to do around there and where to eat, she was not a wealth of knowledge. In fact, she told us that we could go swimming in the onsite pool. She said it's just right next door and I almost jumped in it yesterday because it was so hot. Well, my husband and I were looking forward to lounging by the pool...but when we got there, it was locked and closed for the season!!! How could the front desk not know this? They advertise "feather beds" and when I hear that, I think something lofty and cloud-like. Boy was I wrong. The feather mattress topper was so compacted that it was like sleeping on a board. I had two of the worst nights sleep in ages. My hips were so sore every morning that I had a hard time walking when I first got up. It didn't seem to bother my husband, but guys don't have hips! The breakfast Saturday was just terrible. Again, I think of a B&B with some good choices for breakfast; waffles, omelets, scrambled eggs, pancakes, fried potatoes...Not here! What we and all the other guests got was the same thing: one muffin sized frozen hash brown concoction, like frozen hash browns mixed with a little egg and a scant sprinkle of cheese, then baked. It was still watery in the center from not cooking enough of the "frozen" out of it. Along side was a miniature scone...2 small bites and this Costco scone was history, Finally, we got some watermelon balls in a small cup. Coffee and tea were available and we had a choice of tomato juice or OJ (in very small glasses). I've had so much better free breakfasts at motels - even they have waffle makers half the time and actual choices in food. To top things off, breakfast is only served between 9:00 and 10:00! I have never seen anything so restrictive! While we were in the dining room, another couple told the manager that their caboose didn't have any bath towels and they had to use hand towels to dry themselves off after their showers. The manager asked "What caboose are you in so I know who to yell at?" Really? You actually said that out loud in front of all the other diners? So not cool. I will say, they have a nice location on the banks of Clear Lake but they did not have any boats to rent like they advertised, so we were not able to enjoy the water by anything other than our eyes. Sunday, we could not face another breakfast in the dining room. Luckily I had brought fruit salad and peanut butter and jelly fixings. We were so much more satisfied with our breakfast than theirs. We would not return for a second visit. read more

ZOMG. A caboose. Honey, we can stay in a caboose! Can we go there? *Verifies price range.* Sure baby, it's your weekend. That's the conversation I had with my bf the warrior when we were deciding what to do for my bday/our anniversary. (6 months - woohoo!) And when I saw the Featherbed Railroad Company I KNEW that's where I wanted to stay. My instincts did not steer me wrong. I mean, how could they? They're cabooses at a family run establishment. What I liked: * It's a freaking caboose, people. Hello childhood! * Family oriented environment - Tony and Peggy made us feel at home. They even make their staff feel like family. A staff girl felt comfortable enough to bring in and play with a puppy that she rescued off the street. That's good people. * Tony was very attentive. He was distracted by a huge fallen tree (!!!) on the pool and forgot to turn on our water heater but once we told him it was back on in 15 minutes. Understandable reason to forget but fantastic service to fix the issue. * Grounds are nice - it was great to hang outside, and it's nicely lit at night. Reminds me of a nice backyard * The TropiCaboose (our budget friendly option) was clean and had everything: comfy bed, TV, coffee machine, fridge. Loved the headboard, white washed walls (so calming!) and pineapple pillow. Good sized bathroom, too. The warrior and I joked that we could live there for a few months. *Put wine glasses in the room. * The air conditioner worked really well - the caboose was cool throughout, except upstairs. Great on a 95 F day They even turned it on before our arrival! * They respected our privacy - a definite plus for a romantic get away. But they will do housekeeping if you ask. * The warrior likes a couple of smokes on vacation and there was a nice chill place were he could enjoy it, (AWAY from the cabooses if you don't like smoke). We could even see the stars from that location * Free wine tasting that Friday - it was a wine weekend and Tony "liked to start early." My kind of guy. * Good dinner suggestions by the guy who hosted the wine tasting. *Delicous homemade brekkie. That sausage gravy - oh me, oh my! The 9 am breakfast time was perfect for us, too. * Seriously, take their suggested directions if you don't know the area. The route your GPS wants to take you winds up and down the mountain a lot with some hairpin curves. We found that out going back. * The yellow breasted finches that came to visit us in the smoking area on Saturday afternoon. What could have improved: * More breakfast! It was so good. * Less bugs - but Tony, I know there's not much you could do about that. At least they stayed outside! * If they had wine openers (waiters helper) with their logo, I totally would have bought one. *Air conditioner was a little noisy but it worked so well that we could turn it off before we went to sleep and it stayed cool enough until morning. Also, not much the proprietor could do about that - it's not like air conditioners are silent. *Maybe a couple more creamers for the coffee machine in our room *Taking home that cute little puppy Sydney brought in during the wine tasting. * But really, not much, this place was awesome. Conclusion: If you like good company, a nice family environment, and the idea of a romantic get away in a railway car, this is the place for you. It's not your run of the mill B&B - don't expect fake English country or French Provencial. Do expect to be treated like an interesting person, enjoying your awesomely appointed caboose (with or without hot tub), and frolicking either in and around Clearlake or just enjoying your romantic getaway, if you know what I mean. ;) Yay Featherbed Railroad! Perfect getaway place for a couple. We stayed there the weekend of Feb 14th and enjoyed every bit of it. It feels secluded and cozy, like going back to the 80s. We loved the jaccuzzi and watching movies on a VCR !! The owners Tony and Peggy are very friendly, they take care of all your needs and make you feel at home. As paranormal activity had been reported at the Featherbed Railroad, a group of friends recently booked all the cabooses on a Friday night. I could not have been more impressed with the layout of all the cabooses and accommodations. Most impressive were our hosts, Paul, June, and Jake the dog. Paul and June made us feel like family and we spent the entire evening with them. And yes, there is paranormal activity (friendly) present in most of the cabooses. This place was just awesome. My wife and I stayed her for our 10th wedding anniversary and the experience as a whole was nearly perfect. Finding the place can be a little bit challenging, but the staff knows the online mapping systems and gps do a bad job, so their website alerts you. Thus, we were prepared when our gps started going a little haywire and we jumped to our notes. Problem solved. Our caboose was spacious as it could be, given the limitations of space, and the hot tub was AWESOME! The little air conditioner did the job eventually, but it did take a while to cool the room down. However, we were there at the very hottest time of the year and it was 103 outside. The staff was extremely helpful. They printed out direction for me to get to a restaurant and suggested several fun places to visit while we were in the area. Breakfast was served promptly at 9:00 and was tasty. My only complaint here was that mine was just warm. I really like my food hot, and this (crepes with ricotta and summer squash with chicken apple sausage) was closer to room temperature. The follow up dessert crepe was awesome! I poked my head into the office to let them know we would be leaving early in the morning to make an event some distance away and they offered to cook us something special and pack it for us to take, since we would miss the breakfast that day. Now THAT is service! We didn't make them go through that, but the offer was greatly appreciated. This B&B was very quiet, too. I appreciate things like that. I never remember hearing any of the other patrons. You could easily forget that anyone else is around unless you go to breakfast with them. One thing that I would love for them to do is get wifi working in each caboose. You get free wifi while you are there, but it didn't work in my room (the literature said it might not. Steel walls and I was the furthest one out from the office). They suggest you do your computing outside where you can get a signal, but I don't really like using my computer outside with the screen glare and especially with 103 degree heat. I love this place! Each room is in a converted old caboose and each one has it's own theme. Wine Country & Casablanca are two of my favorites. The jacuzzi tubs are great. You can either have a continental breakfast delivered to your dine with the rest of the customers in the dinningroom. Both options had wonderful food. read more

My wife and I have now stayed here for the second time, and we were just as pleased as the first time. Although the cabooses themselves are not a technological miracle, they are clean, comfortable, beds are great, and the innkeepers could not be nicer. They also make one of the best breakfasts around. We stayed in the Casa Blanca last year, which has a real piano in it. Since I play, we had lots of fun with that!! This time we were in the Wild West with the upstairs room. You climb up 4 steps up to a small area with windows that look on the lake and surrounding area. Great for morning coffee when its cold outside. (like this morning). One of the best things about staying here is the wide variety of stuff to do and places to eat, wine taste etc. Enjoy yourself, we did!! read more

Just came back from our 3rd year anniversary which we spent at the Featherbed Railroad :) We loved the experience - it was right on Clearlake so of course it was an absolutely fantastic view. Our 'Wild Wild West' caboose was quaint, clean and tidy. The grounds were awesome too, we very much enjoyed the little surprises around every corner. Tony and Peggy, the innkeepers, were very nice and helpful. They always had a cheerful smile on their faces and knew you by name. It was quite a delight enjoying a mid-day cup of tea on the patio while listening to the chirping birds and watching the peaceful trees on the grounds sway. Oh how I wish I could give Featherbed all 5 stars. The only things that could have made this an absolutely perfect anniversary to remember are few, but include: - Our 'Wild Wild West' room was the only one available when we made our reservation (albeit, only a week in advance) and sadly we found out why - it was one of the only two rooms without a Jacuzzi tub, so it had instantly lost some of its 'resort' flair. Also, if you look on the website pictures, all of the cabooses look absolutely fantastic and modern with exception of the 'Wild Wild West', which looks antiquey and tired (a plus, I suppose, if you're into that.) - The pool looked nice until we had stepped through the gate - it looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a few weeks... - And last, some of the in-room appliances could really use some help. The shower in the 'Wild Wild West' room was built for someone 5'5", I had to stoop down just to wash my hair. Maybe the Jacuzzi rooms had more modern showers :( All in all though, we were glad we went, and would recommend it to our friends. If we go again, we'll make sure to call in advance enough to get one of those delightful Jaccuzi rooms. read more
