Nice clean local theatre. I am on the shorter side and the seating is perfect! Never have to peak through people in front of me to see.

I was able to pre-purchase the tickets and choose out seats online which I love to do ( I hate seat anxiety) and you can even pre-purchase your food to be picked up in a little cubby by the ticket checker. I almost wish I had done that since the line for the food was so long but you would have to stand in line for alcohol purchases anyway. They sell beer and wine here along with all the standard cinema foods. I don't know if I will be back here but it was a good experience.

Really disappointed in the lack of consideration by the staff regarding their outside food policy…read more I take the bus here and often make an evening of it because the ride is about an hour each way. I get dinner and will sometimes do some grocery shopping, handle whatever else I have in the area before relaxing for the movie then heading home. The other day I had Mod Pizza which is right around the corner in the same shopping center. After dinner it was movie time and I had about half a pizza left in a to go box. The staff refused to allow me to take my left overs in to the theater. I explained my situation and I even told them I was willing to purchase a snack or a drink because I didn't want to waste the pizza but was still refused. Because I had purchased my ticket at the kiosk I had no other option but to throw away my left overs which was going to be my work lunch for the next day, a whole meal. I feel like their had to some level of nuance and understand when it comes to policies like this and a digression of maybe a manager. Really glad I didn't get groceries that day. With a community so long it's unlikely I will take the bus simply to only go to the movies and nothing else.., so it's likely I will be seeing many less movies if at all in this theater. I will say the staff was nice. I understand policies, I understand how customer service can be, they don't get paid enough to argue with people and I wouldn't put them in that position after hearing me out and still making the decisions to refuse me entry.

We got there 30 min early, as requested, and then we had to sit through about 1 hour of previews. If you need to come early to find your assigned seat, the official ads should start at that time, not the unofficial local ads. We spent probably 3.5 hours at this theatre for a movie that was 1 hr 45 min. The food and drinks all came out before the official adds even started. I wanted another drink about halfway through the movie and it was brought out with maybe 20 minutes of the movie left, so after the initial service, getting anything took a long time. During the whole movie, one of the waiters did not bend or try to lower himself at all so his head kept showing its shadow at the bottom of the screen and it took up maybe 1/4 of the screen and he did this often so we saw his head a lot during the movie. I would say with all of this in mind, the service was actually poor. At the start of the movie, the whole theatre lost power. The seats were not cushy and you had to throw your back back to recline the seats as there were no buttons and the back does not go back, the legs just pop up a little bit. We got the 2 for $35 deal, which was a good deal. The cheese fries were really good and we would get again. The chicken tenders and fries were just okay and the white cheddar pasta was grainy and not good at all. I would stick to appetizers here. Overall, we just would not visit this theatre again. I would rather spend more money to go to a much nicer theatre, stay home and wait for the movie to come out, or go to a different theatre for the same price that is closer to me that does not advertise itself as a luxury theatre, in that order.

It's the perfect brick and mortar/ walkable town experience. When I went in, I felt like I was in a different era. The building itself has so much character and such a unique layout, I felt like I was Travis Bickle from taxi driver in that scene where he gets off his shift and goes to a movie theater after (but in a wholesome way of course). It's so assuring to know that places like this are still out there. If you're a Chico local or just blowing through the town, be sure to make a stop here because you definitely won't regret it. Gone is the balcony seating and additional screens from decades before. It is now a singular 350-seat non-profit theatre run by friendly volunteers. As I write this, the theatre is temporarily closed for some needed repairs and restoration work. I seriously cannot wait until it reopens, as I come here pretty regularly with friends to enjoy the adventure documentaries that this theatre prominently features. The State Theatre is always super clean, the seats are comfortable, and there truly isn't a bad view of the screen anywhere you sit. Plus, the volunteers make really good popcorn and serve local beer and wine at reasonable prices - all to benefit this fantastic historic theater. I've seen several inspiring films here, but a recent screening of "Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche" was particularly moving for me as it was also followed by a Q&A with not only the filmmaker but also a few key people from the documentary. I really look forward to seeing more amazing films at this historic theatre and encourage everyone to check them out when they reopen!
