From there, went to an area that by way of Auburn State Theater is showing The Great Escape! The theater still being repaired, still being renovated! The Auburn State Theatre is such a treasure. Built in 1930, the historic venue is a modification of its original version. Gone is the balcony seating and additional screens from decades before. It is now a singular 350-seat non-profit theatre run by friendly volunteers. As I write this, the theatre is temporarily closed for some needed repairs and restoration work. I seriously cannot wait until it reopens, as I come here pretty regularly with friends to enjoy the adventure documentaries that this theatre prominently features. The State Theatre is always super clean, the seats are comfortable, and there truly isn't a bad view of the screen anywhere you sit. Plus, the volunteers make really good popcorn and serve local beer and wine at reasonable prices - all to benefit this fantastic historic theater. I've seen several inspiring films here, but a recent screening of "Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche" was particularly moving for me as it was also followed by a Q&A with not only the filmmaker but also a few key people from the documentary. I really look forward to seeing more amazing films at this historic theatre and encourage everyone to check them out when they reopen! read more

We came by for a showing of my daughter's film which was selected along with five other films for the Auburn Artwalk. It was a project she had done for her film class. There were six films selected and it was an Open House to the theatre. We were quite impressed at how clean and well kept this old theatre was. The theatre is used more for concerts and small venues. I'd gladly come back for other events. The theatre is small but big on character and charm. read more

The funraiser "dinner and music" at 100.00 per person was totally lame! Gets two stars since they are non profit and volunteer oriented. After all, you can't fire volunteers. Limited drinks to one per person which was NOT as advertised. Dinner? Hot dogs and Beef Strogenoff?! Pretty damn lame effort. read more

Also know as Auburn State Theater and Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center. We came here with friends to attend a Halloween performance by one of our favorite Americana bands. This is a nice intimate comfortable restored Art Deco theater. The seats are large and plush with nice legroom. I do not think there is a bad seat in the house for a live performance. It took the sound people a song or two to get the mix dialed in but the acoustics are very good. It is worth the 75 minute drive to see a show here. read more

This was our first concert at this venue. Like other reviews, the physical building was nice. It was clean, the seats looked new, and the sound system looked promising. The MC came out to tout recent upgrades, ushers were handing out their programs or handbills showing before and after photos. One thing we did not appreciate was the appeal for donations. If they need more revenue, raise the ticket price by a quarter or more. We very much appreciated his request for people to turn off their cell phones. As you can imagine this is an extreme request for people with a smart phone addiction. We were there to see Karla Bonoff supported by guitarist Nina Gerber. The concert went along fine, UNTIL Ms. Gerber was to do an acoustic guitar solo. However, before she began, she dedicated the piece she was going to do to the recent marchers for women's issues. Although, I did not support this march, I was fine with this dedication. But when she launched into an anti Trump rant, I felt this was wrong. I paid to listen to music, not a political speech. I am a Trump supporter, but even a pro Trump speech would have been inappropriate. The venue MC or staff should have interrupted her. If Ms. Gerber would spend more time practicing her electric guitar 'lead' lines and get some advice on how to adjust an amplifier or effects box's distortion parameters rather than political speeches to captured audiences she could become more proficient in that instrument. The sound system did not seem dialed in. The acoustic guitars were too boomy and the vocal microphones struggled to be heard. Even Ms. Bonoff had to ask the sound crew to make adjustments at least twice. will we go to the State theater again? Yes. Will I attend another Karla Bonoff concert? Yes! Long live old artsy style theaters showing independent films. They revamped the place with very unique seating to allow for a much more enjoyable experience and spaciousness. I have so many childhood memories at this place and the one that stands out the most is when I saw the movie "Grease" back then it had an amazing sound system and the screen looked mega gigantic. It's a little different these days but still very enjoyable. read more

Saw my first concert here last night. I know they do lots of different types of entertainment, but I've been waiting to see live music hear after seeing the pictures of the remodeled venue. The interior more than fulfills the promise made by the newly-neoned exterior. The seats are new and cushy, leg room comfortable, views of the stage excellent, and the sound superb. The decor is a visual feast of color, in some ways even nicer that the Crest in downtown Sacramento. And the location at the recently spruced up intersection of Lincoln and High Streets in sleepy downtown Auburn is so much nicer than the Crest's. Parking is plentiful. As an avid live music consumer, it's awesome to have another smallish venue to host great bands touring Northern California. IMO, this now rivals the best places to see music in the Sacramento area: the Crest, Harris Center in Folsom, and of course Mondavi Center in Davis. Recently we tried to see the Ruth Moody band here, but slow ticket sales caused a move to Sac of that show. I think word still needs to get out about what a great spot this is. Ironically, years ago when I was a commercial real estate broker, I sold this property and I've always hoped the owners would restore the theater to its former glory. Hope to see more great music here in the future! read more

We enjoyed "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad World" on the big screen here a few weeks ago. It was really enjoyable. The only negative for this older theater is that the seats weren't that comfortable. I understand the theater has so much history. I should have given this place 5 stars... If there is another good movie, we will come back and check it out read more

We froze sitting in row C seats 1&2. Beware! Venue seemed nice but getting blasted with mass quantities of cold air on a hot summer night when I wasn't wearing a parka was a drag. Bathrooms were just okay. read more

The State Theatre has become my home away from home. Recent renovations have included a beautiful neon marquee and have expanded the auditorium to a 335-seat capactiy. A wide selection of plays, movies, comedy and musical groups and even business forums basically makes the State Theater the town center. It is also run mostly by hard-working and dedicated volunteers who show up day after day, night after night, to be sure everything is running smoothly. If you are in town, be sure to visit the State Theater, or as it is now officially called, the "Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center." read more

I really do like this place because of its character. This is an old style theater with a much smaller screen than newer theatres. They have removed the rear half of the seating every other row and replaced them with little tables so you can set down your drinks and popcorn and stretch out while you watch. The concessions are not a rip off like every other movie theatre and prices are good IF you are a student. I was fairly shocked when my wife and I went the other night to see Juno which has been out of all of the big theatres for over a month and it cost $8.50 a piece. For $1.25 more a person we could have seen something new. I origionally had this place rated as a three star but my wife has just TOLD me that it is at least a 4-star. read more

Ah, childhood memories.... I have to admit, I do like the fact that the multiplex opened up because it's nice to have the selection, but I do miss that small town theater feel. I even remember my first date at this place! I'm glad at least that this place didn't meet the same fate as the Auburn Cinema's did. read more
