We had THE best time getting our open water cert with Chris at Fathom Five! We did our pool sessions at home and did the open water dives with them. Not only do I feel super comfortable with the skills, but we did well enough on them that Chris turned 4th cert dive into a fun exploratory dive. Great dive operation. Hooked up with this company at the Scuba Show in Long Beach. Set up a boat dive to Niihau for this trip. People at show couldn't have been more accommodating. However while in the islands we had bad weather building, F5 sent text updates and screen captures of the weather, we got blown out. F 5 immediately started to arrange diving for us later in the week. We booked a two tank boat dive. Dive, greeted by Ema, very personable and pleasant. We were divided into groups of 6 and assigned boats by experience, very nice, it allowed for a more pleasant trip. Capt Tom, great personality and did a good safety briefing, he always was aware of divers locations and preaches safety. DM Carlos was a Pro, great dive site briefings, identified fish we may see and then guided our dives. Finally, they let us dive our computers, you never had to surface with 1000 PSI. BEWARE, DO NOT BOOK IN ADVANCE!!!! AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE! We were very disappointed with our experience with fathom five divers in Kauai. My husband had booked a couple days ahead and unfortunately, the day he was supposed to dive, Hurricane Lane was moving closer and closer to the islands. We were on our honeymoon, so had to get off the islands and back home since we had to fly to one of the other islands to get home, and after going in early the day he was supposed to dive, the worker at the shop showed us that the hurricane was heading straight for the islands, so we had to cancel the dive. I called to speak with the company several times and they didn't get back to me for three weeks, then TEXTED me a response that they'd refund us $30 of $200 we had put down and a "stand-by" dive. What a joke! They had no regard for our safety and said they'd "never refunded people" if they were within 24 hours of their dive no matter what (unless they called off the dive), so I would NOT recommend booking in advance if you're considering booking. read more

Such a great time with Five Fathom! I was a little nervous having not been diving in several months but Bahar and Cappy put me at ease. They're both very safety and fun oriented! Fabulous company with amazing staff and team! Long story short we had a snafu with another company and by synchronicity ended up at the dive shop. It was an important day because we were celebrating my mom's 70th birthday, and we were sad the other one didn't work out. When Ashley heard the story she made it her mission to make our mom's birthday the best ever! She was able to secure a special booking for whale watching and sunset cruise with their company. We went out on a boat with Captain Phil and Bahar... it could not be more amazing! Bahar was beyond accommodating, making sure our mom was comfortable, catered to and enjoying. Captain Phil did a great job taking us to see some whales that we spotted and a couple of turtles, along with a multitude of birds! Bahar shared with us some stories and history about the island. It was one of the highlights of our trip and really made by mom's birthday a success!! They even saying happy birthday to her and gave her a gift of a Pooka shell necklace! Did a fantastic 2-tank dive off Koloa Landing with Behar. The dive site was really easy access (kinda rocky walking to the launch in full gear, but I am a bit of a tenderfoot) with varied underwater terrain. Lots of big coral heads and TONS of critters - varied species of fish, sea stars, the biggest turtles I've ever seen (heeyyy ladies!), several species of eel, invertebrates, etc. Behar's enthusiasm was completely contageous and she used her slate to communicate all sorts of sealife. I don't think we went deeper than 42 ft, so wonderfully long, leisurely dives. Would absolutely dive with Fathom Five (and her) again! read more

Jeannette is awesome. I registered their boat trip with two tanks, but it was my first boat dive and I did not know that I was sea sick. I gave up right after I dove all the way down in my first dive and started throwing up all the stuff in my stomach. The DM dropped me off on the shore after seeing me continuing throwing up with nothing left in my stomach. I emailed the dive shop about my experience and wanted to see if I can get at least my last dive back. My friend who had more experience told me that if I gave up a boat dive trip I shouldn't expect anything back. But Loni was very nice and he put me on the next day's refresher course and a shore dive with Jeannette. Jeannette and I met the next morning, she showed me and the other lady the whole process again with detailed explanation. Then we went for a 1:1 dive for about 50 minutes. It was awesome. I saw six turtles (my friend counted 9 in my video). Jeanette also explained to me why I went up in the middle of the dive. I felt I learned a great lot through this experience diving 1:1 with Jeannette. I cut this video from the clips I took under the sea. It was Koloa Landing. If you are at the island I highly recommend this shore dive even if you will register a boat dive. I saw a 200 year old coral reef, many many turtles, moray, and fish. Found this place through the Kauai Revealed book. They are as good as the book says. Chad was with us during our shore dive. I had never gone before and was nervous, scared, had anxiety about the whole thing. Chad took his time to explain that everything was going to be fine and how it all works. The driver and shop workers were also reassuring me that I had nothing to worry about, but that being nervous was perfectly normal. So we get to the dive site, suit up and get the briefing before we gear up and hit the water. Once in the water I follow Chad's instruction but I remain nervous. He stays close to my wife (a certified diver) and I (a complete novice who occasionally gets sea-sick) to make sure we are able to get our fins on in the swells since we are walking into the water. We eventually get our fins and masks on and have to swim out about 100 yards to a buoy. This is where I start to freak out a little. You have to get used to having the ability of your face being in the water while you breath. It's unnerving. Especially when the pack you have on basically does not allow you to lift your head up like you naturally would to gasp for air. The valve from the tank is basically behind your head, holding your head in the water. I flailed trying to get on my back a couple times and it's probably where I strained it a little bit. I only felt it the next day, slightly. Eventually we get out to the buoy and we have to do the skills tests at a depth of 5 ft under water. So you'll have to remove and replace your respirator, remove and drop the respirator and get it back to your mouth, and then clear water from your goggles. Wife went first and nailed it, of course. Chad came up at the surface and asked if I was ready. I was not. At this point was was close to having an anxiety attack. You cant see the bottom (even though it's rather close once you realize it), the bubbles from your breathing underwater is extremely loud and can distort your vision, and you have to breathe underwater. Chad kept his cool and just told me to put my face in the water and breath on the respirator until I was ready, no rush. So I did and eventually I calmed down and was comfortable enough to go down 5 feet for my skills test. We get down and one by one I finish my skills test and think to myself that it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. So we go up to the top, and regroup with my wife and decide its time to go all the way to the bottom of that rope that was attached to that buoy. Again, I started to panic, when my wife and Chad reminded me there was no rush and that they would meet me at the bottom. "Umm, bottom of what.." I thought. This was all very foreign to me. Yep, they meant the bottom of the ocean. So they started their dissent and i see them go down and I breathe with my face in the water at the surface and they stop getting smaller. Turns out they were already at the bottom and I could still see them. Made it a lot easier to follow their lead. So I get down there and it's just beautiful. We start to swim and Chad is pointing out wild life and we see a couple turtles swimming. It was amazing. Eventually we start to run out of air so we head back. Thankfully we got a 2 tank dive. The first tank was mostly spent on training, so the second tank was all fun. We take a quick break on land then gear up again for the second tank dive, which was much more fun. We saw sleeping sea turtle, lots of coral, eels, and tropical fish every where. I love SCUBA diving now and can't wait to get certified. Highly recommended. read more

We booked ahead of time with Fathom Five, and we were not disappointed! We ended up renting some equipment because we couldn't bring it all with us. Our boat captain was Greg, and our divemaster was April. Both were fantastic! I loved April's Irish accent, too. :) The staff was super-accomodating to us, especially in light of some recent health issues that my wife had, which made us unsure of whether or not she'd be able to dive. But they helped us out, and she was able to do both dives at 60+ feet, yay!! Not sure how I feel about falling off the boat backwards into the water, though, haha (I prefer "walking the plank"). We got to see lots of sea turtles (a favorite of ours) and other sea life, and the visibility was pretty spectacular. Kudos to Greg and April for taking such great care of us! read more

This review is a long time coming. If your intuition is telling you something is wrong, don't dive. Hannah was our instructor at Koloa Landing. When I dropped down to our starting spot, I didn't feel right. I rushed back up to the surface and forfeited my dive. My husband continued on my insistence. Hannah led him and he had a great time. We'd paid for a 2nd dive that day, but I told them I wasn't going to dive, I'd just enjoy the sights in the boat. I didn't know why I was feeling off. The boat captain was Charlie. He's a bully. When we got out on the water he started talking to me like I was the dumbest woman he'd ever met--misogynistic bs. The group went in the water (again, my husband had a great dive) and meanwhile, on the boat, Charlie ignored my presence. It was REALLY weird and awkward. Fast-forward to when I arrive home and go see my doctor--ultimately I'm diagnosed with a Cerebral Cavernous Malformation (a type of brain tumor) and resulting Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. So yeah, trust your guy when you're diving and don't let anyone like Charlie bully you into getting in the water. I could've passed-out underwater, but I trusted my gut that something was wrong. read more

I have to say that our dive did not meet our expectations. After the first dive I handed my bcd and tank to your captain while holding on to the boat ladder. Lifting up the tank he allowed it to smash my thumb between the tank and the ladder. This was not entirely his fault as the seas were a little rough, but I do believe he was mostly responsible. We all found him to be somewhat clumsy and unconcerned handling the equipment and moving around the boat. He was a reasonably nice person and we haveno personal complaints about him, but I do believe that a more conscientious person would not have allowed this accident to occur. After nursing my thumb for two weeks I decided I had to have an X-ray which showed that it was broken in two places. Fathom Five's response was "sorry". read more

ZERO STARS!!! Do not dive with them!!!! Don't risk spoiling you dive trip to Kauai. The worst customer service interaction I have ever had, dive or otherwise. I live on Oahu and have been out to Ni'ihau before with Bubbles Below, they were good, but they were already booked. I Made my reservations by phone with Gabe a few weeks before I was to meet my friend and dive Ni'ihau. I received an email confirmation and everything. I flew over the day before and stopped by the office to check-in and we were told the Ni'ihau trip was not happening, didn't we get a call. No, we didn't get a call, upon further investigation, we were told by Randi that we weren't listed for the dive anyhow. How can that be I asked, since I had an email confirmation? We were told that they have "the worst computer program in the world' and that what happens sometimes is there can be two different calendars set up. "Sorry, but the boat isn't going anyhow because of some part that needs to be replaced". Randi seemed surprised that we were somewhat upset, but offered to put us on a boat the next day for a local two tank dive in the afternoon at no charge. After some reluctance on our part to trust them with our lives, we said o.k., that might make us a little less upset that you lost our reservation entirely and had flown to Kauai for nothing. Then once Randi took our information and told us our dive masters would be Charles and Lindsey, she said told us she could do one of us at no charge and the other at half price. Whoa! What happened to no charge? Since you totally and utterly screwed up. We were told she would have to check with the owner before she could do us both at no charge. Ok. I said do that and let us know. I got a call back from an hour or so later telling me that the owner said they could do "two for one". This is just getting worse. I told her I'd talk it over with my friend and let her know. Then I booked a two tank dive for the next day with Seasports as I didn't feel like these clowns a penny and had doubts about their competency. Later that evening hours later I received a call from them ranscribed as follows: "Hey E This is Shawn with fathom five divers, hey I was told by Randi to give you a call just to let you know uh, unfortunately that the afternoon boat will not be going out um, so, just wanted to give you a heads up on that, I know that you and H were gonna go, it just doesn't look like its gonna work out that way, so, um, hopes alls well, if you have any questions or anything like that you can call Tyler here at the shop in the morning, allright, talk to you then, bye." No sorry for screwing up your trip??? and then falling way short when trying to make a feeble attempt at a consolation dive. These folks seem to have forgotten the most important part about taking the reservation, and that is HOLDING THE RESERVATION !!! Apparently due to their listing in Kauai Revealed, they have plenty of new business and don't need to take care of their kama'aina repeat clients. I have been diving with commercial dive operations on each of the islands over the past ten years and have never experienced anything like this. I understand that diving is weather dependent and trips can be cancelled, but much like it is with airlines, we are far more forgiving for weather related problems than with equipment failures or overbooking or lost reservations. I can't quite comprehend any of the positive reviews for Fathom Five. read more

We dove with Fathom Five in 2008, based on a guide book recommendation. We had such a good experience that we dove with them again this past week. What we like is that they only take a maximum of 6 people on their chartered boat dives. They are very well organized and friendly, and provide a very relaxing experience. I did 12 dives with these guys and they took great care of me and everyone on the boat. They do have a no frills boat but they only allow 6 divers... no crowds. Pat and Charlie and great captains that fill you with stories as you do your surface interval and all of the dive masters were knowledgeable and take the time to make sure everyone feels comfortable. read more

Not impressed, in May/2013 my wife and I booked a dive trip with Fathom Five. We gave our deposit gladly and obligated an entire day to them. The night before the dive we got a phone call from one of the employees at the dive shop saying our trip was cancelled due to a boat malfunction. We called back the next day and inquired further about the cancelled charter trip, the second customer service person told us they cancelled our charter because a higher paying charter came a long after the fact, thus canceling us. Not cool! wasn't even offered a discount on a trip on another date. Left a bad taste in our mouths. read more

Koloa Landing Shore Dives I am so grateful that our first dive on Kauai was with Karin at Fathom Five. With hundreds of dives under my belt I was nervous. It had been two years since our last dive. Even after reviewing diving basics, safety procedures, gear, hand signals and the entry to the Koloa landing site--I remained nervous. Once we were at the dive buoy and everyone was ready to go down---I froze!! I had never felt like this before--I am usually upbeat and fearless. My self-confidence was shaken. Karin's incredible patience and her well-chosen encouraging words helped me "get it together"! The dive was as beautiful as she had described! The second dive I went down more quickly Thanks Karin. Really. The staff at the dive shop were fabulous too! Boat dive to Beach House Arch and Sheraton Caves April and Greg My husband and I went on a two tank boat dive with Fathom Five on a beautifully calm day--very little surge and wind. April was our Dive Master and Greg was our Captain. They were both super positive and both had a great sense of humor. This encouraged a calm and comfortable atmosphere. Both made a point of engaging each diver in our group in conversation. The verbal repartee they shared was hilarious and entertaining! Communication between dive masters at Fathom Five was evident--It was clear Karin from our previous days dive had communicated with April regarding our skills prior to our boarding. Yea!! On the previous dive I had been a bit nervous (make that, very nervous) and had over weighted myself. April took the time to speak with me about my weight and delicately addressed my nervousness the previous day so I was not embarrassed about it. She took time each diver to discuss their gear, weight and experience. It was clear that her experience with groups of different levels and abilities was a forte. She made every effort to be helpful but didn't baby you. It was clear her goal was to facilitate you in being the very best diver you could be After discussion with the group about what each wanted to see--April and Greg chose Beach House Arch and Sheraton Caves. Both dives were beautiful, we saw lots of fish, turtles, and many other ocean creatures! The swim throughs on the second dive were incredibly fun!! The two young women who helped us at the dive shop were also great. My husband and I went to Kauai for our honeymoon. Since he is not certified, we tried the "Introduction to Scuba Diving" course for beginners and did a 2-tank shore dive. They have a smaller boat which is really nice because u don't wanna dive with a ton of ppl, takes too long and ppl who don't know what they're doing will always run into you. We were doing our open water certification dives with fathom five and they were fantastic. KC was our instructor and was great with my two kids and me. Great, effective, communication. We went thru all the required skills and still were able to see some beautiful fish. Good snacks between dives too. KC kept it light and fun and still kept the attention of my 13 yr old. The dive guides (Nick, Casey and Lonnie) were magnificent. All three were expert divers and excellent guides. They were knowledgable and passionate about diving and ensured our safety.  We had a little glitch in one of our bookings, and Lonnie the store manager more than adequately resolved the issue in a prompt manner. Had a wonderful time on two dives with Fathom Five. Haven't dived for ten+ years so a quick 20 minute refresher was helpful and to the point and worth a little extra fee. Nick was our dive master and was excellent. He clearly knows his territory and is a pro. Very helpful, upbeat, low key, wants to make sure people get whatever they came for. Asked many times if any one had any dive destination ideas or requests; frequently checked in to make sure everyone was enjoying. Identified just about every creature in the ocean. Tom was a great boat captain. Integral in prepping us before the giant leap off the boat and made the entire day as effortless as possible for the divers. You basically get your suit on and just sit on the back of the boat. He puts your gear on and you're off. At the end of the day he and Nick take care of all the cleanup. A real way to dive on vacation. For two dives averaging just over 45 minutes each, full gear head to toe to rent, and water and snacks included the price was more than reasonable. Also, the gear and boat were in great shape. The real important gear like the BCs, regulators, etc. seemed brand new. The fins and snorkels and wet suits were also in great condition. Saw tons of turtles, giant schools of fish, eels, crabs, starfish, and traversed lava tunnels. Will definitely dive with them again in the future. read more

Highly recommend to new divers. This was my first dive and the experience was life changing. The staff was wonderful and Karen, my PADI instructor, was outstanding. She helped me get through my primal fear of inhaling underwater with her calmness, patience, and words of both logic and emotion. Once I overcame my fear (a win in itself) it was like being born into a new world. We saw many beautiful creatures and she used a board to write down names as we swam, then educated me further up top. We went for a two tank dive and I could have done more. My friend and I did Tunnels Beach, Koloa Landing and a boat dive. This dive shop is the best on the island. Very knowledgeable dive masters.
