Today we just about finished our last pack of bacon from Father's. I had made a last order, and gifted some to family, when we learned about their Retirement Sale last spring. It was a bit heartbreaking, since gifting Father's bacon was a tradition my own dad had started in our family. I took it over a couple years ago when he passed. Now the tradition comes to an end. We're enjoying the last smoky bites of it over the holiday, and fortunate enough to to have my kids in town for the week, so they can have some of our last stash of Father's bacon. read more

I grew up on Smithfield (Virginia) country hams, and switched to Father's Country Hams after reading a positive review in a magazine. I must say that the review was spot-on as it's one of the best country hams that I've eaten. Everyone, please remember that country ham is supposed to be SALTY, if you don't like salty ham then you need to stick with a different type. read more

Well... Easter dinner was a disaster. I too saw how highly rated Fathers Country Hams were, so I ordered a spiral sliced honey glazed ham from them. I had such high hopes. It arrived okay and we stored it in the refrigerator as instructed. Sunday arrived, we heated as the information said to, but noted a slight funky smell to it. I figured it was just part of the curing process and moved on. The ham was so salty it was inedible. Everyone at the table who tasted it nearly spit it out. There was no way we could salvage the ham, so the whole thing went into the trash. Luckily my son brought mini-sized meatballs for an appetizer so that became the main course. I have never been more disappointed with on online food seller. Do these people ever taste-test their products? I would have given it no stars if I could. read more

I wanted to buy some smoked "sack" sausage, but I couldn't find any locally so I decided to look online for a source. I came across the Father's Country Hams web site, and they had the kind of sausage I was looking for. Even though I was a little bit iffy about buying uncooked meat online, I decided to give it a try. I ordered two 2-pound rolls of smoked sausage. I now realize I made a mistake in doing that. I should have ordered at least five rolls! Since I have not been able to find smoked sausage locally for quite a while, I don't have any recent experiences to use as comparison. Without being able to remember the exact flavor of the last, good smoked sausage I had, I still think it is safe for me to say the Father's brand sausage is some of the best I have ever eaten. It is delicious! It slices easily, cooks up well without creating a lot of grease or splatters, and it smells great while it is cooking. There is a slight hint of spiciness to it, but definitely not enough to consider it hot sausage. I'm glad of that. I can't eat spicy foods, so this fits well with my dietary requirements. The next time I want to buy smoked sausage, I know exactly where I'll go to get it. And I won't even have to leave my house. read more

Extremely disappointed. I read on Southern Living that Father's Hams were the top rated. So, I ordered one of their spiral cut honey hams. Expecting a sweet glaze, I was surprised when all I could taste was salt. No sweetness to the glaze whatsoever. If I wanted just a country ham, this would be great. However. If you advertise a honey glaze, you expect some sweetness. Imagine my guest's surprise on Christmas Day when they took a bite and it was salty. I did reach out to them to ask if they sent tge wrong ham. I received this..."Sorry you were disappointed in your Honey Glazed Spiral Sliced Country Ham ." Needless to say, it was my first and last ham from Father's Hams. Buyer beware if you order this ham. Itis not sweet like a Honey Baked Ham. read more

I have ordered from Father's in the past and I just want to stick up for them, to counterbalance some negative reviews. Dear folks who are not from the South or who don't understand what country bacon is, In days of old, before refrigeration, smoking and salting hams and bacon were the only ways of preserving pork, from slaughter in autumn, through the winter and through hot summers, 'til the next autumn. This process prevented spoilage and eliminated attack from insects. In time, these hams and bacon developed a tangy and yes, salty, flavor that Southerners and the rest of the world (Italy: prosciutto and Parma hams. Spain: Iberico and Serrano hams) found delightful. In small quantities, folks! All of these pork products are supposed to eaten in moderation or thinly sliced, not by the plateload like typical (bland, characterless) American pork products. This being said, Father's and a number of other country ham and bacon producers produce their products painstakingly the old-fashioned way for those who enjoy those flavors. So this is what you'll taste, and hopefully grow to enjoy (in moderation!): strong smoke and salt and a unique pork flavor that goes well in BLT's, ham biscuits or just by itself. If you're afraid of that salt, soak your hams in water a little longer, changing it regularly. I'm not sure if you can soak bacon, but I wouldn't want you to, actually. This bacon is just awful. Bacon is heavily smoked (got to be artificial) and salted. After a BLT sandwich, my mouth still tastes like a smokehouse. I would not buy this again. I do not recommend it, unless your gift is an obligation to someone you really don't like. Next day: the artificial hickory smoke smell is still in my apartment. I ordered one of their bacon samplers. They were virtually inedible. Way too strong in smoke flavor. They are delivered unrefrigerated probably because of all the preservatives which probably contributed to the strong taste. We gave up after cooking 2 1/2 packs. The rest sit in my fridge. I didn't file a complaint until much too late. They didn't reply. Live and learn. read more

My mom was from western Kentucky (Mayfield) and my family would go back there every year to see my grandparents and the rest of her clan. Father's Country Hams brings back one of the wonderful memories of those trips. I ordered a full ham (14lbs.) and had my butcher cut it in half for me and almost demanded a slice for having to endure the glorious smell of it. I split the ham with a friend and we cooked each half in different styles. What a joy! If you don't want a fully smoked and traditionally salted ham, then you're not looking for a country ham anyway.
