Gave this two shots, and won't be going back. The burgers themselves are not that great. Menu descriptions of the burgers have 3-6 ingredients listed, but what's not said is that most of the ingredients are either ground into the patty, or ingredients are incorporated in a sauce or spread on the bun. Don't be surprised when a simple bun and a patty shows up instead of a the decorated burger you thought you were getting. The garage gimmick doesn't work. The place feels empty and cold, like you're literally eating in a Jiffy Lube after the lights have been turned off. Go to Newt's instead. read more

Totally solid meal after a long day on the road driving cross-country. We showed up on a Saturday evening and Fat Willy's was exactly what we needed. The fun decor perked us up (plus I'm more happy to support anywhere that supports the military AND local business) and the servers were absolutely lovely without being over-bearing or creepy-nice. The drink specials were spot-on and the food was solid. My husband had a pork tenderloin sandwich which can really only accurately be described in emojis and my taco salad was fresh and delicious. 100% recommend to anyone passing through or who lives in Rochester! read more

We will never be back. The restaurant was dirty. There was food all around our table, I don't know how many time the servers walked past a knife that was laying on the floor, finials after being there for 30 mins the knife was picked up. We ordered their wing special, when it came out there was 7 maybe 8 boneless wings. They were okay at best. It did take a while to get our food when we did you could tell that they use dozen patties. The burgers were dried out nothing special. When asked about the special, our server did not even know they were on special and when she corrected it there was only a 50 cent difference, to me that is not a special. I do believe this place has potential, if they were to use fresh products. I have no problem paying $12.00 for a burger if I know the products used are fresh. Ordered the Flat Tire which is the only entree' option available for a vegetarian. Close to the grossest thing I've ever attempted to eat. Since the item was named Flat Tire and was a portabella mushroom, I mistakenly assumed this would be a portabella mushroom cap. Would make sense, right? Instead, it would have been more aptly named "The Blow Out". This was 5 thin strips of mushroom that looked about a month old (marinated in dirt flavoring??) with big chunks of hard cucumber (maybe try slicing your cukes, you could bust a lip on those rocks) I believe it also contained a limp tomato and lettuce but since I was unable to consume it due to having taste buds, I simply cannot recall. If you are looking for a good burger you likely find it here. They have plenty of creative burgers, not that I would actually try peanut butter on my burger, along with a burger of the month. The waitresses, both times I have been here, were friendly and helpful. The burgers are cooked and seasoned well. The fries are tasty and they keep your glasses full of your favorite soda. The business is clean and attractive. They could use a few more TV's. I would not suggest Fat Willies if you are going with a group to watch a sporting event. From where we sat we had to strain just to catch a glimpse of the final Twins playoff game of the year. A few more and bigger TV's in the main dining room would help. I really had a hard time picking three of four stars for this place. I really would like to give it 3.5 stars, if that was possible. My first burger was not nearly as good as last nights burger but that first experience influenced my ranking from four to three. read more

One of my fav restaurants to visit when I am in town. Staff is friendly and the food is good. I always get the pulled pork sandwich and onion rings and it's one of my favorite meals. It is reasonably priced and in a good location. It is right across the street from my hotel. read more

Had a craving for a burger on our way through town. We definitely selected the correct choice with Fat Willy's. Hamburgers pattied in-house with bakery buns. What else could you want? Get the warm homemade applesauce as a side. The waitress was right when she said it was "apple pie without the crust." We were thoroughly entertained while we waited for our food by reading trivia questions to each other and then searching for the answers in the advertisements printed within the tabletop. This is a restaurant in search of some organization. It seems like no one is in charge, and it's easy to become invisible to the waitstaff. I'd been here once before and had had a pleasant experience (hence two stars rather than one), but this time was very unsatisfying. After I sat down, I was totally ignored, just like the other customers, none of whom appeared to have food even though it was lunch time. Great local place with nifty garage diner decor. The shrimp po' boy was not what I expected, it was more like a shrimp cake, but it was delish with big chunks of shrimp. And the chili and cheese, on the fries or hot dog, totally take me back to high school concession stand days (which is a good thing!). Fat Willy's is has a car themed atmosphere, probably about 4-5 flat panel TVs, a prominent bar with probably about 8-10 on tap beers. There is complimentary self-serve popcorn and I think a pull tab machine for those interested in that sort of thing. As an Iowan, I also appreciate their subtle nod's to the Hawkeyes. Something that takes some bravery in Gopher country. The menu: I have been here probably about 6 or 7 times and I have tried several of their burgers, which all have some fairly interesting combinations. Some of these toppings/ingredients include chorizo, fried onion rings, jalapeno's, house made horseradish, blue cheese, ground pork, mushrooms, etc. Overall, I would say I like these burgers better than Newt's which has the reputation of being the "best in Rochester". I guess I think they are good but not incredible. I find myself wanting to combine different toppings that are not on the menu and they have been accomodating when i have done that. The french fries here are really good. They are crinkle cut, which i usually find sort of soggy and bland, but Fat Filly's fries are consistently crisp, even slighly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They also have a variety of house made sauces and gravies. My wife likes their brown gravy. I like their house made key lime mustard sauce. The other menu items include a BLT (which my wife loves and orders every time), hot dogs, nachos, french dips, wings, etc. They also serve breakfast on the weekends and that menu looks very good, but i haven't had the chance to try it yet. The portions are plentful, especially the fries. The service is another reason we like to go here. We get the same server almost every time and she is just a very sweet lady and she always remembers us and knows what we want. It can get kind of busy and so refills and such sometimes aren't very quick, but the food always comes out quick, hot and correct, which is great. Overall, of the Rochester Bar food scene, I prefer this place over Beetles and Newts for sure...I do think that Chester's has a better burger, but Chester's is more of a trendy contemporary restaurant which is a completely different vibe that Fat Willy's. read more

The beer selection is good with Surly Furious on tap. The salad was fine but served in too small a bowl with a plastic medicine cup containing salad dressing. Food was excellent, service not so much. Waitress took her time coming originally and coming back. Side didn't come with one of the meals. Never got asked if we wanted any of the optional toppings or what type of bun. We got over charged and when asked about it told the brake shoe burger we ordered didn't get a side. Should have asked to see the menu, while driving away looked at the menu online and it doesn't say that the brake shoe doesn't get a side...disappointing for sure. Walked in to drab decorations and several employees, hopefully off the clock, sitting at the bar doing car bomb shots with each other and breaking the glasses on the bar as the bartender had a blast watching. Our waitress was a little preoccupied watching. Reading the menu is a chore in itself. All the items are named with ridiculous names making you waist time reading every single item's description. I ordered some kind of sausage burger that was by far nothing to write home about. Our waitress was more interested in going home and actually started sweeping while we were eating and moved the chairs from our table to get under the table. This is my pet peeve! My husband and I count Fat Willy's as our favorite restaurant in Rochester. I love Rubin sandwiches and FW's has a great one. My husband loves their shrimp and horseradish burgers. Prices are reasonable and the service is excellent. Free popcorn is a plus. read more
