    Real Chief's Fans!

We visited Fat Matt's because of a review I read on here. I wanted to second all the good things said earlier. The patrons all speak and make you feel welcome. It was game day in KC and the regulars had brought food to share and offered some to us. We enjoyed watching the Chiefs with real fans and they even cheered (tongue in cheek) our Cowboys for the second game. We'll be back to see our new friends whenever visiting KC. One more thing... bring cash or a debit card for their ATM. Cash only, but you won't need much. Cheapest drinks we've seen!

    Awesome local watering hole..

Soooo..a few coworkers were in town and noticed an art festival was happening in the area and we decided to partake. The festival was amazing but soon enough we needed libations. The first person we asked about indulging in an adult drink, or three, directed us to Fat Matt's Vortex - just two blocks away. We walked in and were greeted very warmly by the bartender and the folks hanging out were all great to conversation with. We indulged in a few drinks and returned to strolling through the fair and taking in the amazing local custom. I promised myself next time my travels take me to KC I'll make a longer pit stop at this great local gem...

First, I must mention how I am utterly shocked that I am first to review Fat Matt's instead of Scott M, dive bar King of Kansas City. Now, on to my review. On a rather desolate block in KCK, Fat Matt's is the quintessential dive bar, except for the following: -the bartender is a young, attractive guy instead of a sage "barkeep" hovering around 60 years old or no nonsense "barmaid" of the same age. Keep in mind that both of these individuals would have "given up the sauce" a decade ago. -there is not a trio of regulars sitting at the corner of the bar who fit the following description: old man with a full head of white hair and big red nose, "hot" woman in her fifties with teased hair wearing a denim mini skirt who shares an unclear relationship with old man #2 who is less old than old man #1 but he cannot handle his alcohol quite so well either. That aside, Fat Matt's is the real deal, has an interesting history, and if you're good, they'll take you down to the basement where you can look at the old brick crematorium in the basement.

Delightfully fun dive bar! The beer and alcohol selections were great. Fun atmosphere of hilarious regulars. The building is old, but everything was really clean. A gem on the KS side, we will go back again.

The owner Logan is hands on and extremely friendly and welcoming. Great bartending showmanship and top-notch customer service skills. Hooray. The decor is old school with dark lighting. A large bar, a small stage area, 2 booths and a couple more tables for seating. A pool table and a large backyard patio area with a fire pit and a secondary bar for those busy summer weekends. DJ Bazooka Joe was spinning his collection of 45's from Rock and R&B's early days and kept the vibe hopping. I couldn't think of a better musical selection and DJ to keep everyone entertained. The regulars that I interacted with were as friendly as the owner. This will be my first stop and probably last stop on my next trip back to Strawberry Hill for some libations. As good as it gets.

I respect the rule that The Bartender is God, so normally I would not write a review about a bar that would not serve me. But Dixie's is one of two such places where the refusal was done in such an unnecessary manner that it warrants a writeup. My friends and I had been warned by other bartenders several times throughout the day that Dixie's is the hardest dive bar in KCK to get into, but we had to try. Like most of the clubs further in-town in KCK, you have to be buzzed in. We managed to get in the door, but then faced the Grand Inquisition. We were grilled not only by the bartender (a middle-aged blonde-ish woman) but also by a customer at the end of the bar. "Check their membership cards! They don't belong here! Throw them out!" he kept shouting as the bartender nagged a Mexican family who also were not members. We tried to ask the bartender how to become members, and she huffed that it was none of our business and she didn't have to tell us. The customer at the end of the bar raised his voice again: "They don't belong! Call the police!" This wasn't necessary at all, we had respected the rules everywhere we have been and we were already leaving, but this customer was being way too much of an asshole about it. So, noticing that this guy was reading a new book that one of my friends had just finished reading, my friend leaned over his shoulder and whispered the ending into his ear as we left. "That's what you get for being a jackass," my friend added as we walked out the door.

I imagine full-heartly that Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson would approve of Lucky Boys and could be found clandestinely puffing on a cigarette in the back by the now defunct cigarette machine. It is dark, dare I say a tad bit dingy, and I don't think they serve PBR, but Hamms is definitely offered. It's that kind of place...cold cans of beer aren't paired with a glass, and that's just okay. Just in case you're a tap beer person, be warned they almost exclusively carry LogBoat taps which are out of Columbia. So, if you aren't familiar with LogBoat Snapper IPA's, my personal choice, then you may be trying something new you aren't familiar with but, you won't be getting a domestic on draft. Also, did I mention there's a pool table? The food menu is comprised of a few well-done bar food options, most of which are served between two buns, but if pizza is more your beer buddy of choice have no fear because fortunati pizzeria is attached and available for ordering. But believe me, the sandwiches and fries are so worthy of an order. The now extinct fish sandwich was my favorite, but have no fear they have hinted at a new fish favorite (maybe a shrimp roll) being added to the menu soon. The hot chicken sandwich is excellent, and so is the burger. Nothing here misses if you come in with your expectations being set at a handheld meal that compliments drinking and not with a stuffy attitude. Caution you may get messy. The burger is savage, dripping with the good stuff and covered in melted orange-yellow cheese. But, my go-to now is Lucky Boy's take on a hot chicken sandwich fried golden brown, crispy, and with just a hint of spice. The coleslaw accompanying it wasn't too wet and was mild in flavor, adding just a nice cut of freshness and creaminess to the fried salty sandwich. Mentioning being fried, the fries themselves are textbook. They're "golden brown and delicious" while being in between thick and thin and also still maintaining the true essence of potato. I can't wait to try the poutine promised to be loaded with cheese curds and smothered with brown gravy. Anything with those fries as a base is a money dish, I would suggest chili cheese fries of some sort for the fall because that would fit in nicely with the menu. It's a small but mighty showing for a small but magnificent bar. Lucky Boys has gotten lucky with the perfect mix of kitsch and nostalgia. It's like a 90s country song or a great burger it never goes out of style.
