One might wonder why I'm giving Buzzard Beach 4 stars. It's not fancy, it's not really clean, and it's kind of like Westport's sore thumb. However, when it comes to dive bars, it ranks right up there. So yes, I'm giving Buzzard Beach 4 stars, because it shouldn't be compared to anything but its kind. This is the kind of place you can go and meet interesting people, drink hella cheap drinks, listen to good music, and chill. If you like darts or pool, check out the downstairs. If you like old school, head banging, awesome punk music, you're in for a treat. Beware of the bathrooms and if there's a wet spot on a chair or table somewhere, don't assume it's a spilled beer. Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard... Where to begin... I love this trashy little establishment. I frequent here for the cheap drinks, shuffleboard, pool and people watching. Mark is a fantastic bartender (downstairs) and the staff in general are nice and quite humorous. I can't tell you how many awkward nights I've had here where someone either ended up either being asked to leave or I've met a new friend. Watch out for crazies in the bathroom who may try and motorboat your boobies or make out with you, but the lovely tattoo covered folk here are bound to be your buddy for the night. Yeah, yeah, it's a bit smelly, but you'll find the cheapest drinks and the most chill time at Buzzard Beach. We visit every time we go to Westport because of the bartenders and awesome drink prices. Their happy hour lasts for about 4 hours every day (I'm pretty sure), and you can get $1.25 drafts (3 options, including PBR) and ~$2.50 wells (it's a bit more for drinks with juice). This is a steal! Their bartenders are really cool and laid back. And the best thing about Buzzard Beach...the famous Bergen Malt. It's a drop shot with Jager and a topper of Irish Cream. A staple for the Westport area! I've been meeting up with friends here for close to 7 years now and it's the only choice for us if we're in the area. The grungy dive bar feel makes it inviting and laid back. Bartenders are helpful and always down to joke around. The wait staff/bar backs are amazing at making sure empty glasses are cleared and drink orders are taken. Your glass will never be empty here. The bathrooms offer great reading material also so that's a bonus. Downstairs there is a Touch Tunes for music, pool tables (not free), arcade games, and a shuffle board. Darts can be found upstairs- can't forget those. All in all, I think if you're into a full dive bar experience with a chill atmosphere this is the place for you. read more

I love dive baaaars! This one is located partway down an alley off of a street in the area. To be honest...I might not have found it had I been out on my own or if I tried to find it again... I was brought here by my friend who lives in the city while I was here visiting. We came in on Thanksgiving night. The blue-green haired bartender was great (once she got the hang of my slightly off-the-beaten-path drink order). The crowd was a good mix of people. Cheap, familiar drinks in Westport. The cheapest. It comes at a different cost, though. This is the very definition of a "dive." The smoking patio is mostly enclosed, guaranteeing that you'll go home smelling like smoke if you step outside to talk, and despite really incredible efforts to clean the place up in the past few years, the inside can sometimes smell like what it is, a very old building that people drink and make bad decisions in. Bartenders are generally friendly. Bouncers do a great job keeping the place in line. Clientele is of mixed age. Hard to see that anyone could ever feel "out of place" here. Just watch yourself near 3am closing on weekends, as the area outside Buzzard Beach turns into something of a scene from Mad Max with all the bars letting out. EDIT: A friend organized a show here this past weekend. I'd seen punk shows in this bar before and they were just annoying and made the place feel even less welcoming, but a couple of really incredible banjo players and a one man band played here Sunday and it was great and fitting for the bar. read more

I've hung out downstairs so this is where I'm focusing. Rainy Thursday night - We found 2 stools at the bar easily and an American Spirit girl offer me 2 packs for $2. There are plenty of games to keep buzzed people entertained. Smoking areas outside are a convenient distance away. The upstairs looked spacious. I'd like to come back and check out that. I didn't know if the bartender would be rude to us since dives can go either way and we're from out of town. He was nothing but nice and even tried to find the channel of the Penguins game for my friend. If you're in that mood, you can't do better than the beach. It's dark. There's wood everywhere. And it creaks. And it smells. It's kind of like a pirate ship! You get cheap drinks and a jagged atmosphere. This place has it in spades. read more

This is where the buzzards come. I have LONG avoided Buzzard Beach, based primarily on accounts from friends. I knew this was not my kind of place. Probably the only thing "going" for it are cheap drinks. But then again, drinks that cheap add to the bad attributes too (belligerent drunks, filth and grime covering every square inch of that place, and the most disgusting bathrooms I have seen in a long time.) We were on a pub crawl and the bar we had planned to go to was too packed for our large group. What does the guy say hanging outside? Hit up Buzzard beach.....the drinks are CHEAP. On our way in, you are immediately assaulted by the smell of b.o. mixed with smoke and well....a**. You also see pool tables, foos ball, and a shuffleboard. It wasn't very croweded downstairs, but had quite a few people. So, we went upstairs and found several empty tables. Quite a few people up here. Still smells like a** and the stairs are narrow. I venture to the men's room. It looks like the entrance to a narrow kitchen. The doors kind of just hang off. I squeeze throught the narrow entrance and I'm faced by more graffiti than you'd see on the NYC subway in the 1980's. So, why 2 stars and not worse you may ask? The waitress took care of us quite well despite a huge crowd. She didn't write down our orders, but was able to bring back 12 different drinks to various tables and remember who ordered what. I was impressed! She came back often to check on us. The drink prices were inexpensive. Also, any place that has games to play is a winner in my book. If I was single, I would NEVER bring a date here. I won't be rushing back, but I may not turn down an offer either (though I may persuade them to go somewhere else). They need to professionally clean the place and get the bad odors out and clean up the bathroom. Keep the staff! They rock. Buzzard Beach is it's own type of entity--that is, places like Buzzard just generally don't exisist outside of the midwest. The drink prices here are RIDICULOUSLY low--.75 PBR anyone?--and the bartenders pour BIG. Once while here I ordered a Long Island Iced Tea and got a glass full of booze. Really. No splash of Sweet and Sour, no splash of Coke---just a glass full of cheap hard liquer. Which is basically what Buzzard is about; cheap booze, lots of it, and a place in which to drink it. Places like this just DO NOT exisist beyond the midwest; it is the midwestern version of "dive bar" and worth at least venturing into once, if for nothing else other than cheap booze and people watching. Unlike other areas of the country, in the midwest dive bars aren't yet trendy enough to be packed from front to back every night, mainly with young scenesters and young, fashion forward drunks. Not that there aren't some ridiculous scene people who come to this bar--because there are enough, not as many as their used to be but enough--but the crowd does remain diverse, and on any given night you'll find people here from all walks of life, and representatives from all different subcultures. It's a melting pot as far as the scene goes and since the smoking ban, as mentioned by others, this bar is far less packed than it has been in the past. There are two levels to this bar: in the bottom one there are pool tables, a shuffleboard, a jukebox and a bar. Upstairs, an open air patio outside and another full bar along with booths to sit in and tables and chairs. The bathrooms are upstairs as well, although one step inside them and most won't find the idea of using them too appetizing. They are a work of art in their own right though--if you take a minute to shuffle through all the grafffitti on the wall you'l find some genuinely funny and some really retarded shit written all over with black sharpie. If you make any sort of regular appearance to this bar, eventually you too will get drunk enough to not only use the bathroom but to mark it with a sharpie as well. It just sort of happens after awhile of coming here. There is also a popcorn maker right by the front door for hungry drunks to help themselves too. However, I suggest that if you can remain the realm of the cognicient for your stay at Buzzard, that you keep your hands off the popcorn. I've watched people throw used condoms and other such questionable items into the serving bin and shutter to think about how long most of that popcorn has been sitting there for. Staff tends to be typical--not too friendly, not too mean, although if you start shit expect to be kicked out. Although in the past Buzzard has been a little rough compared to some other bars around town, in general you shouldn't have any problems (unless you are a douch bag in which case I predict you'll have problems everywhere). Like I mentioned before, the crowds run the gambit, but on a whole, they tend to be on the edgier side--expect lots of tattoos and piercings. Most of the regulars here have a serious drinking problem, so expect to see some really FUCKED UP drunks here, which always makes for a good people watching time (if not also the feeling that one should hand them a 50 and tell them to get some help). All and all, a very decent place. Cheap drinks (probably some of the cheapest left in America at this point), laid back, interesting. The decor can mesmerize you when drunk. A shark? ON THE CEILING? WOAH MAN... :) Definately check it out at least once if you're in the area. It's much better than anything in the Power and Light District, which tends to be so elitest that nobody goes there except creepy old business dudes looking to pick up a little ass. read more

I am slowly becoming more and more in love with this place. This is by far the weirdest bar I have ever been into. The crowd here isn't any less weird either. You can walk around Westport and literally point out every single person that goes to Buzzard Beach. However, you can't point out everyone who does go there. If you catch my drift. It's such a mixed crowd it's fantastic. The entire place is wood. Wood everywhere. And creaking. Lots of creaking wood noises. And smells. An odd smell. Of wood. And alcohol. And all the things that have soaked into the wood over the years. All of this really gives the bar its character. There's a large wrap around covered patio to smoke on as well as a downstairs bar with pool tables, darts, shuffleboard, all the cool stuff. The bartenders here are unique as the bar and they are awesome. Cheap drinks, lots of shots, lots of Hamms, Schlitz, and PBR. This is the perfect place to come if you are planning on getting white girl wasted. Or any kind of wasted really. We came here last week for some sweet World Cup action. *USA! USA! USA!* I had called the night before, trying to find a place open early enough for the US/Slovenia match. [Me: Hi, are you showing the US World Cup came tomorrow? Quaff: Uhh, yeah probably. Me: It starts at 8:30 a.m. Quaff: Oh. No.] The guy who answered said they'd be setting up shop for the first game at 6:00 a.m. SCORE. We walked into Buzzard Beach eeeaaarrly the next morning (by my standards at least) and at first I felt a little out of place. There weren't many people there, and we were most definitely not their typical clientele. Picture me in a KU shirt and white shortyshorts, my roommate in a blue sundress, etc. But you know what? The guy working the bar was AWESOME. He welcomed us immediately, offered us free homemade baked goods (banana muffins, snickerdoodles, etc.) and started serving up the $1.50 beers. The crowd grew and the game was AWESOME. (And I hope that Malian referee gets punched in the face.) Camaraderie was the name of the game at Buzzard Beach that morning, and World Cup Fever was definitely in action. I've been here before on a regular night and...yeah, as some reviews say, it's dirty and dark and sketchy. But the staff is awesome, the patio is spacious and the drinks are dirt cheap. Very nice. I definitely enjoy Buzzard Beach. Pros: This divey bar has a low key and laid back atmosphere. This is definitely a place to come if you're wanting a more intimate atmosphere. I've been there on different nights of the week, including the weekend and I always enjoyed myself and the people. The bar-goers are easy going and very very friendly. I went there with my friend once, but she had to leave and I still had beer left, so I stayed and hung out. The bartenders made me feel welcome (and not like a lonely alcoholic) and people came up to me and chatted with me a lot! Of course, they wouldn't chat with you if you weren't open to people coming up to you. I even stayed for a few more drinks! Something I would never do at another bar! Upstairs they have live bands sometimes, but there's a downstairs you can go to. The downstairs holds a few games: pool table, foosball table, shuffleboard, and a few video games, as well as another bar. The bar may be categorized as a "hipster/hippie" bar (I honestly don't know the difference; people are people, in my opinion), but I'm not the stereotypical "hipster/hippie" and I feel absolutely comfortable in there. ... Have I mentioned the staff? Just awesome, down to earth, friendly people! They are welcoming and not intimidating at all! AND go ahead! Buy them a shot! I know you'll get something good out of it! Cons: The only bathrooms are upstairs by the door and they are super tiny, luckily the bar isn't usually very packed so it's easy to get in and out of the bathroom. The smell..... is something you either get used to, ignore, or put up with. It's just very musty, but there is a deck on the top (main) floor you can hang out on (where the smokers go) and there is a small patio on your way out of the basement. This place is alright. Last time I was here the bartender had trouble keeping my beer full, but had no problem refilling his own cup with Jaeger. That's cool I guess, it was like three in the afternoon and the place was full of middle aged bar flies. I was just a guy drinking by myself, who tips pretty well. I would like to stress my displeasure with the overuse of the term "dive bar". This place is old, hasn't been remodeled for twenty, thirty years, but the presence of doormen, and the fact that Westport Security is only a cry for help away makes this place too safe to be a real "dive bar". I don't care if the matchbooks here call the place a five star dive. The fact that they call themself a dive bar kind of makes them not a dive bar. I want danger. I want to feel uncomfortable going to the bathroom. You should question whether the liquor in the Jack Daniel's bottle is JD, or Old Crow. Is that Bud on tap or Milwaukee's Best? I would classify the Hitching Post, as a dive bar, not Buzzard. This is still a great place. Like any bar I love this place when it's empty. The juke box downstairs is good, and the bartenders running the music upstairs usually gets it right also. Most of the staff are nice enough, and the decor of the place reminds me of an "alternative" Applebee's. There is crap all over the walls, shark heads, alligator heads, old beer posters, get drunk enough this kind of decor can seem charming and cool. And like a last minute prom date, it's cheap and easy. To get drunk here. Happy hour has $.75, 12oz. PBR draws, and they have a good sized deck to sit on while you enjoy your libations. End all be all dive. Definitely my favorite dive bar in KC and I've only been threatened to be stabbed here once. The crowd stays consistently weird. If you go here on a weekend night look out for Rico the resident mascot of Buzzard who will probably be dancing around in hot pants and a weird hat. The beer is super cheap. When I find myself in the Westport area, I make it a point to spend quite a lot of time here. Extremely cheap draughts until 7 or 8 makes it a perfect pit stop before catching a show in the area. The mens bathroom is what you would expect for a dive bar; urine soaked, sarcastic writing scrawled all over, and you just can't bring yourself to touch the toilet handle (or the sink) so you just zip up and walk away. It has benches outside on a wooden deck and the downstairs has billiards and another bar. A word to the wise, stay away from the popcorn machine. The extended patio and humidity would only enhance our drinks. Well, that's when the Buzzard came. I'm not a real big fan of migraters, you know, those people that will be all social with you the SECOND you show any type of manners, like holding the door open for you or saying excuse me. They see it as an opening to talk to you and go on from there. Well, this codger was essentially eyeballfucking all of us (7) and making some harsh statements from the next table. We told him, in so many words, to piss off until we switched tables. Back to the bar, the outside tables and chairs are old wooden messes that are still held together nicely, even with the layers of sharpie. Spacious enough to walk to the inside and not bump into elevnty people. BUT the people watching is what takes the cake. Apparently across the street at the America pub or whatever, every weekend there's an arrest or a gunshot or whatever with Buzzard being the prime bird's nest to creep. And creep you can here! You can be uber judgmental and bag on people stumbling down the alley or watching young love in the parking lot from two stories up and behind a security guard. Shit, the table next to us had a meathead and a floozy dry humping next to us, much to the chagrin of the table next to us (10 bucks for her panties, if she wore any, was offered by the table next to us, which was promptly doubled by me). As a sign of fate, all taps were down aside from Boulevard's Wheat. Back in Chicago, we don't get Boulevard so I was more than excited when I drank my fill of this delicious beverage for only 2.25 a glass. I don't normally do this, but I've never hated a bar as much as I hate this bar. Everything about it is cool until you meet the staff. The bouncer took my ID and told me it was a fake. I'm a twenty-four year old woman, so I told him that I would be needing my ID back and he refused to give it back and then threatened to call the police. I told him to please do so and he snubbed me and told me to leave. Finally after twenty minutes of arguing I told the bouncer that I would call the police if he didn't give me back my ID. I finally got it back and left. A week later I decided, "fuck it, I'll try it again" this time I actually got in. Super cool vibes, the set is is awesome, pool tables, beer on draft but the two bartenders that helped me were total assholes. It was a Sunday night and was not busy at all. Dive bar for sure. They aren't trying to impress you, and that's what I kind of like about it. Yes, it's dirty. Yes, there are a lot of little corners and hideaways where its looks like some nasty things could happen. But I think everyone needs a little danger in their lives, especially when it comes to choosing a drinking venue. They have some ridiculous specials, when we went on a Sunday last time, PBR draws were either 25 or 50 cents. Yes. Amazingness (Even though it IS PBR). Thursdays are also trivia/ladies night. The crowd here fits right in with the environment of the space; hipsters, emos, Goths, musicians, poets, artists, and the occasional joe six-pack who understands the importance of keeping Buzzard Beach alive. The 2-level layout (a porch/deck upstairs and a 'basement' downstairs) is something different than the other bars; it provides more variety. Since Kansas City banned smoking, BB is much more enjoyable- from my point of view, it used to be the smokiest bar in Westport. The bartenders are always so nice and friendly, even though they get really busy from time to time. I would say that this isn't really the place to 'party', but rather the place to chill, kick back, and contemplate where (and if) you'll go next. read more
