I was waiting next door at Discount Tire and decided I would walk down to a fast food restaurant to grab breakfast. Lucky for me, I came across Fat Mama'z next door. Walked up to the counter and waited to make my order and review the menu. I was warmly greeted by the cashier and placed my order for an egg and bacon grit bowl. After a brief wait, my order was ready. The grits were piping hot and cheesy. Bacon was crispy and eggs scrambled perfectly. You might think a grits bowl is easy, but it's also easy to mess up. I've never ordered inside this place so everything I have to say pertains to the drive thru. Let's talk about the drive thru itself, it's easy to find if you know where you're going, but for my first timers - you better pull up paying attention and prepared for tight turns and close spaces when it comes to other cars. I think this place could do extremely well with some music that is reminiscent of eating at somebody's Fat Mama's house. It would make the wait in our car more pleasurable and it would pass the time more quickly than scrolling in our ride on IG with the windows rolled up. Let's get to the food: The Curry Shrimp Grit Bowl is one of the things you NEED to try here. The shrimp is wonderfully cooked and the curry is far from short on flavor. Worth the drive and the wait. I went during lunch so it wasn't crowded but definitely busy. The interior is simple but the flavor of the food is feature presentation. The Deep Fried Smoked Sausage is thick and juicy. The Buffalo Chicken Ranch Fries is loaded! It is a fulfilling meal unto itself. Overall, absolutely delicious and fulfilling! They have 2 locations so go and be blessed. I'm definitely going back to try the breakfast options on menu. Go hungry! read more

Listen y'all. This is the spot. I moved to the west side a year ago and we've ordered from Fat Mama'z at least a dozen times. The ladies inside work MAGIC with the flavors. The shrimp & Grits is my favorite on the menu but everything we've ever ordered has always been fresh, hot, seasoned and 100% delicious. My favorite place to eat on the west side of Jax. The spicy jerk shrimp paired nicely with the sweetness of the pineapples. I ordered the platter and it was honestly enough for two. Hidden gem! Husband and I walked here while waiting on our car to be serviced. The menu had your standard layout: appetizers, sides, main dishes and combos. Husband ordered the philly cheesesteak and I ordered chicken and waffles. Without the signage I would have thought "we're going to Aunties house to eat". The food was great and service was order, pay and go. And since we had some time on our hands we dined in. My chicken and waffles was full of flavors: sweet, savory even a little spicy. The chicken was thouroughly cooked and juicy. Waffle still had a little crisp to it even with all of syrup I poured on it. I pretty much inhaled it. The philly was also full flavor and nicely portioned. Two thumbs up from Husband and we both agreed we would be back to try the other entrees and snacks. I visited Fat Mama'z yesterday. Firstly, the service was terrible and the wait time was very long. My husband and I waited for about an hour before we were able to get our food. Secondly, I gave the cashier specific directions on how to make my fish sandwich and they still manged to make it wrong. Its not like i asked for much to be changed. I just wanted mayo and tomatos on my sandwhich. I went back to get my order fixed and instead of a good piece of fish I was given a burnt piece. I find this super unacceptable. I don't know if that's how they normally do service but that was not acceptable. They should really start listening to the customer and what they want. I understand that sometimes people get orders wrong but to get it wrong and then serve burnt food isn't good for business. read more

After ordering my food they called my name for my order. I stood in line while they took the lady's order in front of me. Then the employee took a long phone order. After taking both orders she walks off from the counter (never saying one word or acknowledging me) (mind you whole time my food is sitting out getting cold). She comes back to the counter and the phone starts ringing. She takes the phone call! No greeting to me, no conversation, no questions asked. So I asked her for my food. She gets upset and says I'm rude after I patiently waited for my order which had been called out! We had a full fledge argument about professionalism. And after another worker steps in she keeps trying to go back and forth. Needless to say my order was wrong! The only reason I'm giving two stars is that the food was actually good. But the customer service is a no for me! read more

Ribs and Chicken didn't hit the spot. Baked beans had cinnamon in it - I actually like that. Mac N Cheese was a total miss. The green beans had to be canned and the seasoning used was too salty for my taste. In addition - The meat portion was quite limited. King of BBQ is still on Blanding and 103rd, for now (NOT the green pineapple shack). There's also BBQ joints opposite sides of this place on Lane, and unfortunately I would prefer to go to one of those places over this one.

I heard mixed reviews about this place, I had to come try it out myself. When I say that this is gonna be my new favorite breakfast place around here, OH I MEAN IT!! Their food tastes soooo good it is perfectly seasoned and made with LOVE you can just tell whoever back in that kitchen got that TOUCH for making the best breakfast. They did the right thing too for making this restaurant. The people working are so sweet and helpful! To my surprise, their black coffee is DELICIOUS as well! I love a breakfast place with good coffee, that's how you know I will be returning. The only thing I will say is that I wish that they had enough money to renovate that place to make parking and the drive thru better. I ordered from Fat mama'z for the first time yesterday and had their steak loaded fries and some cheese grits with their punch to drink. I can only describe this as heaven entering your mouth. The whole meal was one of the most incredible things I've ever eaten. I will 1000% be back again and try other meals. One of the best places in jacksonville for cheap and delicious food. We are a late lunch on a Saturday (1:30p), so the place was slow, but there weee people coming and going. Everyone was nice and it didn't take long at all to get our food. If I had to break it down, I'd give ambience 2-3 stars, service 5 stars and food a solid 4 stars. Not the best. But definitely worthy of stopping in again if I'm in the area! read more
