Sushi only thing decent was the Yellowtail

Unfortunately, we had a bad experience here upon our first and last visit to Fat Fish. I'll keep it short and sweet. We went with AYCE with no expectations and were still disappointed. Tuna sushi smelled like a fish tank, seared albacore was not even seared and did not look or smell fresh. The salmon sushi was mushy and mussels were not good. Green Dragon roll and Yellowtail were decent but the rice used was very cold and hard. When we asked to bring bill as we did not want to continue with AYCE we were charged $90 for what we ordered or pay $6 for an additional two rounds. Another great meal at Fat Fish Sushi. This was our second time at this fantastic restaurant. The service was once again excellent and the sushi was delicious! We are very lucky to have such a great sushi restaurant in our neighborhood.

Back in May, a fellow yelp*er messaged me, asking what I thought about Fat Fish Sushi's AYCE. At the the time I had never been to restaurant but since, it has been on my to-try list. Fast forward six months, I jumped on my motorcycle and finally made it out to Fat Fish Sushi on an early Sunday evening. "How much is the AYCE?" - The lady behind the counter, Jenny, replied, "$37." Okay, let's eat! If you are a paying customer, you're paying to be there. In addition, one of their prerequisites for AYCE is a two or more people. However, I was alone at the time and it wasn't an issue. I'm guessing that during peak times, they would rather give up space for a party of two or more customers to maximize profits. IMO, not a very smart business practice. It's a good way to lose a lot of potential clients. Like most other sushi restaurants, artificial crab meat could be found in quite a few of the rolls I ordered. (i.e. - Filler) When ordering AYCE, I try to avoid anything that resembles a dressed up California roll or orders that contain fake crab meat. Excellent experience overall! Small and cool little restaurant in Lake Forest. Reservations only for AYCE (All You Can Eat.) Only inside seating. AYCE $35 per person! It was only two of us and it was our first time here, so we didn't know what to expect or how things worked. We came on a Friday around 5:00 pm. No waiting to be seated. We noticed lots of people ordered for take out, so lots of people seemed to know about this place! Staff was very friendly and helpful. She explained exactly how everything worked, and if we wanted to do AYCE or order individual. We said AYCE not really knowing what to expect. Since it wasn't too busy, they took us in and set us up on our table. Service was quick, and the food was actually really good. We do not have one complaint about the food! All sushi rolls we ordered were delicious. Once we were done, our waitress comes, checks our orders and said: "I will change your stay from AYCE to individual and set you up on two combos, since you guys didn't really eat enough, and it will be a bit cheaper." (That was really nice of her) It was an excellent experience here. Will definitely come back again.

Had the AYCE option last week and it was not good. Lots of rice on the rolls. Not only that but I had a couple rolls fall apart so I just ate the fish part. Server would not allow anyone in our party to order more u til I ate all the scrap rice. The salmon nigiri was super bland to me. If you Like a ton of rice on your sushi rolls, this is the place for it. I will never come here again.

Been coming here for years and they make the best churchy roll and sushi!!! The owners and staffs are very nice and knowledgeable in what you would like if you liked something, they point in the right direction of other stuff to try. I started coming here in 2018 and didn't like sushi much, but now I LOVE SUSHI and their sushi is the best!! read more

Fat Sushi is a newer addition to the Lake Forest Gift Card promo - so we decided to check it out. Its located in a shopping plaza off of Lake Forest Drive. Plenty of parking. Nothing fancy here to see, just a local mom & pop type sushi joint, which we are fans of! We were seated right away in one of the few areas inside. Everything was clean and bright. a little warm inside as it was a hot day and they had the door open, with a breeze. I saw one sushi chef that greeted us and he was making the rolls and dishes at the front. I ordered a hot sake and it was super hot and really good. We also got a few rolls, which were all delicious, a salmon skin hand roll - the salmon was on the chewy side and a little cold, and the agadashi tofu, which had a lovely dipping marinade. The fish on the rolls were nice fat pieces, and so fresh and yummy. Next time will have to try some nigiri. read more

My wife, kids, and I visited Fat Fish. The boys LOVE sushi and thought it would be a good treat for them tonight. I told the owner that we would have three AYCE and my wife would be ordering beef off of the menu because she is allergic to fish. The owner instantly got mad and angrily told us that we ALL get AYCE, or none of us will. I explained that my wife can't eat fish. She got more angry and said that this is her policy. Rather than endure more of her fury, we left. I want to support little businesses and we went out of our way to go to this restaurant. Needless to say we will not be back. Her policy is fine. It is her restaurant and I respect her right to set her rules. The attitude was uncalledfor. read more

I have been coming to fat fish for many years after being suggested by a co worker that lives in the area. It's great value and quality in my experiences. I have brought family and friends here on many occasions and have always been treated amazingly by the polite staff. It's not easy finding a good ayce restaurant especially one that serves escolar in my experience, this one is my go to. read more

My family and I absolutely love this place and it has become our go-to for sushi night! The fish is always incredibly fresh and the specialty rolls are creative and delicious, but what truly makes this spot special is the warm, friendly service. The fish was very fresh, the rice had a wonderful flavor, and service was great. It was our first time and felt the All You Can Eat was worth the money. The food was very tasty. Loved the ambiance with the umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. My only complaint is we had one person who wanted to join us for this huge celebration. Really wanted to like this place to support a small shop. But I can't deny how terrible it was. The mussels were grainy from sand, the tempura were all undercooked, the rice had no flavor and was mushy, and I had food poisoning during the nighter after dining here. The service was nothing special but also nothing to complain about. They just did their job delivering the dishes and giving the check. Considering the reviews I had high hopes. I'm curious if it was just an off day but don't want to risk it again read more

We were so excited to try their AYCE. We have a 1yr old toddler. Every AYCE we went to would not charge any kid under 3 because they don't eat much. Since we're already paying $100 for 2 adults, I didn't expect they would ask us to purchase separate food from the menu for our toddler. However, they did... This is really bad business strategy... So without ordering, we stood up and left... sorry we won't ever come back. read more

Me and my Friend were looking for a authentic sushi place and ended up at Sashami across the Street... ( this is not an advertisement) We got to Sashimi and 22.50$ for a California Roll?!?? We left instantly! Their pricing was very overpriced for the establishment conditions. Fat Fish Recap: The place is so cute with lots of traditional decor and ambiance. 40$ per person for all you can eat! The Server, Emily was very polite and attentive. She recommended the tastiest dishes and even let us customize our rolls. My Friend and I were very impressed with the results of the food that he got up to personally thank the chef!!!! definitely recommend, food and service. A 10/10 I would recommend the owners to have more calm/low ambient lighting and this place would be top tier! Recommend Recommend! Come here to fat fish and you'll leave a Fat Fish haha! read more

The food was good I definitely recommend the California roll for anyone who is not sure what to get. The food was really filling and the service is good too. The service was really nice and they made sure to make us feel comfortable. The place is a little small it is an all you can eat buffet the price is 20$ for kids 10 and under and 40$ for adults.of course they have an option for buffet and just to eat.It is beautiful here and I will be comping back for sure. Great little place for the locals, I wish I lived a little closer. Came by and tried it out and man what a surprise as I thought it was a AYCE but the quality is that of a top notch sushi restaurant. Definitely worth a visit and be ready to be surprised. I'll be back with some of my co-workers to get updated pictures of some of the dishes. read more

Service is excellent. The cajun salmon is lovely, and the waitress today was accommodating and knowledgeable. The miso soup was the best we had in ayce places in orange county because 1. It was piping hot and 2. It was the perfect balance, not too watery, not too salty. We also really loved the Love Love, hence the name probably. The complimentary green tea ice cream was the cherry on top of a wonderful meal. I forgot to catch the name of the waitress, but thank you so much for your kind and attentive treatment of us! Would give 6/5 stars if I could. read more

I think back to when my mom and I had dinner here and we decided to do AYCE & the owner wife decided to charge us $112. She had a very rude and strict demeanor as well and was not friendly at all. The food was terrible quality. We had food poisoning afterward. The interior is comfy. They have been here a long time and have decorated the interior nicely. read more

Pleasantly surprised at the poke bowl, it came with avocado, salmon, tuna, mango, and the standard "krab" and seaweed tuna fixings. It was tasty and the portion size was just right to feel full. This seems like a nice local family owned restaurant. Do note that the lunch special menu is valid only on weekdays. read more

First-time try fat fish sushi restaurant. I was amazed by the atmosphere. The restaurant is small but nice and cozy with a Japanese feeling to it. They have an all-you-can-eat menu and a regular menu. I had an all-you-can-eat and the fish was very fresh especially the salmon melting through my mouth. The Lady server was very kind and supported start to finish my all-you-can-eat. Also, the music was nice and I was so happy that I found a good sushi restaurant in the neighborhood which is Fat Fish Sushi. read more

Staying in Lake Forest while we visit family we stopped here for dinner. Mom and Pop run family restaurant worth the visit if you're in the neighborhood. Started with the Miso Soup which was hot and tasty. Had the Mixed Tempura appetizer which was crispy and on point. My wife went for the Spicy Chicken Teriyaki and it was delicious. I went for the Sashimi Sushi dinner and Baked Monster Roll. Delicious all around. read more

This was some of the worst sushi I've ever had. Almost all the fish was seared to hide the fact it wasn't fresh. They serve you the rolls first loaded with rice, artificial crab so you'll fill up and not be able to eat the nigiri you order. Then they charge you for what you don't eat or finish on top of the all you can eat price. And the waitress kept telling us people are starving. I haven't heard this line since my mom wanted me to eat my Brussel Sprouts. Check out the seared toenail they served disguised as albacore or yellowtail- I'm not sure what it was read more

We absolutely loved this place! Can't believe we have such good AYCE here in Lake Forest; the sushi was great and the service was incredible. This is a family-run restaurant and the quality and service really shows; they took great care of us despite us not knowing the rules (you need a reservation) or their hours -- we came in an hour early and they fed us anyways, which really tells you how kind they are and how much they care about the restaurant. If you look at the menu from years past, you'll see that the price has only changed by $1 in the past 5 or 6 years. I saw the old Maki Yaki had changed and it was now Fat Fish - all you can eat. I decided to take a chance. You have the option of doing all you can eat or order off the menu. When I decided to pay the $24.95 and go all you can eat, the sushi chef decided to take control and tell me he is whipping me up something special - the fat fish roll (house special). I thought alright, I'm going to like this guy! He served it up and it was pretty darn good! Very fresh tasting and full of balancing flavors. I tend to judge my sushi spots based on whether they can make a salmon skin hand roll without burning it. You'd be surprised how many places just can't get it right. When served it was PERFECTLY made, no burnt pieces and the omega 3 oils bursting out of the skin! Left me wanting more. Next up, the Boston roll. Again fresh tasting and the fried asparagus was a nice touch! Will order that one again. Over all this place was a welcome surprise. So i brought my friends here after college and tried the AYCE for the first time and wasn't disappointed however due to understaffed of the work place its it's only flaw and i can understand the lack of attention when its busy cuz i use to work at a restaurant but however its been only open for a bit so they are looking for another server i bet but HONESTLY the food is good and its old owner was great and the daughter aka the waitress is trying to live up to maki yaki 3 name and i do plan to come back its a good place to just chill drink beer and just chat with friends or family Best of wishes Fat Fish and one interesting thing was my buddy ordered $30 worth of sushi but they told they were going to charge him as if he ate AYCE so he would save $5 read more

So happy to have a sushi place to call home! We hop around sushi restaurants in the area, and never had any problems anywhere, but we wanted a place of our own. We found it:) The service was friendly and attentive and the sushi chef was so kind. We ordered AYCE and the chef even made us a few special bites...We felt very special! I came here with a friend and tried a few of their dishes and I'd say their food is not half bad. I loved their idea of an "all you can eat" sushi but one thing I kept in mind is that they are low on staff so I didn't get my food very quickly. Overall I had a satisfying experience with Fat Fish. read more

$20 all you can eat - cant beat that. Rolls are great. I am a fan of Seared Ahi, and I requested this and they brought me seared tuna. Theres a difference. Im not complaining, casue the rest of their rolls are amazing. read more
