Interestingly, the sushi counter seems to be a different world altogether. I am generally not a great fan of counter seating, but here it may actually be the best place to sit. I have yet to have an unpleasant interaction with anyone working behind the counter. They have consistently been friendly, professional, and welcoming. Then there is the dining room. The first three or four tables near the entrance are perfectly pleasant. The farther back you go toward the restrooms, however, the less inviting it becomes. That part of the restaurant feels dark, dingy, and neglected--almost like an afterthought. I have a difficult time imagining the owner sitting at one of those tables, looking around, and thinking, "Yes, this feels nice." I like this restaurant, and I keep returning because the sushi is usually very good and it is conveniently close to home. But the experience depends far too much on where you are seated and who happens to be serving you that day. With more consistent service and some attention paid to the back portion of the dining room, this could easily be a five-star restaurant for me. Until then, my recommendation is simple: Come for the sushi--and, if you have a choice, sit at the counter.
