Stopped here today for a early dinner. Wanted the brisket but it was sold out so I got the pork ribs and pickled veggies. Majorly disappointed. The ribs were tough as heck. They clearly needed another couple hours in the smoker. Maybe it's personal preference but I like my ribs damn near fall off the bone tender. I had to gnaw on them extensively and even then all told I probably left 1/8 lb on the bone I couldn't get off. The rub they use is very tasty but the toughness over shadowed everything. Pickled veggies were very tasty and refreshing change in side options. However they were 60-70% and I'm not a big fan of celery so this was disappointing. The cauliflower, carrots, red pepper, and onions that I did have were delicious. My meal with a drink cost me $26 dollars. Pricey for sure but good bbq is usually worth it. Given the toughness of the ribs this was definitely not worth what I paid. I had very high hopes given the reputation of Prized Pig. Once a jewel in the crown of the South Bend culinary scene, Fat Cap had the best bbq for miles. On a recent visit, though, I felt like I had stepped into the Upside Down. Brisket had obviously been frozen, the ribs were dry to the bone, and the chicken wasn't much better. Even the coleslaw was bitter! When they first opened, the line went out the door, and for good reason, but on my last visit there wasn't a single soul in sight. I used to tell everyone to go here, but my heart is now broken. Evidently the owner has lost all his key people to start their own places in town, some are pretty good, and I have tried three times to get fresh bbq and three times have received dried out, overcooked, yesterday's leftovers. Went for lunch the other day and it was fantastic! There were a lot of options including tips, pork belly, chicken and I had the spare ribs. They can do sandwiches and everything is available by the 1/2 lb. (they weigh it out in front of you and usually heap way more than a 1/2 lb.) They give it to you without sauce so you can choose one of their 4-5 different sauces (North Carolina, South Carolina, spicy, etc) and they have pretty decent sides. I got the max&cheese which was good. The only thing I wish they had on the menu that they don't: French fries. This place was very clean, the staff was friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Good meat, Mediocre sauces Honestly, I could go there, get the pulled pork, and not need to get any BBQ sauce. That being said, I am a "dipper" and love to use sauces. The BBQ sauces aren't quite my cup of tea- I like thicker, sweet sauces. I found that if I mix the Kansas City with South Carolina, I get a decent sauce together. The side dishes are pretty good- I love the baked beans. The mac&cheese was a little bland, but not terrible. Overall, if you need some smoked meat, give the place a shot. I should have requested lean cut as that is my preference, but the cut I was given was 50% straight fat. The editable part of the brisket had almost no smoke flavor, hard pass for $14. The rib tips on the other hand were bursting with flavor and worth getting off the highway for. Tried the elote corn and Mac and cheese and both were quality but not really unique. Also, something to note: The typical barbeque place is super messy, but here, it's actually very clean. I got the pork belly, brisket, chicken, rib tips, and a side of mac & cheese. The pork belly was extremely tender, and also had a lot of smokey flavor. The brisket was okay. It also had good smokey flavor but wasn't as moist as I would like it. The chicken was decent as well. The skin had a good crunch and was seasoned well. The rib tips were my second favorite. They were tender, and bite size. The mac and cheese wasn't too soggy, and very creamy. Fantastic find for BBQ! Do you and your friends argue about which state had the best BBQ? Quit arguing and just come here, as they have the big four states all represented. They piled on the rib tips for me, which we seasoned well enough on their own to skip the sauce entirely. My main course was the brisket sandwich, which is a great combo of sweet and heat. Don't sub anything out - let the flavors combine! Lastly, the sweet cornbread was divine! I had half as a side and the other half as dessert. My only disappointment was missing out on the last andouille sausage...but a fireman bought it, so I'm okay with it. Will remember this place the next time I come through town! read more

Heard about Fat Cap from a friend and we went there for lunch today and... its all about the meat! BBQ Ribs, Rib Tips, Brisket, Pork Shoulder, Pork Belly, Chicken, and Sausage. Some sides as well. The proprietor gave us a small piece of the Pork Belly as a sampler - very nice. The Kansas City, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama BBQ sauces available - all very distinctly different. The decor is spot on for BBQ as well - Corrugated Sheet Metal and Picnic Tables, metal trays and paper towels for the meat. Pricey for lunch - but I had a 1/2 lb of brisket, which is Market Priced. My friend had chicken, and rib tips - which were also good. The rib tips had a slightly sweet and very flavorful rub. With beef so expensive these days and the pork and chicken as good as they were - they could be better options if price is an issue. With Texas as my place of origin, I am always on the lookout for good BBS. Despite the fact that there was no Texas BBQ sauce, pickles, or onions for the sandwich - still my vote for currently best BBQ in town! I think Fat Cap will find a growing customer base as word gets out. read more
