"We should not teach children the sciences but give them a taste for them."~Jean Jacques Rosseau - I love Rosseau's insight here! To promote lifelong learning, it is so much more important to create a taste or appetite for learning than to just teach facts. When we create a taste for learning, they are apt to become lifelong learners and people who contribute - in a world where most are just consumers and users, contributing nothing. And that is why I shop at places like Fat Brain Toys, to invest in my grandchildren and create an taste/appetite for learning in them, and not just give the "stuff" thoughtlessly. - Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a Genevan philosopher, writer and composer. His political philosophy influenced the progress of the Enlightenment throughout Europe, as well as aspects of the French Revolution and the development of modern political, economic and educational thought. The best mom I know buys most of her toys from here and after eyeing a specific toy at her house I finally went in with my son on a Saturday evening. The store is so bright and clean (again Saturday evening could have something to do with that) only one other person was there so I felt really comfortable letting my son play with all the displays. I was kindly assisted to the toy I was looking for quick and decided to keep letting my little guy play. I didn't feel any pressure or anything to purchase and leave. We ended up getting a couple more toys for him. The staff is super friendly and they offer events a couple times a week which is awesome. I definitely like mission about helping brains grow through play. We'll definitely be back.

My kids always enjoy stopping here. This place is full of fun toys, many of which are designed to engage the Brain in some way. You will not find many things here at say target or Walmart. Today we attended their Unicorn Party. They had 2 "Real" unicorns for your kids to take pictures with. There were several tables setup with Toys to try out and Hyvee was there with cookies to decorate. They were also running 10% off everything so we did walk out with a few toys for the kiddos. If you are looking for toys that have an educational twist to them (your kids will probably not realize that they are learning) this is a great place to go!

Cool little toy store. Nice variety of nicer toys, brain games, puzzles & cooler than average toys. They willingly wrap gifts for you. Employees were great. The store was clean & bright Offering a fun environment for kids to try out toys.

I'm one of those aunts that loves to buy gifts that are either educational, secretly have something to do with science or math, include cute/realistic animals, remind me of my childhood toys, or are hand crafted out of wood by small US-based companies... or some combination of all the above. So by the time Bill recently called up his sister to ask what one of the nieces wanted and got the answer of 'mermaid Barbie' we were already at Fat Brain, as we have been several times before - after I ordered from them online only to realize later they're in Omaha. Needless to say... said niece was not amused with the 'world of water' science experiment kit I got for her. But hey, they aren't all winners right? I personally had a great time with the kit - as did the other kids at the party. In my mind, that's a successful gift, right? I will continue to buy all gifts here until the kids are too old for the store... free gift wrapping and helpful salespeople are just bonuses. As is the amount of fun I have shopping here.

The coolest Toy Company with customer service to match!

Christmas morning and the little guy is tearing through packages before we can see what goes where. The dog strolls past with two big squishy cubes in his mouth that we assume are the hosting house's cat toys. Sure enough we discover the giant dice belong to our new Sturdy Birdy Game from Fat Brain Toys. With the dice chewed up, we could only stand on one foot with our arms out. We contacted the Fat Brain Customer Desk for spare parts and received a replacement set a couple of days later! One of the coolest toy companies around. Their little guy learning games are much appreciated. It's a great source for unusual toys, activities, family tools including lines such as Think Fun, Klutz, and Melissa & Doug. They do the digging for you! Thank you, Teri for sending out new dice and understanding our plight. We've increased our sense of balance at least ; )

At points in my life I have collected comic books, other comic book related items, movie related merchandise, and diecast. This place has all that and more...! Shop smart and take your cell phone to stare and compare. I found a few items reasonably priced, but I found quite a few more that were well above what they could be purchased for online including shipping. One thing about collectibles though... Sometimes it's worth a few dollars more to have it in your hands. I've been surprised a few times when I received items that weren't as described or packaging was damaged in transit. Antiques and collectibles are a different market as a buyer... If you see something you want it's better to buy it right then if it's priced within reason. You may never find that same item again... Old Market is what Old Market is... It's geared to tourists and things are often a little high priced in areas like this. So is their rent usually... These areas attract a high volume of people and if you don't want to pay the marked price...someone who comes in right behind you just might. Some of the items here are a little dusty, but I guess that's to be expected with that many surfaces. Pretty hard to stay on top of all of it... The Imaginarium Old Market Mercantile is defintely worth the stop if you are into collectibles and/or nostalgia!

The gal working was super helpful and very sweet. The space itself is a cute renovated older building that still maintains some of the original charm. They have a lot of infant and smaller toddler clothes but not a huge selection for bigger kids. They are an authorized Jellycat retailer, which is great for those on the hunt! Their items are priced on the higher end for gifting but they carry some really great brands that are made to last (think heirloom quality).
