There's a few places around claiming to be the 'real Albert Square' (from TV show Eastenders). This one probably has the best claim, since, before they decided to build their own square in a studio lot, the plan was to film the show here. Fans of the show will recognise the overall look. There's a small gardens with high railings in the middle, and two storey Victorian houses around that.
However there are differences: one is the presence of a block of flats on one side of the square. This is interesting as those who saw the first episodes of the show might remember that some characters lived in a council block, though on the show this was round the corner from the square. The garden in the middle is also smaller and not generally open to the public: access is by key for residents only (you can see in though). There's also no pub, and the nearest market (Ridley Road) is a fair distance away. Also unlike the fictional square, which seems to have through traffic, Fassett Square is very much on back streets with a railway line blocking off one side. read more
