Well that's finally arrived in the form of a lovely Italian (as in the people running it are Italian) cafe/restaurant called Cafe De Bróc. They make their own pizza (regular AND gluten-free, which my girlfriend can confirm actually is gluten-free) as well as several pasta dishes that I'll be back to check out. They also do lunchtime regulars like a club sandwich. I had the lamb burger topped with blue cheese myself which was lovely and came with a side salad or chips. Aoife was very impressed with her pepperoni pizza, although was regretting her lack of adventure when we saw another pizza come out topped with Parma ham. It looked amazing. The pizza, burger, a sparkling water and takeaway coffee (good and strong, the way you'd expect Italian coffee to taste) came to €32 which i was happy to pay given the quality of the food. The staff were very friendly, particularly the manager/owner who showed the kind of concern and friendliness that you only get from someone who has a personal stake in a business. The space itself is very bright due to glass doors along half the front of the restaurant which was nice to have on a sort-of sunny day. In closing this is a lovey little (seats about 30?) place that i'll be coming back to again and again.

So when we found the Boathouse Cafe at lunchtime, just as we were getting peckish... it made us two happy bunnies indeed. We both went for the soup of the day and shared a sausage roll. The sausage roll was your standard fare. But the soup was excellent, tomato and basil. And the slice of brown bread that came with it was also excellent. None of this sweet brown bread that a lot of places seem to be serving up with soup these days. We got a table outside where there was plenty of other cyclist parked up for lunch too. They know their market here, as there are a few bike racks provided. With our bellies full and are hearts warmed, we cycled away happy.

I have a new favourite spot, right on my doorstep! This place has great coffee at cheap prices, with a lovely atmosphere but a modern decor. A place for hipsters and aul ones alike! With a charming front and back terrace, they make great use of the small space they have. The guys running it are really knowledgeable about coffee and seem to care about quality of product and service (all the hot food/cakes are made fresh on the premises). And again, the prices are unbelievably fair. It's so nice (and rare) to not feel ripped off when I treat myself to go out for lunch. I think this cafe will be a real gem for the community and I will definitely be a regular customer.

I had a traditional Irish breakfast which was excellent - very flavorful. I loved the black and white pudding! My mother and sister both had the pancakes with eggs. I think not only did we enjoy their food, but we also enjoy their incredibly friendly service. It is located in front of Kilmainham Gaol, so it is a good place to stop after visiting the infamous jail. Anyways, the scrambled eggs, bacon & toast and the honey ham sandwich were my favorite items. Every morning I got an espresso shot. Their coffee is Fairtrade and Rain Forest Alliance Certified.  5 stars. Highly recommended. Try one of their cookies.

I got there right at 8am (at opening), and they only took about 5-7 minutes to get my order ready. And pretty much right at opening, a line starts forming. While businesses have been stationed here, just minutes from Kilmainham's main attractions (the Gaol, the modern art museum and the Topaz petrol station), for many years at last this row of shops can offer local and touring foot traffic a place to stop and smell the lattes. Linked via an open doorway to neighbouring Eurospar, this clean, warm coffee house offers plenty of seating and a modest menu of soups, pre-packed sambos, pastries, smoothies... and of course, coffee (and tea, and hot chocolates). Outdoor seating is usually reserved for the indigenous teen population, though local garda will move them on once or twice in an afternoon. Inside it's families and small groups of friends chatting, flipping through left behind copies of The Mail, Sun or Star. The staff are laid back but competent, clearing dishes and wiping down table fairly regularly. Other than the occasional plate collection, customers are generally left to themselves by the baristas - lending to a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Prices are reliably consistent with Insomnia's other outlets, so expect to shell out €2.50 for a regular Americano, €3 and upwards for pastry and around €5 + for sandwiches or soup.
