I buy most of my vegetables from Farm Boy. They're always fresh, well cleaned, and they offer a wide variety. Best of all, for me, the items that I need are sold loose so I can buy the exact quantity that I want. Two of my favourites are rainbow carrots and green beans, always fresh. I am new to Farm Boy. My first introduction was in Waterloo earlier this month. It felt like home when I first walked in. Farm Boy is like Trader Joe's in the States. You can get decent food for various dietary needs. In my case, I am borderline lactose-intolerant. As a result, lactose-free and vegan options are available and are pretty extensive. I am the one who ends up walking around with a huge smile on my face because it has everything that I need. Farm Boy also reminds me of Whole Foods. The difference is that prices are cheaper at the former. The closest Farm Boy for me is in Pickering. It's at Pickering Town Centre. I thought that it would be a zoo having a supermarket at a fairly busy mall. I visited on a Saturday and found a pretty premium parking spot (say that five times fast!) in front of the store. The store does not have a doorway that leads you into the mall. For me, that's fine. I didn't need to shop at the mall and only came here for groceries. I stocked up on my Vegan Bob's snacks. This place did not have vegan cheese puffs, which was a bit of a disappointment. Perhaps I need to visit the one in Waterloo again. I find that the one in Waterloo had more variety and better prices. I got a six-pack of Portuguese egg tarts for $7.49. I didn't see a similar pack-up here. Instead, I would have needed to pay $1.49 for one. I'd be looking at $9 worth of egg tarts. Despite these details, I love this store. I love all the hot foods and salad bar. I ended up picking up a pack of Grandmother's Bake Shoppe chocolate butter tarts. I have heard so much about them, but never knew where to buy them until now. I got some celery, which was fresh and crisp. I also for some mushroom kale soup. It's vegan. The coconut base was fragrant. You can't tell that there's kale in it! I actually added more sliced mushrooms to the soup, because I love mushrooms. I had no problem finding a basket. There are plenty around the store. I went to pay for my goodies. My cashier was nice. She took my reusable penguin bag and helped place my goodies in it. I tend to expect to do all that, so it was a nice touch. The woman shopper behind me said that I was smart for having a shopping bag clipped on my purse. We both store our bags in our car trunk. It's so easy to forget to bring them in. I hope that Markham will have a Farm Boy someday. In the meantime, I am good heading over to Pickering. (47) read more

Their hot food bar section offers a variety of fresh and healthy options, including a dozen vegan ones that I was totally impressed by like their faux General Chao chicken, faux beef, Brussels sprouts, veggies samosas, coconut rice pudding and lots more! Their food look too enticing for me not to buy a large platter to-go! Every item is by weight, but oh my, was it ever pricey! Service was very good though, but I ended up paying almost $20 after tax, since it is prepped food... Yikes. Both the value and taste were there for this first impression, but it is probably not something I would repeat. Food bar that costs by weight is hardly ever a good deal for me. While, the quality is much higher than that of a typical buffet, which this reminded me of, it was neither filling nor satisfying enough for me. read more

Conveniently (for me) located in Pickering, I have been here several times over the past several months. A clean, efficiently laid-out store, Farm Boy specializes in local products (Ontario, Quebec) and also offers options for people with specific dietary needs or preferences (vegan; vegetarian; gluten-free; locivore enthusiasts) Their hot food table selection looks impressive, although other yelpers have given it mixed reviews. Personally, I've not yet tried it. At Farm Boy, I am generally drawn to the cheese selection. They have such a wide range of Ontario and Quebec cheese that you cannot find in most supermarkets. If you are fortunate (and I deliberately seek out this fortune) you might find some cheese marked down to a lower price. I always scoop those up, and they have, every time, tasted just as they should! Another section that I browse is Breads and Desserts. Here, I have found some excellent fresh bread, as well as Tarte au Sucre. The wine section, similarly, offers a selection that varies from the other supermarket offerings, and I have seen some wines here that I've not even seen at the LCBO. That said, I would not shop here for basic staples, unless they were significantly on sale. Farm Boy reminds me of (and other yelpers have mentioned this) Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Unique, high quality products, but you will pay more if you shop here for readily-available staples. For example, their selection of flours is intriguing and varied. However, you will pay more here for a basic, all-purpose flour than you would elsewhere. Going into Farm Boy is a nice experience - attractively appointed displays, pleasant, knowledgable staff, and some interesting food browsing opportunities will await you. For me, Farm Boy is a "surgical strike" supermarket destination, where I will go to buy specific products that I have difficulty finding elsewhere, and I may be tempted to explore some of the other products, if I feel like indulging in a treat or a novelty. read more

When I moved to Toronto I wanted a grocery store similar to Whole Foods. I can honestly say I like this place more than Whole Foods in Toronto. The have many options and the things they have are worth having. I like buying food from here and have their salads and made food options as well as their selection of cheese which is quite good. read more

Best grocery store in this neighborhood. Everything is fresh, organic and healthy. They have a deli bar and a kitchen for you to order to eat. I always get my groceries here now. I just finished playing 18 holes of golf and was famished. I also needed some groceries for dinner. The hot table food is TERRIBLE! The absolute worse food I have tasted in a long time. I thought the Butter Chicken was Butter Tofu. The chicken was bland and had no texture to it. It just disintegrated in my mouth. Horrible. The General Tao Chicken was the exact opposite. It was extremely dry and tough. It was difficult to chew and swallow. Almost $9.00 for this with rice. Never again. Don't try this. You will be disappointed. read more

I travel to Pickering every week and have been to just about every restaurant in the area for lunch. Having said that, I visit Farm Boy grocery store at least once a week, love their lunch options. They have a salad bar with a good selection of always fresh selections. They also have a great hot food bar, with several vegan and vegetarian selections. Additionally, they always have one or two vegan soup selections. Today I had the vegan tomato basil soup, loved it. Added some black pepper and a nice bread roll, perfect lunch. Been going here for the past 6 months, so yes I'll be back again next week, at least once or twice. read more

Who needs whole foods when you got farm boy. Prices are way more reasonable. Where else can you get organic coffee from honduras for $0.99 plus tax or a soup and wrap for $6.99? Produce looks fresh, place is clean and the staff is really nice. I'll be coming here more often. read more

Got a meat pizza and some potato salad. The potato salad ended up being $6.40 including tax. For such a small container of potato salad, it really wasn't worth it. They let us return that, we hadn't touched it, so it's no big deal. The one star is for the $9 pizza we got. One side and underneath it was burnt black, completely inedible. We went to complain and they said it wasn't burnt at all. A whole slice of a four slice pizza was inedible. Pretty disappointed. Wouldn't come back. Even Pizza Pizza isnt that bad. read more

i love this grocery store. Their products are super fresh, and they try to source as much local produce as possible, from their fruits and vegetables from local farms in Ontario and Quebec, to their meats as well - esp the organic ones are all from local farms. I like their concept of having everything "Farm Boy" brand for most items, but they still carry some popular brands as well. They love supporting local brands so I"m very glad to see some of those products carrying in their stores. Meat is super great quality and fresh and when it's on sale it's a steal. They often have some near expiring products anywhere from 20-50% off but honestly they are still in very good quality even when they are on quick sale. After 6-7pm their sandwiches and wraps are usually 50% off so they are only about $3 each! Deli counter is also great because they let you sample them, and I love that they have their own oven roast for those who don't want to eat the processed cold cuts - they are cooked as a roast in house and then sliced/shaved. I come here pretty much for all my regular grocery shopping now and I hope to see more of these stores pop up towards the west! read more

Okay let's set the record straight and say that Farm Boy is not really comparable to a Trader Joe's in terms of selection and price point. So yes, all you nitpickers are correct. The store itself, stuck on the most western point of the Pickering Town Centre, isn't huge. I guess traffic could be an issue coming in and out, but the couple times I have been there it hasn't been too hard and we've always found a spot. They offer a number of their own brand foods that seem to be decent quality and fairly reasonable price. If you're coming here to do a major shop and you're used to price matching, sale shopping, and a plethora of selection Farm Boy may not be the best option. But if you want to come pick up some specialty stuff or premade meals, I say it is worth checking out. read more

Pickering's own Whole Foods! The prices are about the same as those at a Whole Foods but the selection is the same. Since it's a bit pricey and there's no loyalty program, I usually come here to get some of the finer things when I'm entertaining. In terms of produce, there's a large selection of organics, a lot of variety, some that are already nicely prepared and there are usually samples around. Throughout the store are a lot of high quality independent brands from everything ranging from hot sauce to snacks. There's a pretty extensive selection of prepared food (the large salad bar comes to mind) and made-to-order food as well (pizzas made in front of you!). There's a seating area for you to enjoy your hot food at the market. You can purchase alcohol here, just make sure you go to the check outs that are specifically labelled for alcohol. The service is pretty exceptional for a grocery store. I was looking around in the meat section and the manager of the section actually came by to see if I needed help, pointed out the sale items, and made some recommendations in a non-pushy way. read more

Nice little-ish grocery store. It's pretty straightforward, if you need something like jam or peanut butter, they will carry maybe 3 brands of it. Not 10+ brands and leave you staring at the wall of condiments trying to decide which peanut butter is the best. They have quite a few ready to cook dishes that are good, like the tandoori chicken. I like to come here whenever we have guests over as they have a decent selection of cheese to choose from for a charcuterie board. Oh and they sell alcohol too :D read more

Fast Food Selection was surprisingly expanded than Ottawa location we were used to. However, the fresh produce was VERY disappointing. Red Potatoes (10 lb Bag) @ $4.99 majority potatoes had Black Rot. Beans on special on opening week were tasteless. I can keep going. "Farm Boy" your Fresh Produce section is not up to par. read more

Produce is good. Hot foods and salads, many items not priced and look like they've been sitting there too long. Bakery - I bought a package of their KEY LIME tarts for $4.99 and the pastry was WET and limp - tasted like wet sawdust! HORRIBLE! A tart should have a crisp crust not a soggy crust!
