Since opening in Pickering, Blue Sky supermarket has been my go-to store for most groceries, Asian and otherwise. They offer a wide selection of Asian and Caribbean groceries; a butcher shop, including Halal; live seafood; a bakery; and a wide selection of cooked food. In addition to a lot of popular Chinese dishes, they offer jerk chicken, Portuguese chicken, chicken shawarma, fresh in-house sushi, and a salad bar. I often stop here on my way home from work when I don't feel like cooking. For the price of their food specials, I sometimes ask myself if I should even bother cooking. The prices are good. Very good when there's a sale going on. Most dishes average around $7 and are large enough to feed two people with healthy appetites. Two dishes could easily feed an average family of three. There's a high turnover rate during the busy lunch and dinner periods so the food is usually fresh. While there have been a few misses, the food taste and quality is usually good, maybe not as good as a made-to-order restaurant dish, but very good. If your timing is lucky, choose something that you see just coming out of the kitchen. Their current lunch special (before 3pm) offers a choice of rice or noodles, and two items from their steam table. Today, I had the beef fried rice with stewed chicken and ribs. It cost only $4.99! Spacious clean supermarket. Has a decent amount of asian goods with produce often cheaper than its competitors in the area. Pacific near by has slight advantage in size and hot food offerings, but blue sky is not that far behind. read more

After having to drive quite a ways to the nearest T&T (now poisoned by Loblaws) or having to bear the reek of rotten seafood at T.Phat and EZ-Fresh (both closed for good, mercifully), it's refreshing to finally have a decent "Asian" grocery in Pickering. This place is like Al Supermarket's twin with a blue paint job instead of orange. The other reviewers are correct so no need to repeat them all -- in summary, low prices and the weekly specials are excellent deals, great selection from everywhere, decent prepared food/food court area especially the bakery, and yes the typical surly/rude/non-existent service* They are notorious for never having enough checkouts open and also closing checkout lines even when the lineups are 5 deep. If this already drives you nuts at Costco you'll go postal at Blue Sky! Also watch the signs before getting in a lineup as they like to screw around with you with "cash only", "no cards", "credit/debit only", "express lane 6 items" etc restrictions depending on how lazy the cashiers are. I probably would rate them a 3/5 but I'll give them an extra point for the entertainment I get from the "Engrish" / "Chinglish" signage. See my photos (especially the ones I took back in 2014) for a sampling. Today I had to laugh out loud when I saw Bay Rum (an aftershave) in with all the West Indian flavorings. I hope nobody actually tries to use that in a recipe! Thank you Blue Sky - you never disappoint me when I visit! this place is amazing! despite the other reviews concerning blue sky, I find this place to be filled with amazing food products! the workers are incredibly kind and funny, products are very easy to find, and are in good shape! i will always choose blue sky supermarket over any other grocery store, they sell everything you may need, from fruits to soaps, snacks and drinks and so much more! They have amazing food being freshly cooked as well! Blue sky supermarket is friendly to all cultures, and to all people. The store has nice lightning that isn't to bright, and overall very clean! I agree that the smell is unusual but personally I think it could just be the seafood. read more

Having seen Blue Sky from the 401 I was intrigued for sometime to check it out. I am glad that I did. It is a huge supermarket catering predominately to Oriental and Asian cuisine, but some Caribbean and European items can be picked up too. If you're looking for some difficult to find Japanese wasabi or Chinese noodle, chances are they have it here. Prices are competitive compared to Loblaws or Wal-Mart on items they mutually sell, but the specialised range available at Blue Sky is much greater. That being said, I was a little disappointed in the selection of Indian curry sauces available. I would be happier if there was a bigger range of ready-to-use sauces for those times when you just want to quickly throw a curry together. Nevertheless, there is a vast selection of spices and pastes if you have more time to make your own. On the negative side, there is often long lines at the cashier to pay. The checkouts have tiny, and I mean tiny surfaces on which to put your produce. So unless you only have a couple of items, you are caught in a whirlwind of trying to unload your kart whilst at the same time pack the items already rung through. Parking, particularly at the weekend, is also an issue. Although there is a fair size parking lot, it fills very quickly and people selfishly then park illegally on the sides making getting through dangerous and difficult. read more

This is not my regular place to shop, but since my husband had been ordering oxtail dinners from the restaurant, I decided to pop in and purchase the real deal, oxtail. The butcher was extremely uncouth, abrupt and unengaging. How am I supposed to know I have to choose one of the tails, if I don't know. I asked to cut them smaller than the first cut and he bluntly refused, handed me the bag with the meat and went on to the next customer. What a rude man! I can't speak for the entire store shopping experience because I was just picking up an order of springrolls. We had ordered to pick up at 2 pm, but we called ahead the day of and said we'd be at least a couple hours later. When I arrived to pick them up, I was told they had sold them to someone else because we were late. I explained that we had called in advance to change the pick up time. The man at the prepared food counter began yelling at me and lecturing me then said I had to wait while more were made. Then he walked away from me. I was prepared to just walk out, but we had 50 people coming over and I needed to bring these apps. So I waited. And I stewed with resentment after being treated so disrespectfully. Terrible customer service, this is not about languge barrier but just terrible rude staffs. We were on the que to pay and the thing that you put your groceries on was stained with bloody liquid from meat and chicken that previous customer just bought. We asked nicely, can you please wipe that before we put Our bread, apples, samosas etc. She cut off a small piece of toilet roll and wiped very slowly mumbling some words in her language. Of course that didn't do the job. She had a big roll of toilet roll, the amount of paper she cut cannot even wipe her own hands. I asked do u have like Lysol wipes or vinegar water or something because uncooked raw meet fluid can easily contaminate food that we and other people are buying, she said we don't have it, it's already clean. We handed our charcoal to her and she deliberately dragged it on the nasty yucky thing. I would have asked for her manager but I know they are all the same and that wouldn't be helpful anyways. This store has no regard for sanitation or customer service. To start with, I watched meat being dropped on the floor and then placed in the counter for sale. All this, right next to a big sign saying "No pictures allowed", no wonder why. Having pointed out to the clerk this was unsanitary, he pointed to me that not selling it would be waste in almost unintelligible English. Sanitary conditions are not up to standards, have twice called Regional Health Department yet nothing changes. I'm sitting here reading a bunch of reviews and notice that most people don't have a clue what they are talking about. The one lady who complained about the yellow skin chicken. Maple Leaf prime poultry is usually yellow skinned and one of the best tasting chickens out there. This chicken is much better than white chicken. I find the men working behind the meat counter always willing to cut my meat to the specs that I give them. Not fluent in English but they know what you want when you ask them. Also the person who said they don't have sales in the food court area. They have daily sales on the items and also discount all the days foods at 7pm every night. Where else are you going to find chicken drumsticks at .55 cents lb or a pork butt at .59 cents lb. Great place to shop and look online on Friday's for the new flyer out. read more

Visiting this place is a real treat for me and my kids (who love the deli counter). I especially appreciate the excellent seafood and butcher who provides a rich selection of unusual cuts. My only criticism is that lines at the check out can be quite long and if you don't time it right some of the fried offerings at the deli counter can be a bit soggy (always ask for a sample first) read more

This is my first review, as someone new to Yelp. This store opened in the area a little while ago now but my first visit was pretty recent. I came here first to check out the reviews and it seemed like somewhat of a mixed bag but I thought I'd check it out anyway. I'd actually like to start by pointing out that it seems mean-spirited to post photos of engrish. You would think people have never been to an asian supermarket. I get that it's kind of funny but it's par for the course when you're shopping at this type of store. It certainly doesn't help me know if the place is actually any good. So anyway, I visited and I was actually pretty impressed. You can tell they're trying to look like an upscale supermarket, which is actually something I haven't seen before from an asian type. I usually stick to more basic ingredients and I'm not much of a chef of asian cuisine. I mostly like grabbing soup broths and tofu. While checking out their hot food counter, the person there really sold me on their portuguese chicken. Yes, I know it's an asian store, but who doesn't like portuguese chicken?! Apparently they actually bought their roasting equipment from Portugal. This is a detail that impresses me because (to me at least) it shows they're trying, not just providing some minimum standard of asian produce. What's becoming a long story short, the chicken was darn good and the store was clean and well-stocked. Engrish aside, it's going to be a regular spot for me. read more

My experience at Blue Sky have been over shadowed by the quality of their fruits and vegetables. I have learned to expect that they will only last approx 2 days from purchase including the day you bought them. I have purchased avocados, herbs, mangos, and even the refrigerated noodles and all have rottened or turned blue in a couple of days. This has happened on about 3-4 separate occasions. Although it is a great supermarket of huge international variety, if it is not canned, I would suggest refraining from purchasing their supposedly fresh produce. In general stay away from Asian groceries stores to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Most imports come frozen, and go bad quickly after they defrost. In addition they purchase their produce at a discount because they are about to go bad so they buy at cheap prices and sell to you at cheap prices for a quick turnover. They have a poor shelf life once you bring them home. And it is frustrating that you have been fooled by the cheap price for rotten goods. Urggg!!!!! read more

This is the other asian market in Pickering and probably my favorite of the two. They are a bit larger (in a former Staples) but are farther from my house and in an inconvenient location. The parking is better here as they have a larger lot, although the gym across from them can take up a lot of space at times. Their produce can suffer from the same problem of pulling the good pieces from various containers and putting them together, so they don't always stay good for very long. The veggies are better since you usually can get them separate and not bagged together. I would not recommend the beef, but again the chicken and fish are good. Their bakery is much better than the other place with excellent egg tarts and coconut buns. Their hot food is also a bit better than the other store, but they rarely mark anything down other than regular sales. They have a larger and better selection in most of the store since it is a bit bigger. If I lived closer, I would go here more often. read more

Now I shop for groceries mostly in Costco and Blue Sky. Costco - consistent quality but often more expensive. Blue Sky - great deals happen, but be aware - some products (fruits, vegetables) may be not fresh/bad quality. I buy fish (fresh and frozen) in Blue Sky once a week since they opened - it's always good, no complains, and the price is great. read more
