Noodles with BBQ pork and deep fried squid.
    Chris C.

Since opening in Pickering, Blue Sky supermarket has been my go-to store for most groceries, Asian and otherwise. They offer a wide selection of Asian and Caribbean groceries; a butcher shop, including Halal; live seafood; a bakery; and a wide selection of cooked food. In addition to a lot of popular Chinese dishes, they offer jerk chicken, Portuguese chicken, chicken shawarma, fresh in-house sushi, and a salad bar. I often stop here on my way home from work when I don't feel like cooking. For the price of their food specials, I sometimes ask myself if I should even bother cooking. The prices are good. Very good when there's a sale going on. Most dishes average around $7 and are large enough to feed two people with healthy appetites. Two dishes could easily feed an average family of three. There's a high turnover rate during the busy lunch and dinner periods so the food is usually fresh. While there have been a few misses, the food taste and quality is usually good, maybe not as good as a made-to-order restaurant dish, but very good. If your timing is lucky, choose something that you see just coming out of the kitchen. Their current lunch special (before 3pm) offers a choice of rice or noodles, and two items from their steam table. Today, I had the beef fried rice with stewed chicken and ribs. It cost only $4.99! You can't beat that!

Somebody needs to grammar-check their slogan before posting it all over the store...

After having to drive quite a ways to the nearest T&T (now poisoned by Loblaws) or having to bear the reek of rotten seafood at T.Phat and EZ-Fresh (both closed for good, mercifully), it's refreshing to finally have a decent "Asian" grocery in Pickering. This place is like Al Supermarket's twin with a blue paint job instead of orange. The other reviewers are correct so no need to repeat them all -- in summary, low prices and the weekly specials are excellent deals, great selection from everywhere, decent prepared food/food court area especially the bakery, and yes the typical surly/rude/non-existent service* They are notorious for never having enough checkouts open and also closing checkout lines even when the lineups are 5 deep. If this already drives you nuts at Costco you'll go postal at Blue Sky! Also watch the signs before getting in a lineup as they like to screw around with you with "cash only", "no cards", "credit/debit only", "express lane 6 items" etc restrictions depending on how lazy the cashiers are. I probably would rate them a 3/5 but I'll give them an extra point for the entertainment I get from the "Engrish" / "Chinglish" signage. See my photos (especially the ones I took back in 2014) for a sampling. Today I had to laugh out loud when I saw Bay Rum (an aftershave) in with all the West Indian flavorings. I hope nobody actually tries to use that in a recipe! Thank you Blue Sky - you never disappoint me when I visit! Don't ever bother with spell check, grammar check, or having English speaking staff proof-read your signage, it'll ruin the atmosphere! Everybody needs a laugh and you supply that for free! * for friendlier service seek out non-Chinese staff. I find the Indians, Filipinos, and Middle-Easterners are much friendlier and speak perfect English. Obviously the management won't let them do the signage...

One cash open for a huge line of customer
    Valued Customer S.

Not a good place to shop once you make your way to the cash line and realize they don't really care about the customer and how fast they should be checked out.

The many dishes that were made from our stop at the market.

When it arrived the wedges was cold but the wings were still warm. However they forgot to give me my dipping sauce! Also I order naked wings and they gave me breaded wings! They also only gave me 29 wings when it was suppose to be 30! It wedge tasted pretty darn good as it was well seasoned. The wings were lacking a tiny bit as it wasn't crispy anymore. Even though they messed up on my order, it still tasted pretty good so I would probably order from them again especially at that price.

Recently, in response to economic tensions with the U.S.A., Canadian products are labelled with the maple leaf. This labelling is usually accurate, but best to check anyway. The loyalty card is one of the best out there, and every month I save a considerable amount of money. Just remember to open your app and load the offers! Starting with the prepared foods and deli counters, the chicken counter has the ubiquitous roast chicken, which every grocery store with a prepared food counter seems to stock. It's good, but I recommend the chicken fingers even more. I'm not much of a chicken finger fan, usually, but these are amazing. On Tuesday, they are on Special! The deli counter is well stocked with a wide range of cold cuts and meats. I'm sad that they no longer stock Greek Feta, as deli Feta difficult to find in Pickering. Moving on to the bakery, the in-store baked breads have been vastly upgraded, and you can now get some bakery quality breads here. This is a welcome change! The health food section is excellent for a grocery store, and you can get all sorts of healthy and organic things there, as well as vitamins. They stock rye flour, and its one of the few places that carry it, as well as Bob's Red Mill grain products. The adjacent pharmacy has basic pharmacy needs, and they fill prescriptions also. The Joe Fresh clothing section sells a variety of reasonably fasionable clothing (for a "grocery" store). The wine and beer selection is also great, featuring mostly Ontario products. The grocery aisles are much narrower than they used to be, and sometimes it can be a challenge to get through! Here, the selection is much the same as it always was. The PC and No Frills brands are generally very good value, and sales are well advertised in the flyer. Recently, the International Foods (both fresh and frozen) offers a bigger selection, selling, among other things, frozen Chinese selections from T & T. This is a great upgrade!. It was true 3 years ago, and still is; this would be a great destination in a zombie apocalypse. You could literally live in this store. They even have alcohol to calm your nerves in such a crisis!

Well first things first, it's still really new! It's located next to the Home Depot but other than that, its parking lot is not really shared with anyone else so parking was a breeze. There were a lot of carts on our way in including ones that are fun for toddlers since they had cars they could sit in. As you enter, there are some deals to check out which we kind of just passed by and regretted not looking at until we were leaving. Once you're inside the store, you'll find yourself in the produce section. To your left you'll find baskets for lighter shopping trips and kid-sized carts. These carts are kinda cool since they have a tall flag attached to it so you can keep an eye on them from farther away. The aisles in the produce section were a little bit squishy. The carts seem like they're wider than at other grocery stores so two of them passing by each other is really tight and we'd often have to wait for someone else to go before we could maneuver out. All of the displays were stacked neatly and everything looked really fresh and clean. We did pick up a few cartons of blueberries which were only $1.67 each. Normally they're at least $2.50 when I get them at Metro on sale! The rest of the store had more spacing between the aisles which made navigating around a little bit easier. The Food Basics store brand are the Selection items which are almost always a better deal than the national brands. We were able to get 3 200g bags of Selection chips for $4 whereas the Lays chips in 250g bags were 2 for $5. Marginally cheaper. Whatever, a deal is a deal. I'll take it and get to try more flavours lol. When we got to checkout that process also went smoothly. Each of the checkout lanes has the bagging item area separated into two for maximum efficiency. You do have to bag your own groceries. We definitely found a few great deals and the shopping experience was pleasant and stress free. Loblaws better watch out and Metro might regret having their low cost competitor in town!

Tip: Collect PC Optimum points at this store…read more A few months ago, I was at Rexall at the corner of Finch Avenue and Dixie Road. In the same plaza was Derek's Your Independent Grocer store. It intrigued me back then, especially with a Loblaws store close by on Kingston Road. I needed to get some groceries before I took in a matinee flick at Cineplex in Pickering. My original thought was to hit the Food Basics near this movie theatre. My route had me passing by this grocery store. Hey, why not give this place a try? I was driving eastbound on Finch Avenue. I took a right into the parking lot. It was spitting rain. I parked fairly close to the entrance and walked over to the entrance. I like that shopping carts don't require that you scramble for change to unlock it. I got a smaller one, as I didn't need a ton of items for this haul. I then walked in. I always like visiting a supermarket that I've never been to. I liked the produce section. Everything looked fresh. It wasn't overwhelming, as it is smaller supermarket. Prices are slightly expensive, as it's technically affiliated with Loblaws. However, I like the selection and variety. I needed celery and an avocado. They were both in pristine condition. The latter looked like every one was super ripe, but it wasn't the case when you held a few in your hand. I got a pineapple. There was a sale. Yay! In the prepared food section, wings were on sale. My highlight was seeing a perogies meal, complete fried onions and coleslaw. Wow! It was cool seeing sushi pockets in the frozen food fridge in both tuna mayo and salmon teriyaki. I grabbed the former to try out. This store also had beef rolls for hot pot. Impressive! I got a box of St Hubert tourtière in a pack of two that I've never seen before. I liked the smaller size that you can heat and eat. I wasn't planning on getting any pop here. However, I saw 7up in zero-sugar watermelon. It was new to me and a limited edition. I needed to get a case and did. This place had a ton of ICEE drink packs. It gave summer vibes early. I found the discount section. I ended up getting some ramen and a pack of PRIME drink packets that were heavily marked down in price. There was so much to see. I was extremely happy to have found bottles of furikake. I grabbed a bottle. This store has human cashiers and self-checkout kiosks. I went with a female cashier who was pleasant. She admitted that she was tired when she asked me for my PC Optimum barcode a second time. She had already scanned it. I was pleased to see a lavender reusable bag that I could purchase. I've been shopping with a reusable Yelp bag for a few years that has lost a lot of its insulated lining and had seen better days. This lavender bag was larger and would be a nice replacement despite not being insulated. This woman was great helping me place my items in my new bag. I put in the remaining items as she was getting me Disney stickers. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was done. I thanked this woman and rolled my groceries over to my car. I then put my cart away. I liked shopping here. It had everything that I needed and a lot more. (182)
