If you want flavorful charcoal grilled meat- this is the food cart to go to. This place always has a line but it moves fast so don't be intimidated. We ordered a kofta platter as well as a half chicken- both came with two soups, one tomato based the other was I believe a orzo base with a side salad and two types of rice with side of hot sauce and white sauce. The sides were a nice touch since it's a little different from other halal carts but it's really the smoky herbs of the meat that really sings. For these two platters it cost us 29 dollars total and that's pretty reasonable for a meal for two people with leftovers as well. Give them a try! read more

Tasty long fresh hot sandwiches. A good cart is hit and miss and today was a big hit. I ordered the chicken sandwich. It canne with lettuce, white sauce and hot sauce. Simple but perfectly done. The sauce doesn't drench the sandwich but it's very satisfying. The hot sauce gives it a nice kick. Plus the sandwich is very big s so you can share, save some or just feast. That chicken sandwich is legit. The chicken was grilled very well, giving it a bit of char but not drying it out. The bread they use isn't too spongy and the sauces tie the whole thing together. I saw a few other folks getting beef sandwiches which looked solid too. There's a bit of a wait (probably 15-20 minutes) but that's the nature of grilled food made to order. Yelp let me down this time. I came here based on the positive reviews and was really dissatisfied. I've had halal food in other places that's ten times better than this spot. Not to mention way overpriced; $12 for a simple chicken over rice with a side of salad purchased from costco/BJs. They didn't even have a menu or the prices listed anywhere on the truck. This is my favorite food cart in Astoria, in a crowded great place for street food. Halal half chicken, chicken and beef kababs, cooked year round over charcoal. Absolutely delicious, and though the other reviewer felt the platters weren't a good value, I have to say I disagree. Platters are amazing, if you get the half chicken, it comes with two soups typically(depending on supply) and a salad. Its served over two types of rice, and though I usually get this platter for myself, the meal could easily be shared between two people. At ten bucks, well worth it. This is my favorite dish here, though the kabab sandwiches are great, reasonably priced, and served on toasted bread with the dough pulled out. A couple of tips here, Sundays and dinner time hours you'll find yourself waiting for a long time, so be prepared to wait. It takes at least ten minutes even when there isn't a long wait. Though it says they deliver, I don't think that they do. I think they're overwhelmed with orders, and won't answer the number listed. I've tried, on several occasions, to call ahead for pickup without any luck. The last thing would mention is to ask for tahini. They used to only serve tahini and hot sause, but with the popularity of the ubiquitous white sauce, think they caved because everyone asks for it. Really great charcoal grilled food here. read more

Interesting little truck. Have walked past here a number of times and it's always an odd scene. Tons of middle easterners standing around, smoking cigarettes, playing backgammon and chatting. Last Friday night I was in the mood for some lamb and decided to try it out rather than going to Little Morocco or Halal Sandwich (both great establishments in their own right). I arrived at about 9:30 Friday night and upon arriving the ordering was very tricky, especially if you don't speak the language (Arabic I'm guessing). After about 10 minutes of aimlessly standing around I ordered a Lamb Sandwich. There were about 20 people standing by the truck waiting for their food. Ended up talking to one of their patrons who drives from Jaimaca to get 2 sandwiches (1 for now, 1 for tomorrow) every Friday night from this place, now that is serious dedication. He assured me though that he only orders when a certain man is manning the grill. My sandwich was huge, and took about 30 minutes to get ready. The value was great ($6 for a monster sub). The flavors just weren't there, I was expecting some succulent juicy lamb and to be honest it was a little dry. I placed my order 40 minutes before they closed for a kabab sandwich. I got there a little early and I saw the cook with no mask and no gloves and no hat. I saw him put 1 skewer of chicken in 4 sandwiches. He was literally putting 3-4 pieces of meat in a sandwich with his hand. I think Farid's grill can be a hit or miss depending on the griller's mood. I've went there twice where I felt like the chicken was grilled a bit too much, to a point where it was super dry.. but then that ONE time I went where the food was fantastic, I will never forget about. I'm not sure if the cook was feeling generous that day or what, but he gave us both the pea soup and the vegetable soup. The tomato pea soup is absolutely DELICIOUS accompanied with the grilled chicken and rice. The portions are gigantic and could easily feed three people too, I think. The vegetable soup on the other hand was just okay, not much flavor. I've tried to get the pea soup again but it's always sold out.
