I received a bad haircut 2+ years ago at a different salon and I was finally feeling like I could go and get my haircut again. I was very careful when researching salons and thought this place would be a good fit. I mentioned in my booking that this was my first haircut in a while due to a bad experience and told my stylist. The salon also asked for pictures of my hair and sent a questionnaire asking what I wanted. I said multiple times that I wanted long layers and to keep most of my length. That did not happen. The stylist kept length in the back and gave me very short layers and I do not like the very poofy, volumized look. When I have gotten curly cuts in the past, it's like they are carving my curls with their scissors and making them fall nicely. The stylist here took portions of my hair and pulled them to the opposite side of my head to cut and give me very short layers. When dried, the curls get muddled together and do not even fall nicely. I feel like I have a shelf of short curls around my head. I wear my hair up and I cannot even wear it braided due to all the layers. When I shower I am reminded of what a hack job of a haircut I received and get sad all over again. Having mentioned my troubled past with haircuts in the booking (and in person), I thought that they would be very careful when cutting my hair. I am aware that my past heightens my current disappointment, but I think it is still worth to note to prospective customers that they are not able to achieve long layers.

The last highlight job left me with a distinct line after a month and a half of growth, which I wasn't thrilled about. That being said, I was looking to try somewhere new and they were able to get me in on the same day I called. Devyn was my stylist - I described what I wanted and showed her a few pictures and we were off. No lie, I was in and out in about an hour (my old salon visits would take at least 3), it came out EXACTLY as I described and wanted, and it cost me half of what I was used to paying. I admit these were some big shoes to fill especially since I have my hair cut every 4 weeks, my hair is rather defiant, but I want it to always look nice. I was very impressed with the coziness of the New Beginnings salon, the ability to obtain an appointment that was timely and convenient, the warm feeling of friendship and esteem between the staff, the respect and concern they showed the customers, the quality of my haircut by Jessica and the very reasonable price. They even provide a discount for seniors, military and college students. Jessica took the time to listen to the concerns I have about my hair, the look I was trying to achieve and she genuinely wanted to make sure I left happy - which I certainly did! She used some new products, explaining their use but left it at that. I have finally found a new salon where I can walk in and know I will be comfortable with my stylist, leave delighted with my haircut as well as being content with the amount I spend. She explained that yes they were and that along with that, they would cut my hair for free! I was very happy to hear that I could donate my hair and cut down my cost in the process. We chatted about what styles I had in mind and I booked my appointment with her as we seemed to hit it off! My hair was quite long and she cut off a good 14 inches for locks of love. She was personable, and a lot of fun to talk to while she cut my hair. She did an amazing job!!! Before I left, I wasn't sure what it was but the owner made me feel odd, when I asked about the discount for locks of love. She gave me it don't get me wrong but, it just felt like she didn't believe me that I actually was going to send in my hair for locks of love. Anyways, when I left I felt very satisfied with who my hair came out and was thrilled about new look. I went back in a month to get my hair colored. It took me a month to decide on a color and I finally decided on a very emo type hair color. It actually was 3 separate colors and I loved all of them. I texted my stylist Liz who gave me her number with the picture of the hair color I wanted. She responded saying how great it would look on me and that it was definitely something she was able to do. Excited I looked forward to getting my hair colored with he.r So, today was the day. ::Sighs:: I went in with a picture on my cell phone. It was very distinct and easy to see. She suggested instead of the black undertone of my hair, that I try for a dark brown instead, so as not to get too dark. I agreed, as long as it was somewhat close to what I had in mind I didn't seem to think it'd matter. I also mentioned I wanted a gloss which she happily agreed to do. She started foiling my hair with blond first and then red and finally black. She was SO awesome I can't stress that enough, however her boss was hovering around her and scolded her in front of me for taking too long putting the colors in my hair. I found it to be extremely Unprofessional of her, as the owner of the place. She made her employee feel awkward and it was evident that she was upset. And honestly I can't say I blame her. I quietly asked Liz if she had another client after me, but she said she did not, which only made me question the lack of professionalism from the owner even more. A few more scoldings took place RIGHT in front of me from the owner!!!! The 2nd was for using TOO much glossing, and the 3rd for using too much red!!! Okay, so she rinses it out, and starts to blow dry it..... and as she's doing this she didn't have me face the mirror deliberately as she wanted it to be a surprise. :) :) (she asked me if this was okay first of course, and it was) When she was done, she turned my chair to face me to see myself and.... it was great! My hair looked awesome and shiny and it was soooo beautiful!! But, ...... ::sighs:: it wasn't like my picture. And, because her boss made me feel SO bad for her by all her scolding, I didn't have the heart to tell her I wasn't truly happy. She is an amazing stylist and had she been ALLOWED to style my hair her own way, I think she would have done fabulous! But,, there was hardly enough blond in the front, and I could barely see any red.. it was scarcely put in.... maybe a single streak in front if that. The brown looked just like my own hair color, except maybe a shade darker I guess?? I dunno... I gave her a nice tip, ... again mostly out of feeling bad for her. I hate it when Employers abuse their superiority like that. It's just wrong. Cost: I made sure to get a price before she did any work. it was a total of $110 dollars worth of coloring/glossing, But,.... I'm not sure it was worth it, ONLY because of the rudeness of the owner. Sorry but, if you want repeat customers, act like a professional!! SO.... I rated this as best I could 3 stars actually more like 5 for my sweet stylist Liz, as she's wicked awesome!! And if I could have rated the owner it would have been 0. She was just... completely rude and unprofessional and made me the customer question whether I want to return back again. Her recent updates to the salon also have made it a very cute space in the downtown, so it had the added bonus of feeling like a spa day. Basically, she and her team turned a mishap into a great salon find and a beautiful color fix. I would highly recommend the services, space, price, and people here! Out of respect for the stylist, I will not be sharing her name, however I feel I need to share what I have been dealing with so others don't go through the same experience. I went in for a full foil - a process that this stylist had done on my hair before, in addition to balayages and other processes involving bleach. I was at the salon for hours, which was abnormal, and walked out with hair damaged beyond belief after spending about $300. The underneath layers of my hair were melted off, and the rest of my hair was snapping and breaking off in clumps, to the point where I could hardly even comb my hair with a wide tooth comb without losing significant amounts of hair at a time. My roots were uneven, I had a large stripe on the back of my head, other areas had color banding, in addition to the irreversible damage that I had never experienced despite getting bleach processes done regularly for about 8 years. After this visit, I contacted the salon about my concerns, and the owner agreed to look at my hair. She told me it looked fine and that the damage was not as bad as I thought, despite the fact that she herself had never dealt with my hair before. Only after I repeatedly expressed my concerns did she agree to tone my roots, and I walked out for a second time with hair so damaged and nowhere close to what I had requested in my initial appointment. I then went to visit a different salon in the area, where the stylist that helped me informed me that I would likely be dealing with the repercussions of this damage for at least a year, if not longer. At this point, I contacted Allure again to get my money back. Despite getting my money back, I have spent a significant amount at this other salon trying to fix it, yet I still experience a lot of breakage that I never dealt with before my last appointment here. If you are looking to get a blonding or bleaching process here, I strongly suggest to look elsewhere. The damage that was done to my hair here was devastating, and has lasted for months with no end in sight.
